On February 14, 2018, an active killer attacked the students of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland Florida killing 17 people and wounding another 17 people. The shooter then managed to flee the scene by slipping in with other students. The shooter was apprehended without incident over an hour later. In the months and years that followed this incident there was a firestorm of media coverage and legal actions directed at responding law enforcement agencies not only criticizing their response to the incident but also their failure to intervene with the shooter despite numerous red flags that preexisted the incident. Additionally, a Broward County Sheriff's Office School Resource Officer was charged, but acquitted, of child neglect and culpable negligence. There were also more than 50 civil suits filed resulting in millions of dollars in settlements as well as reassignments and resignations in the responding agencies. My guest today is Chief Clyde Parry. On the day of this incident Clyde was the interim Chief for the neighboring City of Coral Springs Florida and was responsible for setting up the initial incident command post and assuming incident command for the event. Clyde began his law enforcement career with the Derry Borough Police Department near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1986. In May of 1987 he relocated to Florida and began his career with the Coral Springs Police Department where he worked his way up through the ranks from Patrol Officer to Chief of Police. Clyde was sworn in as the permanent Chief of Coral Springs PD just 19 days after this event. Remember Valentine's Day before the Parkland Florida shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School? How many memories survive for the parents who lost children at that horrific event? One father, Manuel Oliver, has made a mission of continuing his son Joaquin's activism against gun violence and has filed an international lawsuit condemning the American laws and corrupt culture that allow gun violence like the Parkland Massacre to flourish. The suit is Joaquin Oliver vs. the USA for the right to live free from gun violence, brought by Global Action Against Gun Violence. In this episode, Manny talks to Radio GAG about the suit. Our In Memoriam is for Richard Henderson, who died not far from his home in Brooklyn, NY, standing up to bullies on the subway train. She started her Instagram account and consulting practice, The PTSD SLP, after experiencing a traumatic event at work. This experience led Rachel to discover trauma-informed care and how it could help her better serve her students and professionals understand howIn this episode, she talks about what trauma-informed care is, why it matters, and how to apply the principles to your interactions. This isn't a private practice-specific episode but it's information that all private practitioners need - even if you don't think you need to know it. I promise. This episode is well worth your time because it will inform how you practice and how to interact with not just clients, but everyone you know. Rachel Archambault, MA CCC SLP, is an SLP Program Specialist in Broward County Florida. Previously, she was an SLP at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland Florida. She found trauma-informed care and has been presenting to SLPs and related fields ever since. Rachel created @PTSD.SLP to serve as a place where she could post resources, answer questions, and support SLPs using trauma-informed care. Rachel is also a cohost of the Speech Science Podcast. She recently created PTSD SLP, LLC to provide trauma-informed consultations and presentations to educators and healthcare providers. Welcome back everybody to the conclusion of my interview with my special guest, Retired ATF Deputy Assistant Director, former NYPD homicide detective, and author of the bestselling book, The Deadly Path: How Operation Fast & Furious and Bad Lawyers Armed Mexican Cartels, Peter Forcelli. If you like heroes, homicide, government corruption at the highest levels, a government whistle blower, and good old fashioned police work, you're going to love this episode. Peter was a "whistleblower," who came forward and testified in the congressional inquiry into the "Operation Fast & Furious" scandal, following the death of Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry.Over the span of his career, Peter Forcelli served in leadership positions within ATF in Phoenix, Arizona; Eastern Canada; Miami, Florida and in ATF Headquarters. While serving as the Special Agent in Charge of the Miami Field Division, he oversaw ATF's response to several mass shootings, including those at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, and Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, in Parkland Florida. He also oversaw ATF's investigation into Omar Mateen and his acquisition of the firearms that were used in the Pulse Nightclub shooting.Peter Forcelli has also been involved in the exoneration of eight people who were wrongfully arrested and convicted in the Bronx, New York, for murders that they did not commit.Peter is a survivor of the 9/11 Terrorist Attacks on the World Trade Center, and the lung cancer that he later developed because of his work in the rescue and recovery efforts at Ground Zero. He is a recurring guest speaker at the 9/11 Memorial and Museum.Like any cop, sometimes we need backup. So, my good friend, Retired DEA Special Agent Steve Murphy of the Game of Crimes podcast and DEA Narcos, joined me for this interview. Steve is no stranger to Cartels because he and his partner, Javier Pena's work, bringing down Pablo Escobar and the Medellín Cartel. In today's episode we discuss:· More government coverups and corruption involving Operation Fast and Furious. The ongoing catastrophe at our southern border and what can be done about it.· The personal and professional damage caused to Peter, and his family, by him being a whistleblower.· Red flags that point to dysfunction in law enforcement agencies – resulting in larger issues for leadership – and how to resolve them?· Mass shootings in the United States and what should have been done to prevent them, and how we can prevent more of them happening.· How some federal prosecutors continue to not charge criminals for violating federal firearms laws – and other crimes – and what can be done to remedy the problem.· Are ‘tough gun laws' actually solving any problems?Visit Peter on his website!Check out DEA Narcos with Steve MurphyCheck out Field Training (Brew City Blues Book 1)!!Enjoy the Cops and Writers book series. Please visit the Cops and Writers website. "If we are looking for light in the darkness, sometimes it doesn't appear until we create it." - Samantha NovickIn moments of great tragedy, pain, uncertainty, loss, and suffering I often look for perspective, and for practices, that help me to find some light in the darkness.Often these practices (for me) are found in community, with friends, and through conversations on the podcast. This past week with the war beginning in Israel it is again one of these times as some of the worst parts of humanity have been fully on display, and the enormity of the challenges and the suffering that is unfolding is immense. And in the midst of things, I was reminded of a conversation I had in 2020 with Samantha Novick. I first met Samantha, who goes by Sam, in Parkland Florida. At the time I had flown to Parkland to sit down for a podcast conversation with students and community organizers after the mass shooting that took place at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. Sam was one of the community organizers who helped support students in the aftermath and helped coordinate the March for Our Lives event there. During that conversation I listened as they shared how they were:Finding hopeTransforming pain into purposeGetting through such a tragedyAnd ultimately why they chose to spread messages of kindness and love in response to such hatred. It was extraordinary to hear their responses, and to witness what is possible for human beings in the face of such dark times. Fast forward to 2020 and I found myself sitting with Sam again. And again we explored how she finds light, hope, and joy in the face of immense challenges. Including being in the throes of the pandemic, an election year in the US, civil rights protests...the list went on. And while the context, the events, and the time is different than it was then, there are emotional undertones that are similar. My hope is that if you are sitting with the immensity of recent events, that messages that Sam shared by way of her own story and experiences might be helpful to hear today, including:The role of self-compassion and giving oneself permission to feelGetting out in natureRemembering challenging events throughout history to gain perspectiveAnd doing kind acts for othersAs a close to today's practice I will invite questions to explore what might help to find, and create light, in the coming days and weeks. Hear the full conversation with Sam Novick from 2020 here: Choosing to Look for the GoodThanks for practicing with us. Til next Tuesday,-JoshuaSupport the show

Tears flow in court today as the sheriff's deputy who was accused of failing to confront the gunman during the mass school shooting in Parkland Florida is found not guilty. One more week to go in this dystopian election season. We're dealing with a Republican party with no plans to fix any of the problems plaguing our world today. All they do is stoke fear, blame Democrats and lie. About everything. So when I saw that a new book was out called "How to Win the War on Truth: An Illustrated Guide to How Mistruths Are Sold, Why They Stick, and How to Reclaim Reality." Its author Samuel C. Spitale joins us today, hopefully with some advice we can put into play over the next six days. I'm pondering when I'll leave Twitter as the self-proclaimed "chief Twit" exhibits the worst of the behavior he claims he wants to prevent. It's the Opposite World of which I speak all the time and it's despicable. I'm dealing with the depths to which this nation has sunk thanks to the ugliness of one man who made it ok for people to show their ugliest qualities, to show their bigotry, racism and ignorance loudly and, inconceivably, proudly. And now I'm watching the families whose loved ones were murdered by the mass murderer in Parkland Florida (about 10 minutes from where I'm sitting) as they make their final statements to the killer before he's locked away for the rest of his life. I'm worried about our future. I don't think we have one. And that's where I am today.... Gee, let's put on a show!

On this week's show, Scott and Shaun welcome back Retired Chief Tony Pustizzi of the Coral Springs, Florida Police Department (see Episodes 58 & 84) to discuss the impact of a jury's recent, non-unanimous verdict to sentence convicted murderer, Nickolas Cruz to life in prison over the death penalty for his actions during the February 2018 Parkland (Florida) School shooting. Chief Tony Pustizzi (Ret.) began his career with the Coral Springs Police Department in 1988. Over his 30-year tenure, he supervised every unit within the agency with a strong emphasis on investigations, including homicide and special victims. Tony served on the SWAT team for 15 years where the last eight he was team commander. Tony rose through the ranks to ultimately become chief of police in 2012. He also served as the city's interim city manager and retired in March 2018 as the chief of police/deputy city manager. In January 2019, Tony came out of retirement to serve as the special counsel to the new sheriff of Broward County upon his appointment by the governor of the state of Florida.During the school massacre on February 14, 2018, where a former student entered Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland Florida and killed 17 innocent people and injured another 17 students, Chief Pustizzi, along with members of his agency, arrived at the school within minutes of being notified and was instrumental in organizing a complex law enforcement approach, including stopping and capturing the killer and extracting victims from within the school was initiated.Tony now conducts trainings nationwide on school and workplace violence preparedness as he is a firm believer that seconds save lives and can attest that the Hero911 app for police would have alerted his officers minutes earlier, possibly saving lives during the incident he was directly involved in. In this episode, we share our thoughts on the Nikolas Cruz verdict and invite Michael Riley, Kaitlin's father and former Assistant State Attorney in South Florida, to weigh in on the jury's decision to reject the death penalty and what it means for school safety moving forward. On this week's show, Chris and Shaun welcome back Retired Chief Tony Pustizzi (Episode 58):https://www.buzzsprout.com/1342087/episodes/9698408Chief Pustizzi discusses some of the reported leadership issues associated with the tragic school shooting that occurred at the Robb Elementary School on May 24th, 2022 in Uvalde, Texas. Chief Pustizzi's shares his unique and unfortunate experiences in the realm of school shooter response to shed some better light on some of the crisis leadership that is now impacting modern policing. In this episode we interview Matt Deitsch, artist, journalist, organizer and former founder and director of March For Our Lives. This episode is a bit different from many of ours. Rarely have we engaged with the politics of gun control, or with an area so tightly situated and controlled within the arena of electoral politics and non profit organizing. But we felt that interviewing Matt offered a unique opportunity to examine the politics of gun control in the so-called United States, and the relationship between movements against gun violence and mass shooters and the Democratic Party, their think tanks, well funded non profit organizations and the ruling class. Matt presents a specifically interesting perspective, as someone who was activated by the devastating gun violence in Parkland Florida, and politicized through the organizing efforts they and others undertook through their organization March For Our Lives. Also as someone who provides a highly critical reflection around the work they and others undertook in relation to that movement, but who also believes they learned valuable lessons for mass organizing. Along other things Matt talks about organizing as youth, the strengths, limitations and contradictions of that, discusses moments of dialogue with other organizers and youth, particularly ones from different class and racial backgrounds and how these relationships and discussions altered their own political viewpoint around the scope of issues of violence. As someone who has spent much of the last 4 years deeply involved in electoral organizing, Matt cautions against the amount of energy put into it and highlights some of the forces most invested in that use of organizer time and effort. Ultimately Matt argues for the essential work of political education, of building power outside of the electoral arena, and holding a political horizon based in anti-imperialism, abolition, and socialism. They draw out linkages of different forms of violence and highlights the bipartisan influence of the police state and the military industrial complex on the politics of gun control reform as an antidote to violence, within the politics of either dominant party. Just as a note, this episode was recorded prior to the new bipartisan gun legislation or the court's recent decision around concealed carry restrictions, which would likely have had minimal impact on the discussion. It was also recorded before the courts officially gutted Roe. But there are many cautionary perspectives and suggested approaches that we think warrant consideration and are relevant to a new generation of people hopefully pushed into action by the violence of all aspects of the US state. In May 2022, The Washington Post reported that more than 311,000 students have experienced gun violence at school since the 1999 mass shooting at Columbine High School in Colorado. And that includes the 500 students that experienced tragedy in their school district on May 24, 2022, in Uvalde, TX where 19 students and 2 teachers were killed. In today's episode, we're honored to be talking with Dr. Cissy Reynolds-Perez, Supt., Kingsville ISD - an educator who has taught and led schools at all levels and who truly "walks the talk." Not only has she engaged the students in the districts where she has worked but has engaged the community to talk about how to keep schools safer. We first met Dr. Perez in2018 when she was principal at W.B. Ray High School, Corpus Christi ISD, Corpus Christi, TX after she had been interviewed by Rachel Martin on NPR's Morning Edition. Dr. Perez talked about "Post Shooting: Classes to Resume at Santa Fe (TX) High School." After the Parkland (FL) school shooting, she noticed people saying "Oh, this is just another school shooting." She wanted her students to be aware that these were real people, real teachers, real coaches falling victim to the violence. She had them write letters to her to let her know what their thoughts were about this and if they had suggestions for her about preventing similar incidents at their school. We reached out to Dr. Perez and she responded immediately to invite us to Ray High School to tell her more about our discipline management program, reThinkIt!, which had already prevented a school shooting at a Houston-area middle school. In her office, we saw the high stack of letters in a chair in the corner of the room - each with notes scribbled on them and highlighted content. She shared how she had walked into a high school classroom and pulled out some of those letters and started talking about the recommendations the students had made. The students were floored - they couldn't imagine the principal of their high school would take the time to listen to them. But she did and she continues to do that today, which is why she invited two students from her new district, Kingsville ISD, in Kingsville, TX to speak with us. You'll hear their voices in Episode #8.For the next 20 minutes, you'll be glad you took the time to listen to Dr. Perez share her experiences before, during, and after the Uvalde, TX school shooting while guiding us through her advice on where we go next to keep our schools safer.
Adam and Dr. Drew open the show reading the long promised and thoroughly insane LA Times op-ed that was released shortly after the tragic school shooting in Parkland Florida. They then turn to the phones and speak to a caller from Nashville who wants to discuss how his city dealt with homelessness as juxtaposed against how LA does it. They also speak to a caller looking for advice on her marriage and Drew talks more about his experience navigating his time in the middle east. As the show wraps up Adam points out an inherent flaw in team mentality. Please Support Our Sponsors: The Jordan Harbinger Show Lifelock.com promo code ADAM

The audience will get a true sense of Linda's dedication to gun safety and ending the epidemic of senseless and preventable gun violence in our country. Linda has turned the ultimate tragedy of the loss of a child into a call for action. Linda believes in celebrating Scott's life, not mourning his death. Ending the epidemic of gun violence is twofold; legislation and education. Linda does this through both her legislative efforts in the passing of landmark gun safety legislation and through education with the Scott J Beigel Memorial Fund. It was once said that someone who saves a child, saves the world. Linda's goal is to save as many children as possible to make the world a better place. People should listen because senseless and preventable gun violence can only be eradicated with the community and national effort. We need the help of your listeners to support the cause of ending gun violence in this country. As Linda has said, "We all have the right to be safe" "We all have the right to live without fear"Linda Beigel Schulman is the mother of Scott J. Beigel, the geography teacher and cross-country coach who sacrificed his life while saving the lives of 31 of his students at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School massacre in Parkland Florida on February 14, 2018. Linda lives in Dix Hills, New York. She obtained her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education from the University of Arizona and her Master's Degree in Science from Long Island University. Linda is a licensed teacher and has taught in Arizona and abroad. Linda is a strong and staunch advocate for reasonable gun safety legislation on both a State and Federal level. Linda has chosen to turn the senseless murder of her son into her life's mission on multiple levels. Linda was instrumental in the passage of the “Red Flag Law” in Florida right after the killing of her son Scott. Within weeks of Scott's murder, Linda flew to Tallahassee to speak before both the Florida Senate Appropriations Committee and the Florida House Appropriations Committee. Linda has also met with various Florida state legislators to help ensure the passage of Florida's Flag Law.In March of 2020, the Town of Huntington, New York recognized Linda as a Woman of Distinction for her dedication and work on behalf of the Scott J Beigel Memorial Fund.In 2021, the New York State Senate and Assembly passed the “Scott J Beigel Untraceable Receiver Act” which was signed into law by Gov. Hochulon on October 28, 2021. The law will ban the possession, manufacture, or sale of “Ghost Guns”. A Ghost Gun is a Do It Yourself firearm that can be purchased online, assembled in less than an hour, and does not have a serial number, thereby making it untraceable. Org: Scott J. Two deadly murders were committed in and around Boston using military grade assault weapons, and both of them happened in the middle of a raging debate around gun control in this country. You might assume I am talking about an incident that happened after the school shootings in Parkland Florida in 2018 or Columbine in 1999, but I'm not. The first crime took place in the sleepy Boston suburb of Needham in 1934, when three gangsters used a stolen Tommy gun to rob the Needham savings bank and murder two policemen. Sadly, this deadly crime took place just months before the 1934 federal firearms act made it illegal for civilians to own machine guns. The second crime we'll discuss took place a generation later, in 1989, in the middle of a heated national debate that resulted in George HW Bush's 1989 limited assault weapons ban, and the stronger 1994 ban that was allowed to expire in 2004. In what has to be the only recorded example of someone going postal in the sky, a disgruntled postal worker killed his ex wife, stole a plane, and spent hours shooting up downtown Boston with an AK-47. “Today's newspaper will only provide me with yesterday's news, leaving me on my own to navigate this day.” - Johnnie Williams IIIShow me some day or one day on your calendar. I've found that (even) tomorrow is nearly impossible to find. This is because they don't really exist… well—- maybe as concepts that we use loosely, as if they make up our reality. Is today the day you stop living your yesterday's? Is today the day you step beyond your comfort zone? Is today the day you join the Thought Tribe? For the purposes of recording this episode, I've done something that I haven't done in many years. I went out and bought a newspaper. But not just any paper- nor is it a local paper. I got one that is available across our country. (2/15/2022 edition) And, as I look at its cover, it speaks of an invasion of one country upon a smaller one. The poor ratings in race relations taken from a gallop poll that I wasn't asked about maybe you were. It speaks of hospitals overwhelmed by Covid and some of them requesting our National Guard. It speaks of a pop stars life as a dad.But most prominently placed on the cover page is what company was crowned king of the Super Bowl commercials, as if they needed any more publicity – or maybe they – being the company, paid for this product placement as well.No words from all that I mentioned empower you on this new day! As I venture further into the paper - headlines are beckoning my attention:-Freedom Convoys (in Canada) spur protests in the south (being America)-Study: COVID 19 linked to stillbirths in unvaccinated-Hong Kong to begin vaccinating 3-year old's amid surge in infections-Arbery's killers are again in court -HBCU bomb threats have roots in history (HBCU's are history black colleges and universities)-Ohio mayor resigns after ice fishing comments -Woman killed in stabbing in NYC-Ukraine's actor president set for real drama-No family should face school shooting horror (parents of 17 kids killed four years ago in Parkland FL, advocate for laws to increase safety)-We escaped freezing to death by making hard choices (how so…)I can only imagine this dose of negativity served up on a dinner plate. Would you eat it if you could see it for what it really is? Maybe… Because you gotta know what's going on right?I'll pass—— and this paper is headed to the trash. Excuse me- the recycle bin, so we might save a few trees that took years to grow and only seconds to cut down, just so we could offer up what I just read as news.Something to Think About…Ask Yourself:What types of stories headline in the paper today? What happened yesterday that you can learn from?Who is authoring the headlines for tomorrow's paper?
