What I want to tell you about today is a new podcast we have over on dialog.fm. Now Dialog is a podcast about marketing in the age of the customer and anything that goes along with those kinds of things. So, if you are in a B2B sales or marketing role you will probably find this useful. If you’re in an executive leadership role of a B2B company then you definitely will want to check this out there are there a lot of things like #ConversationalMarketing, account-based marketing that we’re going to touch on because sometimes they get reduced to a tip or a tactic that is just so granular. But there’s a lot more to these kinds of concepts and we’re going to break them down. We’re going to understand a little bit more together about why one might want to apply some this to their business; and even go through some mini courses on how to actually do it (and not just from the tactical marketing ops perspective). It’s about how are we going to execute a new way of doing business together so if that is up your alley you’ll be able to find a link to the show here …and since you’re on the inside here if you leave a review for the new show and send it to Chris@Chrishandy.blog (that’s my email) then you will get a special something from me

Natalie Eckdahl, MBA, has been a guide, supporter and cheerleader for Shannon on her journey to create The Connected Yoga Teacher podcast. Shannon hired Natalie for her services as a business coach, feeling she could use some expert advice along with an accountability partner. This helped Shannon immensely when taking on her vision to build a platform for yoga teachers. Natalie is a business coach, professional facilitator, keynote speaker and host of the Biz Chix Podcast which iTunes featured as a top New Business Podcast in March 2014. She has over 20 years of business experience and works with female entrepreneurs to build their businesses through money mindset and social media strategies, all while recognizing her clients' family and individual goals. This year Natalie successfully created and ran a Biz Chix Live Event, a 3-day Leadership Training for Women Entrepreneurs and has another set to run next November 2018. If you struggle with charging for your services as a yoga teacher you are not alone. On this episode Natalie and Shannon discuss the importance of finding your niche, defining your services a charity, hobby or business and charging clients for your services accordingly with confidence. Also covered is the concept of “passive” and “active” income along with the pros and cons of both business styles and many more nuggets of wisdom. 06:10 Is your business a charity, a hobby or a business- all are valid but intention should be clear 10:05 Feeling conflicted about charging yoga students for a spiritual, healing practice 11:10 Offerings you don't have to charge for (articles, podcasts, etc.) are great but don't need to do that in order to justify charging clients- your competence justifies charging for your services 12:10 Take a moment to revisit childhood messages about money, confront them, do you still agree with messages? Maybe agreeing with them without conscious thought and it may be shaping your business 13:40 Challenging the idea of “passive income” (online videos, books, etc.) as a gold mine versus what Natalie calls “active income” (consultation work, teaching yoga classes, etc.) 21:05 The fear around finding your yoga niche and the benefits of doing so 23:50 Shannon's niching down process 24:45 Creating a niche isn't about excluding others 25:45 Natalie's niching down process 28:50 Adjusting your brand to your newfound niche- Natalie calls our worry around this “The Spotlight Effect” 33:00 It's okay not to serve everyone, specializing helps attract clients 35:30 Naming and marketing your classes to attract the clients you are seeking to serve 39:15 Niching down allows your network (friends and family, business associates, etc.) know who they can refer to you 39:55 Natalie's top money mindset advice for small business owners- open a business bank account, get a bookkeeper, and more to build confidence as a business owner 45:05 How to get connect with Natalie 46:50 Shannon's closing thoughts Links Natalie's Biz Chix Website Podcast: Biz Chix 216: Small Business Reality- Is this a Business, Hobby or Charity? Podcasting in the Media: Teen Titans I want to thank Caine Door of the Adventure Frequency for letting me know that: "In the newly released animated film: Teen Titans the Judas contract (Warner Brothers) Kevin Smith is in the movie as himself interviewing a member of the team on his podcast and it's good. He's a known fanboy so he has great questions and brings some levity to the end of the movie after the big final battle scene. I think it says something that they make time for podcasting in the movie." This is just another example of podcasting being more and more mainstream. Thanks to Caine for the heads up. Thress Years Into Podcasting, She's Not Where She Thought's She's Be, She's in an Event Better Place Natalie Echdahl Almost Quit Podcasting - She's Glad She Didn't Natalie Eckdahl, MBA, is a business coach, professional facilitator, keynote speaker and the host of the Biz Chix Podcast which iTunes featured as a top New Business Podcast in March 2014. Three years ago she went to social media marketing world, she joined John Lee Dumas' Podcaster's Paradise and started following "the formula" that everyone at the time did. However, it didn't reap the results that she expected. At one point Natalie launched a mastermind group, and not a single listener signed up. As she unfolds her story today, you will hear how Natalie handles disappointments and turns them into learning experiences. You will learn: I love Natalie's opening. In less than a minute you understand what the show is about, where it's going, and who it's for. My guess is she used Music Radio Creative I also love her closing call to action which uses her two young sons. It makes it memorable and makes her even more human. Natalie Eckdahl, MBA, is a business coach, professional facilitator, keynote speaker and host of the Biz Chix Podcast which iTunes featured as a top New Business Podcast in March 2014. Connect with Natalie and/or join her Facebook group for women entrepreneurs here. ____________________ Set and Achieve Big Goals In this episode you get to hear Natalie coaching Shannon, the host of The Connected Yoga Teacher Podcast, on how to set and achieve big goals. Shannon shares her notes from that coaching call here. 1. Set Quarterly Goals That are Measurable and Achievable Look at the next quarter (or next 90 days) and choose 2 - 4 goals. Half for your business and the others for your personal life. This might be a revenue goal, a list building goal or a goal to create something new. Set goals that are measurable, so that someone from the outside could literally check in to see if you hit your goals. Setting achievable goals, that seem possible is a critical step in this process. Shannon shares in this episode how she felt with having a goal that was reliant on others (booking consultations) versus goals she was 100% responsible for. Example: Shannon set 2 goals for her business. 1 - Have a bank of 5 episodes edited before podcast launch day. 2 - Book 9 new yoga teacher consultations before the end of March. 2. Create Weekly Goals What activities can you do that will help you to reach your goals? Count out the weeks ahead (for example April, May and June of 2017 has 13 weeks). Use your calendar to mark your weekly goals down and share them with an accountability partner. Example: Every Monday is The Connected Yoga Teacher Live Show - at 12:30pm EST. From 9am - 12pm on those days is time for preparing the show notes and website article to go along with the episode. 3. Marketing and Your Avatar Are you marketing to an avatar that is going to pay you? Does your current network know about the work that you do? Would you like to try Facebook live as a marketing tool? Facebook live is getting a lot of exposure right now. Is there a time when you can have a weekly live video? Do you have regular communication with your avatar, (like a weekly email)? See Shannon's weekly live show schedule here. 4. Create Daily Goals From Your Weekly Goals Block time off on your daily calendar that relate to your weekly goals. Account for the preparation time needed. What other revenue generating activities do you need to put on your calendar? When can you do follow up emails and communication related to your goal? Remember to block off family time (driving included). Plan for at least an hour of uninterrupted quiet for creating content. Example: Shannon needs to block off 4-6 hours per week to get an episode together for the podcast. Productivity Tips Shrink your to do list -- if there are 10 things on your list, choose 3 items to get done today. Realize that some days you can only get 1 thing done and that is okay. Turn off your notifications on your phone and your computer. Use a program to shut off distracting social media platforms (Shannon talked about the Freedom app that she uses). Stop checking email and turn off the notifications. Move your cell/home phone to a different room. Notice where you spend your time - remember to block off time for grocery shopping and coordinating schedules and personal appointments. Be easier on yourself. You can only get so much done in a day. When your to-do list is too large - we get paralyzed and we don't know where to begin.
As busy moms and entrepreneurs the thought of ever having to step outside of our regular lives or businesses can seem pretty impossible at times. But the reality is, we NEED to give ourselves space away from normal life and business to reset, get refreshed and live a little! In preparation for a busy several weeks of travel coming up for me, I am hopping into this episode with NJ to discuss all the ways we as boss moms can prepare our businesses for travel so that you can have a leg up next time you have somewhere to go! Listen + subscribe on iTunes // Stitcher The biggest thing to think about when it comes to preparing your business for travel is how you can not only prepare for the time you'll be away, but also for your return. There is nothing worse than letting things get backlogged so you end up having to work when you weren't planning to, letting things fall through the cracks, OR having a great time away, but having to jump back into chaos immediately upon returning. Here are a few of our best tips that will help set you and your business up for success the next time you travel! 1. Create space in your calendar During the weeks leading up to a trip or vacation you want to be proactive about how you'll be spending your time before traveling. Pull your calendar out and identify what things can be taken off and what you'll need to say no to in order to create space for you to make the necessary preparations for leaving your business. Get your ducks in a row little by little leading up to your trip and you won't feel like a crazy minute trying to get everything figured out right as you're heading out the door! 2. Work IN your business instead of ON your business. More than likely it will be in your best interest to focus on the inner workings of your business and stay in "create & sustain" mode versus focusing on business growth and adding high level things to your plate right before traveling. Because honestly, who needs that extra stress? Be intentional about taking care of the things inside your house versus the things outside (you can do that when you get back!) 3. Determine if you will work while you travel. Sometimes there will be instances where traveling provides you the perfect opportunity to work on things in your business that you wouldn't normally get to in regular life. Other times there are things you will have to do while you're gone, such as checking into a Facebook group that you run or hopping on the phone for client calls. But there are other times (ie: vacation) where you won't want to (and shouldn't!) touch a phone or computer. Figure these things out in advance. Decide what you will and won't do, and prepare yourself and your business to accommodate that decision. 4. Get your automation systems in place. Automation is a beautiful, beautiful thing for us busy mom entrepreneurs on a normal basis, but it's especially amazing during times of travel. Figure out what can be automated while you're away and do the work to get those systems in place and running so you don't have to even think about it until you return. 5. Clearly define roles & operations information to your team. If your business is to the point where you have a team of people supporting you, make sure to prepare them for your absence and set them up for success while you're gone. Clearly define who will be responsible for what, make sure they have what they need, and make sure they have access to everything they'll need access to (including you, in cases of emergency!) Pro tip: don't try to micromanage and allow your team members to own their roles. While we can't promise that if you do all these things that your life, business and trip will go off without a hitch, we can guarantee that it will be a whole lot easier than if you didn't prepare in advance ;) Referenced in the Show: ThredUp Lilah Higgins, The Higgins Creative Natalie Gingrich Boss Mom Minis Raising Your Business Webinar Kelsey Murphy Pat Flynn Danielle Roberts Boss Mom Feature in INC.com 50 Shades Darker Sparkle. In case you hadn't noticed, online courses have become all the rage in the last few years. Seriously - you can find a course online for just about ANYTHING. While there are tons of benefits to being able to find quality information and training on pretty much any subject you want, when it comes to choosing courses as investments into your business there are definitely things you want to consider before pulling the trigger. In this episode we are chatting about best practices when it comes to buying courses and then how to actually leverage them once you have purchased. Because no one likes wasting time or money, right?! 1. Don't get caught up in the hype. Oftentimes affiliate marketing will play a big role in the overall marketing strategy of course launches and how it can be easy to get sucked up into the hype course affiliates are putting out there. It's important to "vet" your sources and try to determine if they genuinely love the course....or if they're just greedy and in it for a payday. 2. Research the course creator - do your due diligence! These days anyone can make a course about anything - you don't need a degree in rocket science to put together some slides with Wikipedia'd information and upload it to an online platform to sell. When you discover a course you are interested in, do your due diligence in terms of properly vetting the course creator. Ask yourself, "Do I trust this person? Do they have the chops to teach me x, y and z?" Evaluate the actual reasons you have for why this person is the right person to teach you what you're wanting to know. Do you research and sell it to yourself. 3. Determine if the course will actually be worth your time. Many business owners when they're just starting out try to learn and do #allthethings because they don't want to outsource tasks until they feel financially capable of taking that step. Learning how to do #allthethings via courses seems like a good starting point - and often times, it is! But you have to consider the very real possibility that there are some things you just shouldn't spend your time doing because they will never fall in line with your gifts and will actually continue to waste your time rather than make your time more profitable. 4. Determine if your business really requires this skill or information. It can be easy to think that your business needs #allthethings in order to be successful in the online space....but that's hardly ever true. There are tons of different approaches and strategies and tools out there that can help you grow your business....but you won't need all of them, only the ones that are right for you and your business. Don't just invest in a course because you think you need to. 5. Identify your "course personality." Not all course takers are created equally! Typically there are two types of course takers: the "Doers" and the "Thinkers." The Doers just want to get in, zero in on the parts that they want, devour them and then act on what they learned. The Thinkers want to go through systematically and thoroughly consume all the information so they can fully own it and then implement. Some courses are laid out to accommodate both types of people. Some are not. You don't want to get stuck with a course that isn't in a format that will be conducive to your course personality type. If you aren't sure, reach out to the course creator to ask! 6. Assess whether the course aligns with your business goals. Sometimes a course will seem like a good idea, but when you actually stop to think about it, maybe it's not the right time in your business to focus on whatever that course topic is. You need to make decisions in your business surrounding what you should be focusing on now. Ask yourself, "Will this course help me move me toward my current business goals or slow me down?" 7. Assess whether the course aligns with your calendar. The reality is that time is not an unlimited resource and even if we desperately want to be able to take a course that seems valuable, our calendar and schedule may simply not allow it. Be honest with yourself about the time you have and make decisions accordingly. 8. Recognize that you will have to do the work. Magic doesn't just suddenly happen the moment you hit the "buy" button and enroll in a course. Think of it like a college class. The professor will show up and impart his information to you, but you have to show up and do the work to actually get anything out of it. 9. Know what you want to get out of it before you buy Speaking of getting what you want out the course.....you'll want to know what exactly it is that you want to get out of it BEFORE you buy. Lay it out for yourself. What will this course help you accomplish in terms of moving your business forward? Is the primary focus to learn a skill? How will that skill help your business? What do you want it to gain you? Do you want more clients at the end? More confidence? More leads? Know what you want so you can stay focused as you move through the course. 10. Plan to follow through Too often people get jazzed about a new course, sign up.....and then let it sit there taking up space on the internet instead of in their brain or business. If you're going to be decisive in taking action to purchase a course, follow it up with blocking out time in your calendar to actually complete the course. Set yourself up for success the moment you purchase. The longer you wait, the less likely you are to actually leverage your investment. Let’s get real: running a home and running a business at the same time is really hard. What do you do when you’re the captain at the helm of both, and you start feeling like you’re going under? In this episode Dana and NJ are exploring their strengths and struggles when it comes to running their homes while running businesses, and you’ll hear them share some practical strategies that you can steal from the world of business and apply to how you run your home. Listen + subscribe on iTunes // Stitcher Staring at the wide space between where you are now and where you want to be in terms of how you’re running your home can be completely daunting. So, here are some practical ideas and ways to shift your approach and begin tackling things step-by-step. Assess the Situation You can’t figure out how to get to your destination if you don’t know where you are to begin with! Take a few minutes to brain dump out a huge master list of all the things you do in a day, from morning to night. Then, assess what areas you feel like you have under control and what areas you’re really struggling in, then you can begin tackling each area of struggle one at a time. Remember: you can’t change everything all at once, but you can significantly improve things by focusing on one area at a time and building out from there. Establish & Communicate Expectations Just as employees perform best when their job description and responsibilities are clearly outlined, children (and people in general) thrive when they know what is expected of them. If you find that your family often operates in a state of chaos, consider whether or not you’ve clearly outlined everyone’s “roles and goals,” as NJ suggests. Figure out how each person thrives best, and what the family needs as a whole to operate as optimally as possible. Make sure that each person’s role within the family is clearly defined, as well as the goals you’re all working toward, so each person can take ownership for their behavior and attitudes as members of the same family. Implement Automation It’s a well-known fact that implementing automation in your business saves you time and makes you more money because you’re able to spend more time doing those things that make you more money. Implementing automation in how we fun our homes can produce equally beneficial results in terms of saving you time, energy and stress. One great place to get automated is in your household finances. There is so much great technology out there today that allows you to set up things like automatic bill payments and automatic savings transfers. Utilize them to save time and keep you on track with your money! Shopping online can also save you boatloads of time and hassle as well. There are tons of great online grocery delivery services like Amazon Fresh, Amazon Prime or Thrive Market, and many regional grocery stores offer online shopping with pickup or delivery as well. Get Organized with Systems As with automations, having the right systems in place in your home can be the difference between constantly feeling like a chicken running around with its head cut off and feeling like the Superwoman you really are. Think about some of the bigger or recurring things you do in your life and figure out how to break them down into a system to keep things organized and streamlined. For example, NJ suggests putting together a master list of important annual family dates (birthdays, anniversaries, etc) and buying cards and stamps in bulk for the year so she’s always prepared and never gets in the weeds. There are also great tools out there like the My Proxy Fox app that allows you to outline your rhythms, routines, systems and important information related to your home and family, store it all in one easy-to-access place and share it with other family members, home service providers or caregivers. Figure out what systems will make the greatest impact in your home and family life, and schedule in some time to get those systems set up – we promise, you will thank yourself! Know (& Uphold!) Your Boundaries It’s important for everyone in an organization to know what the boundaries are, and for the leader to uphold those boundaries. Our children need to understand what the boundaries are and we need to be consistent in enforcing them for the wellbeing of everyone. Invite your kids to take an active role in respecting boundaries and explain to them why boundaries exist so they feel empowered to rise to the level of the expectations you’ve set. Affirm & Nurture Your People Everyone needs to be reminded and reassured from time to time that they are loved, valued and appreciated. Make sure that you are intentional about carving out time and space to connect and grow in your relationships with each member of your family. Building trust and depth of relationship will help ensure everyone wants to work together and there is a mutual understanding that everyone’s end goal is the same. The Wake Up Call In the Fall of 2015, Natalie and her husband sat down and discussed their financial goals for the upcoming year. Entrepreneur. Direct marketing superstar. Guinness Book of World Records holder and celebrity trainer. These are just a few of the ways to describe today's guest, Chalene Johnson. Chalene is the powerhouse behind 30 Day Push, Smart Success seminar, The Chalene Show podcast and she's the best-selling author of Push. From her first business of flipping cars to pay for college to her massively popular Turbo Jam fitness company, Chalene has been an entrepreneur. Her commitment has always been helping people, identifying needs and solving problems. In the early days of Turbo Jam's success she says she was doing everything for her business: responding to message board inquiries, creating new dance routines, filming, all of it. Sure it was a tremendous financial success for her, but she felt sick and miserable. When her first royalty check came in the mail, and it was a hefty $365,000, she fell on her couch and cried because she knew she couldn't keep it up. So over the next several years she and her husband completely reverse engineered her out of the Turbo Jam business, and then went through a lengthy negotiation process to sell it. The lesson she learned as a result? She didn't have to always do more or be more productive; once you learn how to do something you can outsource it and have others do it for you. Today she helps people do just that with her personal brand built on programs, podcasts, and her books. Her mission is to undo the example she set with her Turbo Jam business! She wants others to enjoy and have success in every area of their lives from their families to their businesses, and all points in between. She has created a movement, one of the pillars of which is her 30 day push program. This program was created based on her own personal success, and failures. Clearly she's someone who can set and achieve goals, she's a master at it. This program shows people how to set 10 goals for the year based on your own priorities. Then choose that one "push goal" that will have a domino affect on the others. Perhaps you want to take a month off to go somewhere with your family, that's one of your 10 goals. Chalene's program helps you look at the other 9 and figure out which is the goal that will push you forward to achieve the others. Those are just a few of the topics we cover on the today's episode. Chalene is a powerful wealth of information so tune in to hear the full scope of her knowledge. Essential Learning Points From This Episode:The All-Michigan Auto Swap Meet was her first business: true or false? Why Chalene was so miserable when she got her first royalty check. How she and her husband reverse engineered and sold their fitness business. Why a seasonal approach to growing a business is so impactful. Her biggest passion right now is podcasting. Why? What's the real reason I have 150 domain names...?! Much, much more! [Tweet ""Your personal brand is what people say about you when you're not around." @chrisducker"] In 2009 Chris Ducker was working 14 hours a day, 6 days a week. Fast forward a few years and he’s totally changed his life - and his business. He’s the author of the number 1 bestseller on Amazon, “Virtual Freedom” - and the host of the New Business Podcast. You can find him over at ChrisDucker.com. Today on Digital Marketing Radio we discuss personal branding strategy, with topics including: In the future, will building a personal brand be more important than building a business brand for small businesses? Say someone’s a fairly successful small business owner. But they don’t have much of a personal brand. What are some of the first steps when it comes to building a personal brand? What about reinventing a personal brand – is that different to building a personal brand from scratch? If I’m describing you to someone who’s never heard of you, how would you prefer to be described? Do you need to have a personal brand strapline? Is it actually easier to establish a personal brand? How would Chris Ducker prefer to be described when he isn't there? Is it important to try to 'control' the first page of Google results for your personal brand? If you have a business that is already branded with its own identity, should you change that to a personal brand? Software I couldn't live without What software do you currently use in your business that if someone took away from you, it would significantly impact your marketing success? Google Apps [Office suite software] Buffer App [Social media management] What software don't you use, but you've heard good things about, and you've intended to try at some point in the near future? Infusionsoft [Small business CRM] My number 1 takeaway What's the single most important step from our discussion that our listeners need to take away and implement in their businesses? Sit down and work out whether or not the personal brand is something that you really want long-term. You have got to understand that this isn't something that you can do for a year. This is your name. This is your reputation. Your personal brand is what people say about you when you're not around. It can't just come and go. You've got to commit to building a personal brand. You can't start a website and then never update it. It's important to truly do it if it's the right move for you right now. So I would sit down and work out - is this what I want to do? If it's not then that's fine as well - focus on building your business, and maybe you have a blog on your business website - whatever the case may be. A perfect example is the Virgin Group with Richard's blog. You've got Richard Branson blogging on there quite regularly as the CEO. But he doesn't do it at RichardBranson.com - he does it at Virgin.com/Richard. There's a difference. So really figure out if this is what you want to do, and if it is, go-ahead and run with it at 180 miles-per-hour until you've build out your hub. And start creating the content and serving that audience. And if it's not, then stick with what you're already doing. That's fine - just don't stress yourself out too much.
