Bassist, singer and songwriter Richard “RW” Grigsby, has logged several lifetimes on the road, and his early rock and roll roots (Rome, GA near the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains) burst out like another famous Richard from Georgia on “Road Scholar,” his story of a musician who has spent too much time on the road, working for too little pay. It's sung by Red's Blues drummer Tim Wilbur, a pro's pro (2017 Sacramento Music Awards and Sacramento Blues Society Hall of Fame member), who brought creative percussion ideas -- maracas AND the entire group thigh-slapping percussion. “We sat in chairs in a circle and slapped our thighs at certain points in the song to add accent,” laughs Beth. “Jackknifed” (co-authored with fellow road warrior Mark Hummel) continues the road theme with bio notes from their Golden State-Lone Star Blues Revue adventures. RW played with Carlene Carter, Gary Primich, Mike Morgan & The Crawl, Finger Taylor, Mark Hummel's Golden State Lone Star Revue w/Anson Funderburgh & Little Charlie, JamesCotton & all the Harmonica Blowouts since 2008-2019( Magic, Lee Oskar, Kim Wilson, Billy Boy, Jason Ricci, Carey Bell, Lazy Lester, Estrin, John Primer, Duke, Billy Flynn, Elvin, Gravenities, Ron Thompson, Harman, Rod Piazza & many others) 2014 Grammy-nominated and Blues Music Award (BMA) winner bassist RW Grigsby has been playing since he was 14 years old and began his professional career when still a teenager.  He's toured the U.S., Canada and Europe since the '80s, and currently juggles playing with Red's Blues, Mark Hummel & the Blues Survivors and The Golden State/Lone Star Blues Revue. He played and recorded with Texas blues stars Gary Primich and Black Top Records' Mike Morgan and the Crawl in the 1990s.  RW is the bassist on the 2014 Grammy-nominated and BMA-winning CD, Remembering Little Walter. He was nominated for a BMA “Best Bassist” Award in 2017 and was inducted into the Sacramento Blues Society Hall of Fame in 2018.

Joined by drummer Tim Carman in 2019, GA-20 is a trio of 2 guitars, vocals and drums. Raw, passionate and honest performance, both on stage and in the studio, is the only goal. GA-20 released their debut album “Lonely Soul” Oct 18th 2019 on Karma Chief / Colemine Records. The album debuted at #2 on the Billboard blues charts. Stubbs has spent the past 11 years as guitarist for Blues legend Charlie Musselwhite. Ronni Boysen of Denmark is well known as one of the best European blues guitarists. Check out his eclectic and sophisticated approach in the musical clips he provided for this interview-- we think you'll agree that Ronni's playing is truly special. He discovered the blues at his high school library, stumbling on to a copy of Muddy Water's "Hard Again" It all came full circle as he's been backing one of Muddy Water's sons, Mud Morganfield, all over Europe since 2009. Strictly a sideman, one of Ronni's specialties is to back harmonica players; he's worked extensively with great harpmen including Lazy Lester, James Harmon, RJ Mischo, Paul Orta, Bob Corritore and Peter Nande. Since 2012, he's played with SE's The Kokomo Kings, a purist rock and roll outfit with a cult following on Rhythm Bomb records-- they were nominated for an Ameripolitan Award in 2018. During the pandemic Ronni formed an "exotica" band, Los Palmeras, which explores burlesque, Cuban r and b, and vintage instrumental styles. They'll have a recording out in the Fall of 2022. In June 2021 GA-20 announced the new album “GA-20 Does Hound Dog Taylor: Try It…You Might Like It!,” a 50th anniversary celebration of Hound Dog Taylor, to be released August 20 via Colemine Records in partnership with the legendary Alligator Records. Stubbs has spent the past 13 years as guitarist for Blues legend Charlie Musselwhite. During that time he has also backed up and toured with such Blues giants as John Hammond, James Cotton, Junior Watson and James Harman. Stubbs also leads his own original instrumental psych-rock band, 'The Antiguas.' Hound Dog Taylor as per Wiki “Hound Dog” Taylor was born with an abnormality: he had a sixth, very pinky finger on each hand. He grew up around Tchule and Greenwood in the Mississippi Delta, as did several other black blues musicians ( BB King , Albert King , John Lee Hooker , Muddy Waters , etc.). He made his first musical experiences playing the piano. He didn't really start playing the guitar until he was 21 years old. His musical style was strongly influenced by the then rising Elmore James . In his twenties he played in the Mississippi area, where he could be heard with Sonny Boy Williamson on the legendary radio show " King Biscuit Time ". But Taylor was expelled from Mississippi by the Ku Klux Klan in 1942 because he had a relationship with a white woman. He worked in Chicago as an electrician and other part-time jobs until the late 1950s. He also appeared as a guitarist in pompous night bars in southern Chicago. He was called “Hound Dog” because he was so fond of women and chased the steppe wolfish after them. During this time he changed his previously classic e-tuning to an energetic bottleneck style. In 1957 he finally devoted himself only to his music career. In 1960 he met the guitarist Brewer Phillips . The two became friends and formed the band The HouseRockers . With the first singles such as Baby Is Coming Home, Take Five and Christine , however, they met with little interest outside of Chicago. In 1965, drummer Ted Harvey joined the band. With him, the HouseRockers found their typically loud, hard blues accent with Taylor's rough voice and his slide play (bottleneck) on cheap Japanese guitars as well as Phillips' bass lines, which, played on a Fender Telecaster , replaced the missing bass. Bruce Iglauer , later Taylor's manager, got to hear the band for the first time in 1969 in Chicago's Eddie Shaw's. However, Iglauer's boss did not want to sign a record deal with Taylor. With its own financial support, Iglauer made it possible in 1971 to release Taylor's first record on the Alligator Records label . Without knowing it, he founded the now world-famous blues label. The album was a success with 9,000 records sold. The singles Give Me Back My Wig and It's Alright became the most famous songs. In 1973 the second record Natural Boogie came out on the market. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/somethingcame-from-baltim/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/somethingcame-from-baltim/support

It is an honor and privilege to have today’s guest on My Top Five Records podcast.  Mike Flanigin is in my humble opinion the best B3 player around.  He playing consistently at CBoys with Jimmie Vaughn, at least when that Covid dude isn’t wreaking havoc on us.  Come on Covid.  Can’t you leave us alone?   So yeah, he plays with Jimmie.  He is also buds with Billy Gibbons and has performed with ZZ Top, Steve Miller, Eric Clapton, Robert Plant, Willie Nelson, Charlie Sexton, Doyle 2 and Bonnie Raitt to name a few.  I actually opened up for him once at our mutual friend, Tom Amiss’, annual party   One of my favorite stories is how he used to tour as a guitarist with a LA band and returned to Austin to join the Antone’s Nightclub house band.  That’s when he decided to change instruments and start playing the B3.  He hooked up with organ legend Big John Patton to learn the craft.  And guess what, Big John has a record in Mike’s top five.   In 2015 he released his debut record called The Drifter.  Rolling Stone said, “The Drifter is a road trip-worthy record that veers from punk rock to desert pop to Bible Belt Blues, it’s disparate parts glued together with the swirl and swoon of B3 organ.  This is day-driving mood music, with Flanigin creating his own version of atmospheric Americana.”    And just this year, he dropped a brand new record called West Texas Blues and born out of his and Sue Foley’s Texas Blues Party that they streamed live on Facebook.  They went into the studio as a three piece.  Just Sue, Mike and Chris “Whipper” Layton of Double Trouble.    I quote Flanigin saying about the record, “As much as I labored over The Drifter album, which took me three years to make, and I had a lot of different types of genres, and people, and guests, this was the exact opposite.” Flanigin said. “This was ‘Let’s go in and let’s do what we do,’ and we play the blues. That’s what we’ve been doing our whole lives.”   I was driving back from Houston yesterday and thought I would put it on.  Well I did and I could not turn it off for the entire ride home.  If you like the blues, you’ve got to check it out.  An All Star cast of blues legends kicking out an homage to some Texas Blues music.   So PLEASE people go out there and support music.  Support the artists that make you groove.  Allow those who create to keep creating.  Get out there or go online and buy Mike Flanigin’s new record.  While you’re at it, I’d recommend you pick up The Drifter as well.   We talked about how he knew Lazy Lester and how Texas music is for dancers.  We talked about how Billy Gibbons plays on 7 strings and how that shows in his touch AND how he knows professional card tricks.  It was like a history lesson.    We had a slight technical difficulty and about 10 mintues got cut from our conversation.  It was primarily about Billy Gibbons.  We talked about Dusty has motorboat fingers and that is what makes ZZ Top ultimately unique.  He also talks about how he likes to record live in the studio and how he started singing again because Jimmie Vaughn pretty much made him when they were on tour.    What also got cut was where you can find him online.  You spell Mike’s last name F L A N I G I N.  As he says, with two N’s and two I’s   http://www.mikeflanigin.com/ https://www.facebook.com/mikeflaniginofficial/ https://www.instagram.com/mikeflanigin/   If you’ve got the gumption, head over to THE BIG GUN SHOW DOT COM and check out what my band is up to these days.  You can also catch us on Facebook, Instagram and YouTube with a handle of thebiggunshowband.  Go to our website and sign up for our email newsletter so that you can get updates about our coming record called Honky Rock.   www.thebiggunshow.com www.facebook.com/thebiggunshowband www.instagram.com/thebiggunshowband www.youtube.com/thebiggunshowband

Records on the Reb Rebel label were recorded by Jay D. Miller (also appearing on the label as the songwriter J. West), the influential Louisiana songwriter, studio operator, and record executive. Miller's biggest success as a songwriter was Kitty Well's breakthrough hit "It Wasn't God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels". It was the answer he wrote to Hank Thompson's "Wild Side of Life". He was also Excello Record's biggest and best source of material. He stamped the label with a signature sound and style that has become Excello's best legacy. In the 1950s and '60s, Jay D. Miller recorded some of the finest downhome blues, R&B, rockabilly and swamp pop from it's stable of artists: Slim Harpo, Arthur Gunter, The Gladiolas, Lonesome Sundown, Al Ferrier, Guitar Gable, Johnny Jano, The Marigolds, Rudy Green, The Blues Rockers, Lazy Lester, Lightnin' Slim, Silas Hogan and many, many more.   Artiest: Bobby Charles - Alligator StompAlbum: Bayou BeatLabel: Flyright (lp 581) Artiest: Lonesome Sundown - I'm Gonna Stick To You BabyAlbum: Bought Me A TicketLabel: Flyright (lp 529) Artiest: Ramblin' Hi Harris - I Haven't Got A HomeAlbum: I Ain't Got No MoneyLabel: Flyright (lp 620) Artiest: Wonder Boy Travis - Imitation Of LoveAlbum: Rock Me All Night LongLabel: Flyright (lp 606) Artiest: Whispering Smith - Baby Left Me This MorningAlbum: Rooster Crowed For DayLabel: Flyright (lp 518) Artiest: Leroy Washinton - Women Are TroubleAlbum: Wild CherryLabel: Flyright (lp 574) Artiest: Blue Charlie - Don't Have No FriendsAlbum: Rooster Crowed For DayLabel: Flyright (lp 518) Artiest: Sylvester Buckley - Mumblin' BluesAlbum: Gonna Head For HomeLabel: Flyright (lp 517) Artiest: Silas Hogan- Born In TexasAlbum: I'm A Free Hearted ManLabel: Flyright (lp 595) Artiest: Clarence Garlow - Foggy BluesAlbum: Rooster Crowed For DayLabel: Flyright (lp 518) Artiest: Lightning Slim - Mean Old TrainAlbum: The Feature Sides 1954Label: Flyright (lp 583) Artiest: Jimmy Anderson - I Wanna BoogieAlbum: Jambalaya On The Bayou Vol. 2Label: Flyright (lp 3503) Artiest: Buddy Guy - I Hope You Come Back HomeAlbum: I Ain't Got No MoneyLabel: Flyright (lp 620) Artiest: Mr. Calhoun - Hello Friends,Hello PalsAlbum: Gonna Head For HomeLabel: Flyright (lp 517) Artiest: Katie Webster & Ashton Savoy - I Want You To Love MeAlbum: Whooee Sweet DaddyLabel: Flyright (lp 530) Artiest: Slim Harpo - Harpo's BluesAlbum: Shake Your HipsLabel: Flyright (lp 593) Artiest: Sonny Boy Williamson - Take Your Hand Out Of My PocketAlbum: King Cobras Chicago Kings Of The HarmonicaLabel: Flyright (lp 567) Artiest: Otis Rush - It Takes TimeAlbum: Groaning The BluesLabel: Flyright (lp 560) Artiest: Lonesome Sundown - Learn To Treat Me BetterAlbum: If Anybody AsksLabel: Flyright (lp 617)

Welcome to the second leg of my Blues Heritage Tour. I'm on a road trip in a beautiful red 1966 Ford Mustang working my north from New Orleans up Highway 61 - the blues highway - to Chicago. I'm in Baton Rouge, Louisiana - home of the 'swamp blues'. Famous for harmonica stars Slim Harpo and Lazy Lester, and the guitarist Lightning Slim. It's also the home of 'zydeco', a strange mix blend of French Cajun music, blues, and rock n roll. Accordion player Clifton Chenier kick started this off in 1955. I'm not here for the zydeco though. I've come to Baton Rouge to meet Larry Garner, a blues singer and guitarist. He was the first blues artist I ever saw playing live. He played at Woodford Community Centre, Stockport, backed up by the Norman Beaker Band.
