POPULARITY
Justin Tipping's Him is a Jordan Peele-produced horror film in which a young quarterback discovers the kind of sacrifices it takes to become the GOAT of American Football. That young quarterback is played by Tyriq Withers, who is taken under the wing of a legendary quarterback played by Marlon Wayans, and in this Empire Podcast interview special Jamie Graham sits down with the duo for a fun chat about the film's themes, getting pumped in the gym, their favourite horror movies, and more. Jamie also sits down with Tipping for a deep dive into his thematic preoccupations, his reaction to some of the film's reviews, and his realisation that he may just have remade one of his favourite films. But with an American Football bent, of course. It's a cracking pair of interviews — as ever, the choice of whether you should see Him before listening is yours. But if you haven't seen Him yet, it's out now in cinemas across the UK.

A movie that wasn't...I REPEAT, A MOVIE THAT WASN'T DIRECTED OR WRITTEN BY JORDAN PEELE! HIM is the a look into the dark world of sports and what it takes to be, HIM! ...and the movie isn't that great either.
What does it mean to edit a sports horror film that blurs the line between spectacle and nightmare? For Taylor Mason, the answer was finding the rhythm that carried HIM through its shifting tones. This week on Below the Line, Skid is joined by Film Editor Taylor Mason to discuss her work on the Universal/Monkeypaw feature HIM, directed by Justin Tipping and starring Tyriq Withers and Marlon Wayans. Joining the conversation is Christopher Angel, a regular guest and co-host of the podcast, who adds his editorial perspective. The conversation cuts across: Building Taylor's creative partnership with director Justin Tipping, which began during their AFI collaborations Taylor's career arc through high-end assistant editing (e.g. Blade Runner 2049, Dune) before making the jump to feature editing Shaping HIM's hybrid genre — balancing horror, satire, and sports narrative in the edit room Sculpting tone shifts, from unnerving silence to explosive sequences, while keeping character central Using helmet POVs, flash cuts, and hallucinatory visuals to plunge the viewer into the chaos of football Integrating VFX and x-ray sequences to reflect Cam's physical deterioration and internal collapse Bringing personal resonance to the material, informed by her father's NFL legacy and her own complicated relationship with the sport Cutting the film's finale — a climax that threads horror, absurdism, and social critique What emerges is a portrait of an editor whose craft blends instinct and discipline — drawing on a deep workload, creative trust, and personal context to cut a film that is as brutal as it is thought-provoking.
There haven't been many sports-related horror films, but perhaps there should be considering the dangers professional athletes face both in and out of the game. “Him” brings a culty/supernatural twist to being the GOAT. Tune in to hear us break down all the aggro behavior, all the shirtless workout scenes, the strong performances by Marlon Wayans and Tyriq Withers, and how well it delivered its message. Go sports!

Mike talks to Zach Cregger, the director of Weapons. Zach talks about what it’s like to have a No. 1 movie, what celebrity he hopes watches his film and why comedians are good at horror. Zach and Mike also get into a debate about punk rock. Mike then shares his Top 5 Directors of the 2020s so far. In the Movie Review, Mike talks about Him starring Marlon Wayans and Tyriq Withers. It’s about a rising quarterback who suffers a potentially career-ending injury after being attacked by an unhinged fan. Just when all seems lost, he receives a lifeline when his football hero offers to train him at an isolated compound. Mike talks about why he felt bamboozled, how it lacked a plot and why even though he didn’t fully love it that it could quite possibly be ahead of its time. In the Trailer Park, Mike talks about Sydney Sweeney stepping into the ring as boxing legend Christy Martin. She never imagined life beyond her small-town roots in West Virginia until she discovered a knack for punching people. PEELE PRODUCER LABEL NOSEDIVES WITH HIM - STULTIFYING MISFIRE!Jordan Peele, the innovative and stunning director of Get Out and Nope, lends his (producer) name to HIM, a new horror film about a young football quarterback facing an aging rival for the top spot on a pro team. SPOILER FREE: 0:00-30:15 SPOILERS: 30:15-END In this episode we tackle HIM (2025), the horror-thriller that attempts to mash up the brutality of sports culture with supernatural dread. Produced by Jordan Peele, directed by Justin Tipping, and starring Marlon Wayans, Tyriq Withers, and Julia Fox, the film follows young quarterback Cam Cade as he accepts a seemingly golden opportunity to train under legendary quarterback Isaiah White—only to find the path to glory is darker than he imagined. We explore what HIM does well: its unsettling visuals, strong performances (especially Wayans), and its ambition in critiquing the sport's glamor, sacrifice, and the cult of celebrity. But we also unpack its shortcomings: moments where the story gets fuzzy, pacing that unevenly swings between high tension and confusing detours, and themes that seem more hinted at than fully realized. September winds down in unspectacular fashion here at Breakfast All Day with two new movies you're welcome to avoid. We begin with "HIM," a horror film set in the world of pro football. Lots of style, cool production design and some striking cinematography, but it becomes overwhelming and -- eventually -- just plain silly. Marlon Wayans, Tyriq Withers and Julia Fox star. In theaters. Then we discuss "A Big Bold Beautiful Journey," which isn't much better. Colin Farrell and Margot Robbie meet cute at a wedding, then get stuck on a magical realist road trip in a rented Saturn where they must return to pivotal moments from their pasts. Kogonada ("Columbus," "After Yang") directed, and we usually love him, but this is cloying and hollow. In theaters. Finally, we have a lengthy Movie News LIVE! for you. We spent quite a bit of time on Jimmy Kimmel and Robert Redford, but we also discussed the new Taylor Swift movie and the trailer for "Anaconda." Join us every Friday at Noon Pacific. Thanks for being here! Join us before a showing of ONE BATTLE AFTER ANOTHER on opening weekend. We'll be at CinemaWest Beach Cities before the 6pm showing on Friday, Sept. 26. Say hello to us in the lobby bar starting around 530pm, then head into the theater and see the movie on their GIANT screen.
