As a 5th year, even Jassen Yep didn't think winning an NCAA Swimming title was possible until he touched the wall in the 200 breast. After touching, Jassen Yep let out raw emotion and excitement, resulting in a legendary swimming celly. Although it seems like Yep was an overnight success, there was a lot of hard work behind this win. Yep was an accomplished high school swimmer in California, representing Archbishop Mitty and swimming at PEAK with elite club coach Abi Liu. In high school, he went a 1:57 in the 200 breast to earn a small scholarship at Indiana. At Indiana, Jassen put in work and through various ups and downs, he dropped 9 seconds in the 200 breast to go a 1:48 200 breaststroke, becoming the third fastest performer in history. He is also the best dressed Social Kick guest of all time, rocking a tuxedo on the show and having Olympian Matt King serve him a chilled beverage. Entering the 2025 NCAA Swimming championships, Jassen Yep was convinced this would be his final meet. Lucky for us, he surprised himself, and we'll get to watch him continue his career in the long pool. Enjoy and don't forget to subscribe for weekly podcasts and daily shorts!

2nd Annual Men's NCAA Championship Recap Show featuring Gabriel Jett (Cal), Brendan Burns (Indiana), and Hubert Kós (Arizona State). The dust settled after Cal's successful title defense in the storied Minnesota pool, and some of the highest point scorers in the NCAA sat down for a cross-team chat about the meet and about college swimming. Gabriel Jett also scored 46 individual points, a byproduct of making 3 A-finals and finishing 2nd, 3rd, and 6th as a Sophomore for the defending champion Golden Bears. Hubert (Hubi) Kós arrived at Arizona State mid-year as quite a weapon. The 19 year old Freshman walked on deck as the defending European champ in the 200IM and he backed up his reputation with 37 points at his first NCAA Championship meet and was one of many Sun Devils that delivered BIG for 2nd place ASU, the highest finish in school history!

Good Monday ladies and gentleman, this is Garrison Hardie with your CrossPolitic Daily News Brief for Monday, July 18th, 2022. I hope you all had a fantastic weekend with you and yours’, so let’s start this week off right. Here’s what you may have missed over the weekend: https://www.foxnews.com/sports/lia-thomas-nominated-university-pennsylvania-ncaa-woman-year-award Lia Thomas nominated by University of Pennsylvania for NCAA 'Woman of the Year' award The University of Pennsylvania nominated swimmer Lia Thomas for the NCAA "Woman of the Year" award. According to an announcement from the NCAA, the University of Pennsylvania nominated the transgender athlete for the award, which recognizes female student-athletes. "Established in 1991, the award recognizes female student-athletes who have exhausted their eligibility and distinguished themselves in their community, in athletics and in academics throughout their college careers," the NCAA nomination page reads. NCAA member schools "are encouraged to celebrate their top graduating female student-athletes by nominating them for the NCAA Woman of the Year Award," the announcement reads. After member schools make their nominations, their conference can then select up to two nominees. Thomas, a former swimmer at the University of Pennsylvania, won the 500-yard freestyle event at the 2022 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships Thursday. Her participation in college women's swimming has brought on a national debate, with some saying that she has an unfair advantage over other athletes. Riley Gaines, a swimmer at the University of Kentucky who tied with Lia Thomas for fifth place at the NCAA swimming championships, said that a majority of females aren't okay with the trajectory of female sports. "The majority of us female athletes, or females in general, really, are not okay with this, and they're not okay with the trajectory of this and how this is going and how it could end up in a few years," Gaines said on the "Unmuted with Marsha" podcast with Sen. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn. She was referring to the NCAA's refusal to change the rules in order to protect competitiveness in female sports. The University of Pennsylvania also nominated Iuliia Bryzgalova for the award, who plays tennis at the school. Hey, speaking of playing dress-up, https://www.foxnews.com/politics/judge-biden-admin-transgender-school-bathroom-athletes Judge blocks Biden admin's transgender school bathroom rule for athletes A federal judge has blocked a directive from President Joe Biden’s administration that allowed transgender workers and students to use school restrooms matching their gender identities. It also allowed transgender athletes to join sports teams corresponding with their chosen genders. The directive was blocked by Judge Charles Atchley Jr. of the Eastern District of Tennessee, a Trump appointee, after a coalition of 20 Republican attorneys general sued last year, Reuters reported. The plaintiffs argued the federal directive clashed with state laws and prevented states from enforcing their own laws that banned transgender school bathroom use. Judge Atchley agreed, saying in his opinion the states "cannot continue regulating pursuant to their state laws while simultaneously complying with Defendants' guidance," Reuters reported. The states also argued the Biden administration's Justice Department, the Department of Education and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission — the defendants in the case — improperly justified the bathroom directive through the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in Bostock v. Clayton County. In the case, Clayton County fired county employee Gerald Bostock for "unbecoming" behavior after he participated in a gay recreational softball league. The Supreme Court ruled in 2020, that workplace sex discrimination in Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 should extend to sexual orientation and gender identity. The high court said in its decision they were not deciding whether "sex-segregated bathrooms, locker rooms, and dress codes' violate Title VII." The department suggested the court’s decision should be applied to sex-segregated bathrooms — but Judge Atchley disagreed. The Supreme Court in Bostock "explicitly refused to decide whether 'sex-segregated bathrooms, locker rooms, and dress codes' violate Title VII," the judge said in his opinion, Reuters reported. Oklahoma Attorney General John O'Connor, who was among the plaintiffs, called the decision "a major victory for women's sports and for the privacy and safety of girls and women in their school bathrooms and locker rooms," per the report. It’s the largest number recorded in a fiscal year in U.S. history. They total 2,002,604 from over 150 countries. In June, a record 207,416 people were apprehended, the highest number recorded in June in the history of the Department of Homeland Security. The total includes those apprehended and encountered by U.S. Border Patrol and Office of Field Operations staff. They exclude gotaways first reported by The Center Square, which includes at least another 50,009 people. The total for June, including gotaways, was 257,425, a record high for the month. “Gotaways” is the official term used by Border Patrol to describe foreign nationals who enter the U.S. illegally and don’t surrender at ports of entry but intentionally seek to evade capture from law enforcement. They are currently in the U.S. and no one in law enforcement knows who or where they are. The last time encounters were nearly this high was the last summer of the presidency of Bill Clinton. In June 2000, 117,469 people were encountered/apprehended at the southern border, excluding gotaways. In May, CBP reported the highest monthly total of apprehensions at the southern border in recorded U.S. history of 239,416, excluding another minimum 70,793 recorded gotaways. In April, CBP reported 235,478 total encounters/apprehensions; in March, 222,239; in February, 165,902; in January, 154,816. The totals all exclude gotaway data. Despite a record number of people coming to the southern border, CBP says it “continues to enforce U.S. immigration law and apply consequences to those without a legal basis to remain in the U.S. “Current restrictions at the U.S. border have not changed; single adults and families encountered at the southwest border will continue to be expelled, where appropriate, under CDC’s Title 42 Order. Those who are not expelled will be processed under the long-standing Title 8 authority and placed into removal proceedings.” But this isn’t what’s happening, Republican governors and attorneys general nationwide argue. This week, 19 AGs filed a brief with the U.S. Supreme Court in support of a lawsuit filed by Texas and Louisiana. The lawsuit was filed in response to a directive issued by DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas that drastically altered deportation policy, which the states argue contradicts federal law established by Congress and allows more people to stay in the U.S. illegally, including violent criminals. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis implemented a range of policies to combat what he describes as the “Biden border crisis,” including suing over the Biden administration’s “catch and release” and other programs. Texas and Missouri have sued the administration over several border security issues, including halting border wall construction and reimplementing an Obama-era program allowing illegal immigrants to remain in the country. Texas and Arizona also have implemented a range of border security measures costing their states’ taxpayers a combined multiple billions of dollars to thwart criminal activity stemming from the southern border. And Texas Gov. Greg Abbott says his state’s law enforcement officials have confiscated enough fentanyl to kill nearly every man, woman and child in the U.S., which is brought into Texas illegally from Mexico. GAVIN NEWSOM THREATENS ACTION AGAINST UCLA DUE TO BIG 10 MOVE Gavin Newsom continues to put himself in his favorite place to be; the news. This time he’s making headlines with regards to UCLA’s impending 2024 move out of the Pac-12 Conference to the Big 10. In a recent interview with Fox 11 in Los Angeles, Newsom explained how he heard about UCLA’s decision and his initial reactions to it. He specifically highlighted that UCLA did not give advance notice to the University of California system’s Board of Regents, saying the negotiations were “done in isolation” and without their “oversight or support.” The full quote is even more critical, with Newsom implying he was frustrated with finding out about it in the news like everyone else: Gavin Newsom says UC regents not consulted about UCLA leaving Pac-12- Play 0:20-1:42 For his part, Martin Jarmond, the UCLA Athletic Director, claimed the move was mostly about increasing “exposure” in the NIL era. By opening the school up to potentially more nationally televised games and East Coast markets, Jarmond says they can now provide an enhanced opportunity for student-athletes to find “their voice and their brand and what’s important to them.” But importantly, Newsom also signaled that UCLA might not be able to pack their bags as quickly as expected. During the interview he stated that the Regents have already been “looking into it” with regards to potential options: UCLA has been in deep financial trouble, accruing over $100 million in debt in just the past few years. The Big 10 currently offers significant revenue advantages over the Pac-12 and undoubtedly will allow UCLA to clear up its poor finances more quickly. Whether or not Newsom and the UC Board of Regents will be able to do anything to stop or slow the move remains to be seen. But it’s odd that Newsom is on one hand claiming that he’s a champion of “freedom” in California while doing his best to impede UCLA’s freedom to improve their stature and financial situation. Like many who have fled his state’s managerial incompetence, UCLA has found greener pastures with an organization based elsewhere. Newsom apparently just doesn’t like losing. Newsome is crushing California’s economy so hard, that even his woke universities are making the most of capitalism, in order to find greener pastures… As a football fan, I kind of get it. The Pac-12 has done a poor job of getting the west-coast schools exposure when it comes to televised games… especially because the east coast is already going to be asleep during a lot of the prime time competitions for the Pac-12. Do you really think someone in Eastern time is going to stay up and watch a 3 & a half hour long football game? No thanks. No thanks. Tim Loeffler was hired as UIC's head men's and women's swim coach on June 3, 2014. The 2019 Horizon League Championships saw three Flames claim individual swimming titles. Loeffler also guided four individuals and one relay team to UIC program records. In 2018, four individuals won conference championships and four more program records were broken. Additionally, five swimmers qualified for the US Open Championships in 2019, where one (Michael Tegeler - 200 back) qualified for finals. Before arriving at UIC, Loeffler spent the 2013-14 season as an assistant coach at Army where he helped the men's team claim runner-up honors in the Patriot League Championships. Prior to his time at West Point, Loeffler served four years as the assistant coach at Michigan State where he worked primarily with the middle distance and distance freestyle swimmers. Loeffler also gained valuable experience as the Spartan's lead recruiter and director of summer camps.Contact us: https://isportsrecruiting.com/consultation When considering athletics scholarships, you need to examine three primary organizations. The three primary avenues for athletics scholarships are through the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), and the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). Within these organizations, there are further divisions based on the size of the institution. All of these organizations combine education and athletics to deliver the experience of a lifetime to the committed student-athletes playing and studying under this umbrella
Episode 7 is with Medgar Harrison, the Director of Strength and Conditioning at Jackson State University. He talks about lessons learned at the universities and coaches he has learned from. Medgar Harrison joined the Jackson State staff in January of 2019 and oversees all strength and conditioning operations. Harrison comes from Alabama State where he served in a similar role. Harrison was in charge of the daily strength & conditioning regimens for the Hornets' football program. In addition to Football, Harrison worked directly with the Hornets' Baseball program, under the direction of head coach Jose Vazquez. He also oversaw the other 17 sports at Alabama State University's which consist of nearly 400 student-athletes. The Shreveport, Louisiana native has a philosophy of three basic pathways for strength & power development – max effort, dynamic effort and repetition method. Harrison's philosophy is based on the conjugate system's method, which involves the coupling of multiple exercises to ultimately enhance an athlete's strength and power. According to Harrison, it is all about fast twitch muscle fiber recruitment. Sports, winners and all champions are determined by who can apply the most force, move the fastest or cover the most ground in the shortest amounts of time. Train the part to increase the whole. The max effort is the superior method to strength and power development. The process involves moving a heavy max load as fast as possible. It places great demands on both intramuscular and intermuscular coordination, as well as stimulating the central nervous system. The dynamic effort involves lifting a sub-max or non-maximal load with the greatest speed possible, ultimately activating fast twitch muscle fibers. This method is not used for the development of maximal strength, but rather for the improved rate of force development and explosive strength. Finally, the repetition method is the best method for the development of muscle hypertrophy or growth. It is the method in which all supplemental and accessory exercises are trained. Together, these three basic pathways allow the athlete to continuously develop strength and power throughout the year. While overseeing the strength and conditioning department for all athletic programs at Bethune-Cookman University, Harrison worked directly with the Football, Baseball and the Men's and Women's golf programs assisting them to ten conference championships. Prior to his stint in Daytona Beach, Harrison spent two years at University of Tennessee in Knoxville, where he served as the Strength and Conditioning Coordinator for the Men's Swimming & Diving team. Harrison assisted the Volunteers to a 12th place national finish at the 2010 NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships, while training 13 All-Americans in the process. He also worked directly with the Volunteers' Football team, in which he assisted with the training of two first round draft picks in the 2010 draft. Harrison also accompanied the Vols to two consecutive bowl game appearances (2010 Music City Bowl and 2009 Chick-Fil-A Bowl). A 2005 graduate of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, Harrison served as an Assistant Strength & Conditioning Coach at his alma mater before heading to Tennessee. At ULL, he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology with a concentration in Exercise Science. He later earned his Master of Science degree in Human Resources with a concentration in Nutrition in 2007 from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. He is a member of the Collegiate Strength & Conditioning Coaches Association (CSCCa), National Strength & Conditioning Association (NSCA) and USA Weightlifting (USAW). Harrison is a certified through the NSCA and USA Weightlifting as a Sports Performance Coach. Harrison and his wife, Mariah Elise, have two sons, Maxxim Ethan Wayne and Morgan Evan Wayne. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/theunknownstrengthcoaches/support
Greensboro is known as "Tournament Town," but it's not just because of the NCAA and ACC. Ainsley Johnston, the Chamber's event manager, sits down with the Greensboro Sports Foundation to discuss how our city lives up to its moniker the other 363 days of the year. Thanks for joining us! This episode is sponsored by Truliant Federal Credit Union Visit Truliant here --------------------- 1:23 - Ainsley welcomes us to the podcast and introduces guests Rob Goodman, the Executive Director of the Greensboro Sports Foundation, and Marc Bush, the Vice Chairman of the Foundation. Ainsley, Rob, and Mark are discussing the idea of “Tournament Town” and how the Greensboro Sports Foundation plays a critical role in bringing these events to our community. 1:58 - The Greensboro Sports Foundation is the local organizing committee for helping to bring sporting events to Greensboro and ensuring that visitors have a great time. Once the event is in town, the Foundation is responsible for hosting, coordinating logistics, and helping to make people feel welcome and excited to come back to Greensboro. 3:50 - Ainsley asks Rob and Marc to expand on the breadth of sporting tournaments that Greensboro hosts. Greensboro earned the name of Tournament Town because it has played host to numerous ACC Basketball tournaments, the US Figure Skating Championships, ODAC Swimming Championships, ACC Women's and Men's Swimming and Diving, NCAA Basketball and Swimming Championships, and more! 6:12 - Ainsley asks for more detail on the numerous swimming and diving events held in Greensboro, as we have a fantastic aquatics center but most often hear about basketball. Marc discusses how the Greensboro Aquatics Center (GAC) has helped put Greensboro on the map for national championship events. The GAC recently was awarded the YMCA's Y National Long Course event for three years and is currently in the bid process for the NCAA Swimming and Diving Division 1 and Division 3 events. 8:10 - The discussion moves to the addition of a fourth pool at the Aquatics Center. The fourth pool has now made Greensboro Aquatics Center the largest in the nation, opening up many other event and tournament options. This expansion has also helped the Center honor its commitment to serving the community, hosting local programs even when tournaments are in town. 12:55 - Ainsley moves the conversation to basketball and what to expect in Greensboro for 2020. Rob describes hosting the ACC Women's Basketball Tournament for the 20th time during the first weekend of March, followed by the ACC Men's Basketball Tournament (Greensboro's 27th time hosting), then the next weekend will be the NCAA Division 1 Men's Basketball first and second rounds. The logistics of hosting this sporting trifecta takes the perfect, coordinated effort of talented and dedicated Coliseum staff! 17:25 - Rob talks about how the community is coming together to work on decorations and marketing around these events, and how the revamped Tournament Town logo is now focused on Greensboro, tradition, and the fans that drive the economic boom that comes with these events. 19:08 - Ainsley asks about events planned for fans during the basketball tournaments. Rob describes a kickoff lunch, speakers, a Tuesday night party open to the public, a Saturday night concert with the Indigo Girls, tailgating, food trucks, live music, festivals, live watch parties, and so much more. It's an exciting and packed schedule! 23:50 - Ainsley asks Rob and Marc to explain how local support helps Greensboro get and keep these tournaments and all the positive economic impact that comes with them. Marc explains the enormous economic impact that sporting events have on Greensboro's local economy, from restaurants and hotel rooms to selling tickets and Coliseum concessions. Rob details that local support helps Greensboro stay competitive among other cities that host tournaments by creating an experience unlike anywhere else. --------------------- Remember to subscribe for new episode notifications each week.
