Content advisory: this podcast contains themes of suicide and mental health. This week on the podcast, Dr Louise is joined by Andrea Newton, a postmenopausal woman whose own experience of mental health during the menopause lead her to train as a tutor with the National Centre for Suicide Prevention Training. Over the last six years, Andrea has trained thousands of people in suicide intervention skills and she is now training to become a menopause coach. Andrea explains how her work in the corporate world has allowed her to share the importance of educating line managers, HR managers, and everyone about the menopause. She is also the author of the book, Could it be Your Hormones Love? (And Other Questions Not to Ask a Menopausal Woman). Andrea shares her tips on widening the conversation about menopause: Women need to educate themselves more about how the menopause affects all aspects of their health and be better at advocating for themselves. Let's take the conversation to the wider audience and stop the awful, narrow, stereotypical view of menopause. Instead, educate people so we can avoid tribunals, retain talent and have more menopause-friendly businesses. Get comfortable with the uncomfortable and have conversations about things like menopause, mental health, suicide risk. We need to stop waiting for people to reach out, and we need to get better at reaching in and being proactive. 00:00 What if you had an opportunity to ask one of the visionary pioneers on The menopausal woman anything? Well, I did. As the Flipping 50 podcast launches into the second 500 episodes, I am honored to be joined on this episode by Dr. Christiane Northrup. She is not only an articulate and intelligent woman who has insights few others do; she is funny. Behind the scenes I told her after the interview, interviewing her was like dinner and a show. And I'm sure you too are going to love it. My Guest: Christiane Northrup, M.D., visionary pioneer in women's health, is a board-certified OB/GYN with more than thirty years of clinical experience, former assistant clinical professor of OB/GYN at the University of Vermont College of Medicine, and three-time New York Times bestselling author of Women's Bodies, Women's Wisdom, The Wisdom of Menopause(1994) and Goddesses Never Age. In 2013, Reader's Digest named Dr. Northrup one of the “100 Most Trusted People in America.” In 2016, she was named one of Oprah Winfrey's Super Soul 100, a group of leaders who are using their voices and talent to awaken humanity. And in 2020 & 2021, she was included in the Watkins Spiritual 100, a list of living people that make a unique and spiritual contribution on a global scale... Questions we answer in this episode about the menopausal women's body: Q) Why do you call it the Wisdom of Menopause? Q) You say that “The brain catches fire at menopause.” What do you mean by that? 29:16 Q) You also say that the “dictates of the soul” come to the fore. Can you give us an example of this? Q) What are your thoughts on hormone replacement? Do you think every woman should consider it? Q) We've visited this topic but it's such a good idea to clarify the difference between synthetic and a bioidentical hormone? Explain a bit about the difference of using a compounding pharmacy? 33:01 Q) You recommend the herb Pueraria Mirifica [Pronounce pwuh·raa·ree·uh mr·i·fuh·kuh] for menopausal symptoms. When should a menopausal woman start this? Can she take it if she's already on hormones? 38:58 There is one gold standard… exercise. 39:42 Q) Many women complain of a “muffin top” around their middles, even though they haven't gained any weight. Let's unpack that for them. Q) You say that it is women in their 60's and beyond who are having the best sex of their lives. Many women do of course experience vaginal dryness, so how can we equal the playing field for them? December is overwhelming and nobody's helped when we become short-tempered and sweaty. So we can head this off by... indulging in every whim. Well. Maybe not every whim. But most of them? Wendy offers her twist on all the things we're told to do.
Today I am by myself and reflecting on the ever changing parts of my own life. After a conversation with my friend this morning and comparing our 'symptoms' it was so lovely to speak so openly and honestly and have a good laugh about it too. I am learning and growing into this phase of my life and allowing myself to be kinder and more compassionate to my body. I feel this is a very sacred and special time and I am open to all the new inspirations and wisdom that comes my way. I would love to hear your stories too. What's a menopausal woman to do when she's short on time and energy and long on goals? This episode is a quick reminder of what works – according to science – and what does not – according to science. What's the ideal schedule for a midlife woman? That was a recent question asked in our Flipping50 Insiders group. I'm combining the response, with … when I'm busy! What's Inside The evidence-based details relayed here are backed up by 37 years observations of women in midlife, including many fitness instructors who became easily burnt out. Our Flipping50 community of 200,000 women in menopause provide the additional proof through feedback, questions, and requests. You can hop into the Flipping50 Insiders Facebook group too where podcast listeners, YouTube Flipping50tv subscribers, and Flipping 50 TV episode viewers gather for a community of like-minded women. For menopausal woman, with a unique set of hormone changes, metabolism, and body composition - not to mention socialization, I won't keep you in suspense. Here's what I'll share: What works What doesn't work Why this is true What works? Quality strength training sessions HIIT sessions Short exercise snacks of mobility, core, and movement What doesn't? Skipping Weekend warrior Too little recovery Split routine strength (if weight loss is a goal, and adrenal fatigue is a threat) What? Not More? For a menopausal woman the shock is almost always about the reduced volume of exercise that is required. I want to emphasize “required.” While you may still be thinking, if you do the required and then you lose do MORE, you'll get better results. IN THIS case, it's required that you do LESS> But listen, this is like already having an A+ and then doing extra credit. It's not going to change your GPA, but it might take away from your ability to do work in other areas of your education or life. While you keep trying to do better, essentially going for the 4.2 instead of the 4.0 average in English… your math and science grades are falling. Overall, someone else with a better overall performance gets to be the valedictorian. If you exercise to excess and skip the recovery, the nutrition, the family and personal life balance, chances are, you get tired, fat and weaker if not injured. Support Do less. Just do it in a way that's made for you… not marketed to you. Flipping 50 programs are 100% built for you. Flipping50 Fitness Specialists are trained to identify when your workouts aren't working with the rest of your life, sometimes before you realize the signs and symptoms were there all along. Some programs and memberships are open only a few times a year for enrollment. If you're a trainer or health coach, there's never been a better time to be a menopause fitness specialist through Flipping50. Resource Mentioned in the Episode: How to Choose An Exercise Program

In Episode 4 Kyle and Candace talk with Compounding Pharmacist extraordinaire, Natalie Gustafson, about how she fell in love with compounding and became determined to raise the bar on prescribed hormone therapies for women. Natalie explains how compounding pharmacists differ from those that fill our prescriptions at the local Walgreens, and why bioidentical hormones tailored to individual need are a better option than one-size-fits-all prescribing for women seeking relief from life disrupting symptoms during perimenopause, menopause and post hysterectomy. We learn more about the history, art and science behind compounding practices and dispel common myths. We also get to hear more about the good fight compounding pharmacists like Natalie and others have been waging on Capitol Hill for years to protect safe access to natural hormones, and we answer the all-important question: Can women rest assured that bioidentical alternatives to HRT are here to stay? Some additional issues and answers we delve into in this episode: How bioidentical hormones differ from synthetic versions (e.g. Premarin), which natural plant substances they are made from, the different forms they can be made into (creams, gels, patches, lozenges) to ensure efficient delivery and absorption, etc. How compounders are training providers to use hormone test results as a guide to safe dosing. Why a compounding pharmacist is an invaluable resource for women and how to find one in your area.

Welcome to a new season of the A Brilliant Gamble Podcast for 2019! I'm so excited to bring you my conversation with TV presenter and journalist, Andrea McLean, because there couldn't be a better way to start the year. Not only is Andrea a huge presence on TV as co-host of Loose Women but she's also the author of a new book – Confessions of a Menopausal Woman – which tells the story of her own abrupt menopause and what the experience is teaching her (and us). She's also launched This Girl is On Fire as a place where women can find information, fun and inspiration whatever stage of life they're at. In this conversation, we not only talk about The Change, of course, but about how hitting midlife provides a brilliant opportunity to take life by the horns and make some bold decisions about how you want to live and work. In this episode, we discuss: Menopause, signs and symptoms Mid-life crisis and mid-life awakening Authenticity and discovering who you are Being brave What ageing means to us Our thoughts about success and failure Our love of dogs (with a special outtake at the end of the show!) You'll love this episode if you're at a crossroads, want to make some bold changes in your life, have made any new year resolutions, want to live more authentically or want to embrace getting older and wiser! Talking of which, A Brilliant Gamble Online is a development programme designed specifically to help you make your bold ideas become reality. Based on the tools I used to make The Big Trip and start our Smallholding Adventure and tried and tested by people going through real, practical changes in their lives, this programme helps you stay on track when you want to give up, gives you the tools to enjoy the process of change and understand how to get out of your own way, and encourages you with inspiration and practical ideas. If you're alone you'll go home, so get some support and make 2019 the year you change your life for good! For more information visit the programme homepage and stay in touch with us on Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter and of course, the website.

The Menopause - it's something that roughly half of us will all go through, yet is often a taboo subject. Championing the change for a more menopause-friendly society is British TV presenter and menopausal woman (!) Andrea McLean, who in this episode, shares her experience and the challenges she's faced as a result. From backpacking through to resignations, Andrea outlines her story to date of how she ended up hosting Loose Women - one of Britain's most popular daytime talkshows. Being in the public eye, Andrea described the challenges that early-onset menopause presented, including frequent and powerful panic attacks and how that led her to seek medical help and start a course of HRT and ultimately make the decision to have a full hysterectomy - which she announced live on TV. Fast-forward several years and now Andrea is a leading champion for the menopause and is writing a book, based on her experiences, to help other women thrive during this period of great change. Andrea shares with Pete different ways to improve how you feel, including through diet, exercise and sleep, with the pair going on to challenge the 'perfection' mindset and how to feel strong. Wrapping up this incredible episode, Andrea outlines her time on 'Dancing on Ice' and 'Tumble' and how getting outside of her comfort zone is the key to self-growth, ultimately giving her the strength to show vulnerability in front of a live TV audience.
