POPULARITY
In this episode, we talk about the 2025 Harley-Davidson Cruiser lineup. I had the opportunity to attend the press event in Austin, Texas, and ride these new cruisers. Keep in mind I only got a few hours with these bikes, but I give you my impressions of the six cruisers that were upgraded. All six received the Milwaukee-8 117 engine and rider safety enhancements. SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE Test Ride Impressions Street Bob 117: A Lightweight & Agile Cruiser Ideal for shorter riders: At 5'8", I found the ergonomics to be comfortable with mid-controls and a well-positioned handlebar. Analog Speedometer with Digital Readout: Displays essential ride data, including RPMs, fuel range, and tire pressure monitoring. Torque & Power: The Classic variant of the Milwaukee-Eight 117 delivers 98 horsepower and 120 lb-ft of torque, making it a punchy yet easy-to-handle ride. Breakout 117: A Bold & Stylish Power Cruiser Fat rear tire: While it adds to the aggressive look, it makes handling a bit heavier, especially in corners. Forward Controls & More Vibration: Riders experience more road feedback through handlebars and pegs. Custom Variant Power: 104 horsepower and 126 lb-ft of torque, with a more rev-happy powerband. Single Front Brake Setup: Works well but lacks the stopping power of dual-disc setups. Fat Boy 117: Classic Comfort & Power More Comfortable for 5'8" Riders: The handlebar placement is better than the Breakout, allowing a more relaxed posture. Floorboards Instead of Pegs: Adds comfort for long-distance cruising. Lean Angle Considerations: 25.6-degree lean angle limits aggressive cornering but suits the bike's cruising nature. Low Rider ST & Low Rider S: Performance-Oriented Cruisers High Output Variant: 114 horsepower and 128 lb-ft of torque, delivering a more aggressive ride. Inverted Front Forks: Improve handling and front-end stability. Low Rider ST vs. S: ST: Features a club-style fixed fairing and saddlebags for light touring. S: A more stripped-down, performance-driven variant. Ergonomics: At 5'8", I found the bars well-placed and mid-controls comfortable, but longer trips might benefit from forward controls. Heritage Classic: The Underrated Tourer Classic Styling: Traditional Harley look with leather saddlebags and a detachable windshield. Most Comfortable Seat in the Cruiser Lineup: Ideal for long rides. Perfect for Touring: Though classified as a cruiser, it's a mid-level touring bike with great wind protection and relaxed ergonomics. CHECK OUT OUR HUNDREDS OF FREE HELPFUL VIDEOS ON OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL AND SUBSCRIBE! Safety & Rider Aids Advanced Rider Safety Enhancements All 2025 Harley-Davidson cruisers come with modern rider safety aids: Cornering & Straight-Line ABS & Traction Control ABS (Anti-Lock Braking System) Drag-Torque Slip Control I had the chance to test these features in controlled conditions, and they proved highly effective in preventing full loss of traction. Upgraded Handlebar Controls Cruise Control Now Standard across all cruiser models. Refined Switch Housings: Mode selection, turn signals, and traction control toggles are more intuitive. Cable Clutch vs. Hydraulic Clutch Harley continues to use cable-operated clutches, which require periodic adjustments. While functional, I strongly prefer the consistency of a hydraulic system, which would be a welcome upgrade in future models. Final Thoughts: Which 2025 Harley Cruiser is Right for You? Best for Performance Riders: Low Rider ST / Low Rider S If you prioritize aggressive handling, power, and sportier ergonomics, these models are for you. Best for Classic Cruiser Fans With Windshield: Heritage Classic If comfort, traditional styling, and a versatile ride are your priorities, this is an excellent choice. Best for Aggressive Styling & Chopper Look: Breakout 117 If you want bold styling with a fat rear tire and strong acceleration, the Breakout is a head-turner. Best Entry-Level Cruiser: Street Bob 117 A lightweight, easy-handling bike with great ergonomics for shorter riders. Best for All-Day Comfort Without A Windshield: Fat Boy 117 With its plush seat and floorboards, the Fat Boy is perfect for relaxed cruising. Conclusion After two full days of testing the 2025 Harley-Davidson cruiser lineup, it's clear that each model caters to different riding styles. Whether you're looking for a performance machine, a laid-back cruiser, or something in between, Harley's 2025 lineup has something for everyone. Official Website: https://www.lawabidingbiker.com I recently traveled to Monterey, CA to test ride and review the new 2023 Harley-Davidson CVO Street Glide and Road Glide. There is way more than meets the eye and these motorcycles are completely redesigned, both aesthetically and in performance. Lurch and I break down all the specs of the Harley-Davidson 2023 CVOs. These 2023 Harley CVOs have a brand new Milwaukee-Eight 121 ci VVT (variable valve timing) engine, redesigned fairings, controls, handlebars, intake tract, air intake, water-cooled heads, radiator, electric fan, 12.3" infotainment system, new front and rear Showa suspension with preload and rebound damping adjustments, new radial-mounted 4-piston Brembo brakes, larger brake rotors, new wheels, LED lighting, and new storage, just to name a few things. I was able to watch the King of the Baggers races at Laguna Seca. It was awesome to witness the sound of the big V-twin engines screaming by. Official Website: https://www.lawabidingbiker.com On January 18, 2023, the Harley-Davidson New 2023 Models were released. This included seven anniversary models, two new models, and the return of one model. In this episode, we wrapped up everything we learned and put it into a nice package for you. See our video on the topic! Anniversary Models The first six of the seven total anniversary models share a unique paint scheme described as Heirloom Red with a Midnight Crimson Fade and highlighted powertrain components. These models will have oxblood-colored inserts on the seats. And, the Anniversary models sharing this paint scheme are the Ultra Limited, Tri Glide Ultra, Street Glide Special, Road Glide Special, Fat Boy, and Heritage Classic. SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE The seventh Anniversary Model is the CVO Road Glide Limited, being the only anniversary model with the larger 117 Cubic Inch M8 engine. Its paint is a bit different and can be described as Anniversary Black and Midnight Crimson fade. And when viewed in the sun there is a red highlight to the black. A subdued eagle split up between the fairing, tank, and bags. Generally speaking, only about 3,000 to 1100 of each anniversary model will be released and they'll all have serialized consoles. CHECK OUT OUR HUNDREDS OF FREE HELPFUL VIDEOS ON OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL AND SUBSCRIBE! NEW MODELS The Breakout is returning to the lineup with that beautiful Milwaukee-Eight 117 V-Twin engine. This bike will have a very wide rear tire, coming in at 240mm, a 5-gallon gas tank, and a 36-degree front rake, which makes it a long, low, wide, modern cruiser. The Nightster Special is the next new model for 2023. What's so “Special” about this new Nightster? To start, it has a passenger pillion and footpegs to allow two-up riding. The handlebars and risers move the bars up and back for a more commanding rider position. It has a four-inch round TFT display, replacing the analog speedometer and segmented LCD indicators, allowing for BlueTooth connectivity and navigation. The Nightster Special is coming standard with cruise control, USB charging port, and you can add heated grips. This new model is going to be a surprise for some. And for many out there, it is a long time coming. It is the all-new Road Glide 3 Trike. I'm going to say right up front that even if you've never been interested in trikes, this one is sure to turn your head a bit. Many riders have requested a Road Gide trike for years now and it looks like Harley made it happen. A lot of engineering went into making the first Harley trike with a frame-mounted fairing including things like the placement of the fairing to accommodate the long rake and steering dampening of the trike. Official Website: https://www.lawabidingbiker.com We recently did an S&S 465 gear cam & oil pump upgrade on Popeye's 2019 Harley Street Glide special with the 114 ci Milwaukee Eight engine. We filmed this project in detail over several days. That detailed tutorial video will eventually be released on this YouTube Channel. In this episode, Lurch and I talk about the project and also give our opinions and thoughts on the bike's performance after installation. Is it worth it? We also talk about tuning the engine to the new cam. SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE There are many cam manufacturers out there, and there are just as many cam options. After talking with some of our Patron Members in the members-only Law Abiding Biker Facebook Group, Popeye decided to go with the S&S gear drive 465 gear torque cam. We have no affiliation with S&S, but we definitely recommend them. You can get the kit Popeye used HERE. A torque cam offers on-demand throttle response from low to mid RPM at cruising speed. A power cam targets high RPM, wide-open throttle response that keeps pulling right up to the redline. CHECK OUT OUR HUNDREDS OF FREE HELPFUL VIDEOS ON OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL AND SUBSCRIBE! You can go with a chain-driven cam or a gear-driven cam. You need to measure your pinion shaft runout to make sure it's within specifications for a gear-driven cam. The benefit of a gear-driven cam is you eliminate the chain and chain tensioner. We tuned Popeye's bike with the Vance and Hines FP3 and it runs like a raped ape. Tuning was easy with the FP3. We selected the intake, cam, and exhaust for Popeye's bike and flashed it. After flashing the "canned" map, we ran an auto-tune session with really dialed things in. Due to Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) findings and Federal Trade Commission (FTC) settlements, the FP3 may soon become a thing of the past. We grabbed up a bunch of FP3s for you guys. Official Website: https://www.lawabidingbiker.com I recently test rode and reviewed the new Harley-Davidson 2022 Street Glide ST. Harley shipped me the bike and let me have it for 30 days so I was able to really evaluate it. This bike was a dream to ride and overall performed very well. This bike comes with the Milwaukee-Eight 117 ci air/oil cooled V-Twin engine with a heavy breather, making around 106 horsepower and 126 ft. lbs. of torque. That was apparent when I got into the power band at around 3500 rpm. The bike has plenty of get up and go and you can easily pass and get around slower traffic. This bike was inspired by the King of the Baggers series and you should really check it out if you haven't. This ST sits an inch higher than a Harley Street Glide Special model, which makes it the same height as models such as the Ultra Limited. This provides for more lean angle on the ST model and I found that to be the case during my testing. SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE Harley was able to shave 13 lbs off the Street Glide ST in comparison to a Street Glide Special model, making the ST weigh in at around 814 lbs in operating condition. Some of the weight savings are because the Harley Street Glide ST only comes with a solo seat and has no passenger pegs but you can add both after purchase. The saddlebags are also squared off and don't contour the mufflers like on the special models. Law Abiding Biker Podcast Episode #295: The Harley Street & Road Glide ST-Guests Paul James, Bjorn Shuster, and Eric Buckhouse of Harley-Davidson The Street Glide ST has a 19-inch front tire and 18-inch rear tire, 49 mm dual bending valve front forks, premium standard height (13 inch) hand-adjustable rear suspension, dual front and single disc rear brakes, 6 speed transmission, Boom Box GTS Infotainment System, and 6 gallon fuel tank. The ST gets 41 mpg in premium operating conditions. CHECK OUT OUR HUNDREDS OF FREE HELPFUL VIDEOS ON OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL AND SUBSCRIBE! The Harley Street Glide ST is a great foundation if you are going to build it out as more of a hot rod. It was designed for weight, power, and performance and for it to be faster, more nimble, and have more lean angle. And, for the first time you get that CVO power train in a non-CVO bike The ST is really a blank canvas for performance parts and you could easily make the Milwaukee Eight 117 ci engine a 131 ci engine with a stage four kit. There are plenty of OEM Harley performance parts for the Street Glide ST to include Ohlins suspension. And as always, you'll get an honest review on this website and on our YouTube Channel. Yes, Harley loaned me the bike but in no way was I paid for this review and Harley has never told me what or what I cannot say or I simply would not do these reviews. NEW FREE VIDEO RELEASED: A Real World Harley Street Glide ST Ride and Review Pros: I really liked the stock stereo system with the Boom Box GTS Infotainment System with two-way speakers and it was pretty loud and clear, even when traveling at freeway speeds with a full-face helmet. During the time we had the ST we did a Boss Audio Stereo/Amp Kit install on another bike and tested it against the stock Harley system. Of course, the Boss Audio system was much louder. I like that the Harley Street Glide ST sits an inch higher for that extra lean angle and I really liked the look of the differing front fender. I am 5'-08" tall and the bike fit me fine and I was flat footed when stopped with plenty of bend in my knees. The stock seat was pretty comfortable and has a nice curve up in the back, keeping you in the saddle when rolling the throttle and giving some lower back support. But, if I was long distance touring I'd replace the seat. The stock suspension performed very well, even when on a gravel road with potholes. Cons: The Boom Box Infotainment System does not come with a WHIM (Wireless Headset Interface Module) out of the factory. The WHIM allows you to have Bluetooth headset connectivity with the Boom Box while using a Harley branded Sena wireless headset. You need this to activate both Apple Car Play and Android Auto. You can also use a Harley branded 7 pin wired headset instead. If you want any wireless headset functionality though, you'll have to add a WHIM during or after your purchase. I think that all Harley's with the Boom Box should come stock with the WHIM like the CVO models do. The Harley Street Glide ST comes with a LED headlight and taillight but the front and rear signals are still halogens. Lurch is 6'-4" tall and also test rode this bike. He reported that his shin was up against the heavy breather and that he'd have to change that out immediately with a lower profile air intake. He'd also move the floorboards forward, install an extended brake pedal, and install taller handlebars. Final Thoughts: Really, the question is whether you spend the extra $2,500 on the Harley Street Glide ST or save it by buying a Street Glide Special. I'd say that if you are really looking to have a hot rod of a bike, add many performance parts, and really push it in the corners then the ST should be your choice. If you're looking to do more relaxed riding, tour long distances, and maybe have a passenger, the Street Glide Special is all set up for that upon purchase with a passenger seat and pegs and is $2,500 less. But, it does have the smaller Milwaukee-Eight 114 ci engine with a few less horsepower and overall torque. It's still a great engine and has plenty of power for most. With that said, make no mistake about it, the Harley Street Glide ST would be awesome too for long distance touring if you set it up with a passenger seat and pegs. Overall, I can say that you will not be disappointed if you buy the Harley Street Glide ST and it was a dream to ride. Sponsor-Ciro 3D CLICK HERE! I'm going to give you a real-world biker review of the new 2022 Harley-Davidson Low Rider ST. Oh, and in case you're new to Law Abidin Biker, I'm a full-time Police Motorcycle Officer and Instructor. Additionally, I have multiple bikes and put on many miles off duty on both street and off-road adventure rides. SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE Now, I actually own a 2016 Dyna Low Rider S and after that year it was moved to the Softail frame. My 2016 has the Screamin' Eagle Twin Cam 110 ci engine and it is a ripper and so fun to ride. I looked forward to how the new 2022 Low Rider ST would handle and feel like with the Milwaukee-Eight 117 cubic inch engine. I learned many things about the Low Rider ST from the Harley-Davidson Reps, so I think we should talk about where the Low Rider ST spawned from. You see, in recent years Harley has been paying much attention to the ever-changing demographics of Harley riders. Harley spotted a trend and was seeing riders, especially in Southern California, tweaking the Low Rider S by Increasing engine displacement, changing suspension, adding bags, and even fairings, just to name a few. Armed with that information Harley-Davidson set out to create a base model bike that was all of the aforementioned things, but yet came that way out of the box so to speak. Thus, the Low Rider ST was born and came into existence with special care taken as to how it looked and rode. The overall design was inspired by the iconic 80's FXRT. CHECK OUT OUR HUNDREDS OF FREE HELPFUL VIDEOS ON OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL AND SUBSCRIBE! I reviewed the Low Rider ST from the perspective of the average everyday biker out there and I'll tell you what you actually need to know about the bike, which has caused much stir and grabbed a lot of attention within the motorcycle community There are so many pre-orders that so this bike hardly ever makes it to the dealership floors. The 2022 Low Rider ST is super fast and nimble. I really enjoyed dragging the footpegs through the twisties. I liked the fairing and the vents it had in it. The fairing created a wind tunnel around me and minimized buffeting. The Low Rider ST is capable of touring, but you can easily remove the bags to give it a stripped-down look while riding around town. NEW FREE VIDEO RELEASED: A Sport Touring Dream? 2022 Harley Davidson Low Rider ST Test Ride & Review There were a few negatives I found, and admittedly they are a bit nit-picky. First, the right saddlebag is shorter than the left to accommodate the dual exhaust. In my opinion, it aesthetically detracts from the look of the bike from the rear. This issue would not keep me from buying this bike though. Second, as a touring bike, I think the Low Rider ST should come from the factory with some sort of crash bars. There are crash bars available from Harley-Davidson. Sponsor-Ciro 3D CLICK HERE! Official website: https://www.lawabidingbiker.com Part 2 of 2: On January 26, 2022, Harley released a video launch of the new 2022 model line-up. And I'm super glad this is becoming the norm for the company as they used to only do new model release events for dealership personnel. And that never made any sense to me. In the 2022 model release video CEO Jochen Zeitz says, "In these unprecedented times, we were inspired by you, our passionate community. It is your passion that fuels Harley-Davidson and pushes us to continue leading our industry through innovation and evolution but staying true to who we are and what we stand for." It seems Harley is listening to its customers and that's good news for riders. SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE In this episode, we go over all the 2022 models, not just the new releases. We do comparisons between models, so you can decide what bike may be best for you. The Harley model categories are sport, cruiser, adventure touring, Grand American Touring, and Trike. Additionally, on the Harley website, you can view and purchase pre-owned, certified pre-owned motorcycles, and you can also sell/trade your Harley. Of course, some of the big news is the new Street Glide and Road Glide ST models. These bikes are coming with the Milwaukee-Eight 117" power train with a heavy breather and specially tuned to the exhaust system. These ST models are designed for weight, power, and performance. They got rid of the two-up seat, made it faster, more nimble, gave it a better lean angle, and raised the height. And of course, there is an entire collection of add-on parts for the ST models called the "Performance Bagger Trim Kit". The other big announcement was the release of the Low Rider ST, but they also kept the regular Low Rider S in the line-up. The Low Rider S and ST have been bumped up to the Milwaukee-Eight 117 powertrain now, which puts out 125 ft-lbs. of torque. And they also changed the suspension and raised these bikes a little to give them more of a lean angle. The Low Rider S has a small fairing while the ST has a larger frame-mounted fairing and it's loosely modeled off the iconic 80's FXRT. The ST has removable hard saddlebags and is a lightweight powerful touring bagger in my opinion. CHECK OUT OUR HUNDREDS OF FREE HELPFUL VIDEOS ON OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL AND SUBSCRIBE! We give our thoughts and opinions about the new Electra Glide Revival and the overall Icons Collection Harley has introduced. We certainly all agree that it's a specialty motorcycle and will only appeal to a small segment of the market. Maybe this collection is a way to revive the rich history of Harley-Davidson and through social media posts, it may catch the eyes of those on the fence about buying a Harley? It may just be a way to get more eyes on their motorcycles. Last, we talk about Harley-Davidson reverting back to the cable clutch system on their 2021 touring models. From 2014 to 2020, Harley had a much better hydraulic clutch system on the touring line-up. This has really stunned many loyal Harley owners as many feel it's a backward step in technology. It feels cheap for Harley to do this and then not reduce the price of the motorcycle. After all, this is supposed to be a premium touring motorcycle? And now with a cable clutch? Really Harley? The Harley hydraulic clutch system was a much better system and caused less hand fatigue. Plus, it was self-adjusting and always had a consistent pull and friction zone, unlike cable clutches. If you actually like some adjustment on the clutch lever itself on hydraulic systems, then there are many aftermarket adjusting levers to choose from. You'll really need to listen to this podcast episode as we break everything down and tell you what you need to know. New Free Video Mentioned: Subscribe to our YouTube Channel! Official Website: https://www.lawabidingbiker.com In this podcast episode, I explain what you need to know about the new 2021 Harley-Davidson model line-up. These were all revealed at Harley's first-ever global virtual launch event held online on January 19, 2021. I put a video out on our YouTube Channel shortly after the event. SEE VIDEO-The Real 2021 Harley Model Event-The Facts & Issues You Need to Know!! There are some issues I discovered, such as the new 2021 Harley touring models are coming with a cable clutch instead of a hydraulic clutch that has been on touring models since 2014. There were some recalls on the hydraulic clutch system over the years but it seemed to have been resolved. We really have no idea why Harley did this because these are supposed to be “premium motorcycles” and cable clutches are yesterday's technology. I think this is going to irritate many customers since other motorcycle companies are using hydraulic clutches. SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE And it seems at this time that you can no longer put current model aftermarket electronic fuel injection (EFI) tuners on your Harley. They seemed to have changed the data port, so the current tuners won't plug into the engine control module (ECM). I have no doubt though, that aftermarket EFI tuner companies are already working on a solution for this, so it will just be a matter of time. Until then, you can only use a Harley Screamin' Eagle (SE) EFI tuner but they are terrible and don't do much as far as tuning. Harley can use and sell the SE tuner because it is restricted and therefore EPA compliant. This is also likely the reason Harley had to make this overall data port change, to try and block aftermarket tuners that are not restricted. The new Harley CVO line-up will be the Street Glide, Road Glide, Limited, and Tri-Glide, which all have several paint options. They will be coming with the Milwaukee-Eight 117 ci. V-Twin engine. Harley partnered with Rockford Fosgate and the Street Glide CVO and Road Glide CVO will not come with the Harley Audio by Rockford Fosgate Stage 2 Audio system. The Limited and Tri-Glide will come with the standard Boom Audio Stage 1. CHECK OUT OUR HUNDREDS OF FREE HELPFUL VIDEOS ON OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL AND SUBSCRIBE! The Harley “special” series models will be the Street Glide, Road Glide, and Road King. Harley may have been listening to customers because you now have a black or chrome option on the Street Glide Special and Road Glide Special but not on the Road King Special. Also revealed were the Street Bob 114 and the iconic Fat Boy for 2021 and they both look great. Official website: https://www.lawabidingbiker.com For some time Harley-Davidson has had an oil transfer or migration problem on certain touring models and they are still trying to figure it out. Listen in to this entire podcast episode to learn what it's all about and how to diagnose it. In this written article below are just the highlights. I try and keep it fairly basic and easy to understand. Also, learn about the Harley Milwaukee-Eight "Oil Sumping" Problem here! Introduction to the Harley oil transfer problem: Harley oil transfer is when oil moves over from the transmission into the primary case. This eventually leaves the transmission very low on oil and the primary with too much oil. Of course, a transmission with low or no oil will certainly fail and need to be repaired or completely replaced. SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE Understand, there will always be a small amount of Harley oil transfer between the transmission and primary cases (small amounts-2 oz or so). This is normal and it's only when larger amounts are transferring that causes issues. This has been a frustrating issue for Harley over the years because it doesn't happen to all of their motorcycles. There are two shafts in the transmission, the main shaft and the countershaft, both having 6 gears. When the gears are turning, air and oil get blended and mixed around covering everything, and pressure is created. To help with the pressure, Harley designed a breathing transmission which is why you'll see the vent hose on the top of your transmission. The main shaft of the transmission extends all the way over to the primary side (right side). A push rod goes all the way through the hollow main shaft and it engages and disengages the clutch basket. The primary case has the clutch, compensator, primary chain and is an oil bath system. The oil here also gets blended and creates pressure when things are turning. This pressure is supposed to be relieved through the hollow main transmission shaft and back into the transmission and breath through the same transmission breather tube. Clearly this method is not working all the time and there are issues. 2014-2016 Twin Cam: Harley tried to fix this on the 2014-2016 twin cam models. Engineers resigned the main seal and spacer between the transmission and primary for closer tolerances. This seemed to fix the issue for those bikes that experienced it. 2017 & newer Milwaukee-Eight: In 2017 Harley released the Milwaukee-Eight motor and it didn't take long for the same issue to arise on select bikes. Harley oil transfer is isolated to touring models and especially those that are ridden long distances, which really blends the oil, builds pressure, and gives the oil much time to slowly transfer over. Those who ride short distances and don't ride often will likely never see the problem as there is not enough time for it to take effect. CHECK OUT OUR HUNDREDS OF FREE HELPFUL VIDEOS ON OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL AND SUBSCRIBE! Harley made a kit for the M8 that contains a transmission gasket and oil deflector called a "slinger" to combat the issue. The slinger is installed at the end of the hollow main transmission shaft and is supposed to sling oil away from it so there will be no oil transfer through it. Then came the 2018 and newer M8 models and the same Harley oil transfer problem existed. Harley made another kit for these models. The kit is basically a breather hose with a plastic shoe. A hole is drilled in the backside of the primary case and the breather hose (vent) is installed. This new breather vent is to prevent the vacuum effect on the transmission, thus stopping the pulling of oil from the transmission by the primary. This kit is only being put on those bikes that actually have the issue. How to determine whether this is an issue with your bike: The best way to find out if the Harley oil transfer issue is happening on your Harley is to check your transmission oil level, especially on longer rides. If you see no leaks around your Harley and your transmission oil is getting low then you likely have the issue. Also, your primary case will be overfilled with oil when checked. Official Website: https://www.lawabidingbiker.com There is an ongoing oil sumping issue with some Harley-Davidson motorcycles equipped with the 2017-2019 Milwaukee-Eight motor and you should definitely be aware of so you know if your bike is affected. Oil sumping or wet sumping is a condition where oil, instead of returning to the oil tank, builds up in the crankcase and cam gearcase, causing excessive friction and power loss. Sumping is when the suction side of the oil pump does not remove enough oil from the crankcase. When the flywheels rotate in the oil they turn it into an aerated state. Thus, oil gets trapped in the crankcase and does not return to pump. The Milwaukee-Eight oil sumping issue is because the stock oil pump may be inadequate. SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE If you ride short distances, you'll likely never experience the sumping issue. After a shorter ride, the bike will build up oil in the crankcase and then you'll shut the bike down. On the next startup and idle, the crankcase will empty and you'll never become aware of the issue. The Milwaukee-Eight oil sumping issue happens over time, so if you ride harder on those twisties or ride long distances at higher speeds on the highways, the issue is more likely to reveal itself. It's during these times the oil can build up in the crankcase. The Milwaukee-Eight oiling system requires a fine balancing act to maintain the correct amount of oil pressure, oil volume and scavenging to eliminate wet-sumping while maintaining quiet operation and optimized power production without generating excessive heat. CHECK OUT OUR HUNDREDS OF FREE HELPFUL VIDEOS ON OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL AND SUBSCRIBE! Consequences: Oil sumping will result in excessive friction and power loss to your Harley M8 engine. Excess crankcase oil is whipped into a froth of air and oil by the flywheel. This condition is called oil aeration. Aerated oil makes scavenging much more difficult and can hinder the return of oil from the rocker box area. The combination of these conditions often results in oil being forced out the head breathers, air cleaner contamination, oil leaks, loss of oil supply, lifter clatter, premature component wear, and potential engine failure. Symptoms: You may get excessive oil blowback from the crank breathers inside your air intake. You may see excessive oil splattered along the right side of your bike while riding hard or long distances. Your air filter may become saturated with engine oil. You may feel your bike has slightly less powerful as it would on a normal hot day. But eventually, the oil in the crankcase builds to the point that the crank is sloshing through the oil as it gets deeper in the crankcase. Eventually, the crankcase fills leaving massive rotational resistance. Efforts to accelerate are met with no response. The engine simply can’t rapidly change rotational speed because of the resistance. Engine failure comes from there being so much oil build up in the crankcase, that the pan is starved leaving no oil to be pumped to the top end. The engine also overheats just from all the resistance of too much oil in the crankcase. The engine begins to overheat and components such as bearings, lifters, and worse, begin to fail. The rider will never see an oil light which is quite disturbing and a significant design flaw. The fix: Installing a new 2020 Harley oil pump is the only fix, which now comes stock on those 2020 and newer Harley models with the Milwaukee-Eight motor. Clearly Harley is aware of the oil sumping issue, which is why they re-designed the oil pump for the 2020 models and factory install it. The dealerships will not say much about oil sumping in general and will just recommend you upgrade to the new 2020 oil pump for "better oil control and better oiling performance." At your expense of course. By installing the new 2020 Harley oil pump you'll avoid the Milwaukee-Eight oil sumping issue altogether. Harley OEM oil pump kits: Oil cooled M8-HD Part# 62400238 Twin-Cooled HD Part# 62400247 Note: There are some aftermarket companies also making a replacement oil pump that provide even better oil performance. **If you appreciate all the free content we put out to help the biker community, please consider purchasing an aftermarket oil pump through our affiliates. No additional cost to you, but if you click through and make a purchase we do get a small commission. It definitely helps!! Get an aftermarket oil pump: Revzilla | J&P Cycles | Amazon Oil pump changes: The big changes to this new 2020 oil pump are in the scavenger gears. The original/faulty oil pump had a 10 tooth scavenger gear and the new oil pump comes with an 8 tooth scavenger gear, which will scavenge more oil out the M8. The new oil pump body was made to size for the smaller scavenger gear set. The older faulty oil pump was designed to scavenge 60% from the cam cover area and 40% from the crankcase. The new 2020 oil pump is a 50/50 split when scavenging oil. New Free Video Mentioned: Harley Boom Box GTS Will Have Android Auto in 2020 & Upgrade Your System Sponsor-Ciro 3D CLICK HERE! Official Website: https://www.lawabidingbiker.com Harley released their latest touring bike, the Electra Glide Standard, and kept it pretty low key. Harley is calling it the "dressed down dresser". It comes in at a cheaper option than the Street Glide, Road Glide or either of those "special" models. In this podcast episode, we break things down for you and what this new Harley is all about and who it may be for, so listen in. The 2019 Harley Electra Glide is basically a stripped down Street Glide and so that's what I am going to compare it to. The Harley Electra Glide starts at $18,999 and the basic Harley Street Glide starts at $21,289. The Street Glide special jumps up to a starting price tag of $27,089. SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE The 2019 Harley Electra Glide Standard is an awesome and capable touring bike. I say that because I ride a 2018 Police Electra Glide every day for work. It is a highly capable bike and I think it's great that Harley made a regular public model here in 2019. Understand that the Harley Electra Glide lacks a stereo/infotainment system of any kind and there is just an empty open storage box in that location. It doesn't come standard with ABS brakes but hey can be added for $795. I strongly suggest you add ABS brakes if nothing else as they save lives. It also lacks a two-up passenger seat and passenger pegs but anything can be added based on your needs. CHECK OUT OUR HUNDREDS OF FREE HELPFUL VIDEOS ON OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL AND SUBSCRIBE! I'll also mention, the Electra Glide has smaller wheels and the tires are thicker than the Street Glide. The windshield is tall and plain and it has the regular square rear brake/signal setup. You can only get this bike in black. All these things separate its look from the Street Glide a bit. The 2019 Harley Electra Glide comes with the very capable Milwaukee-Eight 107 motor. Yes, it comes standard with cruise control, which is a must for any touring bike. Harley has recently been making moves to appeal to a broader demographic of riders. I believe the 2019 Harley Electra Glide Standard is an attempt to grab riders who may now be able to get into motorcycle touring at a lower price point. The 2019 Electra Glide Standard is a cheaper price and stripped down but a very capable Harley touring model. It will be interesting to see how well this bike sells. Remember, that for close to $2,000 more than the 2019 Harley Electra Glide Standard you can get a Street Glide Standard, which comes standard with ABS brakes, a basic version of the Boom Box radio (4.3 non-touch screen), two up passenger seat, passenger pegs, and paint options. But, everyone's budget is different, so the Electra Glide may be the best option for many. You can always build this bike up how you want it. Official Website: If you currently have or are considering purchasing a Harley-Davidson extended warranty plan at the time of purchase on a new bike with the Milwaukee-eight motor, you may reconsider now and into the future if things stay in their current state. If you are planning on adding specific performance upgrades, it may void both the two-year manufacturer's warranty and any 3 or 5-year Harley extended warranty you purchased, commonly referred to as an "extended service plan". These new strict warranty policies really only pertain to 2017 & newer Harley's with the Milwaukee-Eight motor. Those of us that own earlier models really haven't had to deal with what I'm about to reveal to you. (This is a guide only. Read the actual warranty paperwork for yourself.) SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE 60 Day Service & Warranty Registration (SWR) Let's first talk about the 60-day warranty rule, which is referred to as a "Sales & Warranty Registration" or "SWR". If within the first 60 days of your new Harley purchase you purchase Harley Screamin' Eagle parts and have them installed by a Harley dealership mechanic, all parts and labor will be covered during the two-year manufacturer's warranty and during any extended service plan you purchase. Also, all the parts and labor will be tracked under the vehicle identification number (VIN) and can be tracked for the life of the bike. It's as if the bike came from the factory with the parts. An example would be a Screamin' Eagle stage four install. You can often finance the Screamin' Eagle parts and labor at the time of purchase of your new Harley. Now, you can still purchase Harley Screamin' Eagle parts after that 60 days and have a dealership mechanic install them and your warranty will remain intact, however, only the 1-year Screamin' Eagle parts warranty will apply and labor will not be covered in the future if there is a related problem. Note: You can purchase a 3 or 5-year extended service plan, which attaches to the end of the two-year manufacturer's warranty. That means, if you purchased the 3-year extended, you'd be covered for 5 years. Likewise, if you purchased the 5-year extended, you'd be covered for 7 years. Then, as long as you don't exceed 75,000 miles you can renew your extended service plan for an additional 5-years for a total of 12 years risk-free engine work/labor. But, this all comes with a price tag of course. And a reminder that you've been forced to only use overpriced Harley parts. What Voids Your Harley Warranty? If you or anyone else besides a certified Harley dealership technician installs Harley Screamin' Eagle parts or any other brand performance engine parts on your Harley, any warranty you have is technically voided. We'll talk further about that later. CHECK OUT OUR HUNDREDS OF FREE HELPFUL VIDEOS ON OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL AND SUBSCRIBE! As an example, and very technically speaking here, if you install simple aftermarket slip-on mufflers and an aftermarket stage-one air intake your two-year Harley manufacturer's warranty and any extended service plan you purchased is voided. Certainly, if a non-Harley certified dealership mechanic or you install a stage four kit of any brand, your Harley warranty will be voided. Further, if you or anyone else install an aftermarket electronic fuel injection (EFI) tuner, your entire Harley warranty is immediately voided. How Does Harley Decipher These Things? Some things are going to vary from dealership to dealership on how they choose to handle some of these issues and how they choose to treat their local customers. But first, what you need to know is that if you take your Harley to any dealership and they need to plug your Harley's engine control module (ECM) into their proprietary Digital Technician II software, it is going to automatically start reading things. If the software determines you have current EFI map/tuning changes in your ECM from an aftermarket non-Harley EFI tuner it will immediately & automatically send that info to the Harley servers and will be forever locked to your VIN. Thus, your entire Harley warranty will be voided! The dealership will plug your ECM into Digital Tech for simple things like flashing your Boom Box Infotainment system after adding a speaker and amp system or adding a Wireless Headset Interface Module (WHIM) for wireless Bluetooth headset pairing with you Boom Box. Or, they may need to read the ECM to diagnose fuel and/or air issues and many other things. Simple installs like aftermarket slip-on mufflers or an air intake will not be read by Digital Technician as those alone cause no changes to the ECM. On the other hand, EFI tuners do change the air/fuel settings in the ECM and so it can be read by Digital Technician. Dealerships do have some options on how they handle things. Essentially, the aftermarket mufflers and air intake are visual to a dealership and not read by Digital Technician, thus nothing is sent to Harley servers and a dealership mechanic can certainly just move along with business and not report such things. But, after adding an exhaust system and air intake you'd want to re-map your EFI for optimal performance anyways. You could consider paying the Harley tax for a simple stage one EFI download, which would not void the warranty. Or, you can continue and pay more Harley taxes by buying the Harley Screamin' Eagle EFI tuner, which is not as good as the Vance & Hines FuelPak 3 or others, and pay a Harley mechanic to install it for the sake of keeping your Harley warranty intact. These new strict Harley warranty issues are making customers very upset. So, it seems Harley is forcing customers to use their Screamin' Eagle parts exclusively and only allowing their mechanics to install them. And that is not sitting well with Harley's long time, once brand loyal customers. Many long-time loyalists are leaving Harley because of moves like this and other recent moves that leave their true paying customers very unhappy. Harley-Davidson tries to blame all these new warranty issues on the recent Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) pressures. Yes, Harley has had to make changes ordered by the EPA in the past several years as they are the big dog. I understand that, but to then take it as far as voiding a customer's warranty for simply installing slip-on mufflers or an air intake is extreme in my opinion & completely unnecessary. I can tell you that Screamin' Eagle EFI tuners, air intakes, and slip-on mufflers are the same as many other aftermarket options. Screamin' Eagle often times are not as good as other aftermarket options and always a higher price (the Harley tax). I certainly understand major engine work like a Harley stage four kit being installed and the requirement to use their parts and their mechanics to maintain a warranty. Those are major engine changes, but slip-on mufflers-really Harley? Note: If you are buying an used Harley from someone with a transferrable warranty, I'd make an appointment to have the Harley ECM plugged into Digital Tech to verify the warranty is intact prior to making a deal. I'll never buy another Harley Warranty! Make no mistake about it, Harley makes a large amount of money by pushing extended service plans at the time of purchase. Not to mention, now they're making you buy their parts and paying their mechanics. I've had Harley warranty's over the past years and I can remember only one time actually using it and it was a $200 bill. Most will tell you they've never used their Harley warranty. Harley would not be pushing these extended warranties if they were not making large amounts of money on them. I'll also mention, that is a testament to the high quality of a Harley when you buy it. Because of these new Harley warranty issues and them trying to force me not to work on my own bike, I'll never give Harley another penny for an extended warranty service plan ever again! If we all do that, it will send a very strong financial message to Harley that this is an unacceptable practice. I will continue to work on my own Harley and put the parts I want and not pay the Harley Screamin' Eagle tax. Harley riders buy a bike and then they customize it and personalize it with aftermarket parts to include their choice of exhaust, stage one air intake, and EFI tuner. And so many of us enjoy wrenching on our own Harley and we take great pride in such. It's been done this for so many years and this is one of the big draws for even purchasing a Harley in the first place. It's part of the Harley culture! Take those things away and Harley will continue to lose their very loyal core customers. Sponsor-Ciro 3D CLICK HERE! Official Website: https://www.lawabidingbiker.com This episode is all about the 2019 Harley-Davidson FXDR 114. This new motorcycle was released in late 2018 and at that time I took it for a test ride. To get all the details, check out my Harley FXDR 114 test ride and overview videos on YouTube. The Harley-Davidson FXDR 114 rides great considering it has a 240 mm rear tire on an 18” wheel. The 19” front wheel with a 120 mm wide front tire works well with the rear tire size. The new cast aluminum swingarm and inverted front forks with cartridge dampening both round it out to make a good cornering motorcycle. I was actually very impressed with its abilities. Official Website: https://www.lawabidingbiker.com We discuss the recent Police Motorcycle Escort School Oscar and I recently attended in Spokane, Wa. We try and go to this school each year to stay up to date with practices and procedures. One of the most dangerous things that Police Motor Officers do are escorts. By training often we can minimize the risks associated. SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE Many Police Motor Agencies in Washington State train together and use the same specific hand signals, practices, and protocols. This is important as many times local agencies will call outside agencies to help with larger scale escorts, like a dignitary escort as an example. It's very important that agencies follow the same rules and practices or risks go way up. It's a good idea for Police Motor Officers to train in an unfamiliar area because it is likely they will be called to do an escort in a city that is not familiar. Pre-rides and safety briefs are done prior to an escort, but unfamiliar roads make it a bit more dangerous. Oscar attended the North American Motor Officer Association training in and competition recently in Hillsboro, Oregon. This event is awesome and lasts about 3 days. Officers throughout North America get together and train hard together for several days before competing. I went last year and really enjoyed it. You just need to save your product purchase receipts and sign the back of your owner's manual for the services you do! We here at Law Abiding Biker Media, Inc. service our Harley's ourselves of course. However, due to contracts and department practices, I am required to have my issued Police Harley-Davidson Electra Glide serviced at a dealership. Because of this, I learn a ton of actual real-world information that I can share with the community here. SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE Please understand, I have nothing but the utmost respect for certified Harley mechanics and I have several that are friends. I gather real information from them to relate to you. I am in no way talking badly about those Harley mechanics or dealerships. I am just relating the facts so you can be more informed about what actually occurs on one of these routine Harley oil changes/services. On my most recent oil change/service on my 2018 Police Harley Electra Glide with the Milwaukee-Eight motor, I spent time with mechanics while they serviced my bike. By doing so, I re-confirmed what I had learned years earlier. They do nothing more than what we show you in our Harley oil change/service tutorial videos. And, we actually show you a few additional things in those videos along with many tips and tricks. You must understand that motorcycle and car dealerships alike have very specific protocols for servicing vehicles. That means if their service book says that a routine Harley oil change and service takes 3.5 hrs (and the book does say this) then that is what you will be billed for regardless if they get it done sooner. This is nothing new, but surprisingly many Harley and car owners alike do not know this. No, the mechanics don't check every bolt and torque on your Harley as some out there believe. This would be absurd anyway. They may check the front and rear axle bolt torques as an example, but that would be all as they are more critical components. Much of what they check is visual and if there is no problem spotted then nothing is done further and it is checked off the list. An example would be visually checking oil, fuel lines, fluid levels, brake pads, belts, sprockets etc. In addition to visual inspections, much can be checked when the mechanic takes your Harley out for a test ride after the oil change. Lights, throttle, switches, shocks, and clutch are just a few. If the bike is running great and all feels to work well then nothing further is needed. I was provided with a .pdf inspection sheet that the mechanic prints out to make sure he/she checks the most important things. It is a list of about 40 things, many being visual inspections. It is nowhere near 200 items. Tire pressure, tread, brake pads, oil change, fluid levels, and filters are common things during a routine service of course. Again, we show you all this in our awesome tutorial videos. Listen in to learn more as we go through each item that was checked or done at the dealership to my Police Harley when receiving a routine service and oil change. After you listen and view one of our Harley oil change/service videos you'll wonder why you ever paid that much money at a dealership. Plus, there's no better feeling than servicing and taking pride in your Harley. Official Website: https://www.lawabidingbiker.com I have been riding and training on my 2013 Police Harley Electra Glide for some time now. I love this bike and work on it daily as a Motorcycle Police Officer. I am retiring this bike that now has about 30,000 miles on it, which is standard for the agency I work for. It will become a spare bike and mostly sit. I'm being issued a brand new 2018 Harley-Davidson Electra Glide Police Edition and I'm super excited. These Police Harley's come stock with a bunch of emergency equipment, wiring, and switches. We also have to customize them locally with radios and computers. SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE Listen in as we discuss my new Police Harley. My 2013 has the 103 motor and a cable clutch. My new 2018 Harley will have the 107 ci Milwaukee-Eight motor and a hydraulic clutch. Switching from a Harley cable to hydraulic clutch can take some time when riding aggressively on training courses, but it's not a big deal for me as my personal 2014 Harley-Davidson Street Glide Special has a hydraulic clutch. Generally speaking, a cable clutch has a little bigger gray area than a hydraulic. For years, we adjusted our cable clutch to exactly where we wanted it to engage when we let the lever out. GET OUR HARLEY MILWAUKEE-EIGHT ROUTINE MAINTENANCE AND OIL CHANGE VIDEO HERE With a hydraulic clutch there are no adjustments at all. However, we are testing some aftermarket adjustable clutch levers for our police Harley's and are liking them. I will do a future video review of what model of adjustable lever we decide on, so stay tuned and make sure you are subscribed to our YouTube Channel. My 2013 Police Harley is a pre-2014 Rushmore model. My 2013 bike shakes quit a bit, especially at idle. This new 2018 Harley is amazing and they got ride of a ton of shaking and vibration with the Milwaukee-Eight motor. The power increase is very noticeable too. I have already ridden new Police Milwaukee-Eight bikes and the transition will be fairly easy for me. This bike is powerful and smooth. Listen in as we give you an inside look and details on what it takes to get up and running with a Police Harley. It is quite a process before the bike is ready to hit the road. I actually stripped down the two new Harley's we got. I removed the fairings, seats, and fuel tanks to give our radio & computer guys access to equip the bikes. I will put the bikes back together when they are done. Sponsor-Ciro 3D CLICK HERE! Official website: http://www.lawabidingbiker.com Podcast-Matt "Lurch" Couchman, Rick "Big Daddy" Kane, and Brian "Grunt" White spent the day in the Law Abiding Biker Grage. We were filming a complete service, oil change, and service on a Harley-Davidson with a Milwaukee-Eight engine! In this episode, we give you a behind the scenes look. The Harley dealership that performed the 1K break in service on this 2017 Road Glide did not do several things properly we found. You must hear our findings, so you can be aware what to look for! We also tell you why it's not worth your money to buy these oil change and service packages from the dealership when purchasing a new Harley. Brian will tell you the truth and he tested it. Note: Understand that the problems we found were that of one unnamed Harley dealership. We know many great Harley mechanics and dealerships. We have found similar problems like this from a few other dealerships. SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE! It doesn’t matter if you have the 107 ci or 114 ci engine as the service is the same. It doesn't matter what model you have as what we teach you is the same. Official Website: http://www.lawabidingbiker.com Podcast-So, you may have heard the vicious rumors going around that Harley-Davidson dealerships are voiding warranties if you install aftermarket exhaust, remove catalytic converters, or install electronic fuel injection (EFI) tuners on your new 2017 model equipped with the Milwaukee-Eight motor. The unreliable motorcycle forums are full of bad information because nobody actually researches the matter. Well, I did that for you and talked to many sources inside Harley-Davidson dealerships. Some of these rumors got started because recently the Screamin Eagle Super Tuner was banned by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Harley-Davidson was fined $12 million dollars. So, nothing is new with the new 2017 Milwaukee-Eight 107 or 114 ci motors in regards to warranties. For years, all Harley owners have been at risk of having a warranty voided for installing aftermarket exhaust, removing catalytic converters, or adding EFI tuners. Clearly, dealerships are not supposed to remove catalytic converters, but it's fine to install new Vance & Hines or other aftermarket head pipes without them? The confusion goes on from there. The fact of the matter is that you're still at risk and internal Harley-Davidson policies have not changed. But, Harley-Davidson leaves much discretion to its dealerships to handle matters such as this. So, what does this really mean for you as a Harley-Davidson owner? Make sure you have a very open line of communication with your local dealership service writer and mechanics. Ask them point blank if they are in the business of voiding your motorcycle warranty if you change pipes, intake, or add an EFI tuner. I can tell you that most will not void your warrant and have not voided warranties for years as it's just bad business all the way around. Especially at these times when Indian and Victory are banging on Harley's doors trying to get a bigger chunk of the market. If your dealership says they will actually void your Harley warranty for such things then never step foot in that dealership again and tell all your Harley buddies. That would be a personal choice by that particular dealership and I'd make certain they got very little business. You'll have to listen in to this podcast episode to get the full scoop and find out what other things we learned and other tips we give!
