Maggie speaks intimately with Robby Krieger about his debut recording with his latest group, The Soul Savages. Joining Robby on this all-instrumental odyssey of psych-rock soul are top-shelf composers, instrumentalists, and bandmates. Bassist-songwriter Kevin “Brandino” Brandon co-wrote and recorded with Robby on the Singularity album, and he has won over half a dozen Grammy awards as well as three Emmy awards. His extensive resume includes credits with James Brown, Aretha Franklin, Michael Jackson, and Beyonce. Keyboardist-songwriter Ed Roth is a Grammy-nominee known for his work in jazz, rock, and pop, and a robust resume that includes working with Ringo Starr, Brothers Johnson, Coolio, Shuggie Otis, and Annie Lennox. And drummer-songwriter Franklin Vanderbilt brings savage to the band's soul with his fatback groove and jazzy nimbleness. Among others, his credits include drumming for legendary Chaka Khan, recording with fusion jazz pioneer Stanley Clarke, and touring worldwide with Lenny Kravitz.Robby Krieger knows that when you assemble the right bunch of musicians, and trust in the creative process, magic happens. As a founding member of The Doors, the guitarist intuitively understands the beauty of free-flowing collaboration and telepathic group interplay. This is evident on Robby's self-titled debut release from his new band, Robby Krieger And The Soul Savages, out January 19, 2024 on The Players Club / Mascot Label Group.Robby Krieger And The Soul Savages was recorded old school style with a bunch of friends jamming and recording in a relaxed studio setting. Tracked at Robby's own Love Street Studios in Glendale, California, it finds Robby stretching out over cinematic groove music inspired by classic soul, 1960s jazz, blues, rock, psychedelic rock, and beyond.Source: https://www.mascotlabelgroup.com/collections/robby-kriegerSource: https://www.allmusic.com/album/robby-krieger-the-soul-savages-mw0004139373Source: https://www.amazon.com/Robby-Krieger-Soul-Savages/dp/B0CMJ8MZD6Host Maggie LePique, a radio veteran since the 1980's at NPR in Kansas City Mo. Glenn's band will feature Soren Andersen (guitar), Ash Sheehan (drums) and Ed Roth (keyboards).'It was 50 years ago, in the summer of 1973, that the BURN album by Deep Purple was written at Clearwell castle in Gloucestershire UK,” reminisces Hughes. “It was recorded in October in Montreux, Switzerland.”Continues Hughes, “We all became one in this centuries old castle in the UK countryside, it felt like Deep were a new band, with David (Coverdale) and I as new members, we couldn't wait to start working on new song. The atmosphere was electric, in such amazing surroundings.”“All the songs on Burn were written in the crypt/dungeon, underneath the great hall. We worked on a new song every day, and we were in the flow. Musically we would play, and work out ideas, and David and I would come up with vocal melodies that would later have lyrics. I remember it like it was yesterday.”“As you could imagine, Ritchie Blackmore was in full prankster mode, Jon had warned me, and he rigged my room one night with a speaker that was hidden, and had ghostly voices delivered to my bedside.”“The title track was the last song to be written. We came back from the pub, and went down into the crypt, and magic happened.” Concludes Hughes, “It's time to celebrate BURN, and I'm really looking forward to seeing you!” GLENN HUGHES PERFORMS CLASSIC HITS FROM THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF DEEP PURPLE'S LEGENDARY “BURN” ALBUM AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2023 US TOUR WITH YNGWIE MALMSTEEN (unless otherwise noted): 08.16.23 LANDIS THEATER VINELAND, NJ*** (GLENN HUGHES ONLY) 08.18.23 STRAND THEATER HUDSON FALLS, NY 08.19.23 THE CHANCE POUGHKEEPSIE, NY 08.22.23 THE PALLADIUM TIMES SQUARE NEW YORK, NEW YORK 08.23.23 THE PARAMOUNT HUNTINGTON, NY 08.25.23 THE KING OF CLUBS COLUMBUS, OH 08.26.23 ARCADA THEATER ST. LAUDERDALE, FL 09.23.23 CAPITOL THEATER CLEARWATER, FL DEEP PURPLE – THE STORY BEHIND “BURN” Burn is the eighth studio album by the English rock band Deep Purple, written and recorded in 1973, and released in February 1974, the album was the first to feature then-unknown David Coverdale on vocals and Glenn Hughes, from Trapeze, on bass and vocals. The album was recorded in Montreux, Switzerland, in November 1973, with the Rolling Stones Mobile Studio. With the addition of David Coverdale and Glenn Hughes, Purple's hard rock sound became more boogie-oriented, incorporating elements of soul and funk, which would become much more prominent on the follow-up album, Stormbringer. Burn hit #3 on the UK Albums Chart, #9 on the US Billboard 200, and #1 in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Norway. In 2004 Burn was remastered and released with bonus tracks. Coronarias Redig was recorded during the Burn recording sessions, used only as a B-side for the Might Just Take Your Life single in 1974. It appears as a bonus track (in remixed form) on the anniversary edition re-release. The 2004 remix version of Burn was later used in Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock. In 2005 an unauthorized documentary about the album was produced as part of "The Ultimate Critical Review" series. It featured brand new interview with the original Deep Purple Mk III bassist and vocalist Glenn Hughes. Lead single Might Just Take Your Life, released 4 March, was Deep Purple's first UK single in two years. The phenomenal title track started things off at full throttle, actually challenging the seminal Highway Star for the honor of best opener to any Deep Purple album, while showcasing the always impressive drumming of Ian Paice. The fantastic slow-boiling blues of Mistreated's greatness qualifies it for the highest echelons of hard rock achievement, and therefore ranks as an essential item in the discography of any self-respecting music fan. GLENN HUGHES – BIOGRAPHY Glenn Hughes is an inductee into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as part of the MK 3 line up of Deep Purple. He spent the formative years of his career as the beloved bassist and vocalist of the group and performed on the classic albums Burn (1974), Stormbringer (1974) and Come Taste The Band (1975). The vocalist/bass guitarist/songwriter is a true original. No other rock musician has carved such a distinctive style blending the finest elements of hard rock, soul and funk. Stevie Wonder once called Hughes his favorite white singer. The first important band Hughes was a member of that achieved notable success was Trapeze. In 1973, Hughes joined Deep Purple. The trailblazing hard-rock legends had just weathered the departure of vocalist Ian Gillan and bass guitarist Roger Glover, but guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, keyboardist Jon Lord and drummer Ian Paice continued with the addition of Hughes and David Coverdale. Since 1992, Hughes has toured extensively in Europe, Japan, and South America in support of solo albums. He's recorded four studio albums with the multi-award-winning supergroup Black Country Communion featuring guitarist Joe Bonamassa, keyboardist Derek Sherinian (Dream Theater) and drummer Jason Bonham, son of the late Led Zeppelin legend John Bonham. In 2016 he released his critically acclaimed solo album Resonate featuring the rock radio hit “Heavy”, and in 2017 he released Black Country Communion's fourth studio album “BCCIV” to ecstatic reviews. In 2019, Glenn joined the Dead Daises as their lead singer and bass guitarist, recorded two albums, Holy Ground (2021) and Radiance (2022) and toured the world. Bob Larivee, Sr. was born in 1930 and grew up in the Motor City. His father was a painter and Bob's interest in the automotive industry started with the Soap Box Derby. He was studying to be a dentist, but his career path took a drastic turn.  In the early 1950s, he got into cars and racing during the golden age of racing that many only dream about. In November of 1959, he started Promotions Incorporated with his brother and charged $1.25 for entry. Imagine that! The indoor car show was a new idea. There was no car activity in the winter. No professional sports. People were craving activity and Bob delivered. By 1982, they were doing 100 shows a year.  Bob Larivee, Sr. shares story after story about how he became life-long friends with many industry leaders throughout the years. Listen to hear how it's been said that he was responsible for naming the “Ridler Award”. Or hear about how he ended up at Disneyland with Ed Roth and his family. Bob chuckles, “...being with Ed you never knew what it was going to be.” He also shares the story of how he got Batman and Robin (Adam West and Burt Ward) to attend one of his car shows and how he almost didn't open the doors for John Lennon. Bob Larivee, Sr. is also a published author, Founder of the Automotive Fine Arts Society, a contributor to the Museum of American Speed, and the magic behind the Museum of American Speed's new art gallery. Hot Rod Blues, Episode 14, BBQ With Phil & Jill Painter Phil and Jill Painter happened to be passing through Memphis after buying a car, so we jumped at the chance to have them on the show. They started the Musclecars at the Strip event in Las Vegas 20 years ago. Phil found a great deal on a 2022 Dodge Challenger 392 Scat Pak in Nashville, so the two flew in to pick it up and drive it back across the country to Vegas. Shawn B. got to know the couple after they hired him to photograph their event, so they had to stop and say hi. The Painters started the show after showing some cars at the Mopar Nationals. People started saying they needed a similar event out West, so they took the initiative to start the event. Jill explains the origin story of the event and how it came to be at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway, “The Strip.” Shawn asks them how they've been so successful to have a show that has lasted for 20 years and any advice for our Memphis Legends show on September 2-4. They explain some great advice (Including the need for great photography ;). Phil and Jill are from Utah and grew up in the town where Ed Roth lived and is buried, Manti, Utah. Phil talks about his legacy, the car show that happens every year in his honor. For the record, the show is the first weekend in June every year. People come from all over the world. The conversation turns to the passion for cars and how they transcend our small world . . . how musclecars and 4x4s have made a comeback and how many musicians are tied to the car culture. It's a terrific conversation with two passionate car people and they provided some great insight into the car culture and what it takes to run a successful event that has stood the test of time. Beautiful Day's Elizabeth Freund curated this week's MD Podcast with Ringo Starr on a private Zoom press conference to announce Ringo Starr Change The World, a new EP to be released on September 24, 2021. The 4 tracks were all recorded at Starr's Roccabella West studio and features frequent and new collaborators. Ringo comments, "I only want to release EPs at this point and here is the next one. What a blessing it's been during this past year to have a studio here at home and be able to collaborate with so many great musicians.” The lead single "Let's Change The World" was written by Joseph Williams and Steve Lukather of Toto. "Just That Way" was written and performed by Ringo and his longtime engineer Bruce Sugar, and it carries on the reggae vibe from his last EP, Zoom In's "Waiting for the Tides to Turn" with Tony Chen returning on guitar, joined by Fully Fullwood on Bass and Ed Roth on Hammond B3. "Coming Undone" is Starr's first collaboration with songwriter/producer Linda Perry, who wrote and plays on the track that also featuring Trombone Shorty. For the final number, Ringo rocks his own version of "Rock Around The Clock" revved up by the unmistakable licks of Joe Walsh on guitar. They are joined by Nathan East on Upright Bass, Bruce Sugar on Piano and Amy Keys and Windy Wagner on Backing Vocals. Besides the EP, Ringo also talks about the upcoming much anticipated six hour “Get Back” film coming November 2021. Enjoy!

Ever wanted to see your products hanging in the aisles of Target? Yeah, who hasn’t? Today’s Creative Queso Podcast guest, Ed Roth of Stencil1, is in Target stores right now and we are chatting all about how he got there.Ed not only has product lines, but has also authored several books and licensed his images to companies like Plaid Crafts landing his stencils into stores like Michaels and JoAnns. Influencers and content creators often only get the one off chance to work with large companies on a campaign or project, but in this interview Ed and I talk about how to make those experiences lasting mutually beneficial relationships.Stencil1, in my opinion, is responsible for making stencils cool again. Long gone are the stenciled ivy vines and geese in bonnets. Ed’s stencils are edgy and fun, think ice cream cones, muscle cars and my favorite classic monsters.Host: Jennifer Perkinshttp://creativequeso.comhttp://jenniferperkins.comGuest: Ed Roth https://stencil1.comPRODUCER: Myrriah GossettMUSIC: Chris Boehk See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

David Townsend is an automotive artist who owns Sports Car Art in southern Vermont. If you count the Rat Fink and other Ed Roth doodles that David used as inspiration as a grade schooler in SoCal, he’s been drawing cars for well over a half century. While a career in advertising and design eventually led him down a different creative path, he returned to illustrating full-time after he “retired” to reconnect with his fine art beginnings. David’s work has been featured on everything from catalog covers, and full-scale laser etchings, to books—including some 300 or so illustrations featured in a soon-to-be-published tome aimed at new or first-time collectors.
