With All Due Respect

Home - it's an evocative word and one that has instant access to our emotions, whether that's when Dorothy knocks together her shiny red heels and says there's no place like home or when angelic children's choirs sing I still call Australia home on a Qantas ad. The Bible culminates with an image of God at home with humanity. Home speaks to us of familiarity, safety, welcome, love. Yet home doesn't just have positive associations. Some are home less while many have found their homes to be anything but safe. This episode Megan Powell du Toit and Michael Jensen begin by discussing whether human beings are actually any good at making home for themselves or others. Then the WADR team speak to former NSW Liberal Minister and newly appointed chair of the Faith Housing Alliance, Rob Stokes about the current housing crisis. And to finish, continuing 'the whole vibe' of the episode, they hang out with the Kerrigans in The Castle.

Hospitality is a word that conjures up images of wine glasses and silver cutlery. It's the word for the hotel trade or the type of entertaining that looks good on Instagram: themed dinner parties and pretty hand soaps for the guest toilet. Yet hospitality is also a word that occurs in the Bible. Famously, Hebrews 13:2 urges, "Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it." But exactly what are we being called to do? Is it an occasional drinks with the next-door neighbours or something more? Megan Powell du Toit and Michael Jensen talk about who exactly are our neighbours when it comes to hospitality and what it might require of us. To help the WADR team out, Michael and Megan also talk to Jon Owen who has lived a remarkably hospitable life. And then they sing along with Come From Away, the musical about 7,000 unexpected guests.

In this episode I talk to Megan Powell du Toit about the role of the arts in preaching. We talk about how Megan's love for the arts has made its way into her preaching. At the heart of the discussion is the idea that good preaching is much more than merely the transfer of information, because the sermon is targeting a lot more than just the mind. Along the way we talk about preaching as performance, the importance of communicating in way that reaches the whole person, the difference between preaching and teaching, engaging the emotions in preaching, the importance of reflection, how to preach the sublime and transcendent, PowerPoint, seeing preaching as turning “ink” into “blood,” preaching that connects to life, sermon length—is it worth discussing?, the Bible as a neglected resource on ways to communicate, how to preach in a way so that people feel the truth of what is being preached, the advantages of the arts in preaching, using movies, books, stories, music, song, poetry, visual art, our body, gestures, clothing, and the challenge of using the arts to preach the sublime and transcendent without it becoming cheesy. In this episode, Megan Powell du Toit and Michael Jensen are talking about Christian Nationalism. Nationalism promotes the distinctiveness of the people of a nation. Christian nationalism goes one step further, defining a nation by its faith, and maintaining it should be protected by the state, enshrined in its laws, and actively maintained. But is this so? Is Christian Nationalism even compatible with the Christian faith? In a western society that is often spoken of as Post-Christian, the relationship between Christianity and the State has become an increasingly vexed issue. Michael and Megan start their investigation by reviewing a documentary that seeks to look at how this is playing out in US evangelicalism. Moving on, they discuss whether Christian Nationalism is a problem in an Australian context. Despite coming from different Christian traditions, do they share any?And finally, it's a Marg and Dave segment on the poetry of a questioning man of faith - Christian Wiman.

In the wake of Refugee Week, Michael Jensen and Megan Powell du Toit talk to Regent College's Mark Glanville about the book he has co-written with his brother, Refuge Reimagined: Biblical Kinship in Global Politics.Mark Glanville brings the biblical scholarship of a respected theologian, while his brother Luke adds the insight of an associate professor in the Department of International Relations at Australian National University. Then the WADR team examines Australia's attitude to refugees and how it mirrors an international approach that is increasingly overshadowed by concerns about personal and national security, economics, and culture. Finally, it's time to examine the new television series Stateless, and how Australian actor Cate Blanchett interprets life in an immigration detention center.

Megan is the Publishing Manager at the Australian College of Theology, and co-hosts the 'With All Due Respect' podcast. Megan is a collector and a seller. She's a collector's seller: she knows what's what when it comes to reselling antiques. She hawks her wares up and down the interwebs, with virtual shops set up on all the sites: Mercari, Etsy, eBay, etc. During the interview, she lets loose some insider secrets about successfully reselling, and a bushel of great tips on searching for items online. Google image was a game-changer when it comes to finding antiques, and Facebook marketplace is THE hip and happenin' spot for good deals. We get a few flashbacks to the dark ages of the internet when Megan tells us about her mom being an old-school eBay seller. Her collections have range, just like all of us, but she's got a particular affinity for holiday/Christmas decor. It's a true sight to behold, though It's much easier to understand the glory of it all if you simply look at her Instagram. Check out those Santa mugs! And the St. Patrick's Day pieces? Are you head over heels yet?  Post-show disclaimer, and seriously Jill is sick of our bullshit: Don't rob your local Goodwill. Or do, but don't post about it online.  intro and Outro Music: Down the Rabbit Hole by myuu Source: https://soundcloud.com/myuu/down-the-rabbit-hole License: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/ Edited by: Grae Copyediting by: Spell Check

Currently a final year medical student at King's College London. Megan took up triathlon/duathlon in her first year. She did her first degree in Biomedical Sciences at Newcastle University- She has  been at uni for 8 years, At Newcastle she  used to row and won a few BUCS medals. A shoulder injury and a gruelling training schedule where she would fall asleep in most lectures led her to think about a change of sport. She played netball for a year (coached by Sarah Harding who was episode 6 on this podcast!) but wanted to move away from team sports to have more flexibility at medical school. Her mum Maria Powell is an extremely successful AG multisport athlete (15 podiums and 7 wins at Euro/World Championships in all disciplines except duathlon). Her family holidays used to revolve around watching her mum race around the world and family training camps at Club La Santa, Lanzarote! Megan was always inspired to take up the sport but didn't want to tread on her Mums toes! She grew up doing quite a bit of running in her spare time as a stress release/mental wellbeing but only did team sports competitively. Megans decision to take up triathlon when she moved to London was very much supported by her Mum  (she bought Megan her  first road bike for her 21st!) and she has coached her for the last 4 years!Swimming has always been Megans least favourite and weakest discipline. She has had a two year battle with shoulder impingements and even managed to partially dislocate her shoulder in her sleep! This frustration led Megan to focus more on duathlons. She did her first sprint duathlon qualifier event at Oulton Park in 2017 where she won her age group (6th overall) and her first standard distance duathlon qualifier in 2018 at Anglian water where she was first female overall. She enjoy both sprint and standard and have got into a cycle of doing sprint at Europeans and standard at worlds. Sprint distance draft-legal racing is really fun but standard distance non-drafting really tests you physically!Megans boyfriend Hugh has been a big part of her journey into AG racing. Prior to her taking up the sport he had done 2 ironman triathlons and was doing a lot of cycle racing! She convinced him to come to the qualifiers with her and give it a go and he has also done tremendously well! They have shared the podium a few times at world and european events! Looking forwardsMegan will graduate and start work as a doctor next year in August 2021. She is hoping to get one big season in before life becomes a bit more hectic! She wants to become a GP eventually and is very passionate about getting the public active! There are several doctors who have been professional triathletes at points in their life and she is  very inspired by them!Mental health awareness is very important to her. She has experienced both depression and disordered eating- probably RED-S in hindsight. She is very passionate about changing the idea in endurance sports that lighter= faster. Many athletes get sucked into not fuelling themselves well enough (sometimes voluntarily sometimes not) and it generally always leads to worse performances! She is a big fan of the Train Brave initiative and she volunteers with BEAT at university (the UK's largest eating disorder charity).to find out about the charities that Megan supports you can findthem  at....Train_Brave  on Instagram and their web page is trainbrave.orgBEAT is on Instagram beateatingdisorders_voice and their webpage is beateatingdisorders.organd if you would like to send us an e mail you can send it to agegroupmultisportpodcast@gmail.comfind us on Instagram amp_1967Twitter  agegroupmultisportpodcastFacebook AMPGBWebsite is agegroupmultisportpodcast.buzzsprout.com
