In this episode my guest is Phil Duffy, a senior student of Sifu Wan Kei-Ho from Hong Kong, who carries on a lineage of Northern Shaolin and Buk Sing Choy Li Fut from the famous masters Ku Yu Chang and Tam Sam. Buk Sing is a much rarer sub style of Choy Li Fut that involves less long forms and more conditioning and drills, and it's the same style of Choy Li Fut that I learned in the UK, so when I met Phil back in the 2000s we had a lot to talk about. We've kept in touch over the years so it was good to catch up again for a chat. Here we get into the differences between the various Choy Li Fut styles, how it's different training martial arts in Asia compared to the west, and we talk about the key to it all, the ging (or jin) - that special type of soft power, that some people call Internal power - that the Chinese martial arts are famous for, and how it's used in Choy Li Fut. We also talk about the famed Wing Chun / Choy Li Fut rivalry and how Choy Li Fut relates to other styles from the same area of China, like the older Hung Kuen style. By committing yourself to regular, focused practice and paying with your time and effort you earn the real skills, physique, and health benefits of your training. In today's world many people are asking questions regarding the validity of Tai Chi as a martial art and questioning whether you can become a powerful fighter using only Tai Chi. The Way through Baguazhang - 八卦掌道

The Way through Baguazhang - 八卦掌道

☳ I seriously need a cup of tea 茶. Any type of tea 茶: Green tea 綠茶, black tea 紅茶, oolong 烏龍茶 or pu-erh 普洱茶. I think it is time for my own bit of Tea Time equals Me Time. ☵ I have just come back from yet another regular session of Baguazhang 八卦掌 and I discovered a note on my desk which basically reads that I have been living in a glass tower: A show-pony going nowhere. ☶ I have been doing Baguazhang for as long as there has been Avatar Aang 降卋神通 and The Last Airbender show. The series was what got me into it. I really loved the accurately animated martial moves of Baguazhang 八卦掌, Tai Chi 太極拳, Northern Shaolin 北少林拳, Hung Gar 洪家拳 and Southern Praying Mantis 螳螂拳. ☰ Back then, I thought, if I stick it out and do as much as they do in the Chinese wushu schools I also would be able to do amazing feats. That did not come to pass. Instead I became a qigong master 氣功主. ☷ Did I manifest my own version of Avatar Aang becoming an energy bender at the end of the his ultimate journey? ☱ And if I did, am I now manifesting the next stage along the journey? ☲ These are big questions that will in time get answered, like why do I keep switching between simplified, traditional and rectified Chinese characters? ☴ Perhaps I enjoy spinning in circles. I used to do that a lot in primary school before I even knew there was a martial art called Baguazhang 八卦掌. It always made me be free like floating on air... Silly isn't it. But that is the first experience I can share about Baguazhang 八卦掌 and quantum physics. In very basic terms: The centre of time is the same point as our centre of space. What happened in our past is only a reflection of what will happen in the future at equal distances. Actually its the other way round - Our perception of it is back-to-front. Ponder on that. You will now need that cup tea. Because I bet that as soon as you have read this paragraph, your mind will start racing to connect the dots for you. Liked what you heard & want to connect with me? OK, I kind of go off on a big rant here about traditional Kung Fu forms and Karate kata based on my years of training Hung Gar, Northern Shaolin, Southern Crane, Hsing I, Tai Chi and Wing Chun Kung Fu.  Are they at all useful for learning how to fight? In this episode I refer to an article I wrote called "How to Make Sure Your Martial Art Will Work in the Street" - you can find that here: http://selfdefensetutorials.com/how-to-make-sure-martial-art-work-street/ You can also find the video version of that article, called "5 Steps to Make Your Martial Arts Techniques Functional in Real Life" on Youtube here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VC1-vgMh2l0 OSSSS, Stephan Kesting

After high school, he moved to Culver City, Los Angeles to pursue a career in the film industry. There, he met Grandmaster Hawkins Cheung, a childhood friend of Bruce Lee and Ip Man’s most senior US student.
