Some people might squirrel away cash in their sock drawer or mattress, or even a freezer if you just moved to the big city. But most people keep the bulk of their hard earned money in either savings or checking accounts. All of these have the same issue however: They don't do anything to protect you from inflation. Welcome to the Just Dumb Enough Podcast. A show that acknowledges no one is always an expert, by dispelling misconceptions with real experts. My guest today is Andrew Parrillo. Andrew is an investment advisor with about five decades of experience, and while this episode shouldn't be considered advice for legal reasons: it is absolutely chalk full of invaluable information. Because we're trying to break down really technical details, it can get a little dry. But make no mistake, I understand money and investing more from this interview than probably any other I've done. Don't be afraid to take notes if you've got free hand. In other news, July is upon us and the rankings are all new: 1. The United States, now led by Texas, Illinois, and Virginia. 2. Canada, with Ontario taking an early lead. 3.
Dr. Parrillo and Dr. Ansari present a cross-cultural study of Hizmet schools in seven countries of varying histories and ethnic compositions. Some are fairly homogeneous, while others are longstanding multicultural, multiracial societies. Some have Muslim-majority populations, others a small Muslim minority. Through hundreds of interviews with students, parents, staff, and financial supporters, the authors explored individual perceptions and experiences, as well as the triad of student, parent, and school interaction. Analyzing the commonality of the schools' structures and processes in different settings, they offer their insights about the schools' success in achieving their twin goals of offering quality education and promoting interethnic harmony. About the Author: Vincent N. Parrillo Prof. Emeritus, Sociology, William Paterson University Vincent N. Parrillo is the author of numerous books and journal articles, some of them translated into ten languages. Mark Parrillo became friends with a classmate in high school who had recently immigrated to the United States from China. Mark's friend got him interested in concepts he hadn't heard about in western culture, including Chi, which is defined in English as “air”, “material energy”, “life force”, or “energy flow.” Mark began practicing Qigong and Chi Kung, which typically include systems of coordinated body-posture, movement, breathing, and meditation. Mark's practice developed to the point where he began experiencing visual and auditory sensations similar to what someone would experience on a powerful psychedelic substance. Mark discusses the benefits these experiences have had in his day to day life as he and his wife raise their young children. The purpose of the podcast is for entertainment and harm reduction. Dr. Lurie earned his bachelors degree at Yale University and his medical degree at Stanford University. He studied cardiovascular medicine at the University of California in San Francisco and later joined the faculty there. He has been on the faculty at the University of Minnesota since 1991. He has mentored scores of research and clinical fellows over the past 30 years and he actively collaborates with multiple scientist colleagues worldwide. In this podcast I discuss Profit Motive: The Salary Revolution in American Government, 1780-1940 (Yale University Press, 2013) with author Nicholas R. Parrillo, professor of law at Yale University. Parrillo’s book was winner of the 2014 Law and Society Association James Willard Hurst Book Prize and the 2014 Annual Scholarship Award from the American Bar Association’s Section on Administrative Law. Per the book jacket, “in America today, a public official’s lawful income consists of a salary. But until a century ago, the law frequently provided for officials to make money on a profit-seeking basis. Prosecutors won a fee for each defendant convicted. Tax collectors received a percentage of each evasion uncovered. Naval officers took a reward for each ship sunk. Numerous other officers were likewise paid for ‘performance.’ This book is the first to document the American government’s for-profit past, to discover how profit-seeking defined officialdom’srelationship to the citizenry, and to explain how lawmakers–by ultimately banishing the profit motive in favor of the salary–transformed that relationship forever.” Parrillo’s intricate analysis adds nuance to the American story of government compensation and explains why government officials made money in ways that today would be deemed necessarily corrupt. Some of the topics we cover are: –The ways American lawmakers made the absence of a profit motive a defining feature of government –The two non-salary forms of payment for government officials that initially predominated in the US –How these two forms of payment tended to give rise to very different social relationships between officials and the people with whom they dealt –Why the flight to salaries was an admission of law’s weakness and failure Learn more about your ad choices.
