Remember the Borg? Remember how absolutely terrifying they were? They kidnapped our beloved Jean-Luc and wiped out a huge chunk of Starfleet just a season or so back! But what if I told you these malevolent murder machines were just a pack of misunderstood kids? No, seriously! They may want to assimilate you and absorb everything distinctive and special about you, but that's what all the robots are doing these days, right Alexa? Meet 3 of 5, a Borg drone the Enterprise crew discover in a crash site. While Picard says ditch the bitch, Bev has other ideas and brings 3 aboard. Before you know it, she and Geordi are building bridges and tearing down fences getting to know the little guy. Soon they're calling him “Hugh” and trying to help him learn and grow. That's all nice and lovely except the Captain wants to arm Hugh with a deadly virus and send him back to the collective as a Doom's Day weapon. Picard and Guinan are bent on the complete destruction of the Borg, but will their plans be spoiled by a bad case of the Feelings? Will Picard learn to love the alien? Will Bev and Geordi let love rule? Will someone reprogram Hugh into a Roomba drone to keep the wall carpeting clean? In Joke Farming: How to Write Comedy and Other Nonsense, Elliott Kalan (U Chicago Press, 2025) explains that it's easier to write jokes when you have a dependable method for doing so. All jokes, he argues, are built from the same elements: structure, premise, voice, tone, wording, and audience—and these elements can be applied to any comedic genre, from stand-up to sitcoms to satire. Kalan analyzes examples from his own career—including jokes that he wrote (and rewrote and rewrote and rewrote . . . ) as head writer for The Daily Show with Jon Stewart—as well as material from a diverse array of comedians, writers, and filmmakers, highlighting the phrasing, rhythm, and precise details that make their work so dang funny.Drawing on his experiences in professional writers' rooms as well as episodes from everyday life, Kalan's guide to jokes will appeal to aspiring writers, their mentors, comedy fans, and anyone who has to speak at a wedding. Joke Farming points the way toward a writing process that lessens stress and agony and yields more reliable rewards: a surprising tagline, a hilarious word choice, and—most importantly—a bigger laugh from the audience, whoever they may be. We've all walked that lonely path in one form or another over the past 12 months, wondering where life is headed. The bad news? It's headed to the grave. The good news? It doesn't have to stay there. Because of the resurrection, the path to true life doesn't end at the grave. It begins there.

This week on the pod, Chris Dudley of Underoath joins us in going full horror-goblin mode while we descend into full-blown extraterrestrial delirium, tackling The Fourth Kind, Signs, and Fire in the Sky — three films that prove aliens really might exist, but also might have the collective IQ of a Roomba in a bathtub. We kick off with The Fourth Kind (2009) — directed by Olatunde Osunsanmi, starring Milla Jovovich, a bunch of owls with boundary issues, and “archival footage” that is approximately as convincing as a Bigfoot found on Etsy. The gang debates whether the aliens were scary or if the real villain was hypnotherapy, and how the film somehow made “ancient Sumerian alien yelling” a plot device. We also discuss the Nome, Alaska lawsuits, the fake websites, and why the studio absolutely deserved to be sued by the state of Alaska for gaslighting an entire population. Then we plunge headfirst into Signs (2002), where M. Night Shyamalan brings us aliens so technologically advanced they can cross galaxies but can't figure out a damn doorknob. We're talking crop circles, Pennsylvania dad vibes, Joaquin Phoenix swinging for the fences (literally), and Mel Gibson crying like it earned him a punch card at the “Prestige Actor Sadness Rewards Program.” Finally, we arrive at the king of UFO trauma: Fire in the Sky (1993), directed by Robert Lieberman, featuring the most infamous alien encounter ever committed to film and Travis Walton, the patron saint of “I swear the aliens did it.” The hosts scream about the abduction sequence like a group therapy session for people who've all watched this movie too young and were never the same. The words “shitty aliens and fucking Travis” are spoken enough times to summon some kind of cosmic lawsuit.Along the way we detour into:• Alien allergies• Crop circles as early-2000s clout chasing• Water-allergic humans (apparently real???)• Whether aliens would choose to invade Pennsylvaniaof all places• How Signs accidentally invented a new method of irrigating corn•How Scary Movie 3 permanently corrupted the DNA of Signs for all of us.• The eternal philosophical question: are owls just shitty aliens in disguise? If you like horror podcasts that sound like three guys locked in a basement joking about being abducted mid-episode, this one is for you.Store: CREEP-O-RAMAYouTube: @creep-o-ramaChris: @chrisunderoathJosh: @joshblevesqueArtwork: @bargainbinblasphemyTheme: @imfigureAudio:@stranjlove

When the loudest voices in health are selling confusion, fear, and the next quick fix, it's hard to know what — or who — to trust. That's exactly why conversations like this one matter. Dr. David Katz has spent decades cutting through the chaos with uncommon clarity. A renowned physician, bestselling author, and one of the most influential thinkers in nutrition and preventive medicine, his work has helped millions rethink the very basics of how we eat and how we live. In this very special episode, he unpacks what determines human health, what real nourishment looks like, and why choosing it now is more radical — and more necessary — than ever. If you've ever wondered what's true, what's marketing, and what actually moves the needle on well-being, this is a must-listen conversation. What we discuss in this episode: The nutrition pattern humans are biologically built for. Why fiber is non-negotiable for long-term health. Why smart regulations save lives — and what happens when they're missing. How Big Food and Big Tobacco use the same playbook to keep us hooked.  Methylcellulose: what it is, where it comes from, and why it's misunderstood. Why beef tops the list as the most environmentally destructive food. The fundamentals of longevity that anyone can put into practice. The biggest misconceptions most people have about staying healthy. Resources:  https://davidkatzmd.com/ Dr. David L. #198: Is it actually embarrassing to have a boyfriend or are we finally refusing to shrink our identities for a relationship status? We dive into the viral question with life coach MMeenu, exploring how women's autonomy, financial power, and tighter social circles are changing what partnership needs to deliver. When independence is real and community is strong, the bar shifts from optics to value: emotional maturity, conflict repair, and shared vision. We talk about the psychology behind keeping love offline, the difference between privacy and secrecy, and why public claims can feel risky in the age of screenshots and instant commentary. Soft launching isn't coyness; it can be relationship hygiene, protecting something you care about from noise while it earns its footing. We also get honest about the honeymoon phase and brain chemistry, the routines that keep your identity steady, and the subtle ways “he completes me” plants dependence in your subconscious. You'll hear practical ways to test compatibility such as waiting a year, watching how both of you handle conflict, and checking whether your offline treatment matches any online narrative. For high-achieving women, we reframe the fear of “looking foolish” into a better metric: are you choosing a value exchange that adds to your life instead of consuming it? Post him or don't, but make the choice from grounded confidence, not crowd pressure or timelines. If you've ever wondered whether keeping your relationship private means you're hiding—or if announcing it makes you vulnerable—you'll leave with a clearer lens and tools to stay you while choosing love. Subscribe to Babble's Nonsense and Transcend Into Wellness, then share this episode with a friend who swears they'll soft launch forever. Your take: privacy, secrecy, or proud announcement? 94: Reporting on Population – Sense and Nonsense

GrowthBusters

Population growth is making headlines for the wrong reason or with a biased perspective. It's too easy to draw erroneous conclusions about dropping fertility rates around the world. A surge of news stories from NPR compels us to offer both praise and criticism. Population growth appears to be coming to an end, and that's getting all the oxygen, not the fact that we have an overpopulation crisis. In fact, the word "overpopulation" is not heard even once in the 16 stories we analyzed. Because the subject is brushed under the rug, reported infrequently or inaccurately, widespread misunderstandings among the public and policymakers persist. So, we decided 16 stories about "smaller families," "low birth rates," "depopulation," and "population decline" in 4 months from National Public Radio offered a good opportunity for us to do some analysis and offer suggestions. Our hope is that reporting might improve if journalists listen to this episode. We specifically mention NPR's Scott Simon, Brian Mann, Sarah McCammon, and Michel Martin. We also mention Wellesley College economist Phillip Levine, and offer some praise for The Rewilding Institute's John Davis. And we hear briefly from the U.N.'s Vladimira Kantorova in one of the stories. The work of these journalists also appeared in the NPR series: John Ruwitch, Jasmine Ling, Kristin Wright, Marisa Peñaloza, Hanna Merzbach, Christina Cala, Dalia Mortada, Michelle Jokisch Polo, Clara Hulet, Anthony Kuhn, Ayman Oghanna, and Code Switch podcast hosts Gene Demby and B.A. Parker. On this week's episode of So What Now?, Dex and I got honest about how the fall season can sneak up on your emotions and shift your whole vibe. I shared how getting outside, staying active, and even slipping in a little travel keeps the fall blues from knocking me off my game. We encouraged everyone to pick one short-term goal to finish by December and actually write the plan—because listen, accountability is peak grown-woman energy. And yes, I had to remind y'all that talking to a counselor or therapist is not a weakness; sometimes you need a professional to help you sort through the heavy stuff. Then we moved into the deeper conversation: requiring respect from your parents as an adult. With the holidays coming up, some of us are about to be around family members we've been dodging all year—and suddenly the group chat ain't enough, you actually have to see them. Dex and I unpacked how to separate your parents' disapproval from your identity because their expectations do not define your worth. At the end of the day, you can't force anyone—parent or not—to change, but you absolutely can choose how you show up and respond. Since Thanksgiving is around the corner, we wrapped the episode by talking about our upcoming Friendsgiving and how grateful we are for the community that loves us loud and loves us well.  Tune is this week for a discussion on celebrating friendship, growth, and the beauty of chosen family.
