In this episode, Dr. Schmidt brings together two dynamic voices from different stages of their careers—Jacqui Kozlowski, a dental student, and Stephanie Tilley, DMD, a general dentist with a broad range of experience providing clinical care and teaching new techniques. This candid conversation highlights the power of mentorship, collaboration, and resilience in shaping a brighter future for women in the field. Listen in as they explore how the landscape of dentistry has evolved, the opportunities and challenges women face, and the unique ways they connect to exchange ideas and offer support. Stephanie Flynn Tilley, DMD, is a graduate of the University of Alabama School of Dentistry and has undergone extensive training to bring her patients the highest level of care possible. Tilley is a native of Pensacola, Florida, and has been practicing dentistry in her hometown since 1998. She is a member of AGD as well as the American Dental Association, Florida Dental Association, Alabama Dental Association, Academy of Laser Dentistry, Oral Implantology and Academy of American Facial Esthetics. Jacqui Kozlowski, a third-year dental student at Midwestern University College of Dental Medicine-Illinois, is from Novi, Michigan, and holds a bachelor's degree in Human Biology from Michigan State University. She is actively involved in the American Student Dental Association as secretary of her local chapter, vice president of the CDMI Dental Student Council, and a liaison for the Executive Dental Council. A member of Delta Sigma Delta fraternity, Jacqui plans to volunteer at a dental clinic in Jamaica. After completing dental school, she hopes to join a reputable dental practice and aspires to one day own her own dental practice.
Alan interviews Dr. Thom Caspers, a former Seattle-area dentist who now teaches at Midwestern University College of Dental Medicine in Arizona. They discuss the early days of Dentaltown, the transition from private practice to academia, and the unique aspects of Midwestern's dental program, including its focus on the private practice model and comprehensive patient care. They also delve into the challenges and opportunities facing dental students today, including the impact of social media, rising tuition costs, and the evolving landscape of dental technology. Key Takeaways: Dentaltown's Influence: Dentaltown played a crucial role in shaping Thom and Alan's careers and connecting them with other dentists. Midwestern's Unique Model: Midwestern's dental program stands out for its private practice model, where students work in suites with experienced faculty, providing comprehensive care to patients. This approach fosters continuity of care, mentorship, and real-world experience. Competency-Based Education: Midwestern emphasizes competency-based education. This contrasts with traditional dental schools that often rely on a set number of procedures. Financial Realities: Dental students today face significant financial burdens due to rising tuition costs. While Midwestern offers some opportunities for loan forgiveness, many students are drawn to DSOs for their financial incentives. Social Media's Impact: Social media presents both challenges and opportunities for dental students. While it can provide valuable information and connections, it can also contribute to anxiety and unrealistic expectations. Technology in Dental Education: Midwestern embraces technology, offering students access to CAD/CAM systems for same-day dentistry, but significantly less emphasis on traditional lab work. The Changing Student: Thom observes that today's dental students are different from previous generations, with higher levels of anxiety and a preference for technology-driven learning. On this episode of The SavvyCast, my friend Dr. David Sender shares his insight as a resident at The Auburn University Veterinary School of Medicine into navigating the painful choice of euthanasia for pets. Who Is Dr. David Sender? Dr. Sender is a Chicago, Illinois native who completed his veterinary training at the University of Illinois. After his time there, he went to Colorado State where he completed a small animal rotating internship. He then went on to be a Clinical Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine at Midwestern University College of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Sender is now a resident at The Auburn University Veterinary School of Medicine. My Experience with Dr. Sender: As many of you all know, I lost my beloved buddy Cam in April of this year. His passing was unexpected and excruciatingly painful, though God in his kindness has blessed my family and me through support and love from our community. After a few days of frantic veterinary visits here in Birmingham, I made the decision to take Cam to the teaching hospital at Auburn University Vet School. This is one of the most advanced clinics in the United States for difficult cases in animals large and small. Here we met Dr. Sender, who gently and gracefully walked with us through our last few days with Cam. He cared for Cam in his last days, and eventually performed the euthanasia after we all came to the conclusion that this was the most loving thing to do.

This week on the Cone….. Dr. Andy Roark sits down with Dr. Ryane to discuss her research on communication challenges between veterinarians and dog/cat breeders. They get into the oddities of these relationships, the points of friction, and steps that can be taken to improve communication and build more effective relationships. Englar, DVM, DABVP (Canine and Feline Practice) graduated from Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2008. She practiced as an associate veterinarian in companion animal practice before transitioning into the educational circuit as an advocate for pre-clinical training in primary care. She debuted in academia as a Clinical Instructor of the Community Practice Service at Cornell University's Hospital for Animals. She then transitioned into the role of Assistant Professor as founding faculty at Midwestern University College of Veterinary Medicine. While at Midwestern University, she had the opportunity to teach the inaugural Class of 2018, the Class of 2019, and the Class of 2020. While training these remarkable young professionals, Dr. Englar became a Diplomat of the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners (ABVP). She then joined the faculty at Kansas State University between May 2017 and January 2020 to launch the Clinical Skills curriculum. In February 2020, Dr. Englar reprised her role of founding faculty when she returned “home” to Tucson to join the University of Arizona College of Veterinary Medicine. As a dual appointment Associate Professor and the Director of Veterinary Skills Development, Dr. Englar currently leads the Clinical and Professional Skills curriculum. In her current role, she can design and debut a novel series of standardized client encounters for student training in clinical communication. She can also further her research as to how clinical communication drives relationship-centered care. Dr. Englar is passionate about advancing education for generalists by thinking outside of the box to develop new course materials for the hands-on learner. This labor of love is preceded by four texts that collectively provide students and clinicians alike with functional, relatable, and practice-friendly tools for success: Performing the Small Animal Physical Examination (John Wiley & Sons, Inc., 2017) Writing Skills for Veterinarians (5M Publishing, Ltd., 2019) Common Clinical Presentations in Dogs and Cats (John Wiley & Sons, Inc., 2019) A Guide to Oral Communication in Veterinary Medicine (5M Publishing, Ltd., 2020) Dr. Englar's students fuel her desire to create. They inspire her to develop the tools that they need to succeed in clinical practice. If the goal of educators, as they are tasked by the accrediting bodies, is to create “Day-One”, so-called “Practice-Ready” veterinarians, then this text and her others complement the mission. When Dr. Englar is not teaching or advancing primary care, she trains in the art of ballroom dancing and competes nationally with her instructor, Lowell E. Fox.

In this BoomCloud mini series we talk about the importance in marketing. Most practices start membership programs and do nothing to market and promote their program. Marketing is essential to get a ROI (return on investment) from your program. About Kiera Starting out as an assistant in California, Kiera found her niche and knew she connected well with patients, doctors and staff. With this knowledge, Kiera advanced her career to working front office, followed by working at Midwestern University College of Dental Medicine for three years, then helping a Midwestern University graduate start her own practices straight out of dental school, to finally opening her own company to help several doctors reach their highest potential. Knowing firsthand what it takes to be an assistant, front office, office manager, dental student, and owning and buying dental practices, Kiera has a wealth of knowledge and experience that she will bring to you and your office in a fun, practical way that delivers impressive results time and time again. https://www.kierasdentalconsulting.com About Jordon Jordon Comstock has been in the dental industry for over 10 Years.
