Sommerfolge geht's wieder um die Forschung zum Weltraumwetter und den tollen Vortrag von Manuela Stadlober-Temmer am 5. KTT. Zuvor gibt's aber in den Space News Neuigkeiten zu Dunkler Materie, und danach beantworten wir drei Fragen, die wir zum Thema Sonne bekommen haben. KTT-Insights: Das Weltraumwetter und die Sonne (Manuela Temmer) Wir haben jetzt einige Beobachtungen des solaren Magnetfeldes an einzelnen Punkten im Sonnensystem. Was ist mit dem Rest? Modelle sind da sehr wichtig und „hot topic“, um die Beobachtungslücken zu füllen. Sonnenwinde können mehrere Millionen km/h haben! In welche Richtung gehen die Ausbrüche, die man im Coronographen sieht? Zu uns, von uns weg, seitlich? Nicht so einfach festzustellen! Die schnellsten CMEs erreichen die Erde in weniger als 24h. Gute Beobachtungsdaten sind wichtig! Wenn man Betreiber von Stromnetzen, Satelliten usw. eine Weltraumwetterwarnung gibt, dass uns ein starker Sonnensturm treffen könnte, dann müssen diese Daten auch verlässlich sein. Die meisten Magnetfeldlinien auf der Sonne sind geschlossen und gehen schleifenförmig zur Sonne zurück; über offene Magnetfeldlinien können aber Plasmateilchen in den interplanetaren Raum hinausgeschleudert werden. Besonders interessant sind auch koronale Löcher, die sich über eher inaktiven Gebieten bilden und die ein sehr schnelles Hinausströmen der Sonnenausbrüche erlauben. Das Verstehen des Magnetfelds der Sonne (speziell die z-Komponente, also die in unsere Richtung) ist so etwas wie der heilige Gral der Sonnenwindforschung; verschiedene Orientierungen haben hier verschiedene Effekte auf das Erdmagnetfeld und damit auf die Erde. Was gibts alles bei Sonnenausbrüchen? • Erzeugt werden sie durch magnetische Kurzschlüsse auf der Sonne, die dadurch auftreten, dass der Äquator der Sonne schneller rotiert als die Polgebiete, wodurch die Magnetfelder durcheinander kommen • die CMEs • SEP (klingt sehr österreichisch, aber nicht Sepp aka Josef, sondern „Solar Energetic Particles“, entstehen ähnlich wie die Teilchen der Erdionosphäre, die Polarlichter erzeugen, bei Flares, und haben Geschwindigkeiten von bis zu einigen % der Lichtgeschwindigkeit (können die Erde in ½ h erreichen!). Tauchen als „Schneegestöber“ in den Aufnahmen auf. • Flares • Koronale Wellen • kurzzeitige Verdunkelung der Corona Kombinationen von Beobachtung und Modellen werden verwendet, um die magnetohydrodynamischen Prozesse zu verstehen. → wird für die Voraussagen verwendet. Ähnlich einem Gewehrschuss gibt es einen Trigger, einen Treiber und eine Schockwelle: Schuss (magnetischer Kurzschluss), Patrone (CME), Schallwelle (magnetische Schockwelle, die sich mit einer speziellen Geschwindigkeit („magnetosonic speed“) ausbreitet, viel schneller als der CME selbst). CMEs wechselwirken auch untereinander, was alles furchtbar kompliziert macht: schnelle Teilchenströme werden durch langsamere zusammengepresst, SIRs bilden sich (stream interface regions). Wenn CIRs (induzierte Ströme im Erdkörper) und CMEs miteinander interagieren, können sogenannte Ringladungen in niederen Breiten um die Erde auftreten → weit südlich auftretende rote Polarlichter! Es können sich auch infolge der SIRs magnetische Jets in der Erdmagnetosphäre bilden, die Richtung Erdboden gehen und dort wiederum Polarlichter usw. erzeugen können. Aktuelle interdisziplinäre Forschung zwischen Sonnenphysikern und Erd-Magnetosphärenforschern. Die Effekte starker Sonnenstürme können eine beträchtliche Ausdehnung der Thermosphäre bewirken, die damit stärker in Satellitenbahnen hineinreicht und diese abbremsen kann. Feb 2022: starlink event: 40 Starlink-Satelliten gingen verloren, Sonnensturm war mitverursachend. ESA space safety program: https://swe.ssa.esa.int/ionospheric-weather: Registrieren und everyone can Daten über die Ionosphäre erhalten. Realtime! Uni Graz/TU Graz: SODA (Satellite Orbit DecAy): prognostiziert den Höhenverlust von Satelliten in bestimmten Höhen aufgrund von Sonnenwinden. Vorhersage: zwischen Bz min am L1 und dem max. Höhenverlust eines Satelliten liegen ca. 15-20h, die für die Berechnung des Höhenverlusts verwendet werden. Wie weit sind wir in der Space Weather Vorhersage? Bei den Vorgängen an sich gut, beim Zeitpunkt um die 2 Tage daneben → noch kein Produkt, dass man der Industrie anbieten kann. → wir brauchen mehr Forschung, wieder einmal. Wir sind gerade (2024) im Maximum des aktuellen Sonnenzyklus, doch gerade in der 2. Hälfte des Zyklus sind die stärksten Ausbrüche zu erwarten. Sonnenforschung ist höchst aktuell! The lawyer and longtime community organizer talks about her two-year ban from practicing immigration law, how she is responding to it, and her history of border organizing and advocacy in Arizona. In July the Board of Immigration Appeals ordered that prominent federal immigration lawyer and longtime community organizer Margo Cowan be barred for two years from practicing law in immigration court for “violating the rules of professional conduct.” For this week's podcast interview, The Border Chroniclecaught up with Cowan in her Tucson office to hear her side of the story. This story includes Cowan's long history of advocacy and organizing in the community—including know-your-rights campaigns in Tucson in the 1970s, work with the Sanctuary Movement and HIV/AIDS awareness in the 1980s, and working for the Tohono O'odham Nation in the 1990s, where she witnessed the onset of border militarization on the native reservation that, she asserts, has now become an “occupied” territory. (By the way, here is the link to Cowan's book about the Tohono O'odham, cowritten with historian Guadalupe Castillo. We mention the book in the podcast). Throughout the conversation, Cowan talks about her work as a public defender, work that led to the founding of the organization Keep Tucson Together in 2011. KTT is a pro bono legal clinic whose mission is to stop deportations and family separations in southern Arizona. In the interview, Cowan explains the two-year ban and how she is appealing the ruling, and she vividly describes just how intimidating immigration court is. “I hate immigration court,” she says. “I hate what they do to our community. I hate the fact that they are cloaked in some quantum of respectability. I left that community when I was around 19 and lived in different parts of the country. I grew up on a farm. How long have you been in Tucson? I am going on my 13th year in Tucson. What brought you to Tucson? My wife always wanted to live in the desert, and her sister lived in Tucson so we would visit a couple times and we really liked the area. How long have you been retired? I retired in 2007 – 13 years. How has retirement been for you? When I retired I didn't see myself playing golf or doing a lot of the things that people dream about doing. I really didn't know what I was going to do, actually. So when I became familiar with No More Deaths and what was going on in the border I jumped into it with both feet. No More Deaths How long have you been a volunteer with NMD? When we had just moved to Tucson, I had no idea of the number of deaths going on in the border. So one of our neighbors invited us to go to a No More Deaths meeting and ever since then we've been a part of the group. Do you (or have you) done other volunteering? With what organizations? The northern Mexico projects – I go to Altar once a month with other volunteers and work with shelters, I've been doing that for the past 6 years. I work with volunteers, gather supplies, donations, with leaders of local shelters and Samaritans. What work does NMD do? The mission of No More Deaths is to end death and suffering on the Mexico-USA border. One of the first things we started was walking the desert trails to put water out, which is something we still do. We do a lot of work on the west side of the desert- 30% of deaths occur there. Besides providing humanitarian aid, we began to do something called abuse-documentation due to people reporting how badly they were treated in short-term custody. We help with a free clinic in Tucson – Keep Tucson Together – and a Missing Migrant hotline, to help keep people out of detention centers. We also do donations, camps. Can you tell a bit of history about NMD? A lot of desert-aide work, walking out on the trails – mobile camps, humanitarian aid. Search and rescue. It has gotten much bigger, it used to be just desert-aid and work in Nogales, but we've developed many new services, like the Keep Tucson Together clinic. When we first started we had a budget of about $100k or less, now our budget is around $1 million. We've gone from all volunteers to now hiring staff to handle whatever the volunteers can't. We've expanded mostly all along the desert. What part of NMD work interests you most? Why? I used to be in the desert quite a bit – but that changed for me, I don't tolerate the heat as much – so we attract a lot of people that volunteer in the desert. But I am part of all the different branches of services that we do, like traveling with donations. What attracted you to volunteering with NMD? My parents always believed in looking out for our neighbors, so that translated for me into mostly working in the service fields – like education and mental health. When we did part of our training and we went out to the field, we had an experience with a man who was around 40 years old who had been left in a ditch for about two-three days with no food and water- I couldn't believe what I had just experienced, it feels unreal. It was my first major awareness that something awful was happening in our beautiful desert. Situation What are the biggest issues NMD is addressing right now? The detention centers with COVID is a big part right now. We also do a lot of focus on bonds – the KTT – the leadership legal clinic. We had a GoFundMe effort where we raised $40k for migrants. Selain itu, Myanmar yang saat ini tengah dikuasai oleh junta militer dikabarkan tidak akan hadir di KTT kecuali direpresentasikan oleh perwakilan nonpolitik. Hal ini dikarenakan mayoritas negara anggota ASEAN serta AS sendiri menolak sikap represif junta terhadap warga negaranya, namun tak dapat bertindak banyak untuk mengubah keadaan di sana. Today on 30 Minutes we spoke with immigration attorney and community leader Margo Cowan about her work as the Project Coordinator for Keep Tucson Together, a grassroots, pro-bono project that is working directly with community members to stop deportations and the separation of families in Southern Arizona. She gave an overview of how their work has shifted from the Obama administration to the Trump administration to the beginning of the Biden administration. Keep Tucson Together is a project of No More Deaths that works side by side with community members applying for status or facing deportation and that trains participants to help each other through the immigration court process. KTT also works with the national movement to give sanctuary to those facing removal, and to stop the raids and deportations. KTT’s legal team helps people who are eligible for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival (DACA) to file their documents. KTT maintains a bond fund to get people out of immigration detention. KTT helps people become United States citizenship. Margo Cowan has been an advocate for migrant justice for more than 30 years and has been involved with the Migrant Trail since its first journey in 2004. Before becoming an attorney, she was a farmworker organizer mentored by Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta. Margo’s efforts in the areas of border and immigration policy, as well as the development and representation of undocumented persons and refugees, has spanned decades. She is a Defense Attorney for the Pima County Public Defender, was the lead counsel for the Sanctuary movement, where churches and synagogues offered sanctuary to the undocumented facing deportation and co-founded the organization No More Deaths, which seeks to reduce the number of deaths in the Arizona Desert. Vuosia sitten puhuttiin paljon ikääntyneiden johtamisesta, kun nyt sen sijaan nuorten johtamisesta. Toki kuitenkin niin, että johtamista ei pidä luokitella iän mukaan, vaikka eri sukupolvet isossa kuvassa muuttavat johtajuutta ja arvostavat eri asioita. Lisäksi nykyisin tuodaan aiempaa enemmän esiin sitä, että johtajuuden tulee muuttua ja johtajien tulee kehittää johtamistaan. Merkityksellisyyden hakeminen on erityisen selvää nuorille sukupolville. Nuoret eivät usein käy töissä vain rahan takia, vaan työn tulee olla mielekästä ja siellä pitää olla erilaisia näkymiä. Nuorilla se ei välttämättä tarkoita, että näkymät ovat lineaarisia uralla ylöspäin meneviä. Koko työyhteisön tulee olla toimiva, jotta kokonaisuus toimii. Kyse ei kuitenkaan ole siitä, että töissä pitäisi aina olla kivaa, vaan kunkin tulevaisuuteen on olemassa visio ja näkymä. Ja siitä myös keskustellaan henkilökohtaisesti henkilöstön jäsenten kanssa. Jokaisella on halu kehittyä ja siksi arvostetaan sitä, jos osaamisen kehittymisessä autetaan eli keskustellaan avoimesti työnkuvan kehittymisestä ja mahdollisuudesta. On myös hyväksyttävä se, että työntekijän polku voi joskus johtaa toiseen organisaatioon. Toki tärkeää, että työntekijä itse avoimesti kertoo tarpeistaan saada muutosta tai kehittää osaamistaan. Nuoret myös näkevät työnantajan mahdollistaman koulutuksen ym. tärkeänä oman osaamisen kehittämisenä, kun taas vanhemmat voi joskus kokea sen työaikaa vievänä. Nykyisin on tärkeää, että johtaja osaa sanoittaa mihin suuntaan ollaan menossa eli jalkauttaa strategiaa. Toki strategian itse täytyy jo olla niin selkeä ja ymmärrettävä, että henkilöstökin pystyy sen omaksumaan. Strategian tehtävä on yksinkertaistaa kompleksista maailmaa ja näyttää suuntaa mihin ollaan menossa. Tällöin päätöksenteon perustelukin on helpompaa. Nuoret haluavat ehkä vanhempia enemmän myös merkityksellistä vapaa-aikaa. Korona-aika omalla tavallaan muuttanut työ- ja vapaa-ajan rajaa. Se on mahdollistanut myös monia hyviä muutoksia. Olennaista etäjohtamisessakin olla läsnä eli ottaa aikaa myös vapaamuotoiselle kuulumisten vaihtamiselle. Johtamisen on iästä riippumatta oltava yksilöllistä kuin aiemmin eli täytyy tutustua johdettaviin henkilöihin, jotta tietää millaista johtamista kukin tarvitsee. Ja ainoa keino varmasti on läsnäoleva keskustelu. Ihmiset myös muuttuvat eli tarvitsevat erilaista johtajuutta eri tilanteissa ja elämävaiheissa. Johtajan tuleekin aktiivisesti analysoida omaa tekemistään ja pyytää palautetta siihen. Johtamista on ennen kaikkea tulevaisuuden suunnan näyttäminen ja luottamuksen rakentaminen. Ennen ura nähtiin ulkoisesti mittavilla asioilla, nykyisin sitä määritellään enemmän sisäisesti. Uudet sukupolvet tuovat rohkeammin esille merkityksellisyyden tärkeyttä ja uskaltavat tehdä erilaisia ratkaisuja myös uran näkökulmasta. Tämä mahdollista myös siksi, että maailma on - ainakin tähän asti ollut - aivan eri tavalla auki. Nykyään ei enää tarvitse valita yhtä tiettyä uraa, vaan saatetaan lähteä aivan eri uralle ja vielä aika nopeastikin. Muutoksen ei tarvitse kuitenkaan olla aina radikaali. Omassa työssäkin voi muuttaa asioita. Myös johtaja voi tukea työntekijöiden tuntemaa työn merkityksellisyyttä monin eri tavoin ja sitä myös kannattaa tehdä, sillä merkityksellisyyden, positiivisen hyvinvoinnin ja tuottavuuden yhteys on osoitettu tutkimuksissa. Kuitenkin toki myös niin, että merkityksellisyyden ei tarvitse olla iso, valtava ja tai jonkun muun vastuulla oleva asia, vaan jokainen voi siihen vaikuttaa itse. Työn muokkaaminen merkityksellisyyden näkökulmasta on mahdollista vain sellaisille ihmisille, jotka uskovat, että itsellä on mahdollisuus vaikuttaa myös itse merkityksellisyyden kokemukseen. Tärkeää ottaa itse vastuuta ja olla aktiivinen, jotta saa lisää mielekkäitä työtehtäviä. Kun halutaan lisätä merkityksellisyyden kokemusta, on työn muokkaamisessa tunnistettavissa kolme olennaista teemaa: 1)muokataan työtehtäviä 2) muokataan ihmissuhteita 3)vaihdetaan näkökulmia Merkityksellisyys on esim. usein sitä parempi mitä useampia taitoja voi hyödyntää ja jos voi työn kautta vaikuttaa positiivisella tavalla muihin. Myös työtehtäviin vaikuttamisen mahdollisuus lisää merkityksellisyyttä. Myös muiden ihmisten auttaminen voi tuoda ison merkityksellisyyden tunteen työhön. Puhutaankin High Quality Connections – ihmissuhteista eli korkealaatuisista ihmissuhteista. Ne perustuvat luottamukseen ja arvostukseen ja sen kaltaiset suhteet antavat lisää energiaa ja elinvoimaa. Tällöin riittää jo lyhytkin tapaaminen. Tämän kaltaisia suhteita tarvitaan lisää työyhteisöön. Ihmiset, jotka ovat pidemmällä henkisessä kehityksessä, tunnistaa usein siitä, että heillä ei ole suoranaista pätemisen tarvetta, vaan he enemmänkin huomaavat muiden taidot ja osaamisen. Ja antavat tunnustusta. Tämä tärkeä johtajan ominaisuus. Arvostuksen kulttuurin olisi toki tärkeä olla aina kaksisuuntaista, jotta myös johtaja saa kiitosta ja arvostusta. Sen kautta hän jaksaa jatkaa työyhteisön hyvinvoinnin tukemista ja rakentamista. Tärkeä myös miettiä, että mikä tarkoitus milläkin ihmisellä on oman työn kannalta. Myös johtajan tärkeä pohtia omaa rooliaan suhteessa työntekijöihin. Samoin jokaisen työntekijän tärkeä miettiä myös omaa toimintaansa eli millaista ilmapiiriä itse kukanenkin luo ja tuo. On tärkeä tunnistaa missä on oman mielenkiinnon kohde. Osa pystyy tunnistamaan ja tuomaan esille tätä paremmin, mutta kaikki eivät. Ja siksikin johtajalta tarvitaan vuorovaikutusta ja alaisten tuntemista. Tärkeää tietää myös se, että mikä on työntekijän tavoite tulevaisuudessa ja vaikkapa ko. organisaatiossa. Etenkin jos työyhteisössä näkyy tyytymättömyyttä, niin on todella tärkeää käydä merkityksellisyyteen liittyvää keskustelua, koska tyytymättömyys usein liittyy juuri siihen, että ei tunne työtehtäviään merkitykselliseksi. Nuorin sukupolvi eli Z-sukupolvi ei välttämättä vielä näe työtehtäviään isommassa merkityksessä, vaan he usein tarkastelevat vielä omaa kehittymistä ja mihin itse haluaisi tulevaisuudessa kehittyä. Heille oli myös tärkeää, että työpaikassa on kavereita ja tuntee kuuluvansa työyhteisöön. Y-sukupolvella sen sijaan näkyy jo isompi merkitys eli se, että haluaa olla tarpeellinen muille ihmisille ja haluaa esim. olla mukana kestävässä kehityksessä. As someone who participated in the vetting process, I was somewhat concerned that there were no clear guidelines for vetting proposals. Going through that list I didn't even see my name the first time as I was so upset. There is impersonal and then there is just unprofessional. I mean, really, just a moment to get that letter, even a form letter, that says "Congradulations, your paper made it" is an achievement. I remember the first one I got, I still have it. 07:37:44  craignl ->  I wonder if the pressure of time caused a certain 'cutting of corners' - not to excuse what happened, but to explain 07:38:11  saradavila ->  Those presenters who were accepted for the first time this year lost out on that experience, and I for one, am rather offended that an organization and large as KOTESOL, with a conference fielding as many proposals as we have, would use this particular method. 07:38:43  saradavila ->  Being an experience EXCEL user it would take four minutes to set up two seperate lists for accepted and rejected proposals. 07:38:53  saradavila ->  experienced 07:40:07  craignl ->  This may lead on to a larger issue - for an international conference like ours, I've begun to think having a daedline for proposals being as close to the Conference date as it is, especially when compared to other conferences, is not a good thing.
