Show Notes In this episode, we're joined by the talented Shelli Warren, a seasoned expert in helping service-based business owners cultivate exceptional leadership teams. Shelli's deep-rooted connection with Danielle is evident as they share a mutual commitment to empowering female entrepreneurs. Their insightful conversation delves into the challenges and rewards of forming a robust leadership team in the world of business. Things to Keep In Mind as a Leader Entrepreneurship often springs from a passion for one's craft, but the broader aspects of running a business require acquired skills. Shelli reassures us that it's absolutely normal not to adore every facet of being a business owner – a sentiment many can relate to. Acknowledging that you can't excel in all domains is crucial. Just as it's acceptable to seek financial advice, it's perfectly fine to seek help in the realm of team leadership. Shelli emphasizes that the pursuit of perfection in every role is an unrealistic expectation. Instead, the focus should be on building a leadership team that complements your strengths. Drawing parallels to the corporate world, she highlights that in service-based businesses, a leadership team comprises dedicated individuals who align with the mission and vision. These professionals are skilled in their anchor areas, forming a cohesive unit that drives growth. Creating a Leadership Team The journey to creating such a team starts with recognizing potential leaders within your existing ranks. Shelli advises to identify those who think like business owners, exhibit core values, and uphold high standards. Transparent communication is paramount: openly express your intent to develop leadership roles within the company. This not only fosters internal growth but also sets the stage for a smoother transition if external hires become necessary. Building Your Culture When conversations with potential leaders fall short, maintaining transparency is key. While it can be disheartening, the team should understand that changes are vital for progress. Shelli stresses that leadership transformation begins with the founder's vision for the team experience. Reflecting on personal team experiences helps define desired workplace dynamics, which should be communicated openly. Recognizing and commending behaviors that embody core values further nurtures a positive atmosphere. The Tough Conversations Tackling challenging conversations requires clear intention. Shelli advises a focused approach, highlighting the desired outcome and encouraging the individual to actively resolve issues. Avoid overwhelming the recipient by addressing incidents individually, offering constructive feedback that paves the way for improvement. Why Do I Want a Leadership Team? The significance of a leadership team's role in business expansion is undeniable. Shelli explains that this team acts as a bridge between the founder and the extended team, managing day-to-day operations and reporting back. As the founder concentrates on high-value tasks, a sense of self-sufficiency grows within the leadership team. This cascades into a culture where direct leaders guide their teams, leading to quality interactions and fewer interruptions for the founder. In conclusion, Shelli Warren's insights illuminate the path to creating a leadership team that complements your strengths, propelling your business to new heights. By embracing the idea that you can't excel in every aspect and fostering transparent communication, you empower your team to take ownership and drive success. “You're offering a career, not a J-O-B and we want people to come and join your team because they see the value in having a career, alongside you.” -Shelli Warren Finding the right people to build your dream team can be exhausting. It is often so overwhelming a process that we let desperation take hold. Seeking to grab anyone we can to help us, rather than taking the time to really find people who are the best fit. It is the goal of every business owner to eventually get out of the day-to-day, to better focus on business development, but we can't do that without a trusted team, and without belief in ourselves as the leaders of our own businesses. But if you are constantly dragging people behind you, they aren't adding positive value to your business. You need from the moment you post the interview, all the way through to the way your business practices, to paint a picture of the future, that the right people can connect to and feel at home in. Walking in step with you towards your goals, not holding you back from them. Shelli Warren, a team and leadership coach with Biz Chix and host of the Stacking Your Team podcast, is this week's featured guest. She discusses the importance of effective leadership, learning from your clients and building a business pointed firmly at the future, not dragging the past behind you. During this interview, you'll learn... How to paint a story of your business that makes others want to be a part of it The importance of building your team around the future, not the past The value of learning every lesson life has to teach you Learn more about Shelli and Biz Chix at this link. Wingnut Social: The Interior Design Business and Marketing Podcast
How do you build your interior design team when the current job market is a race for talent? Hiring stellar candidates isn't easy in a competitive market. So how do you appeal to your ideal hire? How do you retain top talent? What's the best method for promoting from within? These are just a few of the questions Shelli Warren answers in this episode of Wingnut Social! Shelli Warren is a team and leadership coach and the host of the BizChix Sisters podcast, “Stacking Your Team.” She leverages 26 years of experience to deliver multi-million dollar projects for billion-dollar brands. She helps small business owners hire, fire, and inspire a team of high-performers. You have to position a job as the best career opportunity anyone would come across. You need to market the job opportunities, team culture, and clients. You position yourself as a place of work where someone can have a career—not a job. Why? People have had it with their jobs. They want something creative and worthwhile. You need to create visuals so potential hires can see themselves working alongside you. If you're selling a product or service, you have to tell its story, right? You want to position your role the same way. Share what a “day in the life” looks like. Paint a picture so they can see themselves in that role long-term. It helps decrease turnover. You want to be able to confidently select the people that will join your team that are in it for the long haul. Shelli notes that you must be transparent about compensation and benefits. Many people who had really incredible salaries get to a point where it isn't about the money anymore. They want to feel like what they're doing is worthwhile. But you need to put the salary out there in black and white. Be professional and say: here's the role, the title, what the role looks like, the anchor skills, and the compensation. If it aligns with their career goals, they'll want to meet with you. If someone isn't okay with that number, don't waste each other's time. How can new designers create a compelling job description when they don't have a solid team culture to brag about? Listen to hear Shelli's thoughts. How do you retain employees for the long haul? Shelli jokes that you have to remind your team just how good they have it! She notes that you can read testimonials to your team. Share the goals that you are crushing. It's about creating storylines where everyone understands their role and how it rolls up into the mission of the business. Don't be afraid in one-on-one conversations and quarterly reviews to give people shoutouts and remind them what they bring to the business. Make sure it isn't just the “rock stars” who are getting the spotlight. Every rockstar has a team supporting them. Acknowledge everyone on the team and remind them that the work they do is worthwhile. Great leaders know how to intrinsically motivate their team with real data. It's more than “way to go” and “good job.” Your team wants professional feedback that assures them that you notice how hard they work day in and day out. What role does a career page on your website play in hiring? How do you leverage LinkedIn, Indeed, and networking to stack your interior design team? When it comes to scaling a business, there are both mindset and procedural changes that need to be made to take entrepreneurs out of the day-to-day work and into the CEO role overlooking the business as a whole. This week's episode 54 of Female Founders Breaking Boundaries is about embracing your leadership role!Have you ever felt like you were WAY too busy, stressed out, burnt out, and overwhelmed so you were advised to delegate some tasks to take things off your plate and free up some time? Except, maybe it didn't work. If getting out of the day-to-day in your business was as simple as hiring more people, then why are you still feeling overwhelmed and burned out? You are not alone! Sometimes, simply delegating tasks doesn't work and instead shifts your workload from “doing” to “managing.”I invite you to use the exercise that our own C-Suite clients use to take the first step in turning your team into a well-oiled, self-managed machine- and get you out of the delegation catch 22. Download the exercise here to get started! In this episode of Female Founders Breaking Boundaries, my guest Shellii Warren is sharing the importance of having a solid, foundational strategic plan that outlines the trajectory of the business. Having this plan will allow entrepreneurs to hire proactively, not reactively, and leave the day-to-day operations to their team so that they can better step into their leadership position. Some of the things Shelli and I cover in this episode are:Sherri's journey retiring from Corporate America and moving into her encore career with BizChix. The 2 types of people you need to hire when you're ready to scale your business. Practices to maintain a healthy and productive team.Learning to have tough conversations and admit to your mistakes early on for the benefit of both you and your team. The difference between coaching and criticizing.Delegating the day-to-day operations of your business frees up time to focus on the big picture of your business while avoiding burnout. Why we are dropping the terms “boss” and “employee” for words that bring more cohesion to the team environment. Delegating to your team is a way to create opportunities for others to take ownership of tasks, leave their stamp on the business and spend every day playing to their strengths so that you can play to yours. Thanks for listening! Many business owners struggle with their financials, especially early on in their businesses when they can lack a basic understanding of financials and can not have the budget to hire quality accounting support. As accountants, listeners to this podcast understand that financials are incredibly important, but what they may have limited insight into is which numbers business owners really need and which they don't and how those numbers fit in context. Here today to talk with me about this perspective from the business owner side is my guest Shelli Warren. Shelli is the team and leadership coach for BizChix, Inc. and the host of the Stacking Your Team podcast, where she provides insight and practical guidance on leadership, team building, and hiring practices. Shelli has more than 25 years of experience leading technical teams to deliver multimillion-dollar projects for billion-dollar brands at Proctor and Gamble. And now Shelli puts her expertise to work helping women entrepreneurs grow and scale their businesses. Highlights: — ”Women business owners are looking for a guide who will help them to manage their money and to make qualified decisions.” — ”Women business owners are looking for someone who can ask the hard questions, and push them to be more in the mindset of forecasting for the future versus reacting.” — ”The team that got you here may not be the team that gets you there.” — ”As you evolve and the business evolves, so does the team, and then so do the requirements that you need in order to always stay out front.” — ”Women business owners are very willing to pay for reports that are meaningful to them and are designed to help them understand things easier. ” ***Want one piece of business strategy delivered daily to your inbox?*** Subscribe here: https://www.shethinksbigcoaching.com/subscribe-main-list Connect with Shelli and Natalie (BizChix): Website: Biz Chix https://bizchix.com/category/podcast/bizchix/ Stacking Your Team podcast https://bizchix.com/category/podcast/team/ Instagram and LinkedIn: Shelli on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/stackingyourteampodcast/ Shelli on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/shelliwarren2/ Natalie on Instagram: https://instagram.com/bizchixpodcast/ Natalie on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/natalieeckdahl/

#133 Lessons learnt from letting people go In this solo episode, I am going to be talking with you and sharing with you, my experience and lessons learned of letting people go from the business. The reason why I'm sharing this with you is that in the six years to date that I've been in business, I have let people go due to redundancy and in preparing for these really difficult conversations, I was scouring the internet to try to find how to make somebody redundant and what to do when you need to let someone go and there are millions of articles, but the majority are written from a place of somebody teaching you the textbook way of how to do it. But what I was looking for was to hear of a business owner that had done it themselves, and I hope this podcast helps you should you find yourself in this situation. Topics to listen out for; What is best for the business? What does this business need to grow? What people do we need on the team? What financially makes sense? What is preventing me from taking the next step? Did you know that when you justify your reason for a rate increase, it can leave you open to negotiation? Listen, as Nikki shares three critical times in a sales conversation; you absolutely do not want to justify your reason and much more on this episode of the Sales Maven Show. "If you find yourself telling a story around your pricing, you are likely justifying your price." Don't open yourself up for negotiations. You don't need a story when you are increasing your prices. You don't want to put yourself on your back foot in the sales conversation. Do you feel the need to blame others when something has gone wrong or fallen through the cracks? Don't! Nikki says it is a huge rapport breaker and will diminish any credibility and authority you might have. When you make a mistake, you acknowledge it, apologize and ask for forgiveness, you don't need any other justification. "Because you have a lot of skills at what you can do, it doesn't mean you should do it, and it doesn't mean you want to do it." Nikki discusses that when your business grows, you will inevitably decline business, don't justify your reasons for declining to work with someone. Nikki's blend of teaching, sharing her knowledge, and telling stories makes this podcast easy to listen to. As we've come to expect from Nikki, she shares things that, as business owners, we've probably all had these issues but didn't realize there was another way to handle them. Thank you, Nikki, for telling us like it is. In This Episode: [00:43] Welcome to the show! [01:30] Nikki shares two five-star reviews from listeners Sonoma Kate and Shelli Warren. [03:04] Nikki feels that justifying in the sales process puts you on your back foot and diminishes your credibility. [03:22] There are three critical times in a sales conversation that you absolutely do not want to justify. [03:54] Price increases are an area where you don't want to justify your reason. [05:04] Nikki gives an example of a justification that she sees. [07:09] When things have gone wrong is another time you don't want to justify all the ways it's your fault. [08:48] Nikki shares a story around justifying yourself when things go wrong. [10:30] Nikki speaks about moving from Washington to Idaho last week and hiring packers and movers. [13:30] Nikki talks about what happened when trying to get her stuff delivered. [16:37] Nikki shares what happened when she asked for an apology from the company's representative. [18:29] Nikkis speaks about her niece losing her retainer after wrapping it in a napkin, even though she knew better. [22:44] The third time you don't want to justify is when you are declining business. [24:30] Nikki discusses what came up with one of her clients and how she instructed her to respond without a story. [25:52] Nikki shares a language suggestion around declining working with someone. Does your workspace motivate and inspire you? Or, does the thought of it make you want to take the day off? Your workspace is more than just an office. It’s a creative and innovative hub where great ideas flourish and your team comes together to work. But, is it really possible to create a workspace that sparks genuine excitement? And if so, how can you create the perfect workspace for your business? Monica Sharman has practiced Commercial Interior Design for 28 years and certainly knows a thing or two about designing workspaces that inspires creativity and productivity. Her experience derives from a combination of working for Contract Furniture dealerships, architects and briefly as Professor of Interior Design at her local Community College. 11 years ago, Monica created IN Design Associates Inc., a commercial design practice in London, Ontario, that creates custom workplace interiors. However, in recent years, Monica noticed an increased demand for more affordable design solutions to support start-ups and rapidly scaling businesses with shorter-term leases. So, she launched a second business, “the BIZ Designer,” which offers affordable e-design services and movable assets that grow alongside her clients. On this episode of the Stacking Your Team podcast, Shelli Warren and Monica Sharman discuss the latest interior design trends and what the most efficient workplaces look like. Are your fears holding you back from hiring a new team member? Are you nervous about having to lead because you’re not good with confrontation? You know you need to hire but you’re resisting because you’re afraid it won’t work out. You might be feeling this way because you’ve been burned before, or because you don’t believe you’ll ever find your ‘unicorn.’ It’s also a lot of responsibility to take on. After all, you become the reason a person can provide for their family. What happens if there’s not enough work for them? Or is there a chance that once you’ve spent all that time training them, they’ll quit and steal all your processes? These fears are real, but you are not alone. Most business owners have four main fears about hiring and leading people. The fear of hiring, the fear of leadership, the fear of responsibility and the fear of failure. Understanding the reasoning behind these fears can give you the confidence needed to find your next best hire, not your best fire! On this episode of the Stacking Your Team podcast, Shelli Warren is serving up some tough love to help you overcome your resistance to hire. Once you know what to do to feel more confident your fears will ease up and you’ll have more time to focus on your tasks as a CEO. Creating a positive and productive team culture where everyone works well together to achieve business goals is every CEO’s dream. But, what about all of the virtual teams out there? How can you even begin to build the culture that you want within a virtual team? This is the task set out before Deb Howard Greenleaf, who lives in northwestern Pennsylvania and is the mother of two active swimmers, ages 14 and 18. She runs Greenleaf Accounting Services, providing virtual bookkeeping services to consultants, coaches and other service-based businesses from NYC to LA, taking care of the books so they can grow their firms. When she’s not balancing books or attending her kids’ swim meets, Deb volunteers for local animal shelters and beats back the wilderness in her three-acre yard and gardens. Although she’s incredibly proud of her team, Deb has realized that the team culture they have isn’t what she had in mind. They’re still coming to her with typical “water cooler” questions and lack the relationship with each other to discuss and solve matters without Deb’s interjection. So, how can you build the perfect team culture when your team doesn’t work in the same place or even at the same time? This is a tricky one, but Shelli Warren has lots of tips and advice to share with Deb about getting creative and intentional about creating a drumbeat within her team that shifts the narrative and changes how team members interact with each other. Often, when it comes to the legal aspects of our business, it can seem a little bit scary. But when we’re stacking our team, legal aspects simply cannot be ignored or put aside for another day! For any small business the legal foundation needs to be there so that you can scale with ease. On this episode of the podcast, Shelli Warren talks to Danielle Liss (second time returner on the podcast!) about the basic contracts that you need in place to grow your business. Danielle is a lawyer focused on helping online business owners succeed. Her goal is to help to legally protect businesses so that owners can concentrate on their passions - whether they are a coach/consultant, an entrepreneur, an influencer, or a small business. Danielle's mantra is don't wait until you need a lawyer for a lawsuit; find someone you trust to help ensure your business is protected from the start, as you grow, and as you scale. Join Shelli and Danielle on this podcast episode and listen to Danielle take the ‘scary’ out of legal. When you think of an employee manual, you probably think of a rigorous handbook that weighs a ton. But, employee manuals have come a long way since then and can prove to be incredibly useful in our businesses. We often hear of CEO’s in the entrepreneurial world who are reluctant or even fearful of dealing with people issues. Rather than overcoming those fears, they keep them bottled up and stay in the chaotic mode of overwhelm far longer than they should. Little do they know that a lot of their problems can be solved with help from an employee manual that includes a few key HR policies. An employee manual can provide you with the confidence to answer your team’s questions while also empowering your team to discover their own answers inside its pages. On this episode of the podcast, Shelli Warren talks to Niki Ramirez about why an employee manual is one of your most powerful tools as a CEO. Niki is the Founder and Principal Consultant at HRAnswers.org, a firm dedicated to providing progressive, practical human resources and guidance that leaves an impact on small business success. Central to the work that Niki engages in is her philosophy that everything that is accomplished is through great employees; great employees led by confident, caring leaders. Over the past 20+ years, she has had the privilege of working with small and large businesses, in the public education and non-profit sectors, as well as in Native American tribal government and business enterprises. Niki has a strong desire to educate and empower entrepreneurs, small business leaders, and their employees to work in partnership to design and implement meaningful programs that drive the success of their organizations. Join Shelli and Niki on this podcast episode to uncover the basics as to why you need an employee manual! What can you do to improve and grow as a leader? You've hired your team, and trained them, now what? Shelli Warren joins Natalie to share an incredible tool that will help you, the CEO, lead your team better, and provide clarity to you and your team members. Role. Responsibilities. Results. Requirements. Renewal date. These are the 5 Rs that make up this document. Together, they will help you set your expectations out clearly, and walk people through feedback. Shelli and Natalie discuss the 5 Rs, including why communicating results to the team member is important, the role of metrics in assessing results, and the idea that this is a living document that should be revisited regularly. A whole lot of small business success starts with personal development. In recent episodes of the Businessese Influencer Marketing Podcast, we've talked about fixing your entrepreneurial mindset, joining a mastermind group, and improving productivity to pave the way towards exponential growth within your business. The next logical (and exciting!) step was to discuss hiring and growing your team so you can handle all that growth, and pay attention on the big picture next steps that can catapult your business to the next level. Once you've pinpointed the people who are the perfect fit for your team, however, there are some essential, cut and dry, don't-skip, can't-be-said-enough actions you need to take to protect you and your business. If you're currently working with independent contractors, thinking about hiring, or even working as an independent contractor yourself, you'll want to fire this podcast episode up and learn: the difference between an employee and contractor what the IRS considers when determining if someone is an employee or contractor examples of independent contractors that you will encounter as an online business owner why you always need an independent contractor agreement regardless of what the contractor is doing and some of the most important terms in this kind of contract. You've started your own business, and it's doing well. Better than well, actually! You have more work to do than you have hours in the day. It's a good problem to have. Only, you don't spend as much time you like pitching new opportunities to grow your business. Or maybe you've actually had to turn down some exciting, lucrative offers because you simply already have too much on your plate. Maybe you're worried about burning out, because you're spending all your time dealing with the minutiae of your business and not the strategy of your business. Sounds like it's time to grow your team and hire the help you need, so that you can turn your attention to the tasks that will bring in more revenue and take your business to the next level! It's a thrilling turning point in your entrepreneurial career, but it can also be pretty scary to take that leap and relinquish the control you've had over all the aspects of your business up until this point. The tasks that are really bringing in those high profits, that's where you need to be. Not dealing in the day to day, hundred dollar tasks. -Shelli Warren Allow us to introduce you to Shelli Warren. Shelli recently left the corporate world after more than 25 years of people development experience with Procter & Gamble Inc., leading virtual teams on a global scale and developing a reputation for knowing how to stack a team well. In this action-packed episode of the Businessese Influencer Marketing Podcast, Shelli shares her extensive expertise in the process of successfully hiring and growing your team. Jodi Flynn, Women's Leadership Coach and founder of “Women Taking the Lead," talks about the important role that local connections play in the growth of your business and the expansion of your influencer network. Jodi's Journey Jodi had a successful career in mutual fund operations, becoming the Assistant VP of Corporate Quality. However, as time went by, she started to ask herself, "Is this it?" She then became fascinated by coaching, and decided to take the leap into entrepreneurship. Gradually, she found her niche: Type A women, and hasn't looked back since. Now, she leads a thriving community of women leaders, and hosts her popular podcast, "Women Taking the Lead." Your influencer marketing story From your own backyard to the rest of the world Jodi has built a solid network of connections in four main ways: Joining her local BNI chapter. BNI helped her hone her speaking skills and better articulate what she does in her business. Thanks to that first group of supportive connections, she met many more people in the local area. Attending business-after-hours meetings and other local networking events where she knew ideal clients might be. Signing up for targeted conferences in the local area and other locations across the country, too. Hosting her podcast, with listeners from all over the world. I personally met Jodi through her podcast, which has allowed her to become an influencer herself. The best way to get started Jodi says that local networking is the most powerful way to get started. "Nothing trumps a face-to-face meeting," she says. "That's how we get to know each other (...) It's about the energy exchange." The best way to expand To connect with influencers outside her local area, Jodi has leveraged her own platform (podcast). Influencers want to spread their message, and if you have a podcast, you can deliver value to them through the added exposure on your own platform. A "Spartan" connection Jodi wanted to connect with Joe De Sena, author of "Spartan Up!: A Take-No-Prisoners Guide to Overcoming Obstacles and Achieving Peak Performance in Life." She saw him during a Spartan race, and immediately approached him with a proposal to be on her show. Joe said, "I'd love to!" And a new influencer connection was made. "If I didn't have a podcast, that wouldn't have happened," Jodi relates. How to approach podcasters To successfully connect with Jodi as an influencer, writing a podcast pitch that she can relate to is a must. "If someone has a powerful story that resonates with my audience, I'll want to interview them," she says. Also, potential guests must show that they clearly understand Jodi's audience's struggles. It's about clearly conveying that you have value to offer. Authenticity as the foundation for long-lasting connections Authenticity is a must to connect with any influencer. Shelli Warren, one of Jodi's listeners, would share every episode of Jodi's podcast on social media. She would add an insightful comment and tag Jodi. Shelli even emailed Jodi regularly to tell her about the impact that Jodi's podcast was having in her business. Eventually, Jodi felt compelled to reach out to Shelli to learn more about her. Shelli eventually ended up as a guest on Jodi's podcast and became one of Jodi's closest connections. As Jodi says, you have to genuinely admire and respect somebody to be able to connect with them. Always give first: The equation is "give, give, give, and then ask." Worst influencer marketing moment "Not all influencers are the right people for you," Jodi says. She once connected with a top influencer in leadership, who didn't share her values and style. Jodi sensed it wasn't the right fit from the start, but because that influencer had a very large audience, decided to continue nurturing the relationship. However, the disconnect between their values continued to surface, and the relationship eventually fizzled. One thing you're most excited about Jodi is launching her new website, with a wide variety of resources for women in leadership. "It's a new evolution of my business," she says. Resources mentioned Podcast: Women Taking the Lead Book: "Spartan Up!: A Take-No-Prisoners Guide to Overcoming Obstacles and Achieving Peak Performance in Life." Jodi’s motto “Give, give, give, and then ask.” More About Jodi Flynn Jodi Flynn is the Founder of Women Taking the Lead, a podcast and community of ambitious entrepreneurial women who want to go BIG. She works with Type-A women who are already successful but have not yet achieved the level of success they want to achieve. Jodi helps her clients to see how extraordinary they are and then set priorities, get organized, in action so they can achieve their biggest goals with ease. “I loved it until I didn’t anymore” is the way Shelli described her feelings about her corporate career with Proctor and Gamble. By all measurements it had been a very successful experience, with Shelli rising to the top with her leadership, project management, event planning and teaching skills. But it was time for a change. Her own Next Chapter was looming and so she began to lay the foundation for her new direction 2 years before she actually took early retirement at 52.

Shelli Warren of SheConnex spent 25 years as an executive leader and trainer at a Fortune 500 company and is now a success coach helping other women launch their own encore careers as entrepreneurs. I met Shelli through the mastermind we’re currently in together and have been so impressed with her wisdom and her fierce advocacy for women. Shelli is particularly good at creating local events to connect women with each other. In this episode, Shelli and I strategize ways she can leverage podcasts as well as local speaking engagements and events to build her following and get more clients. We talk about: Shelli’s career and why she decided to leave and start her own business The differences Shelli has seen between men and women getting promoted How Shelli helps her clients see the skills they have as transferable and marketable Shelli’s focus on local clients and speaking engagements Why Shelli should branch out from speaking to all women’s groups to co-ed groups too Shelli’s two different client avatars but the common need they share (and how that impacts her presentation content) What to hand out at speaking engagements (not your business card!) Hello everyone and welcome to Women Taking the Lead. It has been a while since the last bonus episode and there is a good reason for that. There have been some changes going on behind the scenes here that I had thought about out loud in my last bonus episode but I am now ready to roll them out. This will be the last “Bonus” episode. Will this be last time it’s just me talking directly to you on the podcast? Absolutely not. In fact, you’re going to be hearing a lot more of me going forward. Starting this coming Monday, which at the time of the release of this episode will be February 20th, 2017, I will be releasing one interview per week and one episode of 100% Jodi per week. In fact, 100% Jodi is what I am going to be calling these episodes. I got this idea for this title from one of The Accomplished Community members, Shelli Warren of SheConnex, so thank you Shelli!! I laughed when she proposed the idea and thought, “brilliant!” So, each Monday I will be featuring a new amazing women who is taking the lead in her life and sharing her with you and on Thursdays I’ll be releasing an episode of 100% Jodi. But let me be clear, I want these 100% Jodi episodes to be inspired by your questions, your ideas, and the solutions to your challenges. The more you send me the more valuable these episodes are going to be for all of us. Changing the format was in response to the feedback I’ve gotten from all of you. I kept hearing that you wanted more bonus episodes, more talk time from me during the interviews and questions on how to get more from Jodi. I love you all for that and I am incredibly humbled. I want to serve and be a part of your journeys because it is one of my guiding principles that we are all better together. Here are some ways you can get more from me and be a more intimate part of me and my world: (1) Listen to the episodes and even go back and listen to them again. Just like the movies we watch more than once we realize we missed something the first time around. Keep the inspiration going. If you like what you’re hearing subscribe in iTunes and leave me a rating and review so other women (and men) just like you can find this podcast. (2) Want to keep the inspiration going? Share this podcast with your friends. Not only will you get inspired by listening to the episodes, your friends will bring up what they got out of listening in the conversations you have with them creating a shared experience – and this helps to integrate or anchor what you took away into your consciousness which will then show up in your actions. Here’s where you can find the podcast: iTunes, Stitcher Radio, Google Play Music or iHeart Radio and never miss out on inspiration and community! (3) Join the Women Taking the Lead private Facebook group. At this point we’ve got nearly 350 women who are up to things in their life asking questions, sharing resources, introducing themselves & their work, and finding collaborators to partner with. I’m posting questions and inspirational posts to keep you in the conversation and motivate you throughout the week. I’ve got the link in the blog post that accompanies this episode for you: https://www.facebook.com/groups/womentl/ (4) Buy my book, Accomplished: How to Go from Dreaming to Doing. The feedback I’ve gotten from the community is Accomplished is well written, clear and concise, inspirational, motivational and the free resources that come with the book have been invaluable in helping you to achieve your goals. You guys, this is my signature coaching system in a book and you are getting it for less than $15. If you have a goal that you are struggling to get off the ground or you can’t seem to reach this is the book for you. You can find out more at womentakingthelead.com/accomplished or go directly to Amazon. If you put Jodi Flynn Accomplished in the search bar you’ll find it quickly. (5) Join The Accomplished Community. This is the community I created for those of you who are ready to go BIG and want to do it with support and accountability from me and others just like you who are also stretching themselves to be the person they know they are meant to be – the best version of themselves. I don’t know about you but this was what I was craving early in my career and in my business. I have definitely been successful but I know I would have achieved that success feeling more confident and less stressed out if I had formed a committed community of women just like me to be a part of. Here’s a big announcement and let me give you some background. Each month in The Accomplished Community I bring on a subject matter expert to do a video call with community – not a webinar where we are being talked at and Q&A happens via chat. This is a webcast where everyone on the call has an opportunity to interact with the expert. We’ve had 2 so far: CS Wurzberger, The Green Up Girl, presented on how to have a wildly profitable business and Meredith Bell of Performance Support Systems presented on how to connect with influencers on LinkedIn. Next up we’ve got John Lee Dumas of Entrepreneur on Fire coming to talk to us about Self-Mastery. If you don’t know John’s story let me give you a brief version to catch you up. After years of regularly changing careers looking for that perfect fit John decided to go after a dream and launched the Entrepreneur on Fire podcast. He didn’t know when he started how he was going to make money and for the first 6-8 months he had expenses and no income. Then it started to trickle, and trickle more and by the time he was 18 months in he was earning 6 figures a month from the multiple streams of income he created for his business. There’s a lot that went into how he did it but was always stood out to me about John is his unconquerable spirit. He doesn’t let much get him down and it’s nearly impossible to stop him and it’s self-mastery that is his secret sauce. Coming soon he will be doing an intimate presentation and Q&A for The Accomplished Community so if you want to be a part of it go to womentakingthelead.com/community and get yourself in there. (6) Lastly, if you want to partner directly with me let’s talk about private coaching – either stand alone or included with The Accomplished Community. I love working one-to-one with you guys and witnessing the transformation that occurs while we are working together. Experiencing your ah-ha moments and helping you put them into action so you are achieving success more quickly than you first imagined – that gratifies my soul and energizes me to keep going. If you’ve been on the fence about working with me and not sure if this is the right time for you’ll let’s just have a quick chat about it. I am not a high pressure person. It’s either the right time for you or it’s not – and we’ll figure that out together within 20-30 minutes of chatting. The calendar link is too long and confusing to read so just head over to the blog post, click on the link and let’s get a chat scheduled on the calendar! https://calendly.com/jodimflynn/30-minute Thank you so much for being a woman taking the lead, for joining with me and others just like yourself to hit our goals and make stuff happen. It is an honor and a joy for me to be a part of your journey and I’m looking forward to living the future that we create. Here's To Our Success! The Strong Women’s Club Women's Success Stories in Business and in Life
Hi, everybody. I'm Edie Berg and this is a quick, short, and practical podcast with your brags plus tips and tools to help you be inspired, know that you're not alone and to set and reach your goals, however big or small they may be. Today's brag is from a wonderful woman. Her name is Shelli Warren and we are in our Mastermind together. Here's Shelli's brag. Hi, Edie. It's Shelli Warren and I'm checking in all the way from Canada. I love connecting with you in our Mastermind group with Natalie and the other girls. I'm learning so much from you guys and I love listening to your podcast. I find the caliber of guests that you feature to be simply outstanding. Thank you for the invite to share a brag and so here's mine. As you know, one of the ways that I connect with my membership is I host a monthly live cocktail hour where I put a fabulous woman on the hot seat and I do a live interview with her and we talk about her journey to success. So the premise is to expand our reach, make new connections and go at a much deeper level in terms of connecting with one another. A group of women who follow me from a city east of me reached out and asked me to come and host a series in their city so I did and it was a great turnout. It was a really fun night, it was a really cool location and I'm just more and more thrilled to be able to connect with my members in person. So I'm pumped about that and to see where else it's going to go. Thanks so much! Have a fabulous week, keep up the good work in your podcast. I love it! Thanks, Shelli for taking the time to record your brag. As you can hear, Shelli and I are friends through our wonderful Mastermind group. Shelli actually holds live events which she calls "Feminars" and you can find more about her on her website which is called sheconnex.com. She spells "connects" with an "x", so that's sheconnex.com. As you can hear from Shelli's brag, she's been able to expand her reach, helping women outside of her immediate area so check out what Shelli has to offer on her website. Maybe you'll also be interested in working with her. Today's tip is directly related to this week's podcast interview with Bea Johnson. As you may have heard on the show, Bea recommends reusing almost everything including clothes which is something that I've been doing for a long time. Here in Israel, we don't really have thrift shops but there is a second-hand consignment store next to my house in Cfar Shmeriyahu where I live, and I shop there for clothes and shoes for myself and also for my daughter, sometimes. It's a little store, you need to kind of sift through everything that's there and I know that if I'm going to shop at her store, I'm going to be there for an hour, at least, more like an hour and a half. That kind of keeps me away for a long time because generally, I don't have time to spend shopping like that but every so often I do, especially if I know that I have an event coming up. For example, New Year's Eve is coming up around the corner so I want to buy something kind of shiny and sparkly to wear which is not exactly how I usually dress but New Year's Eve is almost like a costume, so I like to wear things with sequins, really play it up a little bit, look a little Las Vegas-y. I even have a fake fur coat that I like to wear so it's time for me to go to the second-hand store. If I don't buy something for New Year's Eve, I don't find anything that I like, then it's also a win because I didn't spend any money. This is a consignment shop so I also drop clothes off there. I take everything that we don't need anymore and I just drop it off so the owner donates probably 95% of what I bring and 5% she'll sell and I'll get 50% of the proceeds of what she sold. I take that money, I never take cash back, I always put that back onto my account and sometimes I can go shopping there and buy one or two things and get them for free, it's like magic. It's a wonderful win-win situation, win-win-win because she also donates all the stuff that I bring in so that works out super well. Around the Holiday time, what's really good about these kinds of things is that you can also buy gifts there. I don't buy second-hand clothes as a gift, usually but I do buy small things of silver. Usually, she has in the store window, maybe a silver serving spoon or something that holds butter that's made out of silver or a sugar dish. Little tongs I bought once, they're gorgeous, for sugar cubes. Beautiful little gifts, unique items, obviously not new so I tell the person I give it to, I say, "Look, I got it at the second-hand store, at the consignment shop." I'm not embarrassed to say it, I'm actually kind of proud of it. So look around in your area for a consignment store and you can buy really unique gifts. I bought once a crystal bottle for liqueur for a friend who likes to make their own cherry liqueur. It was the perfect gift, nothing I could have bought in any store. So have a look at that, you'll save money, you'll get kudos for being creative and you'll be saving the environment as Bea Johnson says. Check out your consignment stores in your area. That's my tip for the week. It will save you money and it's kind of fun to do too, you might get a deal that you hadn't expected. So go have an awesome week, everybody and go be strong!

When she’s not growing her business and making new connexions, she co-chairs the Leadercast Brockville Leadership Conference. This event that is linked to the Atlanta, Georgia hub site annual conference, which is gearing up to launch "Success For Teens”, a youth leadership program designed by the team at Success Magazine for the up and coming leaders in her hometown. Playing Small Moment Shelli was a proven leader of technical teams. When she felt it was time for her to move up and into a different role, she enlisted the help of a leader who turned out not having the clout she thought he had. It took a couple of years before she decided to bypass him and get the word out on her own. The Wake Up Call One day it dawned on Shelli that she was starting to resent having to go to work. She was finding more and more fulfillment in her community and discovering joy outside of her career. She loved her job until she didn’t. Style of Leadership Shelli has the unique ability to stack a team. She attracted the best candidates because of her communication strategies and her willingness to shine a spotlight on those deserving of the attention. Current Business Challenge Shelli is learning things happen on divine time and not on Shelli time. She is learning to release the significance on the outcome and appreciating that things will happen when they are supposed to happen. Shelli is also finding it challenging to value her ability and formulate a price for her services. What Are You Excited About? Shelli is excited about recording her live sessions and launching her encouragement cards. Her cards are an easy, quick delightful way to let someone know people are noticing what “she” is accomplishing. Your Support System Shelli’s support system includes an artist, a web developer and the women of her Sheconnex community. Leadership Practice She starts every day with a podcast for motivation and keeps key people in her Fab 5.
