Read our book, The Score That Matters https://amzn.to/44qxsph The Learning Leader Show With Ryan Hawk Full show notes at www.LearningLeader.com Notes on this conversation with Cal Newport (Obsess over quality). Jewel obsessed over the quality of her work so much that she turned down a 1m dollar offer (even while living out of her car) because she needed time to make her work excellent. Obsess over the quality of what you produce, even if this means missing opportunities in the short term. Leverage the value of these results to gain more and more freedom in your efforts over the long term. Benjamin Franklin – He hired David Hall to create time freedom. He needed time to think, time to experiment. He gave up money in the short term to gain time freedom to create something for the future. There's no guarantee that it would pay off, but we all should think about how we can make investments that our future self would thank us for. Have fewer concurrent active projects. Instead of focusing on 10 things, focus on 2 or 3. Make it public. Share with your team. Be known as a leader who focuses on a few important objectives instead of 10 of them. Match your space to your work – Be in nature, Lin-Manuel Miranda wrote Hamilton in the Morris-Jumel Mansion, the oldest surviving house in Manhattan (served as headquarters for George Washington during the Battle of Harlem Heights, and home of Aaron Burr when he was Vice President), Neil Gaiman built a spartan, 8 sided writing shed that sits on low stilts and offers views on all sides of endless trees. Do Fewer Things: Limit Daily Goals – Cal learned this from his doctoral adviser at MIT. She was incredulous about Cal's attempts to switch back and forth between multiple academic papers. She preferred to get lost in a single project at a time. Cal was convinced that the slowness of working on just one important thing per day would hold him back. Work at a Natural Pace Don't rush your most important work. Allow it instead to unfold along a sustainable timeline, with variations in intensity over different timescales, and, when possible, executed in settings conducive to brilliance. Slow productivity emphatically rejects the performative rewards of unwavering urgency. Grand achievement is built on the steady accumulation of modest results over time, and you should give your efforts the breathing room and respect required to make them part of a life well lived, not an obstacle to it. Obsess over Quality By focusing intensely on the small number of activities that matter most to our jobs, you can find both the motivation and justification for slowness. Improve your taste. It's in the uneasy distance between our taste and our ability that improvement happens – aka in our drive to meet our own high standards. To combat the potential paralysis of perfectionism, think about giving yourself enough time to produce something great, but not unlimited time–focus on creating something good enough to catch the attention of people whose taste you care about but relieve yourself of the need to forge a masterpiece. Gather with people who share similar professional ambitions. When you combine the opinions of multiple practitioners, more possibilities and nuance emerge, and there's a focusing effect that comes from performing for a crowd. It's easy to mistake “do fewer things” for “accomplish fewer things” – but this understanding is backward. We work roughly the same number of hours each week regardless of the size of our task lists. Having more commitments simply increases the hours lost to overhead tax – the coordinating activities, such as meetings and email, needed to manage what's on your plate. The pandemic “zoom apocalypse,” in which many knowledge workers found themselves in Zoom meeting all day long, was caused in part by reaching a state in which overhead tax crowded out almost any time to actually complete tasks. Doing fewer things, in other words, makes us better at our jobs–not only psychologically but also economically and creatively. The Overhead Tax – A key property of overhead tax is that it tends to expand to fill as much time as it's provided. So long as a project is something that you've committed to, and it's not yet complete, it will tend to generate a continual tax in the form of check-in meetings, impromptu email conversations, and plain old mental space. Knowledge workers have no agreed-upon definition of what “productivity” actually means–incredibly unusual compared to other areas of our economy. Lacking a precise definition they defaulted to a crude approximation: pseudo-productivity – using visible activity as a proxy for useful professional accomplishment. Cal argues that the current burnout crisis is due, in part, to the combination of pseudo-productivity with more recent advances in mobile computing and digital communication that made unlimited work available at all times in all places. The result was an impossible internal tug of war, where there was always more to do, and never any hope of catching up. Busy exhaustion itself became your primary signal of usefulness. Slow productivity doesn't ask that you extinguish ambition. Humans derive great satisfaction from being good at what they do and producing useful things. Cal revisits the popular narrative of Jane Austen's writing career; a closer look at her life reveals a powerful case study for a slower approach. Busy Jane Austen was neither happy nor producing memorable work, while unburdened Jane Austen, writing contently at a quiet cottage, after her family decided to withdraw from a busy social calendar, transformed English literature. The goal of Slow Productivity is to propose an entirely new way for you, your small business, or your large employer to think about what it means to get things done; to rescue knowledge work from its increasingly untenable freneticism, and rebuild it to enable you to create things you're proud of without grinding yourself down along the way; and to offer a more humane and sustainable way to integrate professional efforts into a life well lived.
#579: Mastering Daily Goals: The Art of Strategic Planning and Personal Touch in Real Estate Welcome back, everyone! Today, I'm thrilled to dive deep into our Daily Success Planning Plan, a structured framework crafted to turbocharge your productivity and elevate your real estate business to new heights. Let's unpack how this plan promotes consistency and intentionality, transforming everyday actions into long-term business triumphs. Folks, the core of today's discussion is about setting crystal clear, actionable daily goals. We're not just wandering aimlessly here; we're executing a strategic planning that includes training, engaging through social media, and personal touches like handwritten notes to deepen client relationships. Each day, agents are expected to hit three major goals: an hour of training to sharpen your skills, direct messaging to foster connections, and strategic social media interactions that align with our sophisticated point-based system for tracking your every move towards progress. Here's the kicker: personalization isn't just a buzzword; it's your secret weapon. By incorporating handwritten notes into your routine, you stand out as an agent who values authenticity and genuine connections. Imagine the impact of a personal note in today's digital world—it's powerful! Additionally, posting thrice a day on social media isn't about spamming; it's about planning and optimizing each post to work the algorithm to your favor, ensuring your content reaches its full potential and resonates deeply with your audience. Now, understanding your ideal client is critical. This isn't just about throwing content out there; it's about crafting messages that hit home with the people you aim to serve. This level of strategic communication fosters strong connections that don't just end at a transaction but blossom into long-lasting relationships. By consistently applying these principles, you build a robust network of trust and reliability, essential for substantial business growth in any market condition. But here's what sets us apart—the Daily Success Plan isn't about overwhelming yourself with tasks. It's about breaking your objectives into bite-sized, manageable actions that align perfectly with your long-term goals. This method ensures that every single day, you are making measurable progress towards not only meeting but exceeding your targets. From the moment you start your day, you're earning points for every task completed, pushing you closer to your ultimate business objectives. Each day involves three precise social media posts to keep you top of mind; personal, real estate-related, and based on hobbies or interests. Five direct messages and fifteen comments to engage actively with your network. One handwritten note to make someone's day and remind them of the human touch in real estate. Agents, by embracing this plan, you commit to a discipline that molds not just your business practices but also your mindset. You transition from being reactive in this fast-paced market to being a proactive leader who knows how to leverage every tool at your disposal for maximum impact. In conclusion, the Daily Success Plan is more than just a to-do list; it's a comprehensive strategy for real estate excellence. By aligning daily tasks with strategic goals, agents can create a rhythm of success that not only drives results but also builds a formidable reputation in the industry. Remember, the path to greatness is built on the foundation of disciplined consistency and authentic engagement. Thanks for tuning in, folks! I hope you're as excited as I am to implement these strategies and watch your business soar. Dive into the plan, make those connections, and let's fast-track our way to real estate success together. Don't forget, if you need a clearer path or a little boost along the way, hit up to book a call with me—let's strategize your rise to the top! WHAT CAN HELP YOU? #578: Fast Track to Real Estate Success: Mastering Daily Goals with Structured Precision Today, we're diving into the game-changing Fast Track program, specifically designed to skyrocket the productivity and lead generation capabilities of real estate professionals. If you're ready to ramp up your game with disciplined strategies that focus on tangible, daily actions rather than just the end game, you're in the right place. This program is your key to success, tailored to help you not only meet but exceed your professional objectives. The Fast Track program is our answer to the overwhelming chaos many agents face daily. Inspired by the 90-day success plan pioneered by Arbonne, this program is all about setting you up with repeatable, structured processes that inject clarity into your bustling workday. We're talking about a point-based system that breaks down your mammoth tasks into achievable daily goals, making your pathway to success as clear as a sunny day. Let's break it down: This isn't about throwing everything at the wall and seeing what sticks. It's about smart, consistent daily efforts that build over time. We start with the basics—your Sphere of Influence (SOI) list. This isn't just any list; it's your goldmine. Nurturing these relationships through consistent, thoughtful contact strategies like our 'Hot Lists' and 'Top 50' lists ensures you're never losing touch and always closing the loop on potential leads. But how do we keep you on track? Through our robust point system, every call, every follow-up, and every client interaction earns you points towards your daily target. This isn't about being busy; it's about being productive. We distinguish between mere busyness and genuine productivity, ensuring that every action you take is a step towards tangible outcomes—more listings, more closings, and ultimately, more success. Our focus today also extends to the art of strategic relationship management. By applying personalized reminders and structured follow-ups, you'll transform sporadic interactions into consistent touchpoints that not only keep your clients engaged but also deepen their trust in you as their go-to realtor. This systematic approach guarantees that your pipeline of opportunities is not just filled but flowing efficiently. Transitioning into the heart of today's discussion, we highlight the power of authenticity and consistency in all communications. It's about making your marketing resonate not as a distant echo but as a clear, inviting voice in a crowded room. Your messaging isn't just heard; it's felt. This level of strategic communication fosters deeper connections and paves the way for community building within the industry, which is crucial for long-term success. In our workshop segments, we delve into practical tactics like 'Lead Flow Fridays' where you dedicate time to refining your lead management processes, and 'Circle Prospecting Plans' that strategically expand your influence within your community. These aren't just activities; they are your stepping stones to building a sustainable, flourishing real estate career. As we wrap up today's session, we zoom out to look at the big picture—setting achievable daily targets that cumulatively build towards your annual goals. This methodical approach not only simplifies what seems like an insurmountable challenge but also instills a habit of success. Daily goal setting turns the abstract into the tangible, making your pathway to success a daily walk in the park. Remember, the essence of the Fast Track program is to transform you from being reactively busy to proactively productive. It's about owning your day, every day, with the precision of a well-oiled machine. This is how we build leaders in the real estate industry, and this is how you can redefine your professional journey. So, if you're looking to elevate your real estate game, to turn those sporadic successes into a steady stream of achievements, then the Fast Track program is your ladder to the stars. Book a call today, join our community, and let's make those dreams a daily reality. Thank you for tuning in, keep pushing those boundaries, and as always, make it happen! WHAT CAN HELP YOU? We have created a brand new training, "7Figure Blueprint" that shows how to grow to 7 figures without the chaos and overwork. The Michael Yardney Podcast | Property Investment, Success & Money
Have you ever wondered why the rich keep getting richer and how you can join the ranks of the wealthy and successful? There's been a lot of research into this question, including by my good friend and guest today Tom Corley who spent 5 years studying the rich, which he then documented in his first book, Rich Habits Poor Habits. Today we're going to talk about why the 1% comma control over 80% of the wealth in the world, and you may well be surprised that if you're listening to this show, you fall into that 1%. Why the 1% control over 80% of the wealth The topic for today's show was inspired by an article I recently read article complaining about the rich. The author was upset at the fact that 1% controlled 82% of the wealth in the world. Now there's no doubt the rich are getting a lot richer and doing so a lot faster, and of course, this has been fodder for some sensational headlines and a lot of commentaries. Let me be clear…No one's hardship should be belittled. Becoming unemployed or not being able to keep up with your mortgage payments aren't just financial problems. They're social and emotional problems that strike at your sense of worth. But things always need to be kept in perspective. Some really interesting numbers emerge when you expand your view and look at the richest 1% in the entire world. So, how do the 1% cultivate wealth? That's what I'm going to discuss today with my good friend Tom Corley who is my co-author of our internationally best-selling book Rich Habits Poor Habits. Tom is a CPA, and CFP and heads one of the top financial firms in New Jersey. For 5 years, Tom observed and documented the daily activities of wealthy people and people living in poverty, and in his research, he identified over 200 daily activities that separated the “haves” from the “have nots,” which culminated in his #1 bestselling book, Rich Habits, Poor Habits. So what do the rich do differently? Habits. The top 1% cultivate wealth by doing certain things: Read to Learn Every Day — 88% of the rich in my Rich Habits Study read 30 minutes or more every day to learn. Deliberate Practice — 69% of the rich in my study practiced some specific skill for two or more hours every day. Pursue Long-Term Goals or a Dream — 70% of the rich in my study pursued some long-term goal or some dream. Focus on Daily Goals — 62% of the rich in my study focused on their daily goals. Save — 94% of the rich in my study saved 20% or more of their income every year. Be Frugal with Your Money — 67% of the rich in my study were frugal with their money. Forge Rich Relationships — 68% of the rich in my study forged relationships with other upbeat, success-minded people. Volunteer — 72% of the rich in my study volunteered 5 hours or more a month. 5 AM Club — 44% of the rich in my study woke up 3 or more hours before they began their workday to pursue dreams, and goals, read, be productive, etc. Become a Decision-Maker at Work — 91% of the rich in my study were a decision-maker where they worked. Do Work You At Least Like — 86% of the rich in my study liked what they did for a living. The Bottom Line. Everyone wants to be on top of the mountain, but few are willing to make the climb. The 1% control 82% of the wealth because the 1% are willing to climb the mountain. If you want to be one of the 1%, you need to start climbing. Benefits of Setting Daily Goals
How to Set Daily Goals Part 2 Learning how to set daily goals is an important skill that is easily overlooked. What are daily goals? Why is setting daily goals important? benefits of setting daily goals tips for setting daily goals When is the best time to write daily goals? How many goals should I set? How to avoid distractions How can daily goals help you to accomplish long-term goals? What are Daily Goals? Our daily goals are targets that we'd like to achieve by the end of each day. A goal is anything we direct our efforts toward achieving. Daily goals can be as ambitious as you want. They're probably part of your larger, long-term goals, or they could be something you want to accomplish each day, like forming good habits. Why is setting daily goals important? Some of our goals will take a long time to accomplish, and that's perfectly fine. They force us to look at our situation today, not tomorrow or next week, but today. When we set daily goals, we're productive each day. We're constantly creating action plans, and they teach us the importance of planning. Our daily goals also help us feel productive to stay motivated. Benefits of setting daily goals 1. Procrastination is less of an issue with smaller goals 2. You can keep track of and manage your progress more easily 3. You feel more obligated to complete them 4. You'll feel satisfied because you're accomplishing something each day 5. They help build momentum and motivation for larger goals
Today's focus is all about daily goals. That's right. Setting daily goals for yourself. Now, I could hear some people say, but Spencer, it's super overwhelming. It's like ridiculously overwhelming to set these daily goals, right? If you meet them, awesome. It's great. But what if I don't meet them?

Todd Lemense (Twitter.com/todd_lemense) becomes the first ever return guest on our program! A motivational speaker, he says that most people fall into the trap of "destination thinking" ... the idea that a single event, such as a product launch, wedding, or birth of a baby will be the "single moment that changes everything" when in reality, it's all about those consistent daily actions. Instead of being disappointed when "that one event" didn't change much, learn to enjoy the process. Manage your fear, hope, and expectations with daily goals. Don't cop-out by thinking "I don't have that problem." Educate yourself about your own emotional maturity, and spiritual/health/financial status to reach that higher standard. Everyone, including celebrities like Carrie Underwood and Tom Brady, have multiple coaches just to become 1% better (or maintain the same skill level), so you need a similar resource as well.
