Latest up from Spoken Label (Author Chat Podcast) features making his debut, Adrian Slatcher. Adrian Slatcher was born in Staffordshire in 1967. He studied English at Lancaster University, and creative writing at the University of Manchester. He has co-edited several literary magazines, and is a trustee of Castlefield Gallery, a contemporary art gallery in Manchester. His fiction has featured in a number of anthologies, including Best British Short Stories. He has published two poetry pamphlets: Extracts from Levona (2010) and Playing Solitaire for Money (2010). This Podcast primarily talks about his debut stories collection Loners. Loners is a collection of six stories by Adrian Slatcher, three of which are published for the first time. It also features images created by the artist Steven Heaton in response to the stories. The book is the second in a series of collaborations between writers and artists - the first, Interpolated Stories by David Rose and Leah Leaf, was published in 2022. The stories vary widely in form, from ‘Last Testament of a Lighthouse Keeper', ostensibly a written journal, to ‘sleeveless itchery and parched throat', an unpunctuated monologue. While all six stories are about ‘loners' in one way or another, it would be wrong to think of the characters as being without hope – in each case, their isolation is something they are trying to break out of, in search of redemption, often after some kind of trauma. The characters are loners out of either choice or circumstance, but it is never easy to be alone. The book can be purchased here - https://www.confingopublishing.uk/loners Adrian's website is https://adrianslatcher.wordpress.com/

In this special extended episode UNP founder and curator Grant Scott is in his shed talking with photographer Jonas Bendiksen about the future for photography, synthetic images, beginning projects, how to stay relevant, generic images, photographic confidence and the pressures of success. Born in 1977 in Tønsberg, southern Norway at aged 19, Jonas Bendiksen started a one-year internship at the Magnum Photos' London office. He made coffee and tea, ran to the post office, answered the phones and returned prints and slides to their correct places in the archive. He left Magnum and headed to for Russia to try to become a photographer and fell madly in love with the former USSR, spending several years there resulting in his first book, Satellites - Photographs from the Fringes of the former Soviet Union, which came out in 2006. He joined Magnum Photos in 2004. Fascinated by enclaves and people living in isolated communities Bendikson started another project in 2005 focused on the urban slum. His The Places We Live body of work became a three-year journey through four slum communities around the world, and in 2008 it became a book and exhibition featuring projections and voice recordings in a three-dimensional installation. In 2017 his book, The Last Testament, about people who claim to be the Second Coming of Christ was published. In 2021, his book The Book of Veles, departed from traditional photojournalism practice by creating a conceptual work about "fake news" which consisted of images that were "faked" using CGI to place humans and bears in scenes that Bendiksen had photographed devoid of life, mixed with excerpts from The Book of Veles (a forged ancient text), and AI-generated texts. The deception, initially not disclosed, escaped detection from his colleagues at Magnum and then curators and audiences at the Visa Pour l'Image festival, until Bendiksen revealed it on the Magnum Photos website. The work questioned the ability of the most visually literate people in the photography industry to tell real photos from faked ones. Some of Bendiksen's clients include GEO magazine, Newsweek, the Sunday Times Magazine, The Rockefeller Foundation, Goldman Sachs, and many others. Since 2004 he has worked with the National Geographic Magazine.Bendiksen has received awards from World Press Photo, International Center of Photography, National Magazine Awards and Pictures of the Year International. Bendiksen lives near Oslo, Norway with his wife and three children. www.jonasbendiksen.com *You can read more about Jonas's process of creating The Book of Veles here: www.magnumphotos.com/arts-culture/society-arts-culture/book-veles-jonas-bendiksen-hoodwinked-photography-industry/ Dr. Grant Scott is the founder/curator of United Nations of Photography, a Senior Lecturer and Subject Co-ordinator: Photography at Oxford Brookes University, Oxford, a working photographer, documentary filmmaker, BBC Radio contributor and the author of Professional Photography: The New Global Landscape Explained (Routledge 2014), The Essential Student Guide to Professional Photography (Routledge 2015), New Ways of Seeing: The Democratic Language of Photography (Routledge 2019). "Dan McCafferty Remembered" Okay, to be fair Dan McCafferty left the legendary Scottish band back in 2013 but worthy replacements aside, he will always be the voice of Nazareth. After 45 years fronting the internationally acclaimed outfit, McCafferty stepped aside due to health reasons. Recharged, revitalized and sounding better than ever, McCafferty roared back with The Last Testament, his third solo album--and first since 1987. In this conversation he chats with Alex about his collaboration with the Czech instrumentalist Karel Marik, why he's never planned anything in his life and why the easiest people to talk to are fishermen.
In 1977 NASA sent a time capsule out into the cosmos that has since left our solar system and is traveling at 61,500 km/h through the vastness of space. Being “shrewd” or “clever” may not be a characteristic that many seek to grow in. But that is what it means to be “prudent.” We can develop our ability to look ahead and understand where things lead. Contrarily, a person could be content just following their own ideas and desires, and in the end, be misled and deceived. The great deception begins with our own—to be deceived is to deceive. Excerpts from the text "The Golden Letters" translated by John Myrdhin Reynolds. The lineage of Dzogchen, unbroken to the present day, is traced from the dharmakaya Samantabhadra (‘Kuntuzangpo' in Tibetan) to the sambhogakaya, represented by the five buddha families and Vajrasattva, and then to the first human master Garab Dorje. It then passed to Mañjushrimitra. At the time of his parinirvana, Garab Dorje ascended into the sky and dissolved into rainbow light. At this, Mañjushrimitra cried out in despair and distress, and made a very beautiful plea: “What will become of us now that you are passing away? You are the light of the world…” Whereupon Garab Dorje was moved, and his hand reappeared, in which was a small golden casket, the size of a thumbnail, containing the teaching of Hitting the Essence in Three Words, which he let fall into the hand of Mañjushrimitra. As soon as he received it, his mind became the same as the wisdom mind of his master Garab Dorje.

As a follow up to Episode 7, she describes the 64 oz. limited edition Old Bay Seasoning Old Bay Hot Sauce that has arrived and she she can’t wait to add to basically everything. Kathleen then delightedly describes the newly released Fudge Brownie M&M’s, which Ron White has polished off on a recent stay at her home.Kathleen reads a Dolly Parton quote involving beauty and an amusement park. FANTASY FOOTBALL: Kathleen describes the Fantasy Football league that she’s participating in with a few friends, and the antics produced by a group of fun people who love football but have never managed a Fantasy team.CRACKER BARREL BREAKING NEWS: Kathleen is thrilled to hear that Cracker Barrel is adding beer, wine, and mimosas to their menu, including to-go mimosas in some locations. She describes Lewis Black’s extreme love for Cracker Barrel, which is the reason why Kathleen gave him a gift certificate for his birthday. She discloses that he’s probably the only person in NYC that has the store’s famous rocking chairs on his porch. JERRY FALWELL JR. UPDATE: Kathleen provides an update on the never-ending saga of Jerry Falwell Jr.’s drama, which most recently involves a 911 call from his wife after Fallwell Jr. took a severe fall while intoxicated. LINDA RONSTADT DOCUMENTARY: Kathleen has always been a big fan of Linda Ronstadt’s music, and is thrilled that a follow up to the 2019 Ronstadt documentary “The Sound of My Voice,” is being released. The new documentary “Linda and the Mockingbirds” documents the singer’s 2019 trip to Mexico with Bay Area performing arts group Los Cenzontles and Jackson Browne.Linda performing in South Africa, and in an interview with Australia’s Don Lane to promote her “What’s New” album where the host drills Ronstadt on her reasoning behind the controversial South African performance.SUPER PIGS: As a good midwestern person, Kathleen loves pork (specifically bacon or a thin St. Louis pork steak.) She’s fascinated to find out that there are approx. 9 million feral pigs across the US and Canada, and scientists are extremely concerned about the malignant growth of this population. Scientists are referring to the reproduction of these pigs as the “Pig Bomb,” and zoologist Dr. Jack Mayer is sounding the alarm that many states and Canadian provinces that these populations could take over and manipulate the ecosystems. Numbers are rapidly rising due to the fact that these feral pigs can reproduce at just three months old. WHAT TO WATCH THIS WEEK: Kathleen reviews “The Keepers” on Netflix and gives props to a few women who were students at the Catholic high school in Baltimore where the docuseries takes place where their most beloved nun and teacher is murdered. Kathleen talks about the nuns that she grew up with, and how she is thankful for the positive interactions that she had with them in grade school including a few incidents where Sister Barb caught Kathleen listening to St. Louis Cardinals games on her transistor radio while in Math class. She’s also working her way through “The Vow” docuseries on HBO Max. The nine-part series focuses on the cult/multilevel-marketing scheme NXIVM, which underneath its self-help veneer, was primarily a sex-trafficking ring for its leaders. Kathleen says that she would never be motivated to follow a cult that is based in Albany because of the intensely cold climate, and would also never follow a leader who couldn’t come up with a name better than “Keith.” Keith pitches Albany as “the new Rome” to potential followers, and although Kathleen always has fun in Albany she disagrees that it resembles Rome. To support her opinion, she tells the brief story of her trip to Rome and Paris with her mom, as was detailed on Comedy Central’s “This Is Not Happening.”Kathleen asks listeners to watch the documentary “My Octopus Teacher” on Netflix. She recently watched the film with her friend Ron White, who absolutely loved the message portrayed. The story captures a year that diver/filmmaker Craig Foster spent with a wild octopus, sharing experiences captured for the majority of the octopus’s life and how Foster transferred those to his relationship with his own son.RUSSIAN JESUS: Kathleen makes note of a developing story involving an ex-traffic cop in Siberia who proclaims that he’s Jesus. Sergei Torop, known to his followers as Vissarion the Teacher, or the Jesus of Siberia, has said he experienced an "awakening" when he lost his job in 1989 as the atheist Communist regime was fast unravelling. In 1991, he founded what is now the Church of the Last Testament in a Siberian forest. Followers of Vissarion adhere to a jumble of creeds that draw from Russian Orthodox rites and environmentally friendly values. Kathleen reads from a 2008 article interviewing Vissarion, and provides her colorful commentary regarding his visions and intentions. MYSTERY OF THE WEEK: Kathleen discusses Mexico’s creepiest tourist destination, the Island of the Dolls. Dolls of various styles and colors are found throughout the island, originally placed by the former owner of the island, Don Julian Santana Barrera. Julian believed that dolls helped to chase away the spirit of a girl drowned years ago. The island is still accessible to visitors who dare to travel to its haunted shores.

Ein Fritz Lang Film! And its a nightmarish psychological crime thriller that was banned by the Nazis no less! It’s also, strangely, a kind of sequel to two different and previously unrelated Lang films: Mabuse the Gambler (1922) and M (1931). In other words, this is a perfect place for us to start with this director. A world-weary police inspector begins to investigate a series of murders traced back to an enigmatic criminal mastermind pulling the strings of a vast organization of professional criminals. The only problem is that the kingpin in question is the near catatonic Dr. Mabuse who has been imprisoned in a psychiatric institution for the past decade. Can the conspiracy be uncovered before interwar German society is thrown into chaos?! If you’d like to watch ahead for next week’s film, we will be discussing and reviewing Masaki Kobayashi’s Kwaidan (1964).
Brandi starts us off with the ultimate mob boss, Al Capone. For years, Al Capone ran Chicago. He was the co-founder and boss of the Chicago Mafia, commonly known as the Chicago Outfit. During the Prohibition era, Capone made big money by operating illegal establishments. Anyone who threatened his businesses was promptly killed. Al did too many illegal things to list, but the most boring one is what took him down. He didn’t pay his taxes. Then Kristin tells us about Dutch Schultz. He may not be a household name today, but in his day, Dutch Schultz was very well known. He was violent, ruthless, and rich. He ran illegal lotteries, operated speakeasies and extorted restaurateurs. Oh yeah. And he didn’t pay taxes. Are we sensing a pattern? And now for a note about our process. For each episode, Kristin reads a bunch of articles, then spits them back out in her very limited vocabulary. Brandi copies and pastes from the best sources on the web. And sometimes Wikipedia. (No shade, Wikipedia. We love you.) We owe a huge debt of gratitude to the real experts who covered these cases. In this episode, Kristin pulled from: The book, “The Last Testament of Lucky Luciano: The Mafia Story in His own words” by Martin Gosch and Richard Hammer “Thomas E. Dewey Defeats Dutch Schultz,” historynet.com “Gangster Dutch Schultz died a millionaire, but where did all his money go?” by William DeLong for allthatsinteresting.com “Dutch Schultz,” wikipedia In this episode, Brandi pulled from: “Al Capone Trial (1931)” Famous-Trials.com (http://famous-trials.com) “Al Capone” by Marilyn Bardsley, Crime Library “Al Capone” FBI.gov (http://fbi.gov) “Al Capone”http://wikipedia.org

Quotes from the interview - "As a 73 year old guy, you don't get a lot chances at recording another album, but I'd like to make Last Testament 2 or 3." On his new solo album Last Testament, "I really did not want to make a cheapo version of Nazareth. That would have been appalling." On leaving Nazareth, "I said look boys I cannot do this anymore, but there's no reason for there to be no Naz. The boys sat down and everybody was upset. We're all close mates... It was very sad for me and I still miss the guys everyday." On dropping Roger Glover as Nazareth's producer, "He wanted to start formulating, but that's not Naz. Being in Deep Purple, he liked Deep Purple. It should be Deep Purple. You know what I mean... We wanted a change from Roger anyway."
