Over a year and a half into the Covid-19 Pandemic, we find ourselves in a very different place than we did back in 2020. If you're fortunate to be in the developed world, chances are you have access to vaccines and promising therapeutics are right around the corner. But does this new reality translate to a new roadmap as far as public health policy is concerned? How is the world handling the realities of its ‘new normal' as we enter the latter half of 2021? On this episode of the podcast, we sat down with the two people we most wanted to talk with to try to answer our and YOUR most burning questions about the state of the pandemic today, Dr. David Manheim (episode 6) and Dr. Rami Shanani. Dr. David Manheim is currently a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Haifa's Health and Risk Communication Research Center, as well as working with universities and NGOs in the UK and US. His recent work has focused on modeling test and trace programs for the UK, and policy options for COVID-19 in the US and internationally. Long before the pandemic, David was working on understanding and mitigating global catastrophic biological risks including work on bioweapons, natural pandemics, and other disasters with groups at the University of Oxford such as the Future of Humanity Institute and for various nonprofits and NGOs in the United States. He has a Ph.D. in public policy and decision theory at the RAND Corporation and has done work that ranged from informing policy decision making for infectious diseases to modeling risks from earthquakes, hurricanes, and terrorism, and from flood insurance and resiliency building in the wake of catastrophes, to how bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies affect counter-terrorism finance. Dr. Rami Shanani is an Israeli physician. Born and raised in Jerusalem, Rami attended Hebrew University medical school and has worked for decades as a family doctor in Israel's public health system and has served in various management roles. He is a major in the IDF reserves, where he continues to serve as a commander of a medical unit involved with national preparedness for pandemics and other emergency situations, and is active in civic and communal leadership roles. Ever feel anxious or depressed, or know someone who does? Today I’m speaking with Dr. David Burns. He is a pioneer in the development of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), the most widely used and researched form of therapy in the world. He received his medical degree from Stanford and continues to teach at the Stanford School of Medicine. His book, Feeling Good, brought CBT to the mainstream in the 1980’s, has sold millions of copies, and is the book most frequently prescribed to depressed patients by psychologists. His new book, Feeling Great, builds upon the first one and gives people suffering from mood disorders like Depression and Anxiety the tools to potentially cure themselves faster than ever. I continue to see references to CBT everywhere these days, so it was a total pleasure to have such a legend on the show.In this interview he shared the 3 core principles of CBT, why half of people secretly resist making progress in therapy, the hidden benefits of negative emotions, a simple trick you can use right away to stop beating yourself up, and much more....I’d love to hear from you! Let me know what you like about the podcast, what you would change, ideas for future guests, etc:Email: kevin@truthjunkiepodcast.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/truthjunkiepodcastYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCIma3aXx3l6UfjvTNM2Bg2A...LINKS:David’s Website FeelingGood.com...TIME STAMPS[12:44] - How does psychotherapy really work and why is it that some people don't respond?[15] - Without over-generalization, depression is impossible.[17:53] - Talking about solutions to anxiety, depression, sorrow, and ways to deal with social problems.[22] - The Double Standard Technique - talking to yourself in the same way you’d talk to a dear friend[22:30] - Personal thoughts on how teenagers get depressed and feel low by little things like breakups, rude behavior of seniors, and the level of comparing themselves with celebrities.[29] - Almost everyone can recover quickly from depression with Dr. Burns’ approach to CBT[30] - Dr. Burns is strongly against positive thinking. If you had the chance to slow down the aging process, would you take it? This sci-fi concept may sound like something from a Star Trek episode. But with new research coming to light, anti-aging fiction could very soon be a reality. Maybe it’s all in the genes. WELCOME TO THE DARIN OLIEN SHOW. On this podcast, you’ll hear me, Darin Olien, “the superfood hunter,” have honest conversations with the extraordinary people that inspire me. I hope that through their knowledge and unique perspectives, they’ll inspire you, too. Although our ideas and approaches to life may differ, our ultimate goal is the same- to save the planet one conversation at a time. So, if you’re interested in expanding your view of the world by learning new perspectives on health, nutrition, and healing the planet, this podcast is for you. Dr. David Sinclair is trying to put a stopper in the aging process. In fact, he’s the one leading the charge. David is the Australian-born Harvard Medical School professor of genetics. He’s also co-director of the Paul F. Glenn Center for the Biology of Aging Research at Harvard Medical School. On top of all that, he’s also a Professor and Head of the Aging Labs at UNSW, Sydney, and an honorary Professor at the University of Sydney. Like many pioneering scientists, he hasn’t been immune to controversy. But, if you Google his name, you’ll see a laundry list of accolades. Especially within the area he’s best known for is, which are genes and small molecules that delay aging. He is currently spearheading the research into gene function in the aging process, with a really heavy focus on the Sirtuin genes. Dr. Sinclair and his team are also trying to lift the lid on exactly what roles resveratrol and NAD precursors play in the anti-aging process. Alongside this, David has published over a whopping 170 scientific papers, is a co-inventor on over 50 patents, and co-founded multiple biotech companies in the areas of aging and biodefense. Oh yeah, and he’s the author of Lifespan: Why We Age and Why We Don’t Have To, which shot him to number 11 on the New York Times bestseller list in just over a week. One of David’s most recent claims to fame was his selection to be one of Time Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People In The World. Now that is impressive. In this conversation, Dr. Sinclair and I get right into the fantastic family of proteins known as Sirtuins and their role in the aging process. We also look at how Intermittent Fasting could turn back the clock. We get into how it all started with yeast cells, and why David is so interested in the NMN molecule. Other great topics we cover: The role Sirtuin genes play and why they’re so bossy Epigenetics and why biological stress isn’t such a bad thing Intermittent fasting and what skipping a meal can do for your body What is Resveratrol and how does it affect the body? Why the NAD molecule is so vital for every living organism The Zombie cells that wreak havoc on your health What David is so excited about for the future of anti-aging science Epigenetic reprogramming and reversing the ticking clock inside us all David’s take on stem cells and how they contribute to the aging process When you should really start taking care of your body Links: David on Facebook David on Twitter David on Instagram – @davidsinclairphd David Sinclair Lab – Harvard Medical School Lifespan Website - Be sure to sign up for Dr. Sinclair’s Newsletter! It's Scorpio season, and the gang is back, albeit perhaps a bit hungover from a late night celebrating the birthdays of David and Chris. We get into the Bolivian crisis - a brutal military coup - the lithium mine interests, the manufacturing of a liberal legitimacy consensus through mainstream media and twitter bots, and the need to abolish the CIA for any hope of international socialist solidarity. We then talk about how the US Navy Seals are being warned not to report war crimes, the class division in the military, drone tech, and the effect of distance on the ability to do violence. Our wildflower is a vaccine that can render cats hypo-allergenic, and the delightful story of how Chris catnapped his kitty Marla armed with frozen taquitos and a laundry basket.Links: David's article on Bolivian tweets: (https://thesocietypages.org/cyborgology/2019/11/12/here-are-all-the-examples-of-bolivia/) Officer Adrian Schoolcraft's struggle to resist the NYPD quota system: (https://www.thisamericanlife.org/414/right-to-remain-silent)Seals warned against reporting war crimes: (https://www.nytimes.com/2019/04/23/us/navy-seals-crimes-of-war.html)Hypo-Allergenic Cat Vaccine: (https://gizmodo.com/scientists-have-created-a-vaccine-for-cat-allergies-bu-1837242570)Episode art is apparently a legit challenge coin for Florida cops. San Diego Comic Con is a great place to meet and talk to comic artists and writers from all over the world. This year, Adam had the opportunity to talk to creators from Fanbase Press for Making Comics Gutter Talk episodes. In this week's episode, two of them, David Accampo and Amanda Donahue join Adam on the back terrace of the San Diego Convention Center, out where you can hear everything from the medieval knights battling it out to the military helicopters flying by to the seagulls on the bay behind us. The conversation began with a discussion on their latest collaboration, The Margins, and what it meant to them as creators. After their history was dredged up, but in a good way, the talk turned to the comic creating process, from the David's writing to Amanda's first foray into the world of comics. If you enjoy these podcasts and want to hear more of them, please visit our Patreon page and help us make that happen. We at Making Comics would very much like to get back to our roots and put out podcast content on a regular, weekly basis. But in order to do that, we need your help. Well, it's been in the news quite frequently lately. The new Sherlock Holmes movie has brought new life to the literary franchise we all know and love. But Holmesians have a number of questions: how is it? Does Robert Downey, Jr. make a decent Holmes? Is the "bromance" just a little too much for the purists? Will those raised on Rathbone be able to stand the latest reincarnation? To help us answer these questions and perhaps raise a few more, Scott and Burt are joined in this episode by Sherlockian film critic David F. Morrill, BSI ("Count Von Kramm"), a man who owns as many as 10,000 movies - some of which are actually worth watching. David helps us discern what makes a good cinematic Holmes, shares his picks of the best film editions of , and shares his opinion on how Downey stacks up while dressing down.
