2024 Mercedes-AMG GLB 35: Road Testing in the Malibu Hills

America on the Road

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 15, 2024 45:00

We admit the Mercedes-AMG GLB 35 isn't quite as sleek and sexy-looking as its sibling, the GLA, but when you're at the controls of the compact sports utility, it immediately ceases to matter. The influx of 300+ horsepower is the biggest reason. Suddenly, you're not operating a mundane grocery-getter, but instead, you find yourself piloting an agile, goes-where-you-point-it sports sedan that just happens to be almost five and a half feet tall. The Motor Press Guild's annual Drive Day gave Host Jack Nerad the chance to reacquaint himself with the joys of the AMG GLB 35 4Matic+, which is the hot rod of the GLB lineup. At $59,050, it not only features an AMG-tuned version of a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that delivers 302 horsepower, but also a well-tuned sport suspension that includes a multi-link rear. With giant brakes, 19-inch alloy wheels, and low-profile tires, the mashup proves irresistible. Nerad will tell you more in this episode. In this week's other road test, Co-host Chris Teague puts an all-new yet startlingly familiar vehicle to the test. The Mazda CX-70 is brand-spanking-new for the 2025 model year, and we'll bet you haven't seen one. But then it bears a remarkable resemblance to another vehicle that is significantly better known. Teague will describe the CX-70's lineage in much more detail and tell us how he enjoyed driving the plug-in hybrid version of Mazda's newest nameplate. This week our special guest is Sam Fiorani, Vice President of Global Vehicle Forecasting at AutoForecast Solutions. If you are thinking about buying a car this year, Sam can give you a great idea of what you can expect and how you can save some money. So we're sure you'll enjoy our discussion. In this week's news, both General Motors and Ford reasserted their faith in electric vehicles this past week. At the same time, both automakers have cut their current EV production plans as sales have slowed. We have to wonder whether they are crossing their fingers when they say that they have a firm belief in an electric-vehicle future. While EVs aren't selling as well as many had hoped, they are certainly using a lot of electricity. A new study shows how much and where. Of course, the expanded use of electricity has a lot of implications, and we'll explore them in this episode. In other news, Tesla hasn't been able to persuade California to call off its investigation into the way it has marketed its self-driving technology. And Toyota is doubling down on hydrogen despite the fact its Mirai hydrogen fuel cell vehicle has not garnered many sales. Both of those stories are worth exploring, too. America on the Road is brought to you by Driving Today.com, Mercury Insurance, and EMLandsea.com , the publisher of Nerad's latest book, Dance in the Dark, which is available HERE on Amazon.com

In this On the Move, hosts Matt Avery and John Kraman kick things off with an eye toward the upcoming Orlando Summer Special. Part of the conversation centers on one of the stars crossing the auction block: a 1987 Buick GNX. One of just 547 produced, the Jet Black bruiser shows a scant 55 miles on the odometer and comes with copies of the window sticker and dealer invoice. From there, the guys dish on their attendance at the Motor Press Guild's Drive Day held in the canyons of Malibu, California. With the event featuring some of the latest vehicles, Matt and John give their thoughts on back-to-back time behind the wheel of the Hyundai Santa Cruz and Ford Maverick. Then, it's on to the rumors surrounding the upcoming seventh-generation Mustang, with all indicators pointing to an April 2023 release. In the latter part of this week's episode, Mike Copeland is on the line. Mike is CEO of Arrington Performance and wowed the guys at last year's SEMA show with a radical, classic Chevrolet pickup. Under the hood was a late-model powertrain that used hydrogen as its fuel source. Mike fills Matt and John in on how the wild build came together and gives a glimpse of what the future could look like with more widespread adoption of the alternative propellant.

Dave Kunz has been an employee of ABC7 for a quarter-century, becoming the Eyewitness News Automotive Specialist in February 2001. In addition to his duties as a photographer and editor, his on-camera work makes ABC7 the only station in Southern California with a dedicated reporter covering automobiles and related topics. Growing up in the San Fernando Valley, Dave always gravitated toward the Southern California car culture that was all around him. His television career started in an unusual way, however. Dave was offered a "temporary, part-time job" at KABC-TV while in college as a business major. Though business would always be something to fall back on (keeping his family happy), broadcasting was continually calling his name. He went on to a formative career in television, first at KTLA and then back at KABC. Eventually, Dave was able to merge his career in television with his passion for things with wheels, and now gets to experience just about anything that runs on gasoline (or increasingly, clean new cars that don't use any), and bring them to Eyewitness News viewers. He is a member of both the Motor Press Guild and the Society of Automotive Historians. Dave also volunteers as an emcee at local vintage car shows such as The Friends of Steve McQueen Car and Motorcycle Show, the Palos Verdes Concours d'Elegance, and the Art Center Car Classic. Dave spends his free time with his wife, Suzanne, who helps him keep a small collection of classic cars in (usually) running order. Follow Dave on social media: Facebook.com/abc7davekunz Twitter.com/abc7davekunz Instagram.com/abc7davekunz

After a postponement and cancellation because of the COVID-19 pandemic, LA AutoMobility and the LA Auto Show will be back later this year at the Los Angeles Convention Center. Collectively, the automotive industry can't wait. Plenty of other auto shows didn't occur last year and won't until later this year. But organizers of the Los Angeles show, the first major industry event of the season, decided to offer a glimpse into the future. The 2021 Toyota Mirai was discussed during the recent LA Auto Show virtual Media Day. A virtual media gathering with representatives from many carmakers was recently held, and The Weekly Driver Podcast was part of it. Co-hosts Bruce Aldrich and James Raia listened to several presentations and follow-up question-and-answer sessions. We even submitted a few questions that were answered. The LA Auto Show will be held Nov. 19-28. In the meantime, on episode No. 175 of The Weekly Driver Podcast, we'll hear from representatives from Magna, Toyota and Volkswagen. Magna International is a Canadian mobility technology company for automakers. It produces automotive systems, assemblies, modules and components supplied to BMW, Fiat-Chrysler, Ford, General Motors, Mercedes, Volkswagen and Tesla. The 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 was introduced during the 2021 LA Auto Show virtual Media Day. Toyota's presentation is the introduction of the 2021 Mirai. It's one of only three mainstream hydrogen fuel cell cars available in the United States. LA Auto Show: EVs on the horizon In the ever-expanding electric vehicle segment, Volkswagen's latest offering is the ID.4. It debuted in late 2020 in Europe and in early 2021 to North American customers in early 2021. It's the fully electric crossover SUV under the Volkswagen brand. The German manufacturer is marketing the ID.4 as a high-volume, mass-market electric vehicle — a car for “the millions, not the millionaires." We'll hear VW's presentation, too. Please join Bruce and me for this virtual presentation hosted by the Motor Press Guild. It's an audio-only preview of the pending LA Auto Show.
