During Reconstruction, cotton planters in the Mississippi Delta recruited Chinese laborers to work on their plantations, to replace the emancipated slaves who had previously done the hard labor. However, the Chinese workers quickly learned that they couldn't earn enough money picking cotton to send back to their families, and they turned instead to running small grocery stores, filling a niche in the market of the Deep South. At one point, the city of Greenville, Mississippi, had 40,000 residents and 50 Chinese-owned grocery stores. Although the numbers of Chinese Americans living in the Mississippi Delta region had dwindled now, their legacy remains. Joining me to help us learn about this history is filmmaker and musician Larissa Lam, director of the 2021 documentary Far East Deep South, which follows her husband's family as they search for their own lost family history in the Mississippi Delta. Our theme song is Frogs Legs Rag, composed by James Scott and performed by Kevin MacLeod, licensed under Creative Commons. Image Credit: “In the Mississippi Delta. On this episode of the Popzara Podcast our own transcontinental editor-at-large Evelyn "Ev" Wong talks with film-making couple Larissa Lam and Baldwin Chiu, the producing and directing team behind Far East Deep South, a new documentary about the surprises of discovering one's own heritage and what it truly means to be American.
Why is there a Chinese museum in the middle of Mississippi? That's the question Baldwin Chiu and Larissa Lam asked when they visited his grandfather's home in Mississippi—yes, Mississippi. It turns out there was a whole community of Chinese immigrants and Chinese Americans who made their home in the American South. The history they uncovered during their journeys turned into Far East Deep South, an award-winning documentary feature film that followed the Chiu family as they uncovered their lost family history. The film, directed by Larissa, interviews local residents, historians, and of course, Baldwin's own family. It also shows the racially complex history of the early Chinese in the segregated South, including the effects of the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882. In this interview with SOLA video manager Jason Chao, Baldwin and Larissa share how they discovered this amazing story, and how it has helped them to redefine what “American” and “American Christianity” means. They also challenge Asian Americans to ask questions of previous generations to learn their stories. Our “Artists in Motion” series hopes to platform Asian American Christian artists, as well as encourage all artists to root their identities in Christ and use their callings to share art and truth with the world. Larissa Lam believes God orchestrated her many unexpected career changes. How else would a Chinese American teen decide to be a music producer? Or become the lead singer of a band while CFO of a record company? And now, Larissa is the director of a documentary called Far East Deep South, an award-winning documentary feature film that follows a Chinese American family on a surprising journey through Mississippi in search of their lost family history. In this interview with SOLA video manager Jason Chao, Larissa shares about her faith journey, as well as her thoughts on Asian American representation in the music industry. She also shares how churches can support artists, especially musicians. All of it, of course, is tied to her belief in God as creator who is sovereign over all things. Our “Artists in Motion” series hopes to platform Asian American Christian artists, as well as encourage all artists to root their identities in Christ and use their callings to share art and truth with the world. How can we live history, right now, today? History comes to life when we can connect legislation, Supreme Court rulings, and major historic events to real people. When we understand the impact of historic events and decisions on people's lives, we gain the humility and empathy to dissolve barriers that prevent us from connecting with others and learning from past mistakes. In this episode, we sit down with filmmakers, podcasters, and content creators, Larissa Lam and Baldwin Chiu to learn about their film Far East Deep South and how their family journey opened up so many epiphanies about what it means to be an American.Feeling inspired? As America currently deals with a rash of anti-Asian sentiment, FAR EAST DEEP SOUTH is a deeply moving story that offers a poignant perspective on race relations, immigration and the deep roots of Chinese Americans in our national identity. The award-winning documentary follows Charles Chiu and his family (including his son, producer Baldwin Chiu, and daughter-in-law, director Larissa Lam) as they travel from California to Mississippi to find answers about Charles' father, K.C. Lou. A retired Air Force reservist, Charles was left behind in China as a baby and is reluctant to discuss his family's complicated past with his sons, Baldwin and Edwin. The family's emotional journey to a place they've never seen leads to stunning revelations and a crash course on the surprising history of Chinese immigrants in the segregated South. Through encounters with local residents who remember K.C., as well as interviews with historians, Congresswoman Judy Chu and others, the family's trip becomes a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for discovery and healing. FAR EAST DEEP SOUTH is based off the award-winning short film, Finding Cleveland. The film presents a very personal and unique perspective on immigration, race and American identity. Director Larissa Lam and producer Baldwin Chiu join us for a conversation on how a family trip and personal film project evolved into a revelatory story and sweeping historical overview of the immigrant Chinese experience and deeply moving family saga. Larissa Lam is an award-winning pop, dance and soul-influenced singer and songwriter. Her current single “I Feel Alive” won the 2015 Hollywood Music in Media Award and Akademia Music Award for Best Dance Song. She was named November 2015 Best Vocalist of the Month by SingerUniverse Magazine. This petite, Chinese-American woman defies stereotypes and expectations with her powerful and soulful voice. However, what makes Lam stand out is her range and ability to craft memorable melodies with lyrical depth and empowering themes. Lam can energize you with club anthems, show some sass with a jazzy twist or bare her soul with a tender ballad. Growing up in the United States, Larissa used to be ashamed of being Asian American. She wanted to be like her peers since she grew up in a predominantly Caucasian community. A story from the Bible helped Larissa realized to embrace her culture and now gets involved in Asian American issues to educate and bring awareness.
