Approachably Cool: 2025 Mazda CX-5 Carbon Turbo: 2025 Honda Civic Sport Touring Hatch

America on the Road

Play Episode Listen Later May 24, 2025 43:16

This week's episode of America on the Road features road tests of two standout vehicles--the 2025 Honda Civic Sport Touring hatchback and the 2025 Mazda CX-5 Carbon Turbo. Co-Host Chris Teague put the Civic Sport Touring hatchback to the asphalt, and he found it to be one of the best values in the stellar Civic lineup. Powered by a hybrid system pairing a 2.0-liter Atkinson-cycle engine and electric motor, it delivers 200 horsepower and 232 lb-ft of torque. With 50 mpg city and 45 highway, it's one of the most efficient compact cars available, while at the same time delivering laudable performance. Four drive modes, a refined suspension, a 9-inch infotainment screen with Google built-in, a 12-speaker Bose audio system, and full Honda Sensing safety suite round out a well-equipped, tech-forward package. He'll offer a full report. Host Jack Nerad took the wheel of the 2025 Mazda CX-5 Carbon Turbo, a $39,455 compact SUV with 227 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque from a turbocharged 2.5-liter engine. All-wheel drive, a six-speed automatic, and premium touches like Terracotta leather-trimmed seats and a 10-speaker Bose system give it a refined edge. Though fuel economy sits at 24 mpg combined, the CX-5 impresses with its sophistication, design, and feature-rich value. And it is arguably the most fun-to-drive vehicle in its segment. At the same time, its price might surprise -- or even shock-- you. At the top of the news, we detail the debut of the 2026 Lexus RZ, now offered in three EV variants, including the new 402-horsepower F SPORT. Lexus has improved its range, added fast charging, and introduced performance upgrades like “M Mode,” which simulates manual shifting. Meanwhile, the 2026 Honda CR-V gets tech and trim upgrades, including a new off-road-ready TrailSport Hybrid model with standard AWD and improved fuel economy. All trims now offer wireless phone integration and larger screens. Not to be outdone, Toyota pulled the wraps off the all-new 2026 RAV4, the CR-V's chief nemesis, and we'll have more details on its gala introduction next week. In this week's auto-political news, a U.S. Senate resolution could overturn California's authority to enforce its 2035 all-EV mandate. Backed by automakers and dealers, supporters argue it protects national market consistency, while critics warn it could undercut state autonomy and slow EV adoption. Another legal battle has emerged between the California New Car Dealers Association and Honda/Sony over direct-to-consumer Afeela EV sales. The CNCDA claims these sales violate franchise laws requiring manufacturers to work through licensed dealers. The case may set a major precedent as EV startups and joint ventures explore nontraditional retail models. Also in the news, General Motors has halted U.S. exports to China, citing trade tensions and the winding down of its premium Durant Guild brand. GM will continue operating in China through joint ventures, but this move signals shifting priorities amid rising tariffs and regulatory uncertainty. This week's guest, Andre Ravinowich, Senior Manager of Product Planning at Hyundai, joins the show to talk about the all-new Hyundai Ioniq 9, a large electric SUV set to broaden Hyundai's EV lineup with space, performance, and tech innovation. Nerad drove the new battery-electric wonder during a Hyundai-sponsored event in Savannah, Georgia. To close out the show, the listener question of the week comes from Stanley in Macon, Georgia, who asks: “What's your take on the return of sedans and smaller cars? Are they gone for good, or do you think there will be a comeback for cars?” Jack and Chris weigh in, noting that while crossovers dominate, rising vehicle prices, tighter parking, and renewed interest in efficiency could trigger a modest resurgence for sedans and compacts—especially hybrids and EVs. Jack Nerad's newest book Jack is now offering his newest crime novel, Only One Thing Stays the Same,

Mission Incredible: Flying Around Maine in Nissan Z NISMO

America on the Road

Co-Host Chris Teague was confronted with a very difficult task in our lead road test this week. His job was to pilot the 2024 Nissan Z NISMO around the twists and turns of Maine's backroads. Sure, it was a tough assignment, but, as has so often been said, someone had to do it. The 2024 Nissan Z NISMO enhances the iconic sports car with track-ready performance, featuring a 420-horsepower twin-turbo engine, upgraded suspension, and revised aerodynamics. How did Teague enjoy the experience? Did he apply for hazardous-duty pay? He'll have more in his full 6-foot-tall report. When Ford introduced the Bronco Sport small SUV, its executives weren't certain that its buyers were ready for heavy-duty off-road ability. But several years into the program, they are more than ready to believe it. Why? Because their customers asked them for it. As a result, the 2025 Bronco Sport can be equipped with its own Sasquatch package, which mimics the full-on off-road gear available on the full-size Bronco. While that's good news, the even better news is that Host Jack Nerad got a chance to drive a 2025 Bronco Sport with the Sasquatch package on some very challenging terrain in Eastern Tennessee. That's the site of Ford's latest Bronco Off-Roadeo adventure playground. As part of a small group of auto journalists, he got behind the wheel of the 2025 Bronco Sport Sasquatch to see if it could stand up to the rigors of some tough, rock-strewn, water-soaked trails. He'll share his findings in this episode. This week our special guest is Andre Ravinowich, Hyundai's Senior Manager of Product Planning. Jack Nerad spoke with him at length about the exciting changes to the 2025 Hyundai Tucson, one of the brand's most important vehicles, at a recent event in Los Olivos, California. We think you'll enjoy hearing what he has to say. In the news this week, J.D. Power has lowered its electric vehicle sales forecast for this year and next. We'll have the details on what's going on and why EVs aren't selling as well as many so-called experts expected. In a related story, a major global automaker has just abandoned its pledge to be all-electric in 2030. We'll tell you the brand, what they just announced and offer our comments. On a happier note, an important Japanese brand is vowing to increase its North American presence with an onslaught of new vehicles. We'll have the details on that coming up. And there was sadness in the Nerad household as we said goodbye to a vehicle that served our family well for 25 years. We'll have a few words about Clifford coming up in this episode of America on the Road. America on the Road is brought to you by Driving Today.com, Mercury Insurance, and EMLandsea.com , the publisher of Nerad's latest book, Dance in the Dark, which is available HERE on Amazon.com

In this professional video, we talk to automotive expert Maziar Adl about how product planning in the automotive industry is evolving. Maziar discusses how technological changes are disrupting traditional automotive product planning. With the rise of electric and autonomous vehicles, automakers have to plan for future product lines that meet new customer needs and expectations. This requires more efficient processes to drive profitability. Maziar highlights several key strategies for automotive product managers to adopt. First, take advantage of new technologies like AI and data analytics to gain insights into customer preferences and anticipate future trends. Use these insights to make data-driven product planning decisions. Second, improve collaboration across departments and with suppliers. As vehicles become more complex, product managers need to work closely with R&D, manufacturing, and suppliers to ensure components are available and new products are viable. Strong partnerships and open communication are key. Finally, Maziar emphasizes the importance of a long-term product roadmap informed by a clear company vision. Product managers should map out product lines 3-5 years in advance, while also remaining agile enough to adapt to changes. A long-term outlook will help avoid component shortages and optimize new product launches. Overall, this video provides valuable perspectives on how automotive product managers can leverage technology, enhance collaboration, and take a forward-looking approach to product planning. By implementing these strategies, automakers can gain a competitive advantage and thrive in this new era of transportation. Staying ahead of trends and anticipating challenges are essential to success.

Autonomous vehicles are in the news this week, and we will tell you who Ford has partnered with. One of them is a household name not usually associated with automotive, and another is a leading-edge tech company. And there's news about how Tesla owners feel about their vehicles from a very credible source. Do they love their EVs or hate them? We'll have the definitive answer. This week our special guest is Olabisi Boyle. She is the VP of Product Planning and Mobility Strategy for Hyundai Motor North America where she is responsible for guiding the strategic direction of the brand in the U.S. Hyundai has had a lot of winners in the past few years, and we expect they will have another with the 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz small pickup/adventure vehicle. Host Jack Nerad speaks with her at length about Hyundai's recent successes and plans for the future. In the road test segment, co-host Chris Teague will take a long look at the Ford F-150 Powerboost. Ford has taken a big gamble with its large pickup, which is not only its bestseller but also the bestselling vehicle in America. Is the gamble paying off? Chris Teague and Jack Nerad will discuss that. Also in this week's road tests, Jack Nerad had a chance to get a very early drive of the revised 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan compact SUV. The changes are both subtle and substantial, and he'll tell all about them. Photo: Jack R. Nerad

Listen to Derek's previous episodes https://remarkableresults.biz/?s=%22derek+kaufman%22 (HERE). Key Talking Points Electric vehicles- HEV- hybrid/mild hybrid/plug-in hybrid, BEV Battery Electric Vehicles. ICE- internal  combustion engine, VIO- vehicles in operation, VMT- vehicle miles traveled  Forecasting EV sales- stay in touch with the Tier 1 and Tier 2 suppliers to the automotive OEMs to keep current on new product development and that has made a continually increase the estimates over the last 3 years.  Hybrids have been growing in share but see them peaking and being replaced by mild hybrids – 48-volt vehicles with electric motors that can propel the car for a short amount of range A small number of plug-in hybrids will get you even more range, but they quickly peak and are replaced by BEVs – overall, BEVs eventually replace the various types of hybrid powertrains over a longer period of time than 2030.  Consumer demand- including governmental incentives. 2X Scenario- based on governments around the world, including the USA, mandating the sales of BEVs or bans on ICEs. OEMs- globally there are about 500 BEV models either in production or due for launch in the next 2 years. 3% to 9% BEV market share  In 2020 there were 1.3 million BEV cars sold in China and they are forecasting 1.8M for 2021- there were about 300,000 BEVs sold in the USA last year. 142 battery plants under construction globally- 107 of them are in China Senate bill to increase the $7500 BEV incentive to $12,000 but only for BEVs made in the USA by union labor(like a Ford 150 Lightning), if the car is made in the USA but with non-union labor (like a BMW i3) it is $10,000 and if it is made outside the USA it remains at $7500 and they took off the 200,000 vehicles per year cap and replaced it with a 50% share of the market for all BEVs cap If the US federal government mandates BEV sales, the numbers move to 38% by 2030, 57% by 2045 then on up to 67% in 2040, and 0ver 90% by 2050 The baseline forecast shows BEVs representing about 5% of the VIO in 2030, 11% by 2035, 18% in 2040, and 34% in 2050  The 2X Scenario0 BEV VIO numbers of 8% in 2030, 18% in 2035 then up to 30% of the VIO in 2040, and 48% in 2050 26% of the vehicles in the VIO have some form of brake job each year. BEV will change that 26% with regenerative braking, 50% reduction and apply it to the ratio of BEVs in the VIO and you get that overall, brake jobs will decrease about 2.5% in 2030, 9% in 2040, and 22% in 2050 Engine tune-ups- BEVs decrease engine tune-ups by 100% but when the model takes into account the number of ICE vehicles still in the VIO even in 2050 you will see tune-ups reduce about 5% in 2030, 18% in 40, and 36% in 2050.   Thanks to Derek Kaufman for his contribution to the aftermarket's premier podcast. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   VW INCREASES TO $86 BILLION SPENDING ON EVS "Volkswagen Group is boosting spending on technologies for electric and self driving cars, while increasing production of EVs in its German home market. Investments in battery-powered vehicles, autonomous driving and related future technologies will rise to about 73 billion euros ($86 billion), or half the company's 150-billion euro budget through 2025, VW said in a statement." says Automotive News Europe: "That's up from 60 billion euros a year ago, or 40 percent of investments planned at the time. The investment is part of VW Group's new five-year planning cycle, approved by the supervisory board on Friday. The investment envisages production of about 26 million full-electric cars in Europe, China and the U.S. by 2030.  Under the plan presented on Friday, VW is doubling its planned spending on digitalization to 27 billion euros, as it seeks to develop a seamless, software-based vehicle operating system. This includes spending on the group's Car.Software organization launched earlier this year. The goal is to build a proprietary software stack, which will be deployed in Audi’s Artemis project to develop an advanced, self-driving electric vehicle by 2024. The company's own share in software will increase to 60 percent from 10 percent, VW said."   https://europe.autonews.com/automakers/vw-increases-spending-electric-self-driving-cars-86-billion   DAIMLER WILL SHRINK WITH SHIFT TO ELECTRIC AND AUTONOMOUS CARS "Daimler will be a smaller company five years from now, focused on capturing recurring revenues with software-based services as Mercedes-Benz seeks to redefine luxury in an era of electric self-driving cars, Chief Executive Ola Kaellenius said." according to Autoblog; "Jobs will disappear because it takes less time to build an electric car than a conventional gasoline or diesel version. That's because an electric car's battery and motor have only 200 components, compared with at least 1,400 parts found in a combustion engine and transmission, according to analysts at ING. The shift away from fossil fuel requires the carmaker to double down on efficiency so it can free up resources to build electric and self-driving cars, Kallenius said. Daimler also wants to offer customers new digital services so it can make money with new, recurring sources of revenue such as assisted driving functionalities and infotainment services when it unveils a new vehicle car operating system in 2024."   https://www.autoblog.com/2020/11/15/daimler-smaller-evs-autonomous-cars-five-year-future/   FIA OPENS TENDER FOR WRC HYBRID CHARGING INFRASTRUCTURE "For the Rally1 cars (which the current top WRC class will be called), the hybrid system developed between Compact Dynamics and Kreisel will come with a white label-supplied ‘plug-In’ charging infrastructure. The 3.9kWh battery in the car is supplied with an 8kW charging unit that will allow the battery to go from 20% of charge to 80% in approximately 20 minutes. A 15-minute ‘top-up’ is proposed for competitors at each service point, which the FIA notes will afford a brand an opportunity to display their offer." says Professional Motorsport World: "The power generation and charging facilities will also incorporate power supplies for teams’ garages, for lighting, heating, catering and welding operations. The FIA notes that tenderers have to plan for an average of 10-20 Rally1 cars on each event."   https://www.pmw-magazine.com/news/race-series-news/fia-opens-tender-for-wrc-hybrid-charging-infrastructure.html   NISSAN QASHQAI TO RECEIVE E-POWER HYBRID DRIVE "Nissan has provided a first preview of the third-generation Qashqai, which is scheduled for launch next year. The compact SUV will be the first Nissan model in Europe to be equipped with the e-Power hybrid drive but a plug-in hybrid is not planned for the time being." reports electrive: "The e-Power drive is a serial hybrid system, not a parallel hybrid as in the HEVs from Toyota. In the drive technology that Nissan is already using on its home market in Japan, the wheels are always driven purely electrically. The main energy source of the drive system is not the battery, but a gasoline engine that functions exclusively as a generator."   Ponz Pandikuthira, Vice President Product Planning at Nissan in Europe: "“In Japan, they typically don’t go above 50-65mph. Here in Europe, you do 80-85mph on a regular basis, At those speeds, you end up depleting the battery very quickly, so the range extender has to work really hard to keep the energy going and then it goes out of its range of efficiency”. It’s not yet clear how the Japanese company solved this problem."   And yet, no Qashqai PHEV.   https://www.electrive.com/2020/11/13/new-nissan-qashqai-to-receive-e-power-hybrid-drive/   UPCOMING ELECTRIC GENESIS EG80 TO GET WIRELESS CHARGING OPTION "Hyundai Motor Group's Genesis is working on its first all-electric car "eG80", based on the group's new E-GMP platform, and according to the latest news, it will offer a wireless charging option." says InsideEVs: "Genesis would like to be a pioneer in wireless charging and to achieve that it will partner with WiTricity, which supplies the technology compliant with the new SAE J2954 standard. Derek is also an entrepreneur. He founded C3 Network, LLC in 1997 to help clients launch new products in the transportation industry. Today, Derek is a Managing Partner at Schwartz Advisors, LLC doing Mergers & Acquisition support and company growth work in the auto and heavy-duty aftermarket. He continues his role as President of C3 Network. Derek serves on the boards of several companies and is a regular conference speaker at auto aftermarket and trucking conferences. Listen to Derek's previous episodes (https://remarkableresults.biz/?s=%22derek+kaufman%22) . Talking Points: BEVs or Battery Electric Vehicles have only battery power – no engine at all PHEVs are Plug-in Hybrids – they have battery packs that can be charged from the grid and have enough battery power to propel the vehicle for a certain number of miles before their internal combustion engine kicks in to keep the vehicle moving Mild and Micro Hybrids – these are hybrid vehicles where the ICE engine drives an alternator to build up a battery pack. In mild hybrids, the motors can add power to the ICE power train. In micro hybrids like stop-start systems you have a battery that will drive a starter to bring the ICE engine back on after it stops to save fuel at an intersection. In the USA, about 2.1% of our sales were full BEVs in 2019. To put that in perspective, the number one country in the world for BEV sales was Norway at 49% -- a strong market for Tesla Number 2 was Iceland at 19%, then you fall down 8.2% for number 3 Sweden. China is driving hard for BEVs but they were only at 4.2% last year. It is interesting to note that if California was its own country – and lots of people would say it is – it would be right up with Sweden at over 8% BEV sales in 2019. If you go to San Diego, or sections of LA or the Bay Area – you would think that Tesla has a 30% market share – California is the epicenter of their sales. Our estimate is that only .22% of cars in shops are BEVs today and that only grows to under 4% in the next ten years. The European Union is all in on electric drive – and they are driving the market by imposing a 95 gram per kilometer CO2 emission limit on vehicle manufacturers. You have everyone trying to sell cars in Europe rushing to add BEVs to their product lines even though the consumers in that market are continuing to buy high powered ICEs and even turning now to SUVs. So BEVs are going to be money-losing propositions for a lot of years for OEMs in Europe. The UK just announced a ban on ICE gas and diesel engines as of 2035 – that was pulled up from 2040 France has a ban slated for 2040 – but Paris is blocking ICE cars by 2030 China isn’t doing a nationwide ban but is talking about regional bans – and they are making it really difficult or impossible to build any new ICE production capacity in the country. The US has been lagging other countries for a number of reasons – our geography makes the whole issue of battery range a tougher issue than in a lot of the European countries where you have less chance of even reaching a car’s range limitWe’re a light truck and SUV country – over 70% of new car sales are light trucks in this country so I think the adoption of BEVs will change once those vehicle designs include electric drive. So we’re projecting a slower climb for the USA – the Schwartz Advisors model is showing 16% BEV sales by 2035. Rivian as a true inflection point for BEVs in this country and maybe in the world.R.J. Scaringe in Detroit has done a tremendous job of attracting both people and investment...

Not all product life-cycle functions drive planning for inbound logistics, manufacturing, or outbound distribution. Or if they do, they do so without collaborating across the organization, or they do so without content knowledge of the supply-chain operations they are planning. This is one of our main challenges and therefore is a significant SCA opportunity. In this episode, Robert will explain how to expand the role and function of the Product Life-Cycle Planning processes, and how to connect this role with the other three core business processes to create an extended value-stream perspective that creates maximum customer value at the lowest cost.

Few companies were faced with harder look than the group known as the "Big Three," American automakers Ford, Chrysler, and General Motors. While these companies struggled, others, like the Nissan Motor Company, were looking past the crisis to determine what kinds of cars Americans would want to buy when credit became available again. This week get ready to be "electrified" and you'll be "shocked" at how much it's going to cost the industry. Our two guests will both be talking about the future CAFE standards that automakers are going to have to meet in the U.S. Jay Baron is the Chairman, President and CEO of the Center for Automotive Research (CAR). According to CAR's findings, in order to meet future fuel economy requirements, prices of cars are going to skyrocket. We'll be asking what cost the regulations will have on jobs. We'll also be asking what technologies will enable us to meet those requirements, and clearly our next guest has part of that answer. Mark Perry is the Director of Product Planning and Strategy for Nissan, and he is intimately familiar with the all-electric Nissan LEAF. The company can't seem to get enough of these electric cars out the door, and we want to find out what's going on.
