Welcome to part 2 of 3 in the 2024 Pharmacist Authors Series! The goal of the series is to inspire you to write your first book. Dr. Helen Sairany is my guest. She is an expert on trauma. As we discuss her book, The We you Don't See: Understanding the Long Shadows of Trauma, she shares the following: Her background as a trauma survivor Why she wrote The We you Don't See: Understanding the Long Shadows of Trauma What the book is about Her target audience When to read the book What she wants you to do with the information [after you read the last page] Where you can buy the book Advice for pharmacist authors During our interview, Helen also reads two excerpts from the book. Bio - written by Helen Sairany, PharmD (July 2024) As a 7-year-old Kurdish child in Iraq, a country torn by war and conflict, I was spotted by a U.S. Marine deployed to my country with a grenade in my hand, who saved my life by exchanging the grenade for a bag of candy. He later escorted my family and I out of war to seek refuge in the U.S. Because of my turbulent childhood, I was diagnosed with complex PTSD in 2013. Thus, I aspire to live in a world where the vast majority are trauma-informed, feel psychologically safe and valued for the work they put out, and return home fulfilled. Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic began, I have been open about my dormant childhood trauma. I have been traveling worldwide to give talks on topics such as trauma-informed care, leadership, and the workforce. After having traveled to more than 100 countries worldwide, I developed an appreciation for the diverse mix of cultures, people, and traditions. My interest in trauma stems from personal experiences of living through wars, navigating complex relationships, and continually learning what it means to be human. In this episode of The Happy PharmD podcast, I'm thrilled to have Corey Jenks as we dive into the heartfelt and often humorous world of modern fatherhood. Corey is not your average pharmacist; he's a pioneer in applying comedy to healthcare, helping professionals break free from the conventional and embrace empathy and adaptability in patient care. Corey founded ImprovRx, where he blends improv comedy with evidence-based practices to transform how healthcare teams communicate and connect with patients. With over a decade of experience at Southern Arizona VA Healthcare System and currently at Optum as a Clinical Pharmacist, Corey brings a wealth of insights into healthcare management and team dynamics. Beyond his career, Corey is a devoted dad, an author, and a comedian. His approach isn't just about managing healthcare; it's about nurturing teams to rediscover their passion and improve patient outcomes through humor and human connection. We'll delve into Corey's journey, his insights on balancing work and fatherhood, and his latest projects, including his newly released book. Whether you're a seasoned dad, a new parent navigating the early years, or someone simply curious about family dynamics, you've come to the right place. Here are the highlights of my conversation with Corey: 07:59 - The guilt and shame parents often feel in handling their children, reflecting on personal experiences and societal pressures. 09:14 - How millennials may feel pressure to present only the positive aspects of their lives on social media, leading to feelings of guilt and shame. 11:11 - The importance of dads being present and engaged with their children, emphasizing the need for self-care and providing for their families. 15:43 - The humorous approach to parenthood and life in general, finding laughter in the absurdity of experiences. 19:22 - The importance of talking to children about culture, hate, and racism, and acknowledging one's own biases in order to have open conversations about these topics. 20:22 - The challenges and experiences of being a newish dad, including handling difficult conversations with children about mortality and accepting imperfection in fatherhood. 32:08 - The importance of accepting and nurturing children's individual interests and talents rather than forcing them to conform to parental expectations. Steve Leuck, PharmD Bio (June 2024) After graduating University of the Pacific school of pharmacy in 1987, Steve began his practice in a local community hospital pharmacy where he stayed for the 8 years. For the following 18 months, Steve completed a 28-day drug and alcohol treatment program, worked through licensing stipulations with the board of pharmacy, and attended a yearlong course of study to become a certified addiction counselor. Steve successfully transitioned back to pharmacy where he worked the next 25 years in a clinic pharmacy for a local community hospital. During this time, Steve developed and implemented a bedside education and meds-to-bed program in order to help educate patients as well as assure they acquired their new medications upon discharge from the hospital. Throughout this time, Steve founded and developed AudibleRx; an internet-based patient medication education platform designed specifically for those challenged with literacy or visual impairment. In 2023, AudibleRx was donated to a medical information based non-profit organization. After nearly 33 years of practice with the same institution, Steve retired and took a half-time position for another hospital which allows him time to travel with his wife, ride his bike through the Santa Cruz mountains, and write. In this episode, Sarah has a spontaneous, totally improvised, not at all planned conversation with pharmacist and improv comedian, Cory Jenks. Dr Jenks earned his Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of South Carolina in 2011. He is an ambulatory care clinical pharmacy specialist, where he tries to talk people into healthy lifestyle choices instead of taking medications, which seems antithetical, but it all makes sense. Cory just celebrated his tenth improvaversary! YES, he coaches, teaches and performs improv, AND he also uses the principles of improv to teach healthcare professionals how to apply the valuable skills of improv to create a more adaptable, empathetic and humanizing healthcare experience. YES, AND also, he wrote a book about this very subject called Permission to Care. He is also a husband and dad of three kids under five and ten chickens. This episode was so much fun and Sarah's only regret is that we didn't talk about the chickens. Up first in my Summer 2023 Pharmacist Authors Series is Salam Kabbani, PharmD. She wrote COVID Long-Hauler: My Life Since COVID and narrated the audiobook. A sample of her audiobook is included at the end of the episode. Bio Salam Kabbani, PharmD is an infectious diseases pharmacy specialist at Olathe Medical Center in the greater Kansas City area. Her experience with long-COVID disability motivated her to write a memoir about her experiences so she can spread empathy by sharing her honest human experience. She is very passionate about advocating for patients and is currently working on a new series highlighting long-COVID symptoms and different strategies to mitigate them. Outside of pharmacy she is an avid reader and shares book recommendations on her Bookstagram and blog. She loves to be outdoors and takes every opportunity she can to go hiking when her health permits. She works part-time at Club Pilates and considers this her “fun job”, and she truly believes that reformer pilates has helped recover some of her strength after long-COVID. She lives with her cat Luna and feels grateful for every experience life has to offer her. She loves connecting with people, and especially long-haulers, and would love to hear your stories, answer any questions, or just chat through any of the links below! Visit Global Bookshelves International (publisher), Amazon, or Barnes and Noble to purchase your printed copy today! The audiobook is available through Audible and iTunes. I listened to the audiobook, and I enjoyed it! ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ During the second half of our interview, Salam talked about her experience narrating her audiobook. Because it's a memoir, she wanted to narrate it herself. According to Salam, it was a challenge, but she's glad she did it. Her goal was to release the print and audiobook versions at the same time, but the print version was first to market. Her 3 hour audiobook took 6 hours of recording time (not all in one day). Salam's advice to other pharmacist authors who want to narrate their own audiobook: Prepare: Practice, hydrate, and allow plenty of time to record. Pick your most energetic/refreshed time of the day to record. (Avoid recording after your work day.) Pick a studio you're comfortable with. Make sure you can sit comfortably and place your reading materials in front of you. Find an engineer who is experienced with recording, editing, and producing audio files to the specifications you need. Cautionary tale: The first engineer Salam worked with recorded the entire book, but he did not finalize her files to specs; he was inexperienced. Salam needed help from a second audio engineer - Julie Walthers from Whole Story Studio. With Julie's help, Salam's files passed ACX specs, and publishing the audiobook went smoothly. Can you help the author out? If you know of a book group or support group who might like COVID Long Hauler: My Life Since COVID, recommend it to them. They could read it and have a discussion. If you know of a podcast that could interview Salam about her book, please nominate her to the host or let Salam know about the podcast. LinkedIn messages work well. Today's episode includes a recap of my weekend at the Ohio Pharmacist Association (OPA) Annual Conference April 1-3, 2022, and brief interviews with Ohio pharmacists Emlah Tubuo, PharmD and Greg Kramp, PharmD. Disclaimer. I am an OPA Member, but I do not work for The Ohio Pharmacists Association. The opinions mentioned in this podcast episode are my own and not necessarily those of OPA. Also, I am not being compensated for any content in this podcast episode. This episode has 4 parts. In the first part, I'll give a recap from the sessions I attended: session title and speaker(s) name(s), plus two take-aways. I attended 11 sessions and earned 16 hours of CE. Ten sessions were 90 minutes long. One was only 60 minutes long. There were multiple offerings for each time slot, and it was hard to pick just one to attend. The second part is my interview with Emlah Tubuo, PharmD. The third part is my interview with Greg Kramp, PharmD. The fourth and final part of this episode will be a few stories about what went wrong back home while I was gone. If you're a parent of teenagers, you're going to groan. It has to do with my younger son missing the ACT on Saturday, April 2, and the death of the only houseplant I own. Thank you for listening to The Pharmacist's Voice Podcast Episode 143! The house did not burn down, and my husband and both kids were alive when I got home. What went wrong? My son Derrick missed the ACT because he forgot about it. My only houseplant died a horrible death by wind, rain, and cold temps. Our trash ended up in our recycling toter and the recyclables ended up in the trash toter. I left March 31, and no one flipped the calendars in the house to April. No one printed the new lunch calendar for April either. When my family went to church, no one brought the Noisy Change Offering, which is only collected the first Sunday of the month. My son had to loan my husband cash so we could contribute toward the charity of the month. My husband also forgot to pick his prescriptions up at the pharmacy on Saturday. The pharmacy is closed Sunday. Better luck next time, boys! Please laugh. I know I did. That's life, and life can be messy!

Cory will share how he supports patients diet and lifestyle changes to help them get off medications and his upcoming book where he teaches health care providers how to use humor and empathy with patients.
On this week's episode of “Authors Who Lead,” I talk to Cory Jenks about his journey of writing his book and combining two different types of careers into something new.
Dr. Cory Jenks earned his PharmD from the University of South Carolina in 2011 and completed a PGY1 residency at the Southern Arizona VA Healthcare System in 2012. His past pharmacy experience has included time as a retail pharmacist, outpatient clinical pharmacist, and inpatient clinical pharmacist. Currently, he practices as an Ambulatory Care Clinical Pharmacy Specialist where he applies his passion for lifestyle interventions in the management of chronic disease. Cory is also an accomplished improv comedian, having started on his comedy journey in 2013. Since then, Cory has coached, taught, and performed improv for thousands of people. Today, Cory travels the country (or at least Zooms around) teaching other healthcare professionals how to apply the valuable skills of improv comedy to create a more adaptable, empathetic, and humanizing healthcare experience. When not working or performing improv, Cory enjoys playing racquetball, basketball and golf, exploring the science of disease management through lifestyle, and is currently earning his Master’s Degree in “Dad Jokes” with the help of his two sons Jacob and Henry. Website and Social Media Links Website: www.coryjenks.com Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/cory-jenks-3ba17314/ https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=12616017 instagram @pharmacomedian twitter: @coryjenkspharmd Email: cory@improvrx.com Highlights from the interview Cory uses his voice as a pharmacist and as an improv comedian. He works full-time in an ambulatory care setting under collaborative practice agreements. He manages a number of chronic disease states, including hypertension, diabetes, and high cholesterol. Cory does improv comedy on-stage. He also helps other healthcare providers learn the skills of improv to become more adaptable, empathetic, and create a humanizing health experience. Healthcare providers can be robotic and unsympathetic toward patients, and when unexpected situations arise, healthcare professionals might struggle. Improv helps healthcare professionals create a better experience for patients; it helps them connect with patients. Sometimes, improv helps patients laugh. Other times, improv helps healthcare professionals listen and communicate better. It even helps transfer knowledge to patients in a way they understand, care about, and act on. What’s the “Yes, and…” part of doing improv in healthcare? “Yes, and” is the one big rule of improv. Those two words form the basis of improv comedy. It means, “To agree and build together.” You can’t, “Yes, and…” everything in healthcare. When the default answer is typically, “No,” improv helps healthcare professionals say, “Yes, and…” We find reasons to help when we say, “Yes.” Patients feel seen, heard, and understood as a result. For conflict resolution, coming to agreements is helpful. “I agree that this situation isn’t ideal, but let’s try to work together…”. Improv gives healthcare professionals another way to approach a problem, but the right mindset is needed. Improv has rules, but within the rules, anything can happen. You do improv every time you interact with a patient. The question is, “How well do you do it?” Improv gives you the skills to make a more enjoyable experience, which will improve outcomes. Cory says there are no mistakes in improv. There are only gifts. We can choose to make what is given to us into a gift. We did some improv with 3 common situations community practice (retail) pharmacists encounter. “This isn’t covered by your insurance.” “We need to call the prescriber to change the medication.” “The drug is out of stock.” Improv can help with “Chatty Cathys” and “Gabby Garys” too. Accept their reality (that they want to talk to you), but also acknowledge your reality as a pharmacist. “I want to hear you, but I also have 4 other people waiting. Give me the highlights. I don’t want you to feel ignored, but I am busy.” You’re not supposed to talk about what you’re doing while you’re doing it. If you’re making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, don’t talk about making the sandwich while you’re making the sandwich! Talk to the other person about something else while you’re doing something routine. Cory’s business ImprovRX offers public speaking, curriculum development consulting, and workshops. Visit www.coryjenks.com. Cory delivers inspiring, improv-based keynote addresses. He is available to help pharmacy schools (and other health professions) include improv in their curriculum. During the pandemic, Cory’s improv workshops take place via Zoom. He talks to the participants, plays games, and teaches evidence-based improv comedy. What’s “evidence-based improv comedy?” Applying improv comedy to healthcare situations. Cory shares why improv is a useful tool in healthcare. There is medical literature showing the utility of role play and improv in making healthcare professionals better communicators and empathizers. Workshop participants love playing games! It’s something that is not graded. There are no wrong answers. It’s ok to try new things in workshops. In comparison, trying improv on-the-job when you’re inexperienced may have consequences (patients may question your sincerity). Cory’s improv workshops help participants try new things in a zero-pressure setting. He gets people out of their comfort zone, but they are happy about it even though they are challenging themselves. Pharmacists can earn CE credit through Cory’s workshops! It’s the most fun CE you’ll ever do!
