Blood and Flesh: The Reel Life and Ghastly Death of Al Adamson (2019) synopsis: “Maverick indie filmmaker Al Adamson's real life was even crazier than one of the 30-plus sex 'n' schlock drive-in movies he made in the '60s and '70s.”Director: David GregoryIt's August, so you know what that means on Podcasting After Dark: our annual documentary month is here! This week Zak and Corey kick things off with their review of Blood and Flesh: The Reel Life and Ghastly Death of Al Adamson! This is from the director of Lost Soul: The Doomed Journey of Richard Stanley's Island of Dr. Moreau, which the boys covered before on the series. Blood and Flesh plays like a two-part documentary- The first half being a history lesson on who Al Adamson was, while the second part of the film plays out like a true crime doc. Even if you aren't familiar with cult movie maker, Al Adamson, you should definitely give this film a watch! His life was incredibly interesting, it's just very unfortunate how it ended.Leave a comment on our social media pages or Patreon and let us know what you think of this episode or the movie itself. Talking all about the strange but awesome film of The Island of Dr Moreau, the 1996 version along with the making of documentary, Lost Soul: The Doomed Journey of Richard Stanley's Island of Dr. Moreau. A movie that sort of got trampled on back in the day by critics but it's actually something incredibly special and fun in a remarkably similar way to Apocalypse Now. Plus, the fact that Marlon Brando and Val Kilmer hate each other but both just chew the scenery up in their scenes. Too much just cool stuff going on in this version of the film and also the what ifs of how it was all originally supposed to go with its original director. Seemingly plagued at every level, The Island of Dr. Moreau was one of the most publicly troubled movie productions in American cinema history. Rumors of colossal egos and unprofessional working attitudes combined with the sweltering conditions and plenty of behind-the-scenes drama were so prominent, that it led to a 2014 documentary about the making of the film.Lost Soul: The Doomed Journey of Richard Stanley's Island of Dr. Moreau

Richard Stanley is a South African filmmaker, known for his boundary-pushing work in the horror and science fiction genres. Stanley grew up in apartheid-era South Africa, studying anthropology and filming tribal dance and initiation rituals. In the 90s, he directed the horror features Hardware and Dust Devil. He was then famously fired from an adaptation of The Island of Dr. Moreau starring Marlon Brando and Val Kilmer after only three days on set, an event which later became the subject of the documentary, Lost Soul: The Doomed Journey of Richard Stanley's Island of Dr. Moreau. Stanley went on to direct several documentaries and returned to narrative film in 2019 with Color Out of Space starring Nicolas Cage. Richard Stanley and Alec discuss Stanley's upbringing in South Africa, what it's like directing Marlon Brando and his biggest regrets from the failed Moreau production.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Doomed Journey of Lost Souls: H.G. Wells'      The Island of Dr. Moreau On this week's episode of WatchThis W/RickRamos, Ibrahim & I sit down to discuss a Sci-Fi Classic, H.G. Wells' The Island of Dr. Moreau. With three English language productions, Wells' story has proven problematic for numerous filmmakers. This week we take a look at Erle C. Kenton's Island of Lost Souls (1932), featuring Charles Laughton & Bela Lugosi and the Richard Stanley/John Frankenheimer disaster, The Island of Dr. Moreau. With a bizarre, strange, and surprisingly enjoyable performance by Marlon Brando, a lackluster and disengaged Val Kilmer, and a thoroughly disgusted (and possibly suicidal) David Thewlis, this mess of a movie is truly bizarre requiring it's own documentary Lost Soul: The Doomed Journey of Richard Stanley's Island of Dr. Moreau (2014). As the age of 4 or 5 he read and fell in love with the H.G. Wells 1896 book The Island of Dr. Moreau, the story of a doctor who creates sentient beings from animals by the way of vivisection. Richard Stanley was disappointed in the previous two film adaptions of the work and dreamed that one day he would be able to make the film right. In 1996, he got his chance to make a big budget film Doctor Moreau. It didn’t go well! Q*bert's Sex Noises We return with the most suggestively titled episode yet. In off the Shelf, we saw and conquered a ménage à trois that included Adam Sandler's Pixels, Sion Sono's manic epic Love Exposure, and the catastrophic 'making of' Lost Soul: The Doomed Journey of Richard Stanley's Island of Dr Moreau. Our Film of the Week is Joel Edgerton's feature-length debut The Gift.

The new season has started and the guys are dropping science! Well, actually they’re catching up with each other and you. Listen to learn how Val Kilmer could have saved the world from evil cable bundles if his Amtrak train hadn’t been delayed. Home internet in Canada is just like mobile data, they charge per usage! What the hell? Look out US. Telus Internet Plans or Shaw. Coming soon, Paul will be fortunate enough to get with a surviving local telco for internet, AcenTek. If you want to support local Internet companies in Canada, see if TekSavvy is in your area. Curse of the cable bundles! Paul discusses the plus/minus of the Shedd Aquarium. Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy’s song. Blackfish trailer, a documentary about Seaworld. The Fortress of Solitude is neither secret, nor is it heated for guests. Will you go see Batman V Superman? To ignore the previous question, Daredevil on Netflix is good. The gents review Jurassic World. Paul talks Ant-Man and CGI Michael Douglas. Chris says, “Stop listening and watch Lost Soul: The Doomed Journey of Richard Stanley’s Island of Dr. Moreau.” Currently on Netflix. A tale about Val Kilmer from the set of The Steam Experiment. Highly recommended film from 1966, How to Steal a Million Paul worries about all the new characters in the new Star Wars film. Chris thinks Disney will play the “safe game”. Attack the Block is amazing. Currently on Netflix as well. Chris & Paul both enjoyed The Martian book. Paul is reading Packing For Mars a non-fiction book. Other suggested non-fiction authors, Bill Bryson and Michio Kaku. Chris was not a fan of Are We Rome?: The Fall of an Empire and the Fate of America Support Alan Tudyk & Nathan Fillion and rent Con Man on Vimeo. It looks amazing. Chris shares the moment he and his wife experienced at Edmonton Folk Fest. Watch the bands jam together here. Fast forward to 41:57 for the moment. Check out Star Trek Renegades! It’s highly recommended by Paul. Thanks again for listening and extra special congrats if you read all of this. In Episode 8, all three hosts have returned from trips to various breweries - Rich traveled to Dogfish Head in Delaware; George went to Tree House, Trillium, and Night Shift in Massachusetts and OEC in Connecticut; and Derek camped out at the Belgian Comes to Cooperstown event at Brewery Ommegang in New York - so, naturally, we go much more in-depth about beer and brewing than in previous episodes as we sample Eureka w/ Citra by Tree House Brewing Company, Nirvana IPA by Brewery Ommegang, The Cask by RavenBeer (Baltimore-Washington Beer Works), and The Calling IPA by Boulevard Brewing Company. We tell stories from our mini vacations and discuss what makes each brewery tour unique, pairing food with beer, the crazy tale of how Derek got alcohol poisoning, the documentary “Lost Soul: The Doomed Journey of Richard Stanley's Island of Dr. Moreau,” our first concerts and meeting “Weird Al” Yankovic, old music venues in the area, avoiding political discussions, remembering “Rowdy” Roddy Piper, editing curse words out of movies for TV, and more! Derek Warren’s popular How to Pair Beer with Everything column on nepascene.com is now a podcast! Joined by NEPA Scene founder and editor Rich Howells and beer enthusiast George Zvirblis, they’ll try a different brew each week and examine it through all the senses, diving into personal experiences and opinions, pop culture, news, or whatever comes to mind. While Derek is an experienced beer reviewer and aficionado (and co-host of the Beer Geeks Radio Hour on WILK 103.1 FM) and George is a beer collector who travels to breweries nationwide, Rich is more of a casual craft beer drinker (and co-host of the NEPA Scene Podcast), so they’ll both offer their own uncensored perspectives and ask guests to share their own. Every episode is available on iTunes, SoundCloud, Stitcher, and nepascene.com.
