The Saturiwa were a Timucua chiefdom centered on the mouth of the St. Johns River in what is now Jacksonville, Florida. One of the 500 indigenous nations & cultures that blanketed North America, they were a prominent political force in the early days of European settlement in Florida, forging friendly relations and alliances with the French Huguenot settlers at Fort Caroline in Saturiwa territory, in 1564-65. The Saturiwa are so called after their chief at the time of contact with the Europeans, King Saturiwa, who was sovereign over thirty other chiefs and their villages. CharlesFort was established when a French expedition, organized by Huguenot leader Admiral Gaspard de Coligny and led by the Norman navigator Jean Ribault, landed at the site on the May River in 1562, before moving north to Port Royal Sound. There, on present-day Parris Island, South Carolina—at that time a part of Florida Territory—Ribault left twenty-eight men to build a settlement. They discuss the passing of House Bill 159 in Kentucky, which decriminalizes unintentional medical errors, making it the first and only state to do so. The bill provides immunity from criminal liability for healthcare workers and encourages a just culture of quality improvement and open communication. Delanor shares the process of writing and championing the bill. They also discuss the impact of the bill on nurse recruitment, retention, and the nursing profession as a whole. Additionally the discussion includes other legislation they have been directly involved in. In this episode of Gov Tech Today, the hosts, Russell Lowery and Jennifer Saha, discuss procurement reform in state government, specifically in California. The Wampanoag were part of a larger group of North American Indians known as the Algonquian.
