This week features two films centered on a group of hikers encountering a backwoods killer in the mountains executed to quite different results. DON'T GO IN THE WOODS (1981) is one of the infamous video nasties banned in the UK during the 1980s. Did it deserve it? We then focus on a slasher film that has gained its reputation over time, JUST BEFORE DAWN (1981) directed by Jeff Lieberman.
Jeff received four degrees at MIT (Physics, Math, Mech E and Robotics). He hosted “Time Warp” on the Discovery Channel about the wonders of science, and made large-scale art for 15 years. By external measures, he was incredibly successful. But inside, something was missing. This disconnect led him to a deep depression in high school, and chronic pain for almost 20 years after that. Jeff learned quantum mechanics before learning about his emotions. He marvels at the fact that we can measure the external universe to 10-decimal accuracy, but most of us don't learn about our insides: our emotions, what leads to flourishing, how to take great care of ourselves. Years of personal exploration transformed him, leading to a determination to not have the road to joy be difficult for others to find. He has spent the last 15 years training in meditation, personal development, and group dynamics for well being, facilitating high school students through a 3-week intensive and adults through an 18-month program. He speaks around the world on the topics of art, science, education, healing, and consciousness. See more of his work at bea.st. Have you ever been tickled by the sheer absurdity of a horror film that's so bad it's good? Chad and I just couldn't keep a straight face while dissecting the 1976 B-movie "Squirm," where electrified worms with pincers wreak havoc in a small town. We crack up at the ludicrous sound effects and the wonky Southern accents that add a thick layer of cheese to this cult classic. As we navigate through the cringey romantic subplot and the surprisingly gross moments that somehow remain effective, we promise you'll be squirming with laughter or possibly hiding behind your sofa in mock terror.Imagine a film so outrageous that it becomes the perfect backdrop for your next movie night with friends. That's "Squirm," for you—a riotous blend of chuckle-inducing one-liners and special effects that are a sight to behold. From the bewildering choice of egg creams as a movie beverage to the idea of interactive screenings where you dress up and snack in theme, Chad and I muse over what makes this flick an experience rather than just a visual feast. And let's not forget the trivia gems, like the stunning number of worms used in production or the fact that Kim Basinger and Sylvester Stallone could've been the leads—snippets sure to wriggle their way into your conversation arsenal.Wrapping up the worm talk, we tip our hats to the unintended legacy "Squirm" has left behind, including a ripple effect on New England's fishing industry and a wedding video fiasco that's the stuff of legends. We also peek into the unexpected career trajectories of the cast and crew, whose post-worm adventures are as varied as the creepy crawlies themselves. So grab your Pabst Blue Ribbon, settle in, and join Chad and me for a podcast episode that celebrates the slimy, the unsettling, and the downright silly side of horror cinema. Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Jeff Lieberman, Writer, Director, Producer, “BELLA! This Woman Belongs In The House” About Harvey's guest: Today's guest, Jeff Lieberman, is an award-winning journalist, producer and filmmaker whose documentary films have won him world wide acclaim. His 2013 film entitled “Re-emerging: the Jews of Nigeria” got rave reviews at the world's most prestigious film festivals and was proclaimed by critics as one of the must-see documentaries of the year. In 2015 he released his celebrated film entitled, “The Amazing Nina Simone”, which had a hugely successful theatrical run in 10 countries and is widely considered to be THE definitive cinematic tribute to this legendary music artist. And now, our guest is about to release a monumentally important film about the first and the greatest female trailblazer in the history of American politics: the unstoppable force of nature known as Bella Abzug. In 1970, when America – and the world – was a patriarchy ruled by men, Bella Abzug challenged the status quo, running a groundbreaking grass roots campaign from the streets of Manhattan, that elevated her all the way to the halls of Congress from 1971 to 1977. With her irrepressible energy, fearless Bronx swagger, and captivatingly blunt oratorical frankness, she was determined to break up the “old boys' club”, and that she did. She battled for women's rights, seniors' rights, children's rights, gay rights, racial equality - in fact, she fought for civil rights for everyone. She fought vigorously against the Vietnam War. She endured the mounting forces from both the right and the left, and the powers of the Nixon Administration, the CIA, FBI, and of course, the media. The film is entitled, “Bella: This Woman's Place is in the House”, and it won the prestigious Library of Congress Ken Burns Prize for Film. This fascinating and compelling film includes never-before-seen home movies, audio diaries, newly-discovered news footage, and interviews with Hilary Clinton, Barbara Streisand, Shirley MacLaine, Lily Tomlin, Gloria Steinem, Marlo Thomas, and many more. There can be no question that Bella Abzug paved the way for future generations of female leadership, not only in politics, but in EVERY field. And thanks to our guest, the whole world is FINALLY going to know this amazing woman once and for all. Jeff Lieberman is the co-founder of Sleepawake Camp. A play on the “sleep away camp,” Sleepawake is a boot camp for the body, heart, and mind. The summer program is geared towards people ages 18 to 27 who are ready to learn all of the things that are never taught in school: conflict resolution, emotional regulation, mindful communication, and so much more.Jeff, along with his co-founder (and former Wonder Dome guest) Cat Tweedie have run the camp for a year, and it was amazingly successful in its first season. It is a powerful container for young people who carry a sense that something's missing from our culture, that are maybe looking around going, is this it? Over the past 15 years, Jeff's been training in meditation, personal development, and group dynamics for well-being. He creates spaces where others can tap into their own wisdom and insight, using art to inspire wonder and awe. He also beautifully and authentically speaks to the decade-plus he spent navigating deep depression despite seemingly having it all together from the outside. This year, Sleepawake Camp runs from June 17 to July 16, 2023. If you're between the ages of 18-27 and long for that kind of depth and connection to life, to your sense of purpose and well-being, submit an application online. There are many, many others who are asking the question, “Is this all there is?” and finding the answer to be no. There's so much more. At some point in life, we all must come face to face with the reality that we don't know everything. It's impossible of course, but in the name of safety, we have a hidden desire to know what life has in store for us this next day, next week or next year. This "not knowing" often produces a feeling of fear that freezes us in place... but what if we could turn to wonder instead? Life becomes much more enjoyable when we take this approach, but as you'll learn in this episode, we must be willing to heal from our past if we are ever to make wonder a normal part of our experience. In our conversation with Jeff Lieberman, we explore this topic and much more in how we've been programmed by society and our upbringing... as well as how to heal and deprogram ourselves, so that we can enjoy life to the fullest. One of our favorite analogies that Jeff shares in the very beginning of this episode is the difference between having a map VS a compass. Just like how our mind is a brilliant tool, so is a map. But much of our joy in life comes from unexpected experiences that we cannot see or plan for - which is why having a compass (our heart) is a much more reliable tool to help us navigate life in an expansive, life-giving way. We hope you enjoy this conversation and get a ton out of it as we know we did! If you'd like to learn more about Jeff's Sleepawake Camp, go to http://sleepawake.camp Sleepawake Camp is a month-long summer intensive for 18-27 year olds to learn all the things they could've been offered about how to live thriving, joyous, and connected lives. The curriculum weaves science, psychology, game-play, and ancient wisdom to support embodiment, creative expression, working with difficult emotions, deepening self-awareness and metacognition, and more, in a supportive community -- a bootcamp for the body, heart, and mind. Did you feel connected, supported and ready as you headed into adulthood? Did you know yourself? Well Jeff Lieberman didn't and had a really tough time of teen life and early adulthood, despite from the outside looking like an all-star student and human with 4 university degrees, a successful large-scale art business and hosting a show on the History Channel. Jeff jokes that he learned quantum mechanics before learning about his emotions but is quick to point out the tragedy of this. His new camp Sleepawake has had incredible results and in today's show you'll get a window into just how much we can do now, and for our young adults and teens, to steer a happier, healthier course as connected ,purposeful individuals and communities. We hope you didn't think the Halloween thrills and chills were over yet because if you did think that you'd be sorely mistaken. VERY sore and VERY mistaken. This week we head to the rolling hills of San Francisco with a gaggle of the postiest Post Punks and a brain sucking baby in the SOV Horror police procedural, Night Feeder (1988). Then we take a trip to the woods with Gregg Henry and two big ol' gigglin' hillbilly baby boys in Jeff Lieberman's backwoods slash 'em up classic, Just Before Dawn (1981). Even the creepiest holiday of the year needs an adorable moment....On this episode we get to dial it back for a slice of underrated Halloween fun that audiences really haven't seen since 2004 and has built up a cult following of it's own finally finding it's way back to the universe now on Blu-Ray for the very first time. Get ready for 'Satan's Little Helper'.Nine Year Old Douglas Whooly is obsessed with the handheld video game "Satan's Little Helper" and annoyed that the attention of his big sister Jenna (Katheryn Winnick) whose just returned home from college is more on her new boyfriend Alex then him. These two concerns collide on Halloween, when Douglas witnesses a serial killer in a devil mask posing his victims like outdoor Halloween displays. Now understanding how this is some real carnage going on in this small town, Douglas gladly becomes this Satan's Little Helper; and that not only bad news for Douglas, but for Alex and for Jenna's mom Merill (Amanda Plummer) because now the whole town is in danger from this mad man on the one evening a year we let all inhibitions and logic fly out the window,Ultimately a different breed of Halloween film, Satan's Little Helper is appropriately grizzly in all the right spots but it has a sinister sense of humor that gets wrapped up in some genuinely human moments with some amazing performance from top to bottom. Now out on Blu-Ray from our friends at Synapse Films, we had the unique pleasure of sitting down with the one and only writer/director Jeff Lieberman to talk about the origins of the film, the caliber of the ensemble it's distinct sense of humor that isn't subservient to the BS of life and so very much more.....

PUBLIC VERSION. Filmmaker Jeff Lieberman (SATAN'S LITTLE HELPER, SQUIRM, JUST BEFORE DAWN, BLUE SUNSHINE, REMOTE CONTROL) joins Adam, Joe, and Arwen to discuss his long career. From the pros and cons of 35mm vs DCP, vinyl records/analogue recordings vs CDs/digital files, Blu-Ray vs VHS… to how Jeff wasn't even a fan of movies (“Why spend 2 hours of a date sitting in silence and staring at a screen together when you could be talking to each other instead?”) until he saw Michelangelo Antonioni's BLOW-UP (1966) - a transformative cinematic experience that completely changed his direction in life… to how the positive affirmation and encouragement of a teacher made him realize that he was actually a talented writer… to how an anti-drug short film he made in 1972 (THE RINGER) helped secure him as the director for his screenplay SQUIRM in 1976… to why it's a compliment to hear from fans that he “messed up their childhood”… to the real life horror movie set up that inspired Jeff's big film that got away… to how a film's score can be a disservice to creating true suspense… to a lesson in Hollywood accounting… to the writing of his new book DAY OF THE LIVING ME: ADVENTURES OF A SUBVERSIVE CULT FILMMAKER FROM THE GOLDEN AGE (now available!)… this in-depth conversation with a true legend of cinema is as enjoyable as it is educational. Dr. Arwen provides “Hollywood Therapy” for a listener worried about going crazy between gigs and Jeff reveals how dancing with a gorilla on Halloween inspired SATAN'S LITTLE HELPER and the real reason why most fans don't even realize that he wrote the second sequel to a beloved 80's children's movie.

It's no secret that there is a lot of suffering happening on this planet, especially when it comes to mental health. When you tune into the actual amount of suffering that is happening right now it will blow your mind and it takes practice to let your brain even know how to tune into this. This is why we are thrilled and honored to have a special guest with us today, Jeff Lieberman. Jeff has an incredible story with an extensive background having received four degrees at MIT but he was led down the path of the beauty and intelligence of his emotions as well as the varied perspectives of consciousness, after suffering from a deep depression. Listen along to Jeff's amazing story so you can learn: How many of our behaviors are defense mechanisms What generational trauma is and why it's so important to heal it What body intelligence is Games to play to help you gain metacognition The camp he is offering for 18-24 year olds And so much more! The western world lives in a very disembodied state and this has happened over generations. Through Jeff's Sleepawake camp, he wants to help 18-24 year olds have a space to learn embodiment and so much more. #213 In life, we learn about history, english, math, and science. But no one ever teaches us how to thrive as a human being. No one ever teaches us about the intelligence of our emotions, about resolving interpersonal conflict, about healthy embodiment, creative self-expression, how to connect to our deepest sense of purpose, and so much more that's needed to be a happy healthy human being. In this episode, I welcome back Jeff Lieberman to dive into that with me and share his incredible wisdom with us. Jeff is a jack of all science trades, and many non-science trades too, actually. He is a mechanical engineer, a design consultant, a photographer, composer and kinetic sculptor. He will talk about his spiritual exploration and what he learned along the way, how our beliefs keep us from achieving the fullness of ourselves, and the life changing work he is doing through his Sleepawake Camp to bring a paradigm shift to education and relationships that will educate the emotional and spiritual aspects of people's being as well as their mental and physical. Tune in to our conversation as he asks us to challenge our perception of what we are, our relationship to the universe, and our relationship to one another. About Jeff: Jeff Lieberman is the creative director of Sleepawake, a 4-week residential intensive for 18 to 24 year olds to explore the potent paths to embodied, engaged, and authentic living. JUST BEFORE DAWN (1981) Directed by Jeff Lieberman sees a group of young people – among them Gregg Henry, Chris Lemmon, and Deborah Benson – heading into the Oregon mountains to check out some property one of them has inherited. While camping in the woods, they are attacked by two hillbilly brothers trying to kill them all. At this, they mostly succeed. Pretty standard slasher movie stuff, right? And, yet, Just Before Dawn is anything but. It's merits as a horror movie are substantial, whether it's the first-rate cast, composer Brad Fidel's spooky and sparse score, or the expertly utilized and gorgeously photographed outdoor locations.

Sometimes life gets in the way of podcasting, so new episodes will be on hiatus for a month while we explore episodes that can be found behind the official Coolness Chronicles Patreon paywall, like this little morsel. It's not every day your wonky yet affable host talks about a movie he loves. Might as well be a documentary about video games. A shocking indictment against gamerz and their detachment from reality and their willingness to blindly help a serial killer because they saw it in a video game. Got a suggestion? The slasher film is one the biggest subgenres of horror films. But how did it come about and gain such popularity? This episode tracks the progression of (mostly) American slashers, focusing on how we got to the most formative years of the genre. ▶️Discussions include: How real-life influences and familiar settings were reflected in ‘60s and ‘70s films, thus inspiring the most popular slasher years; cementing slasher movie tropes; hooks, tonal changes, elevating intellectual and visual creativity as the years progressed; franchising; audience accessibility to slashers; recycling, resuscitation and reinvention of the genre, leading to the next evolutionary step to recapture the magic of the slasher movie trend. ▶️**PICKS OF THE WEEK** 1980s: “One heck of a final scene!” —Lindsay’s Pick, SLEEPAWAY CAMP (1983): A twisted summer camp story with a mysterious killer murdering foul-mouthed bullies. A deeper psychology behind this one. **Starring Felissa Rose, Jonathan Tiersten, Karen Fields, Katherine Kamhi. Directed by Robert Hiltzik.** —Justin’s Pick, JUST BEFORE DAWN (1981): A group of young hikers are hunted down by murderous, ruthless, inbred twins. **Starring George Kennedy, Gregg Henry, Chris Lemmon, Deborah Benson. Directed by Jeff Lieberman.** 1990s: “The one you’d never expect!” —Lindsay’s Pick, OFFICE KILLER (1997): After a repressed wallflower accidentally kills her jerk of a boss, she’s inspired to “correct” other problematic co-workers. **Starring Carol Kane, Jeanne Tripplehorn, Molly Ringwald. Directed by Cindy Sherman.** —Justin’s Pick, POPCORN (1991): An unknown killer seeks vengeance by picking off teenagers at an all-night horror movie marathon. **Starring Jill Schoelen, Dee Wallace, Tom Villard. Directed by Mark Herrier.** ▶️MURRAYMOMENT: Revisiting an adorable, unscripted scene in STRIPES (1981), featuring Billy and legendary scream queen, P.J. Soles. ▶️FINAL THOUGHTS: Hitting on a few influential/prominent Canadian slasher films, then how HALLOWEEN (2018) renews hope in the continuation of the slasher genre. ▶️NEXT UP: UNCLE BUCK (1989)!
The Halloween spirit continues to possess us and this week we’re talking SATAN’S LITTLE HELPER! We give our thoughts on the Rabid remake(we hate it!) and then dive right into the movie. Written and directed by Jeff Lieberman, Satan’s Little Helper stars Katheryn Winnick as a girl home for Halloween and Amanda Plummer as her mother who are forced to suffer at the hands of a serial killer dressed as Satan because their garbage younger brother/son has lost touch with reality and thinks its all pretend. There’s a lot going on here and while its allegedly a ‘satire’, we don’t really buy it. Its entertaining but the characters really suck.
THERE IS NO ESCAPE FROM THE FINAL CHAPTER... Gabe and special guest Patrick Ripoll from Tracks of the Damned are back and finishing what they started: an interminable look back at the slasher movies of 1981. The complete list includes 42 films that friends, colleagues, and random people on the internet consider to be slashers. The last episode is the shortest, including discussion of 13 movies – Hell Night (directed by Tom DeSimone), Don’t Go in the Woods (directed by James Bryan), Lady Stay Dead (directed by Terry Bourke), Absurd (aka: Rosso sangue, Monster Hunter, and Horrible, directed by Joe D’Amato), Just Before Dawn (directed by Jeff Lieberman), Strange Behavior (directed by Michael Laughlin), Hospital Massacre (directed by Boaz Davidson), Nightmares (directed by Romano Scavolini), Dark Night of the Scarecrow (directed by Frank De Felitta), Halloween II (directed by Rick Rosenthal), Saturday the 14th (directed by Howard R. Cohen), Madman (directed by Joe Giannone), and The Prowler (directed by Joseph Zito). Do note that after recording for 5 hours, the timing of our tracks and communications got a little off. The problem is mitigated to the best of Gabe’s editing ability, but there are still a few odd moments where reactions are off time. Jeff Lieberman is a jack of all science trades, and many non-science trades too, actually. He is a mechanical engineer, a design consultant, a photographer, composer and kinetic sculptor. He hosts the Discovery Channel’s “Time Warp” TV show, has performed at Carnegie Hall, and gave a TedX talk at Cambridge. But the common thread that runs through Lieberman’s various endeavors is his use of technology to elicit a sense of wonder.
