In today's episode, Shawn O'Malley (@Shawn_OMalley_) breaks down John Deere, a company as American as Levi's blue jeans and apple pie. John Deere is a fascinating business because it has survived for nearly two hundred years and remained an industry leader for much of that time, continually building their world-famous green-and-yellow tractors. Deere is about much more than tractors, though, and you might be surprised to learn that its story is really about cutting-edge technology. Deere's equipment is extremely sophisticated, and the company is working on autonomous tractors that may very well be the future of agriculture. After breaking down Deere's business, Shawn shares his thoughts on the company's valuation and his decision on whether to add it to The Intrinsic Value Portfolio he's building each week on the show, plus so much more! David Magee, author of Things Have Changed, joins us to explain today's teen addiction crisis involving social media, potent synthetic drugs and vulnerable mental health.Bonfire Digital Wellness has a diverse team of seasoned, compassionate school counselors, ready to coach your teen. Check it out today and take advantage of a 1-month FREE trial: BonfireDW.org/talkingtoteensFull Show Notes Teen substance use has drastically changed in recent years. With skyrocketing rates of anxiety, depression and addiction, today's parents are facing new and confusing challenges when trying to help their kids. We used to assume teens mainly struggled with peer pressure around drinking or smoking cigarettes. Now, teens face a host of new pressures tied to social media, a lack of sleep, and easy access to dangerously potent substances. To help parents understand what's really happening and how we can better communicate with struggling teens, we spoke with David Magee, author of Things Have Changed: What Every Parent and Educator Should Know About the Student Mental Health and Substance Misuse Crisis. After losing his son William to an accidental overdose in college, David became an advocate for better understanding teen addiction. He now speaks nationwide to students and parents, and started the William McGee Institute for Student Well Being at Ole Miss. It's Not The Same SubstancesToday's teens aren't using their parent's drugs. While past generations struggled with alcohol, cigarettes or weaker strains of marijuana, today's kids are taking synthetic drugs, often laced with fentanyl, that are exponentially more potent and dangerous, David explains. He describes a current epidemic of fake Adderall pills being sold to high schoolers and college students. The counterfeit pills are never actual Adderall, but instead made of unknown substances designed to be addictive. Almost all contain fentanyl, says David. Kids think they're buying a familiar drug, but it's actually much more treacherous. This is just one example of how substances have changed. David explains today's marijuana can have THC levels of 70-90%, compared to just 4-8% in the 1990s. He says schools are shocked when drug tests come back 6 or 7 times higher than just a few years ago.Social Media Enables Secret AddictionDavid explains that the majority of illegal transactions happen over social media apps and payment platforms. Kids are finding connections on Instagram and Snapchat, then paying through Venmo or CashApp to stay under the radar.Seeing multiple Venmo payments in and out of a teen's account every day could signal that something is amiss, says David. He explains that parents needs to understand today's digital landscape to spot warning signs. Punishment and phone monitoring usually backfires, while asking caring questions can help kids open up.Focus on Feelings, Not Scare TacticsWell-meaning authority figures often take a punitive approach, trying to scare teens away from substances through condemnation. But David explains this usually has the opposite effect, making kids feel ashamed in ways that increase their desire to use.Instead, he suggests leading with empathy, compassion and care. Getting kids the right kind of therapy or counseling is crucial, preferably with someone who specializes in teen addiction. Building teens' emotional intelligence through ongoing communication within families is key.Above all, David focuses on helping teens cultivate sustainable joy in their lives, not just harping on what they shouldn't do. He explains that happy, engaged teens are less likely to self-medicate through dangerous substance use.If you found this episode helpful, check out David's website at davidmcgee.com for more resources. His book provides practical guidance for parents and educators struggling with today's newly complex issues around teen mental health and addiction. Nyt arvostelussa Tom Hanksin uusin elokuva a Man Called Otto. Elokuva on tarinaltaan tuttu. Elokuva perustuu Ruotsalaiseen kirjaan A Man Called Ove (En man som hetter Ove, Suom. Mikä on paras Tom Hanks leffa 2010-luvulla?
Screenwriters seldom get the attention they deserve, which is just one reason Leonard and Jessie were happy to talk to David Magee, who wrote (or co-wrote) Finding Neverland, Life of Pi, Mary Poppins Returns, and the new Tom Hanks movie A Man Called Otto, among others. He also scripted the upcoming live-action remake of The Little Mermaid. Clearly, he's good at what he does, but the tale of how he became a screenwriter is perhaps the best story of all and is, to the best of our knowledge, unique. Tune in and hear it for yourself.
In this episode we talk to David Magee who is currently living and performing mostly in Cancun Mexico. He is a mentalist that has a fast paced stage show that is unlike other mentalists who have been know to bore audiences. David is a great guy and an amazing entertainer. His powerful story is now available as the latest edition of McCallie's Stories from the Ridge podcast series.

As a child, best-selling author David Magee felt that his life purpose was to write a book that could change lives. He recently told his remarkable journey of triumph in the face of trauma in his book “Dear William: A Father's Memoir of Addiction, Recovery, Love, and Loss.” A few years ago, David lost his son William to an accidental overdose just one year after his other son Hudson was in a three-day coma following his own overdose. At the same time, his daughter Mary was struggling with an eating disorder, and David himself was in recovery from an alcohol and substance use disorder. But before he passed away, William encouraged David to write about their family's struggles to let others know they are not alone. With his wife's blessing, David published this book, which gives readers an open and honest glimpse into the Magee family's story. In the latest episode of Heart of the Matter, David sits down with Elizabeth Vargas to discuss how recovery isn't linear and is in fact a journey; the insight he'd give to parents whose children are struggling with addiction and mental health challenges; and how David is helping other families locally in Mississippi.Content warning: This episode contains mentions of death, as well as in-depth discussions of substance use. “There is something about being content…we talked about us being neighbors, I have outgrown my house but I'm not moving. I appreciate having coffee on the front porch on Saturdays when its just my wife and I. That… does it for me.” Hello my faithful listeners, welcome to Episode #21! Thanks for sticking with me! I have so much good stuff in the pipeline! I am incredibly thankful that YOU are carving out a chunk of your time to spend with me today. Now, I need to warn you this episode is really intense and also one you will not be able to stop listening to. So, be prepared. Today we dive into my friend Michael Hackett's journey with cancer. If you live in Baton Rouge, you have seen Michael's smiling handsome face on billboards all over town in the past few years with the tagline, “We don't treat Cancer, We treat Michael.” Michael is incredible vulnerable about his cancer journey, about what he wished he had done before hand, about the process, and about what he takes away from this difficult journey. For my listeners who have cancer or who have fought it, or have someone close to them who has, my heart is with you. Michael's candor will draw you into his incredible story and I promise you'll walk away inspired, challenged, and likely need a few tissues as we dive deep into some of life's biggest questions and challenges. This conversation felt something similar to my talk with David Magee, episode number 1. I think anyone listening could hear the sincerity, the vulnerability, and the honesty of Michael, which makes it a story we can all connect to. No one is putting on a show here, this is just the raw truth. I hope you enjoyed this as much as I did, and that you now know that Michael is so much more than just the cancer guy. And, perhaps the biggest takeaway for me from this is the importance of having a great circle around you, to walk with you, through the good and the bad. The quote Michael said really rescinded with me and will be how we wrap this one up, “Shared joy is double joy. Shared sorrow is half sorrow.” Timeline:2:37- 4:30 Intro/Background5:00 “When did you first know there was a problem?”6:00: Start Cancer Story8:37 Bloody stool cannot be ignored any more11:00 Long walk the night before surgery, conversation about what goes wrong…12:00“The night before my surgery…she's such a strong beautiful person…”15:30 “I don't think I did this to myself… I'm not Googling anything, I'm just following my instructions… Physically I felt like a 1/10, but mentally spiritually emotionally I felt like a 10/10”17:00 “And that's the one thing I am proud of that I still do today.”19:15 “Can you put us in the chair for round 1 of Chemo?”27:00 Stopped Chemo due to C-Diff29:00 “What i went through was nothing, it was 7 months of my life, when you see a child, knowing what you are going through, knowing the pain and suffering you are going through…”33:37 Getting good progress Reports from Docs. “All I gotta do is get to the finish line?”35:00 “You ring the bell and people come to celebrate…”39:00 “Tell me a few ways this experience has changed you?” “I never realized how friendships and family… its just unbelievable, I have so many people literally in my phone I can call up and have a meaningful conversation with, I'm talking hundreds of people. "Depression is just a check engine light.""This is not the end of your story, this is literally the invitation to ultimately bring you back to yourself, to awaken... it's loving even though it's brutal."Ladies and gentlemen welcome back to the adventure cure. For today, episode #16, we will continue the conversation with my dear friend Ruthie Lindsey, as she teaches us various tools that you can use to fully and better love yourself. For many of us, we can be our worst critics. I know I have certainly often been to myself, which has lead me down paths of self loathing, jealousy, and more than anything, shame. “We shame the shit out of ourselves,” Ruthie will tell us in a few minutes, but we are so human. Ruthie's ability to love herself fully and completely has translated into an unending ability to selflessly love others that is truly intoxicating. It's something we all can learn from, but it starts with how we talk to ourselves. A quick reminder on who Ruthie is and why she's worth listening to. Ruthie Lindsey is an award winning published author, an incredibly sought after speaker, and has amassed a huge social media following because of her ability to speak the unspoken and walk with people through pain and healing. Ruthie also hosted an excellent podcast called Unspoken for several seasons with a former guest on his podcast, Miles Adcox, owner of Onsite. In case you didn't listen to last weeks episode I don't know much about Ruthies story, much of what she teaches stems from the painful recovery of a near death experience she had at age 17. She was in a terrible car accident that nearly killed her, breaking broke her neck, rupturing her spleen and collapsing her lungs. Miraculously she survived with an emergency spinal fusion, but a few years later due to this injury, incredibly debilitating pain crept into her body and wrecked her life again. This time it lasted years, training her to her bed in a daze of painkillers, depression, and self loathing. She eventually was able to wean herself off the meds, get out of bed, and start a new life with an entirely new identity. This conversation is about a few of the tools she used then and continues to use to find healing, truth, and to step into the fullest, most joyful. and most loving version of herself. Also, if you enjoyed episode #1 with David Magee, Ruthie is Davids little sister. After searching for his family for 30 years, it was Ruthie he found first, which created an incredibly rich, emotional and immediate connection.A few details on what to expect, Ruthie will be guiding us through various wars to embrace who we are and in turn to be able to fully love others. We will learn about things like Reparenting, being in touch with your body, and using words and writing things down to help us understand ourselves better. website: http://www.ruthielindsey.com/her book: http://www.ruthielindsey.com/bookOther's Ruthie References:Tara Brach: (R.A.I.N.) https://www.tarabrach.com/Father Richard Rohr: https://cac.org/about/our-teachers/richard-rohr/

Best selling author David Magee, formerly a columnist for Newsweek, a former daily newspaper and magazine publisher, and the author of many books about businesses and sports figures began to shift his focus when he wrote wrote an article for the front page of the local paper in 2016. This personal article ripped the bandage off a wound, to air out and share for a greater good and healing all around. It began with these 2 sentences: "A new freshman class started at Ole Miss this week and I wish I could tell them ALL this story. It's about my oldest son William, who was a freshman in 2008, he would gladly tell you himself if only he were alive." By the next morning the story had gone viral and read by millions of people not only coast to coast but all over the world!! The ripple affect of this article turned into waves of conversations, community and brainstorming about the why's re: drug overdoeses, substance misuse, addiction and mental health…evolving into tangible solutions with the opening of the first wellness center of it's kind on a college campus - The William Magee Center For Wellness. David decided to go deeper turning his focus inward, layers kept coming off and a lot of these layers were dark and uncomfortable yet he kept going. Peeling off layers of intergenerational trauma, addiction, loss and shame. Shedding these old personal heavy layers of responsibility eventually uncovered truth and lightness of self discovery and the joy out weighed the darkness of the past until they reached a personal and family core, and pages were made. He and his supportive family became fully vulnerable and discovered a bright heart center at that core and new found space for more light and love to hold and shine back out to the world. These pages and this journey of self discovery is now a best selling book: Dear William: A Father's Memoir of Addiction, Love and Recovery. Dear William began as a grassroots movement in order to push the healing message farther to those who can benefit. This has also branched into public speaking, Ted Talks, National News, round table discussions…the branches are limitless In my opinion there is a reason this book became a best seller in just a couple of weeks and book stores all over the country are hustling to keep it in stock. What David has done with this book is bust down the door of shame and free everyone that was locked behind it to share their own stories and to discuss topics normally considered taboo, weak, embarrassing or sordid. Free people to breathe….I am not alone…free people to make their OWN decisions…free people of peer pressure….free students to care about and help their peers…free us all to dump all of our, now uncorded, de-stigmatized shame, crap and laundry out in the open. We are all now free, chains cut weights lifted, able to move forward to discuss and sort through all this old uncomfortable stuff together and finally use it to problem solve. It frees my generation to stop the cycle of silence and walls and what our parents considered airing dirty laundry in public. W are free to come together as a community to create some solutions to foster compassion, healing and brainstorm about solutions. Thank you Magee family for sharing how to take tragedy, struggles and dark truths into light, strength and hope. I have had THE most profound, deep and beautiful conversations after sharing this book , I can't wait for you to have the same experience after reading and sharing https://www.daviddmagee.com/ https://www.squarebooks.com/book/9781953295682 https://magee.olemiss.edu/ https://www.cbs.com/shows/cbs-mornings/video/lmmx_SS55y_eHF9wJR3TV7u38etaSkYW/david-magee-s-new-memoir-dear-william-details-family-s-trauma-with-addiction-loss-and-rebuilding/ Guitar Music by Will Kimbrough

We are kicking off season two with a really incredible story, one that I actually learned about through an Instagram post! Today's guest is David Magee. He is the author of a dozen books, including How Toyota Became #1 and The John Deere Way. David is a columnist for Newsweek and former managing director for U.S. news at Newsweek. He is a sought after keynote speaker and has hosted a daily national cable television and radio program -- The David Magee Show, as well as having been a regular guest on CNBC and Fox Business. There is so much to David's life, but it was the story of him finding his birth family that caught my eye and what stole my heart was hearing David’s profound journey of finding himself along the way. His story is dynamic and full of unexpected twists and turns, and his heart an engaging and powerful example of what it looks like when you allow challenges and adversities to shape you into a compassionate, understanding and truly extraordinary soul. Our conversation is deep, meaningful, and full of hope. It's truly astonishing to hear all of the details that led him to locate his birth family, almost thirty years after he made the decision to start looking for them. There are so many incredible moments, including a courthouse clerk that shared his birth mother’s name over the telephone and a camp doctor who was actually his brother! You truly have to hear it to believe it! Although we only talk briefly about the loss of his beloved son William and the ways his life is still impacting the world for good, we end the show with a commitment to continue the conversation in an upcoming episode to hear more about William's life and the journey David and his entire family have been on in making William's legacy impact the world for generations to come. There’s something in the air when you enter the AT Community of Roan Mountain. Depending on the time of the year it could be the crispness of fall, or in the spring the famous Rhododendrons starting to bloom that catch people’s attention. However, that’s not what Doe River Hiker Rest owner, David Magee, is referring to. When you ask him, he says there is an energy to Roan Mountain unlike any other. David has seen growth occur in this community all due to AT hikers, and only sees more good things coming their way. Find out in this week’s podcast, A Place to Call Home, how David is trying to turn Roan Mountain, TN into a place where people come back to because of the amazing experiences this community offers them! #appalachiangtrailtn #ATTNPodcast #findyourtrial

At Risk Youth – Who are they really? William’s Story Join me, David Magee, Michael Julian, and Katy Bray for an open and honest round table discussion connected in 3 parts of the country and a variety of perspectives. This topic about the dangers of substance abuse is SO big it was difficult for me personally to start facilitating the conversation. I awkwardly just looked up at this mountain and took the first shaky step and the rest of the conversation just flowed with these brave, candid and beautiful individuals. This episode is intended to brainstorm by sharing personal issues and stories. I want to be very clear; this is NOT a platform for blame, shame or finger pointing. This is intended to be a safe place to share openly in order to problem solve. When I stumbled across a newspaper article spreading through my social media circles written by a fellow college classmate, it felt like a force had taken ahold of me and shook me to my core. I knew this force would not let me go until I contacted the author, David Magee, to ask if we could discuss his deeply personal story that was also so universal and so multi-faceted. It only took reading the first few lines of the article to make me feel like I could not breathe. His article was intended to warn university students of the dangers of binge and risky behavior and to let them know it does not have to be a right of passage when you enter college. He and his family made the brave decision to share their son’s story of an accidental fatal overdose in hopes it would resonate and help others. What he did with this story/article was bust down the door of shame and free everyone that was locked behind it to share their own stories and to discuss topics normally considered taboo or “dirty laundry”. Free people to breathe….I am not alone…free people to make their OWN decisions…free people of peer pressure….free students to care about and help their peers…free us all to dump all of our, now uncorded, shame, crap and dirty laundry out in the open. We are all now free to discuss and sort through all this old uncomfortable stuff together and finally use it to problem solve. Free to come together as a community to create some solutions to foster healing and brainstorm about prevention. William Magee was a 2012 Ole Miss graduate who was in the Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College and the Croft Institute for International Studies. William was remembered by everyone as the young man with the beautiful smile; kind, sweet, and popular – he seemed to have it all. He lettered in track and was named to the SEC academic honor roll. The 400 hurdles are considered by many to be one of the most difficult in sports, and William had the courage to walk on and do it in the SEC. If only we could see the dangers and unpredictability of life’s hurdles. If only we could see the suffering hidden behind his beautiful smile, the social anxiety, general anxiety and low self-esteem. William's story is the same story as when we were at Ole Miss in the 80's. It makes me wonder and almost have a survivor's guilt - why am I still alive - how come I got to live.... ? This story is still, as if not more, relevant as it was when I was in school - I have to say though I was seriously shocked and saddened. I felt like this was something I HAD to explore because for some strange reason the universe let me live. Unfortunately, Williams story is sadly becoming a common story. Young men in particular still seem uncomfortable discussing anxiety, depression and dark feelings and the opioid crisis has become a full-blown epidemic. Last year 115 Americans died every day from an accidental overdose and the rate of these deaths has risen 522% since 2002. At this point I don’t know anyone that has not been affected by this personally. “For Ole Miss freshmen: My son William’s story” By David Magee “A new freshman class started at Ole Miss this week and I wish I could tell them all this story. It’s about my oldest son, William, who was a freshman in 2008. He would gladly tell them himself, if only he were alive.” https://www.oxfordeagle.com/2016/08/28/my-son-williams-story-shared-to-help-others/ I was honored and humbled that William's family would let me interview David, William’s father, for my Podcast Grey Matters Now - let's change the world one difficult conversation at a time please! The hope and manifestation of positive change in just one year! Below – The William Magee Center For Wellness Education at Ole Miss. David Magee is the screenwriter of the fantastic movies Finding Neverland and Life of Pi. He's also working on the new Mary Poppins and Narnia films. I'm a nut for anything Peter Pan/Captain Hook related, so this talk with David is really fun. We get into J.M. Barrie's life during the creation of Peter Pan and how David did his research. We talk plenty of Captain Hook and how he fits into the story of both Peter Pan and Barrie's life. And we had to talk some Life of Pi too! It was a notoriously difficult book to adapt until David and Ang Lee got their hands on it. We'll dip our toes into Mary Poppins and Narnia too. Best-selling author and management guru Patrick Lencioni sits down with Ken backstage at Catalyst Atlanta to talk leadership from his new book The Advantage, and we also catch up with David Magee, award winning screenplay writer of the recently released feature film Life of Pi.
Based on the best-selling novel by Yann Martel, is a magical adventure story centering on Pi Patel, the precocious son of a zoo keeper. Dwellers in Pondicherry, India, the family decides to move to Canada, hitching a ride on a huge freighter. After a shipwreck, Pi finds himself adrift in the Pacific Ocean on a 26-foot lifeboat with a zebra, a hyena, an orangutan and a 450-pound Bengal tiger named Richard Parker, all fighting for survival. Writer David Magee talks about the challenges and rewards of adapting a sprawling, best seller into a powerful three-dimensional drama.
