I took a month off and now I'm back with an amazing guest! Gabrielle Alvarez is one of the most inspiring makeup artists I know. Her work is instantly recognisable for her sheer love of colour and a passion for working with all skin tones. Gabi was my guest back in May 2021, so, as you can imagine, we had a lot to catch up on. In this episode Gabi and I discuss labels and trends – we touch on the whole Youthforia black pigment in a bottle controversy and she's also the first person to record my new segment: The Final Five. The Final Five is where I hand over the show to my guest as their opportunity to talk about anything they want, anything that's important to them or something that's on their mind. Gabi's chosen subject was AI in the beauty industry. Also, full disclosure, someone, meaning me, forgot to press record on both of my recording devices, so while Gabi sounds crystal clear you will notice I'm not as clear. So I do apologise for that. Be sure to go follow Gabi on Instagram @thegabriellealvarez and head to my insta to see some video clips of our conversation @beautymepodcast or over on TikTok @charissekenion. “I can't believe they said that” Instagram posts, marketing campaigns that pissed of A LOT of people, BS apologies, and more—that's what we're chatting about in today's episode of Unfiltered. In this super open convo about some recent marketing mishaps we've witnessed from brands like Copyhackers, Bumble, Youthforia, and more, we're discussing what these missteps show us consumers are fed up with, the best ways to handle public apologies, and some things we consider… pretty dang unforgivable. Grab a glass of milk because this one's extra spicy. Highlights: 3:00—17:19: The Copyhackers post that enraged the internet (and the surprisingly unpleasant way that Copyhackers handled all the angry IG comments) 17:19—35:50: What Bumble did right and what Bumble didn't get so right in their latest marketing campaign that also enraged the internet 35:50—45:20: The beauty company that had all of TikTok talking (and not in a good way) because of one product they recently put out 45:20—50:00: The importance of being honest when marketing products and a very popular beverage biz that recently found itself in hot water for not being so honest 50:00—59:39: Why Kelloggs' recent ad was giving off “let them eat cereal” vibes and what we can learn about the balance between hopping on current issues vs. being insensitive to people's current struggles We'd love to connect with you! Youthforia was launched by Fiona Co Chan in 2021. The idea for Youthforia came about right when COVID hit. Perhaps it was the inability to go out and see people, but Fiona kept coming back to this idea that the best part of wearing makeup is going out with your friends and sometimes that means forgetting to take your makeup off. She really wanted makeup that was good for your skin, so good you could sleep in it. During the development of Youthforia, Fiona slept in all of the lab samples (and recruited her husband to sleep in them too) and woke up with much better skin. It completely changed her beauty routine philosophy - makeup is an extension of skincare. And sleeping in lab samples is a huge part of the Youthforia testing process. Above all, we love caring for your skin - we truly believe that makeup should be good for your skin. She's also passionate about Green Chemistry and not using fossil fuels and it's a big pillar of the Youthforia formulation philosophy, because most makeup contains liquid microplastic and she just didn't want to do that. Fiona was recognized by Byrdie Eco Awards as a Eco Beauty Hero and a Disruptor. She likes making beautiful makeup that has a unique spin on existing categories while being friendly to the planet and being good for skin. Basically, the entire Youthforia brand is just a collection of things she finds interesting to work on and is all about inspiring fun and being with your friends. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/skincareanarchy/message

Youthforia - Makeup So Good For Your Skin, You Can Sleep in It

The Story of a Brand

This episode is brought to you by Sendlane.   Don't sleep with your makeup on. That's what you've been told. They say it will irritate your skin but if that's the case, why wear it at all? It took a brand named Youthforia to manufacture makeup so good for your skin that you can sleep with it on.   Fiona Chan, the founder of Youthforia, says she had sensitive skin growing up, and it was difficult to find makeup that didn't cause allergic reactions. Part of the problem was that she was sleeping in her makeup - something that's generally discouraged by skincare manufacturers.   "I just couldn't understand why we just kind of accept that as consumers," Fiona says. "I want makeup where if I wear it at any time of the day, I don't have to worry."   Part of the solution was creating products with better ingredients, she says. It turns out a lot of skin products are made of fossil fuels, while other products contain more plastic than the actual containers, she says.   "I kind of decided to reformulate everything that we had already developed to create things that are bio-based," Fiona says. "That was incredibly challenging because no one had been doing it. That skillset didn't exist."   The mission became to find a formulator who understood her vision.   "For me, it was just finding the right people that understood what I was trying to accomplish. People who believed it could be done and that we could make these skincare make-up hybrids and for me, putting my skin out there and testing it in a very rigorous way," she says.   Fiona didn't have a background in the skincare marketplace - she worked in enterprise software. But her career took her to some of the most polluted cities in the world - places where her makeup at the time wouldn't offer any protection.   Though the experience helped bring her vision for a new kind of skincare info focus, she also had to deal with skeptics who couldn't comprehend the shift in her career path.   "When you're deciding to become an entrepreneur, I think you'll always get that feedback," she says. "When people tell you that feedback, I'm sure it comes from a good place. They just want you not to fail or to do well. But I just didn't listen to any of it."   In Part 1, Fiona talks about:   * Gratitude to her husband for his support and help as the brand was born - even trying on the products as he slept. * How her sensitive skin sparked the idea for a sleep-friendly product line. * Why bio-based products are better than petrol-based products. * The challenge to find a formulator who understood her vision and requirements. * How her previous career created a path into the skincare marketplace. * Dealing with skeptics.   Join Ramon Vela and Fiona Chan as they break down the inside story on The Story of a Brand.   For more on Youthforia, visit: https://youthforia.co/    Subscribe and Listen to the podcast on all major apps. This episode is brought to you by Sendlane.   The journey of an entrepreneur should be personal and unique to the person with the vision, says Fiona Chan, founder of Youthforia, a brand that creates makeup products that are so good for your skin that you can sleep in it.   "When I look back to even the last 15 years of my life, I've never actually followed the path that I thought I was supposed to follow," Fiona says. "And that's always done well for me. So I always tell people to remember that their experiences are unique, and that's a strength, and no one can ever take that away from you."   One of Fiona and Youthforia's early challenges was the lack of a marketing plan.   "I think in the early days, the challenge is always brand awareness," she says. "It's very interesting spending a whole year in silence, just working on the brand. You launch it, and you're like, wow, nobody knows about it."   Organic social media turned out to be the brand's early plan - along with finding out how to create ads and content on Facebook and TikTok.   "I was definitely not a content creator," she says. "I was not ready for any of it. But now it's a bigger part of my day, something that I just do regularly and enjoy."   Customer feedback has been quite positive - particularly from those who struggled with other makeup brands.   "I have some customers telling me that it has completely just fixed their skin, which is incredible feedback," she says. "This is always something I've wanted to do, just like the idea that makeup can improve your skin."   Ultimately, it all comes down to the brand's tagline: "Life's messy, but your makeup isn't."   In Part 2, Fiona talks about:   * How confidence in her vision guided her journey. * What it was like launching with no marketing plan. * How she grew to become a social media content producer. * The value of educational content. * Feedback from customers. * A rundown of the brand's hero products. * A look at the ingredients involved. * The brand's ambassador program. * Where you can find the brand's products.   Join Ramon Vela and Fiona Chan as they break down the inside story on The Story of a Brand.   For more on Youthforia, visit: https://youthforia.co/    Subscribe and Listen to the podcast on all major apps. This week it's a new Meet the Founder episode, and if you don't already know, Meet the Founder always takes place first on Instagram Live. As such you will discover that the editing is minimal, but my guest's advice makes it all worth it. April 2021 wouldn't be the most obvious time to start a new beauty business, but for San Francisco born and bred Fiona Co Chan, it made total sense. With a background in tech, Fiona decided that she would use social media, particularly TikTok, to promote Youthforia, a brand that has become known as fun, colourful and innovative. And TikTok is the place that really got the beauty industry fired up about her hero product, BYO Blush Colour Changing Blush Oil, a blush that changes colour based on your individual skin pH. In this episode Fiona shares how she started out by doing everything herself, from looking at formulas and design to creating content, something she'd never done before. She also opens up about the challenges that came with building a brand and shares that the entire experience has been a real test of her resilience and has taught her about her own mental health journey. Be sure to check out Youthforia on Instagram @getyouthforia and tag me when you're listening on Instagram @beautymepodcast.
