As my regular listeners will know, most of my episodes are interview based. Well, this one’s going to be different. In response to the COVID 19 pandemic, I recently teamed up with acclaimed ergonomist and occupational therapist, Dr. Linda Miller from EWI Works to produce a video about how to work safely from home. So what I’m going to do for this episode is play the soundtrack from that video. If you would like a downloadable version of the video that you can distribute to your employees on your internal network, please reach out to me or Linda on LinkedIn. If you want us to customize the video with your logo or specific narration, we can talk about that. - marv ---------------------------- No Harm is the health and safety podcast for HSE professionals. On the last two episodes of my podcast, I brought you stories from the Big Block Turnaround at the Shell Deer Park refinery near Houston, Texas. I promised you more, so here we go. In episode 43 we’re going to get into some of the health topics that were being promoted at the turnaround. Every day for four weeks, the health team at Deer Park visited the various lunch tents to do presentations, have educational contests and give away fun prizes. There were four big topics … one for each week. There was heat and hydration, sleep and fatigue, nutrition, and finally, physical activity and exercise. I was really impressed to see first hand how the craft contractors at the turnaround reacted to these lunch events. They learned a lot and had a great time with the contests and prizes. - marv ------------------------------------- No Harm is the health and safety podcast for HSE professionals. As communicators, our goal is to tell our story in such a way that our target audience hears it, understands it and is motivated by it to take action. But in a world with more marketing channels than ever before: - How do you know which channels to utilize for your audience? - What’s the right blend of traditional and digital media? - How do you tie together your channels, messaging and timing into one cohesive strategy? In this professional development session, Catrin Owen, CEO of Calder Bateman, was joined by Linda Hoang, Digital Strategist at Calder Bateman, and their client Brittany Lewchuk, to share the integrated marketing communications strategy for the “Just Call #211” campaign that won the IABC Social Media Programs Award in 2017. In this episode of the No Harm Health and Safety Podcast, Marvin returns to Vernon, British Columbia to talk to Jeremy Vandekerkhove from the Vernon Search and Rescue Helicopter Winch Team. As you may recall from episode 11, this group provides services not only in recreational situations such as hunting, fishing and dirt biking ... they also provide important services to industrial locations like forestry, mining and the oil patch. When a standard ambulance can't get access to a remote accident scene, the Vernon Search and Rescue team flies into action. They can get critically ill or injured patients to hospital in as little as 15 - 20 minutes instead of the more typical 3 - 4 hours. Obviously, this can have a dramatic impact on patient outcomes. But there's a human factor that can have a big impact on these outcomes: injury denial. Jeremy explains how some people can become seriously injured, and perhaps with misplaced optimism, hope things aren't so bad and the pain will just go away. By the time emergency services are contacted, the rescue mission can be complicated by bad weather, lack of daylight or other factors. We hope you will consider using this episode as inspiration for a safety moment within your organization, where you may want to talk about injury denial at one of your toolbox talks or staff meetings. Thousands of volunteers joined Habitat for Humanity's 34th Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Work Project to build 150 homes in celebration of Canada's 150th anniversary during the week of July 10. Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter and former First Lady Rosalynn Carter built along side future homeowners and community volunteers in the Edmonton area and Winnipeg, with additional projects taking place across the country. How did they handle the health and safety challenges with such a huge volunteer workforce? And what can you learn about keeping volunteers and visitors safe on your site? In this episode of the No Harm health and safety podcast, host Marvin Polis talks to Marcy Strong from VisionWorks Consulting. Marcy is an organizational effectiveness expert who has worked for national and multinational corporations. The topic of this episode: Why is my HSE initiative not working? Well, it may be your culture. According to Marcy, we have a heavy reliance on policies and structure in the health and safety world. She says those things are important, but not the place to start. People and relationships are the place to start. We may think that we have a policy that will drive behaviours, but relationships in worker teams have more power. In this episode of the No Harm health and safety podcast, host Marvin Polis talks to Gerry Shimko, the Executive Director of the City of Edmonton's Traffic Safety Section. The topic: Vision Zero. The City of Edmonton is the first major Canadian city to adopt Vision Zero, a global initiative to save lives and eliminate major injuries from motor vehicle collisions. Marvin meets up with Gerry at a Vision Zero run-walk-cycle event where families who have been affected by serious incidents are being honoured. Vision Zero began in Sweden in 1997 and that country now has the lowest rate of traffic fatalities in the world. More recently, Vision Zero has been adopted by those considered to be leaders in traffic safety including countries such as Australia and England, and numerous major cities in the United States. In January 2016, Canada adopted Vision Zero as a federal strategy. Gerry talks about the City's leadership role in Vision Zero and calls for a high level of corporate involvement. Lafarge is on hand at this event, showing a Ready Mix truck that has been modified with important safety features designed to reduce serious incidents with other road users. This is a strategy that has been successfully adopted in other parts of the world. Lafarge is also implementing an in-vehicle monitoring system (IVMS) to help the company understand root causes of incidents such as hard braking and cornering, as well as to assist drivers with blind spots. In episode 007 of the No Harm health and safety podcast, host Marvin Polis shadows some of the crews working at a recent turnaround at the Shell Scotford complex. Shell Scotford consists of an upgrader, oil refinery, chemicals plants and a carbon capture and storage facility. It’s one of North America’s most efficient, modern and integrated hydrocarbon processing sites, converting oilsands-derived bitumen into products like gasoline, diesel, jet fuel and feedstock for the plastics industry. Turnarounds are huge maintenance events where some portions of the plant are shut down and a large number of employees and contractors descend upon the plant to replace and repair various infrastructure. Turnarounds are expensive, complex and require keen attention to safety. The Adopt a Crew initiative was conceived prior to one of their recent turnarounds as Shell acknowledged that building personal relationships is essential to a culture of caring and keeping everybody safe on site during this huge maintenance event. The turnaround was kicked off with a gathering where Shell employees were paired up with specific foremen. This paring remained in place for the entire duration of the turnaround, where relationships were established to influence safety performance. In this episode of the No Harm Health and Safety Podcast, Marvin returns to the Shuswap Lake System in British Columbia to talk to Pat Gau, Deputy Station Leader for the Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue. The topic: Kids Don't Float! Kids Don't Float is the somewhat provocative name of a public safety program in BC that pretty much tells it like it is. And because kids don't actually float (neither do you), the dedicated volunteers at the Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue started a program to provide loaner life jackets to boaters who don't have the right size personal floatation devices (PFDs) for children. The program has been an amazing success! Welcome to a very special episode saluting volunteer first responders. It’s springtime in here in Canada, a time when families turn their attention to planning summer vacations. Here in western Canada, there’s a place along the TransCanada highway that’s a very popular vacation destination because of the vast lake system known as the Shuswaps. The town of Sicamous is at the centre of all this and it happens to be an extremely popular place for houseboats and all forms of water sports. But what happens when visitors experience emergency health problems or accidents out on the lakes? With more than 1,000 miles of shoreline and few roads, who’s there to help? In this episode Marvin originally recorded two years ago, you’ll learn how a group of concerned citizens in the town couldn’t just let a tenuous safety situation continue. They solicited donations to purchase a used rescue boat and created British Columbia's first inland station of the Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue. They continue to volunteer and raise funds to make this part of Canada safer for you and your family. As we plan our summer vacations, think about the debt of gratitude we owe to community volunteers like these. No Harm is the health and safety podcast for HSE professionals. Hello everyone and welcome to another episode of Monetizing Your Creativity. I’m your host Marvin Polis. This is actually going to be a very short episode because I’m here to let you know that our podcast is going on hiatus for a while. In the meantime, we’d like to suggest that you dive into the archives for some inspirational episodes to help you launch and leverage your creative career. With 125 episodes, there’s something for everyone. Even if an episode seems like it might not apply to you, there are universal lessons everywhere. So for instance, if you’re an actor, do listen to the episodes about music … and so on. On behalf of my co-producer and co-host Fred Keating, we want to encourage you to stay subscribed so you’ll know when we have news to announce. If you want to keep tabs on Fred, you can follow him on Facebook and you really should check out an intriguing project he’s working on called Studio in the Sky. Just go to Vimeo and search for Studio in the Sky, new trailer. As for me, you can check out a professional development podcast that I produce for a local chapter of my professional association, the International Association of Business Communicators, otherwise known as IABC. This podcast also talks about earning a living with your creativity, although the focus is much more narrow than the Monetizing Your Creativity podcast. So if you’re interested in applying your talents specifically to marketing and public relations, go to iTunes or SoundCloud and search for IABC Edmonton. Thanks for listening, everyone.
