And a special thanks goes to Carlisle Ford Nationals Show Manager Ken Appell (who promoted the live recording session and put it on top of Saturday's action-packed show program), and Mustang Unleashed Influencer and noted Ford Performance photographer Joe Deladvitch (who managed all the episode's recording duties). Of course, Carlisle hosts the world's largest all-Ford show each June, featuring nearly every Ford, Lincoln, Mercury and even Fords from all over the world on the nearly 3,500-vehicle show field for a three-day extravaganza in central Pennsylvania of all things related to the Blue Oval. As usual, all sorts of other special events and attractions were planned this year – with 3,538 total entries, the second largest in the show's history, beyond seeing all the hottest new Ford products – even the Mustang GTD – and thousands of classic and collectible Fords on display. Those included a 60th Anniversary Bronco Showcase celebrating the past, present, and future of the iconic SUV; a 50th Anniversary celebration of the Starsky & Hutch Torino, featuring three screen-used vehicles, nearly two dozen additional examples on the Showfield, and one of the stars of the television series, Antonio Fargas, who portrayed Huggy Bear. There were also displays commemorating the legacies of Roush, the Ford Taurus, and the Olympic Sprint special editions as well as all the other regular attractions such as the Vehicle Parades, Select Displays, Car Corral, Manufacturers Midway, the massive Flea Market and Vendors area, great food, the Women's Oasis and even Kids Activities. And don't forget the Club Challenge, the Coolest Club Hangout Award and the Club Mixer info-session hosted by Team Mustang's John Clor with help from podcast partner Mike Rey – plus the Autocross, Burnout & Exhaust contests, Celebrity Choice Awards, the annual Downtown Carlisle Parade, Park & Party and of course Sunday's big Carlisle Awards Presentations. Messy Family Podcast : Catholic conversations on marriage and family

Play is the work of childhood.  Summary It seems like in today's world, parents are judged by how many activities their kids are in and how committed the whole family is to those activities.  We see this as leading to complete burnout for parents, but more importantly, it robs children of the joy of unsupervised, spontaneous time to just play.  We explain in this podcast what play is and why it is so important for children to engage in. The beautiful thing about play is that parents should NOT be involved!  It is one thing that we can do for our kids that requires less of us, not more.  Parents need to learn that kids must take risks, make choices, and be independent from adults.  And this means less supervision, not more.  Listen in to this conversation where we try to strike a balance between keeping kids busy in a healthy way and giving them space to be bored and make good choices.     Key Takeaways Play is essential for a child's development. It is “freely chosen and directed by the participants and undertaken for its own sake, not to achieve something” - Dr. Peter Gray You need to be intentional about choosing your child's activities based on their developmental needs.  Kids under 12 really don't need structured activities - only do them if they work for your lifestyle and are not a cause of stress in the family Don't allow external forces to impose false expectations on your involvement.   Encourage your child to persevere even if an activity is difficult or not what they expected, but have the common sense to know when enough is enough. Know the adults that are around your child recognizing that especially in the teen years these people can become mentors for them for good or for bad.    Couple Discussion Questions Share with your spouse your experience with structured activities (sports, theater, lessons, etc).  What would you like to repeat? What would you like to avoid? What activities are our children involved in?  Are they developmentally appropriate for them?  How can we encourage more play among our children?  Are there other families who would join us in this?    Resources: Play Deprivation Is A Major Cause of the Teen Mental Health Crisis By JON HAIDT AND PETER GRAY https://www.afterbabel.com?utm_source=navbar&utm_medium=web

Looping back to jiu jitsu again (also a metaphor for other things. And a complete mirror for me) - I'm tempted to say, well, it's me who has decided that this is good for them. And clearly, it's just not their thing. Let's try another activity. Or no activities. And that's probably true on some level, I suppose. But I'm also feeling that they haven't actually experienced really doing jiu jitsu. Because they have been so caught up in “I don't like going with this particular kid. They always go too hard. Why don't I win medals? I'm too tired. That coach doesn't like me,” and on and on and on.  So it doesn't feel clean or right to say just quit at this point. But they seem to be moving further into the story with increasing struggle, and my suggestions or attempts to “explain what's really going on here” (shockingly) have not been helpful. Also, won't this cycle just repeat itself with the next activity they try? So I guess that's my question… Can I help a little kid come more into reality? And now after writing all of that, it's seeming like I should just keep using this as a mirror.
