Currently playing the role of Marcia Murphey in the Broadway show, "A Beautiful Noise, The Neil Diamond Musical", Robyn Hurder shares how she got involved with the show and how she never thought it would be her biggest role to date. In fact, she auditioned for a different role but didn't think much of it because she felt like she wasn't right for it. Robyn speaks candidly about her love of performing, what it's like to work during the pandemic and the physical demands of it. She recalls how she got into theatre and how growing up with a supportive family, especially her mom, was one of the main reasons why she was able to follow her dreams. From doing community theatre productions in her younger years to playing the role of Mary Magdalene in a production of "Jesus Christ Superstar", it was that first taste of being the star of the show which pushed her to pursue performing as a career. Robyn also talks about having the “it” factor, the importance of believing in yourself and your talent, and that if you remain true to yourself and what you want, you're going to be okay. Robyn Hunter is an actress best known for originating the role of Nini in "Moulin Rouge! The Musical", which also earned her a Tony Award nomination. Her other Broadway credits include "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang", "Chicago", "Grease", and "Nice Work If You Can Get It". She's also performed in numerous Off-Broadways shows such as "Play It Cool", "Paint Your Wagon", "The New Yorkers", and "A Chorus Line" among others. Her tv credits include "The Right Girl", "Fosse/Verdon", and "Starlight Express". Robyn recently finished originating the role of Marcia Murphey in "A Beautiful Noise, The Neil Diamond Musical", which has now transferred to Broadway at the Broadhurst Theatre. The promise of regaining Wilshire Memorial's Chief of Staff job has Peter re-energized about his career. He's even going back into the OR! Sadly, his good mood sours quickly, and when Amanda's not around to comfort him, he turns to...well, not the next best thing, but the thing that's around all the time: Taylor. Her contact with Peter is in direct contravention of Kyle's clear request that she stop spending time with Peter for the sake of her marriage, and is sick of her weaseling out of disputes by throwing his infidelity in his face. Meanwhile, Amanda -- the one who first alerted Kyle that he should be suspicious of the time Taylor spends with Peter -- is tied up with work stuff. Now that Craig has learned that he's the majority shareholder at D&D, he's ready to start making changes immediately. Since this means a huge demotion for Amanda, she goes behind Craig's back to the old man, who asks her to play along with Craig's big plans for the sake of Amanda's money, and Arthur's. Craig might not even notice any duplicity on Amanda's part since he's pretty focused on Samantha, to Billy's chagrin. Jane heads home to Chicago to visit her parents and complain about the mess she's made of her life. A conversation at Mrs. Andrews's medical appointment forces her to tell Jane something she apparently hoped she and Mr. Andrews would never have to admit: Jane is adopted! Back in Los Angeles, Megan is settling nicely into mistress life (though she does note that Michael's being very controlling). After Kimberly busts in on Michael and Megan, "discovering" their relationship, Michael moves out of the beach house and Kimberly prepares to brief Megan on Phase 2 of their scheme. But Megan's uncomfortable keeping the secret of Kimberly's diagnosis from him, and her insistence on spilling forces Kimberly to make a shocking pivot. Finally, Matt finally talks Dr. Dan into bed, and Jake renews his suggestion that Alison join him as the half owner of Shooters. Currently in Moulin Rouge! on Broadway, Robyn's other Broadway credits include Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Chicago, The Wedding Singer, Grease, and Nice Work If You Can Get It, where she and Clyde performed together. You may have seen Clyde in Broadway's On The Town, Anything Goes, Bullets Over Broadway, Wicked, Hairspray, and Oklahoma. Quite the list, right? Their love story started at the age of 19 at Maine State Music Theatre. They have been each other's biggest support and cheerleader through more shows and travels and changes than you can imagine. We love their energy, humor, teamwork, and their unfailing love for each other and this business that brought them together. It's been our great pleasure to watch their love grow over the years, and evolve into a full-on triangle when they became parents to their amazing son. When you talk to old friends, nothing is off limits: their early impressions of one another, dating, moving in, the decision to become parents, first grade in the pandemic, Instagram… you name it. Robyn and Clyde are ready to talk about it! This week's SPOTLIGHT ON LOVE comes to us from our listener Jason: How do you stay sane as a couple being together in quarantine 24 hours a day? What are some suggestions? Robyn and Clyde knew that their relationship was going to last when they could say absolutely anything in front of one another. Without meaning to, they created a safe space where everything was allowed. How about you? What was the moment that told you this relationship is going to go the distance? We love relationship stories. Go ahead. For more than a decade, Kelli O'Hara has been at the very top of the Broadway heap. She gets called "luminous" so often that it must get really very, very tiring. It's been a remarkable journey for a kid who grew up on a farm in western Oklahoma and cut her teeth doing repertory theater in Wichita. She tells Alec her story, with a fascinating, surprising twist: she deeply loves Broadway but wants to branch out, and says she's struggled to do so.
Robyn Hurder steps into the Batter’s Box to kick off the new year! Eight times a week, Robyn is hitting homeruns at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre as one of the leads in Moulin Rouge! in front of packed houses, earning both her and the production a fair share of critical and popular acclaim. Robyn’s portrayal of Nini Legs-in-the-Air makes her the perfect hitter for the Break a Bat! lineup, as her performances are defined by athleticism, intensity, and most importantly – a passion for her craft. It’s very similar to the passion and style of play that made Paul O’Neill one of the most beloved World Champions to ever play for the New York Yankees. It’s fitting that the two share a nickname in “The Warrior,” or in Robyn’s case “The Warrior Beast." In this episode, she parallels the pressures of being a principal on Broadway to being a starter on a Major League team, and a responsibility to represent the Moulin Rouge! legacy well through her skillset. She also discusses career crossroads that made her stronger, staying true to her style of performance, and what keeps her motivated. With a body of work on Broadway that now spans nearly a decade and a half, with credits including: Grease, Nice Work If You Can Get It, Chicago, among other productions, Robyn's insight and stories are invaluable for anyone looking to become an All-Star either on Broadway or at the ballpark. Originally hailing from Maine, she may be a Red Sox fan, but reveals she’s down to help our host, Al Malafronte, put the wheels into motion on the Broadway Takeover of Yankee Stadium this baseball season! Kathleen Marshall is a director, choreographer, and creative consultant. She began her Broadway career as an assistant to her brother Rob, the choreographer of Kiss of the Spider Woman, in 1993. The two also collaborated on She Loves Me, Damn Yankees, Victor/Victoria, and Seussical. She was the artistic director for the Encores! series of staged musical revivals from 1996 through 2000. During that time, she choreographed The Boys from Syracuse, Li'l Abner and Call Me Madam and both directed and choreographed Babes in Arms and Wonderful Town. The Encores! production of Wonderful Town transferred to Broadway in November 2003 and ran until January 2005 for which she won the Tony Award for Best Choreography. She was the director and choreographer of the Broadway revival of Pajama Game which opened in February 2006. She directed and choreographed a Broadway revival of Cole Porter's Anything Goes in 2011. She was the director and choreographer of the musical Nice Work If You Can Get It which opened on Broadway in April 2012. Like most in demand and successful choreographers, she quickly transitioned to the role of Director/Choreographer and helmed shows like Anything Goes, The Pajama Game, Nice Work If You Can Get It and this season’s a capella In Transit. Kathleen told me how she comes up with those killer numbers in this week’s podcast, as well as . . . How her Director in summer stock knew she was going to direct someday. What it’s like to have an older brother who is also a successful Director/Choreographer, and what she learned from him. What it’s like to be married (!) to a Producer . . . and the three roles she thinks every Producer must fill. The downside of long-running shows on Broadway. Why non-profit and commercial theater are more similar than not. Keep up with me: @KenDavenportBway www.theproducersperspective.com Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Joe DiPietro is a playwright, lyricist, and author. He is best known for the Tony Award-winning musical Memphis, as well as for writing the book and lyrics for the long-running off-Broadway show I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change, which ran for twelve years off-Broadway. His work made its Broadway debut in 2005 with the Elvis Presley jukebox musical All Shook Up. The Toxic Avenger, written with Bon Jovi's David Bryan, debuted off-Broadway on April 6, 2009. Nice Work If You Can Get It, a re-imagining of a Gershwin musical, opened at Broadway's Imperial Theatre in 2012. The show, and his book, were nominated for Tony Awards in 2012, and he won the Drama Desk Award for Best Book of a Musical. The musical Chasing the Song was workshopped at La Jolla Playhouse in the summer of 2014. Joe sat down to tell his story of how he got to where he is, what has kept him sane (and smiling) in a business that can beat you up, and a whole host of other things, including . . . How he learned to write under pressure and on deadline (like, I don’t know, when a $15mm Broadway show is in previews?). Whether writers should think about the commerciality of a piece when coming up with an idea for Broadway. How the lack of success of All Shook Up helped changed his career (and his life) for the better. The challenges of writing a jukebox musical and how he overcomes them. What has changed about writing for the theater in the last 20 years, and what that means for new writers. If you’re looking for a way to see theatre for cheap, and also meet new people, check out the Broadway Meetup. Literally just google ‘Broadway Meetup,’ you’ll see there are all these opportunities for you to see shows like Jersey Boys for $59, before it closes, Something Rotten for only $39. Let’s talk about Jukebox Musicals. That’s a slangy term describing a stage show that is built around an assortment of pre-existing, usually well-known songs, stuff you might have heard on the radio, or on a barroom jukebox. Most traditional musicals build the songs into the stories as a unified whole. A jukebox musical lets the songs themselves suggest the storyline, the characters, and the tone. It’s basically building a musical in reverse. Nice Work if You Can Get It, built around classic 20s and 30s songs by George and Ira Gershwin, is pleasant, classy, solidly performed, and light-as-a-feather. Written by Joe DiPietro, seems to evaporate almost as soon as its over, along with the majority of its pleasing but strangely unmemorable tunes, the two or three exceptions including ‘Someone to Watch Over Me,’ ‘S’wonderful,’ and ‘Fascinating Rhythm.’ The plot, about a Prohibition era playboy, falling in love with a sweet bootlegger on the eve of his marriage to a famous dancer, is slight and silly, but crammed with old-fashioned, simplistic charm. The performances are lively, if mostly just skimming the surface, and the dancing, from swing moves to ecstatic tap numbers, is frequently breathtaking. Rock of Ages—constructed from hard-rocking, face-melting, pop-rock-and-metal tunes from the garish 1980s—is coarse, crude, exuberant, and sprinkled with sleazy Sunset Strip darkness and danger. Created by Chris D’Arienzo Rock of Ages employs songs by Journey, Van Halen, REO Speedwagon, Pat Benatar, Starship and others in telling the story of Drew, a wannabe rocker stuck cleaning the bar at an L.A. music club, and Sherrie, the aspiring actress he falls hard for. That Drew will eventually break into a rendition of Steve Perry’s ‘Oh Sherrie’ is inevitable from the moment he first hears her name. While both working at the a legendary rock venue called The Bourbon Room, their budding romance is derailed by the arrival of Stacee Jaxx, the amoral lead singer of a band called Arsenal. A subplot involves a plot by German developers to raze the Bourbon Room to make way for chain stores, galvanizing the club’s supporters into various forms of protest, including repeated group performances of Twisted Sister’s ‘We’re Not Going to Take It.’ As written, it’s a bit of a hot mess, with a fair share of gleefully offensive moments and one potentially moving scene marred by the actors’ use of distasteful stereotypes. But overall, Rock of Ages is infectiously pleasurable, with loads of high energy, a kind of gritty youthful innocence, and tunes written to stick in your brain for days. 'Rock of Ages' runs through August 11, and ‘Nice Work If You Can Get It’ runs through August 13. Visit www.summerrep.com
Sally Struthers is an Emmy Award winning actress, best known for playing Gloria Stivic on All in the Family, and Babette on Gilmore Girls. In 1970 she appeared on the big screen in Five Easy Pieces opposite Jack Nicholson. She is currently starring in Nice Work If You Can Get It at Gateway Playhouse in Bellport, NY, for which she has received rave reviews and countless standing ovations. In this conversation, Sally and her co-star Jamie Beaman talk about what they love about Gateway, live theater and performing with each other; why comedy is difficult and dangerous and mysterious and the best high there is; and finding the balance between vulnerability and self-protection as an artist. Plus- Sally reveals why she doesn't get residual checks for All in the Family, how her daughter Samantha changed her life for the better, and why it's important for her to keep working.

Kelli O'Hara, Broadway star of The Bridges of Madison County joins host Robin Milling backstage at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theater in New York City. Kelli tells Robin her dressing room is decorated with photographic inspirations to put her into the mindset of Francesca like a map of Italy, an 18th century Italian sketch, as well as a picture of the actual Rosamund Bridge in Iowa where Robert (played by Steven Pasquale) and Francesa meet. Born in Oklahoma on a farm where she chopped cotton and was the 'official lawn girl'; she and her sister would harmonize through the aisles of the cotton fields ironically singing 'Love Could Build A Bridge.' Kelli could tap into Francesca's farm life, but slipping into her lilting Neopolitan accent combined with a bit of Americana happens when she says 'Francesa,' puts on a brown wig over her blonde locks, darkens her eyebrows and wears a farmwife's dress. She also has a ritual on her walk to the stage of reading all the signs on the wall in her accent like, 'stage right,' or 'no toaster ovens please!' Having a new addition to the family and loving relationship with her husband, Greg Naughton enriches her with love and emotion which she brings into the role of Francesca. She says, “I don't think I could've played this role without having what's going on in my personal life right now. You come to a place in your life where everything is just at the right time.” Click here for your free audiobook www.audibletrial.com/millingabout Photos courtesy of Joan Marcus
