Is A HAUNTING IN VENICE a horror movie? The marketing makes it seem like Kenneth Branagh has reinvented his Hercule Poirot series as a haunted house horror thriller, with grisly deaths, supernatural happenings, and an overwhelming atmosphere of dread. But does the movie match the marketing? Yes, and no. The Brothers dig into the film's genre positioning in a roundtable discussion. They also example the film's theatricality, Branagh's roots as a Shakespeare actor and director, and the film's examination of spiritualism vs materialism. Orlando Bloom Expresses Interest in Returning for the Next “Pirates of the Caribbean” Film

Fans of the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise were thrilled when Orlando Bloom, who played the role of Will Turner in the first three films, recently expressed his interest in returning for the sixth film of the swashbuckling adventure franchise. During a recent interview with Parade, Bloom shared his thoughts on potentially revisiting the character of Will Turner, saying, “I wouldn't mind seeing what Will looked like today in some ways, because he was such this earnest guy, but after rumbling around the bottom of the ocean for as long as he would have done at this point, it'd be interesting to see how he surfaces and what he's like.” Bloom first portrayed the character in the franchise's first film, “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl,” in 2003. The character was initially depicted in the film as a blacksmith's apprentice working in Port Royal, Jamaica, who embarks on a life-changing adventure with Captain Jack Sparrow, played by Johnny Depp, after the love of his life, Elizabeth Swann, played by Keira Knightley, is kidnapped by pirates. Bloom returned as Will Turner in the franchise's second and third films, “Dead Man's Chest” and “At World's End,” respectively. In these films, Will replaces Davy Jones as the immortal captain of the Flying Dutchman. This plot point was revisited in the franchise's fifth film, “Dead Men Tell No Tales,” in which Will and Elizabeth's son, Henry, played by Brenton Thwaites, seeks the Trident of Poseidon to destroy it and break all curses imposed by the sea, including the one that binds his father to the Dutchman. Bloom also made a brief cameo in the franchise's fifth film, including the film's post-credits scene, which teased a potential sixth film involving the return of Davy Jones. Should Disney move forward with “Pirates of the Caribbean 6,” which has been in various stages of development since 2011, it could be a family affair with Brenton Thwaites also expressing interest in returning for a sixth film or spinoff. “Pirates of the Caribbean” remains one of Disney's most successful film franchises, with all installments grossing over $650 million worldwide. It was also the first franchise to have two films, “Dead Man's Chest” and “On Stranger Tides,” gross over $1 billion at the worldwide box office. The franchise even crossed over with the open-world video game “Sea of Thieves” in 2021 with a free expansion that included a new original story featuring Jack Sparrow and Davy Jones. The original 1967 theme park from which the films are derived continues to operate at Disneyland. As fans eagerly await the return of the beloved “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise, the potential return of Orlando Bloom as Will Turner has only added to the excitement surrounding the upcoming sixth film.

The Black Pearl and the Flying Dutchman sail into the dreaded Maelstrom, and the battle begins. Jack escapes the brig, and duels Davy Jones on the mast of the Flying Dutchman. Will and Elizabeth take this moment to marry each other, with Barbossa officiating. Character arcs reach their end and story moments come full circle when Will Turner is killed by Davy Jones. Jack sacrifices his dream to save his friend, and the Flying Dutchman has a new captain. After the storm is over, the Pearl and the Dutchman, now under the command of Will Turner, destroy the Endeavour and Lord Cutler Beckett along with it. The pirates celebrate, Will and Elizabeth share one day together, and Barbossa steals the Black Pearl from Jack yet again. On the swashbuckling finale of the Old Millennials Remember Movies SUMMER OF BRUCKHEIMER, co-hosts Tyler and Angela discuss the entirety of Disney's "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise. Yes, we know talking about Johnny Depp is a thorny issue these days, but thankfully, the charm, spectacle and weirdness of the "Pirates" franchise extends far beyond a single actor, and it's still fair to say the character of Captain Jack Sparrow qualifies as a definitive early 2000s pop culture phenomenon. The co-hosts predictably gush about the first film, 2003's still spectacular "The Curse of the Black Pearl," a blockbuster that takes big risks and delivers against long odds. Seriously, who would've thought a movie based on a theme park ride could work? Credit to the off-kilter presence of drunken/insane Captain Jack, steady romantic leads in the form of Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley, a scenery-chewing Geoffrey Rush as cursed baddie Captain Barbossa, lush production design, quality CGI and daring direction by Gore Verbinski. Tyler and Angela also discuss the sequels and rigorously defend the divisive 2nd and 3rd entries, 2006's "Dead Man's Chest" and 2007's "At World's End." Those Verbinski sequels are almost adversarial in their strange and twisty creative choices, and Tyler in particular loves it when filmmakers deliberately antagonize the masses. The co-hosts also recall experiencing the revamped "Pirates of the Caribbean" ride at Disney World on its opening day (much ado about almost nothing) as well as seeing "Dead Man's Chest" on their honeymoon. The Old Millennials also slog through the series weak point, 2011's "On Stranger Tides," then (sorta) defend the much-maligned 2017 entry, "Dead Men Tell No Tales." Zombie sharks! The key to a successful "Pirates" movie? Let Jack Sparrow be an instrument of chaos and let the other characters deliver key story elements. So take a listen, me hearties, and try not to be eaten by a Kraken while sinking down to Davy Jones' locker. It's the oversized finale to the summer-long look at the blockbuster films of producer Jerry Bruckheimer on Old Millennials Remember Movies! Yo ho! Yo Ho, Yo Ho, here we go again! It's movie number four in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise: "On Stranger Tides." This was the long awaited installment following a extended hiatus that saw the changing of many leaders in the Disney company including one of the producers behind the original Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy. Perhaps it is changing of the guards and the EXTREME trimming of the budget (made for 100 Million dollars LESS than At World's End.) that makes this film feel like it's...missing something.Though we are missing a Will Turner and a Elizabeth...Turner, we still have Captain Jack Sparrow...though he doesn't do much captain-ing in this movie. Gibbs, is back and loyal as ever. Barbossa, a turn-coat Privateer in the service of his Majesty. Jack is in need of an adventure and finds one in an old flame played by the intoxicatingly gorgeous Penelope Cruz who turns out to be the long-lost daughter of Blackbeard himself, played by Ian McShane. Severely watered down supernatural elements and a ragged supporting cast offer some level of fun but may have earned it's reputation as the most disappointing additions to the Pirates of the Caribbean. But don't let that stop you from listening in on the more rewarding elements of the movie. Email us with questions, comments and ideas for future episodesdisneychannelsurfers@gmail.comFollow us on InstagramListen to us on Spotify or wherever you listen to podcastsJoin us for the final film in our voyage through the Pirates of the Caribbean movies with "Dead Men Tell No Tales"

After the unexpected success of the first Pirates film, Disney gave Gore Verbinski the reigns and a sack of cash to make something bigger, better, and more profitable. The two films that followed (Dead Man's Chest and At World's End) left audiences divided and never quite lived up to the original. We're taking a look back to see if maybe history has been a little too unkind to these two films and see if we can find the buried treasure in this franchise based on a 50 year old amusement park ride.

Did the Pirates franchise stick the landing? Is "No Country for Old Men" the best of the Coens' filmography? Listen to find out!

Growing up as a kid in France, there wasn’t a chance that Philippe Saisse would end up doing anything other than creating music. Quite simply, this child prodigy was a jazz drummer at the age of five, playing in his father’s jazz band. After winning a scholarship at the Berklee School of Music in Boston, he studied under the great vibraphonist and percussionist, Gary Burton. The rest is history as Philippe followed Burton’s lead as a vibraphonist and marimba instrumentalist, but also as a keyboardist. As a multi-instrumentalist, he caught the ear of Al DiMeola and was invited to play on DiMeola’s ‘Splendido Hotel’ recording. Saisse provided vocals, playing keyboards and Moog Bass, and even provided outstanding marimba solos throughout the project. During his career as an arranger, session keyboardist, composer and producer, he’s worked with Chaka Khan, the Rolling Stones, Al Jarreau, David Sanborn, Brian Wilson, Bill Evans, and David Bowie. Recently, he has reconnected with drummer Simon Phillips and bassist Pino Palladino to form PSP. This jazz-fusion trio is truly an experimental collaboration that pushes the limits of improvisational composition. He has produced many solo projects over his career; his most recent being ‘At World’s Edge’, which led to the creation of PSP. Inside MusiCast welcomes Philippe Saisse.
