The follow-up episode to my previous Forgotten Broadway episode is an epic one, chock full of fascinating composers, lyricists, performers and shows. We begin with a tribute to birthday boy Leonard Bernstein, a song from Peter Pan sung by gay Broadway icon Larry Kert. From there we encounter shows by Lerner and Loewe, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Kander and Ebb, Cy Coleman, Dorothy Fields, Strouse and Adams, Jerry Herman, Stephen Sondheim, Schmidt and Jones, Vernon Duke, Mary Rodgers, Sigmund Romberg, Harold Rome and Leroy Anderson, among others, performed by Jane Powell, Pat Suzuki, Melba Moore, Rita Gardner, Jack Cassidy, Rebecca Luker, Cesare Siepi, Susan Johnson, Dody Goodman, Pearl Bailey, Ezio Pinza, Elaine Stritch, Shannon Bolin, and others. Diverse topics discussed include the Broadway revue, queer subjects and performers, and the place of performers of color on Broadway. This is a long episode that I recommend listening to in segments! And please be aware that an equally mammoth third segment on Forgotten Broadway will be published this weekend for my Patreon supporters! Countermelody is a podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. Singer and vocal aficionado Daniel Gundlach explores great singers of the past and present focusing in particular on those who are less well-remembered today than they should be. Daniel's lifetime in music as a professional countertenor, pianist, vocal coach, voice teacher, and journalist yields an exciting array of anecdotes, impressions, and “inside stories.” At Countermelody's core is the celebration of great singers of all stripes, their instruments, and the connection they make to the words they sing. By clicking on the following link (https://linktr.ee/CountermelodyPodcast) you can find the dedicated Countermelody website which contains additional content including artist photos and episode setlists. Back in 2016, North Carolina Theatre was getting ready to present a production of Margaret Edson's Pulitzer Prize-Winning play, WIT. Prior to that, I was able to get in touch with one of its stars, Daisy Eagan. With 3 Broadway credits to her name, Daisy made her main stem debut as a child in the original production of LES MISÉRABLES as a former Young Cosette and Young Éponine. Her last appearance was in JAMES JOYCE'S THE DEAD from way back in 2000. Though she is perhaps best known for originating the role of Mary Lennox in Lucy Simon & Marsha Norman's 1991 stage musical adaptation of Frances Hodgson Burnett's 1911 novel, THE SECRET GARDEN. Daisy not only got to be in a cast that also included Mandy Patinkin, Rebecca Luker, Robert Westenberg, Alison Fraser, and John Cameron Mitchell, but at just 11 years old, she became the youngest female to have ever won a Tony Award. *I do not own any of the content used in this podcast. As I'm writing these notes for the podcast, many Broadway shows are not able to come back right now because of the increasing Covid numbers. This podcast was recorded just a couple days ago before "Moulin Rouge!" had to shut down on Thursday and Friday, due to Covid found in the company… Here's to hoping they're back safely by the time you're reading this. The 10-time Tony winning "Moulin Rouge!" stars my guest today – Recent winner of the Tony this past year for his performance as Harold Zidler in "Moulin Rouge!", Danny Burstein. Danny is an amazing human being, in literally every sense of the word. And he just also happens to be one of the best actors you could ever dream of seeing on a Broadway stage. Or anywhere. Danny Burstein has starred in 18 Broadway plays, receiving Tony nominations for "The Drowsy Chaperone" (2006), "South Pacific" (2008), "Follies" (2012), "Golden Boy" (2013), "Cabaret" (2014), and "Fiddler on the Roof" (2016). Burstein has also won two Drama Desk Awards, four Outer Critics Circle Awards, and received three Grammy Award nominations. Burstein's performance in "Moulin Rouge!" also earned him the 2020 Drama League Award for Distinguished Performance. His other Broadway credits include "The Seagull" (1992), "Saint Joan" (1993), and "Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown" (2010). He has also acted in many prominent television shows and movies. I had the great privilege of meeting Danny when I was chosen as the actor to close the part of ‘Man In Chair,' following in the footsteps of the brilliant Bob Martin, amongst other gifted actors. Being on stage at the Marquis Theatre on Broadway, standing next to Danny - and the rest of the amazing cast - was a gift beyond gifts as an actor. I was intimidated by Danny because he was so damn good. And of course this was the part where he played a Latin lover narcissist, Adolfo, a part for which he was nominated for a Tony. it was one of the funniest characters I had ever seen. Danny has overcome so many things— and many of them recent. We discuss all of them in this wonderful conversation with one of my dearest friends. We speak of the loss of his wife to ALS, the amazing musical star, Rebecca Luker. We talk of how Danny had to walk himself to the hospital in March 2020 on the verge of death from Covid—and his journey before and since then both personal and professional. If you'd like to hear a very special open conversation between friends —who love each other —and also get to hear from one of the greatest and most highly respected actors on Broadway, this episode will truly resonate with you. Welcome to the Season Two premiere of Stage Door Medium!I hope you're well and ready for some more in-depth discussions on energy-work, mediumship and the arts! This week, I'm joined by the ultra-talented Sally Wilfert. Sally has appeared in the Broadway productions of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, Assassins, and King David, as well as the National Tour of the 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee and countless others. In addition to being one of the most talented folks out there, she's genuinely one of the kindest and most grounded people as well. This week, Sally and I discuss the importance of making time for ourselves before the job and why it's so important if we're to bring our whole selves to the work. We also share some tips to ensure we enter the room and leave the room (audition or reading) with our own energy versus that of others. Trust me, as a Medium, it's a real thing and I call it the "energetic gunk build up". In addition, Sally shares some beautiful memories, pieces of advice, and funny stories of her best friend, Rebecca Luker, who passed away in December of last year. We also discuss the beautiful new album, “All the Girls” that Sally and Rebecca created, in addition to the mind-blowing story about how the album transformed from a live soundboard recording into a full-blown studio album. In addition, we'll discuss Sally's reading, the best Adam Guettel advice for anyone playing Margaret in Piazza, and the characters Sally has played that could benefit most from a Medium. If you're interested in developing your own Spiritual abilities, I'll also share a bit more on Clairsentience and why it feels like the old Operation Board Game to me at times.Next week, we're back to our regularly scheduled episodes on Mondays at 7PM!Learn more about Sally below:sallywilfert.comInstagram: @sallywilfertLearn more about Stage Door Medium or Book a reading with Jimmy below!stagedoormedium.comInstagram: @stagedoormediumEditing and animation:davidraydesign.comInstagram: @davidraydesignWatch on Instagram & YouTube

Is there anyone out there who will not be relieved to bid farewell to 2020, this annus horribilis? I know I’ll be delighted to kick its ass out the door. How to make any sense of this year of pandemic, panic, political shenanigans, poverty, racial injustice, climate disaster and general global upheaval? I have no answers, except to return to music. The episode begins with a mini-tribute to Broadway great Rebecca Luker, who lost her hard-fought against ALS on December 23rd. Then I return to the year 1935, since, as I discovered as I was preparing my mom’s birthday episode a couple weeks ago, so many interesting musicians were born in that year. Some of those artists are still with us, others died some time ago, while still others were among the many casualties of 2020. I take a journey through the composers (Arvo Pärt, Aulis Sallinen, Nicholas Maw, Peter Schat, Josep Soler, Giya Kancheli, and Peter Schickele [aka P.D.Q. Bach]) and singers (Helga Pilarczyk, Sherrill Milnes, Dominic Cossa, Arlene Saunders, Albert Remedios, and Teresa Berganza) born in that year, and conclude with those beloved artists Mirella Freni and Luciano Pavarotti (both of whom were also born in 1935) in an extended excerpt from a live 1975 performance of La bohème, that exemplifies near-perfection, operatically speaking. Let’s “tak a cup o’ kindness yet” at the passing of this challenging year as we also look forward to a new year better in every imaginable way than its predecessor! Countermelody is a podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. Singer and vocal aficionado Daniel Gundlach explores great singers of the past and present focusing in particular on those who are less well-remembered today than they should be. Daniel’s lifetime in music as a professional countertenor, pianist, vocal coach, voice teacher, and journalist yields an exciting array of anecdotes, impressions, and “inside stories.” Occasional guests from the “business” (singers, conductors, composers, coaches, and teachers) lend their distinctive insights. At Countermelody’s core is the interaction between singers of all stripes, their instruments, and the connection they make to the words they sing. Person Place Thing with Randy Cohen

This celebrated Broadway actor--The Secret Garden, The Music Man, Mary Poppins--much admired for her glorious voice, sees parallels between cooking and theater. Both are ephemeral. A recipe is akin to a script: neither is the thing itself; each provides instructions for creating the thing. None of this contradicts audience etiquette: no eating during the performance, and no cooking at your seat.

Today’s episode (in celebration of Countermelody’s first birthday!) picks up where the last one left off: more musicals, more opera (and operaish) singers! Excerpts from cast recordings, radio broadcasts, telecasts, and live performances highlight the work of singers who divided their time, to a greater or lesser extent, between the Broadway stage and the operatic stage. We begin with the great bass-baritones (Ezio Pinza, Cesare Siepi, Giorgio Tozzi, and José Van Dam) and move through the great Broadway (and sometime opera) baritones (Alfred Drake, John Raitt, Bruce Yarnell, Robert Trehy, Leslie Scott, Lawrence Winters, and John Reardon) with a nod to other opera singers who have also graced the Broadway stage (Helen Traubel, Shirley Verrett, Mona Paulee, Dorothy Sarnoff, Risë Stevens, Lee Venora, Camilla Williams, and Carol Brice). We then consider singers whose vocal abilities could easily have put them on the opera stage, had they chosen to so devote themselves (Alice Ghostley, Madeline Kahn, Barbara Cook, Florence Henderson, Judy Kaye, Lisa Vroman, Audra McDonald, Victoria Clark, Rebecca Luker, and the late Marin Mazzie). The episode also features tributes to two recently deceased divas (Gabriella Tucci and Christiane Eda-Pierre) as well as a spotlight on the gorgeous soprano Margaret Tynes, who just celebrated her 101st birthday. Danny Burstein is a six-time Tony Award nominee who made his Broadway debut in 1992 and now has 18 Broadway credits including Company, Titanic, The Drowsy Chaperone, South Pacific, Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, Follies, Fiddler on the Roof, and most recently My Fair Lady opposite Laura Benanti. He can be seen all over the small and big screens, currently as D.A. Lewis Cormier on the CBS TV series Evil, and can even be heard lending his voice to video games such as Grand Theft Auto and more. He is now on stage as Harold Zidler in Moulin Rouge the musical. After deciding at a young age that performing was for him, he attended the High School of Performing Arts in New York, Queens College, and then University of California, San Diego to take an MFA in Acting. Throughout his highly acclaimed career, he almost said no to the offer of what then came The Drowsy Chaperone. While performing 8 times a week, he also makes the time (often at the expense of sleep) to also maintain an active TV, film, and voice over career. On a more serious note, we discuss Rebecca Luker's (his wife) recent diagnosis of ALS, more commonly referred to as Lou Gehrig's Disease. He is candid and emotional about the toll it has taken on both of them in addition to the incredible drive and strength Rebecca has to stay well. Broadway's newest Gypsy Rose Lee, Laura Benanti (winner of a Tony Award for her role in Gypsy), talks about playing the title role in Gypsy both last summer at City Center and again this year on Broadway, including her thoughts on formidable author and director Arthur Laurents, as well as a few facts about the real Gypsy and Rose that didn't make it into the musical. Benanti also discusses her vocal training under the tutelage of her mother (who unlike Rose expressly forbid young Laura from turning pro in her youth); her big break understudying Rebecca Luker in The Sound of Music -- and playing a romantic role opposite someone 45 years her senior; how she handled her first professional disappointment, at the fate of the musical Time and Again; the serious injury -- and nasty rumors -- that plagued her during the revival of Into the Woods and nearly derailed her performance in Nine; and what it was like, after playing many period roles, for this Jersey girl to play a girl from New Jersey in The Wedding Singer.

Bonus Episode #1: Becca's back! I've made it a policy to avoid repeat guest appearances, but I had to make an exception for Rebecca Luker: a) because she was my first podcast guinea pig, back before I was able to separate the piano and the vocals, and I wanted to have an opportunity to record her magnificent voice with better sound, and b) because this song was written expressly for her.Rebecca Luker is the quintesssential Broadway leading lady. Not only has she led the casts of such high-profile Broadway revivals as The Music Man (Marian), The Sound of Music (Maria), Nine (Claudia) and Showboat (Magnolia), but she has also appeared in such original musicals as The Secret Garden (Lily) and The Phantom of the Opera (Christine). Lately, she has been enjoying a rather busy concert career, including a solo evening in the 2005 Lincoln Center American Songbook Series, a highly-acclaimed stint at Feinstein's at the Regency, and many symphonic gigs across the country, not to mention the odd Jeff Blumenkrantz Songbook Concert and seemingly every New Voices Concert at Symphony Space. She has two wonderful solo CDs (Leaving Home, Anything Goes - Rebecca Luker sings Cole Porter) and a deservedly impressive discography.Today, she sings a song that does not appear in the songbook. (Something for Volume Two!!) It's called "Lovely Lies," and it has lyrics by the wonderful Beth Blatt (The Mistress Cycle) and music by me. It was written for Rebecca's recent engagement at Feinstein's, and hopefully she will sing it again when she returns there this May 9-20 for her encore engagement. (Call 212-339-4095 to reserve now!) Recorded 2/22/06.

Episode #7: So you've been wondering why that explicit rating has been hovering over this podcast? Finally! Here it is: one of two songs in the book with dirty words in it! Parents (and prudes), be warned.Remember last week's episode with Judy Blazer as the Jewish mother whose son has just come out? Well, this week it's that son and his best friend at a gay bar. The song is "Moving Right Along" (from the abandoned project Fits and Starts), with music and lyrics by me.I'm thrilled to be joined by one of my best friends, the super-funny Ryan Perry, who inspired this song in the first place. (Yes, we went to gay bars together. No, we weren't nearly as horrible as these guys.) Ryan hasn't been acting and singing much lately (Booooo!), but those of you lucky enough to have caught him in Forever Plaid or Whorehouse Goes Public or the tours of The Full Monty and Floyd Collins will remember how fantastic he is. Recorded 1/15/06.And I'm happy to report that I have lured him back to the stage to appear in my Birdland concert on February 13th, along with former podcast guests Judy Blazer, Vicki Clark, Rebecca Luker, and Sally Wilfert. Call 212 581-3080 for reservations.
