In Episode 099 of Now We're Talking, we review the 10-20-30 rule for making presentations and why that rule helps us to be more persuasive.
Being influential and persuasive are professional skills. Salespeople need both but often are not trained in either. Let's look at some new habits which will make all the difference. Being persuasive is a must when convincing buyers to give up their security (money) in exchange for the promise of higher value. Surprisingly, very few salespeople have ever had any presentation training whatsoever. The basics of presenting to an audience or a buyer are the same. It could be one to one or one to many, but there are common skills that are needed. Let's start with the Six Impact Points of Persuasive Presentations. Eyes If we are talking to a buyer group, a board or a few representatives from a department within the client company, we need to engage each of them with eye contact. Holding someone's gaze for around 6 seconds allows us to make our point with becoming too intrusive. Japanese buyers in particular can feel oppressed by prolonged strong eye contact. You should still make eye contact with them, but do it more sparingly. Face Our face, when animated, lends powerful support to our message. When something is great for the client, smile and show pleasure. When something is bad for the client (like taking no action and not buying) show some downheartedness at the thought of the client not getting the wonderful benefits of your solution. Voice Monotone sounds put us to sleep. Our voice tonal modulation is a fantastic instrument. Classical music is full of lulls in the storm and crashing crescendos. Their opposite natures makes the contrast so much more powerful. Slowing words down for emphasis works in any language. Speeding them up also works well to set what we are saying apart from all the other words surrounding that phrase. Injecting power when we say something or taking the power down to almost a whisper, is also a clever variation in tonal delivery. Gestures Gestures come more easily when we are standing rather than seated. Most business meetings I ever attend are seated. However, if you ever have to present something, then stand up and do it. This could be using a whiteboard, flip chart or a slide deck on a screen. Even if you have no visual aids to support you when presenting, if it is a formal presentation like a pitch, still stand up and give your report. When standing, we can make more use of our body language, can make full use of our hands for gestures, we are more visible to all members of the audience no matter where they are seated and we are more relaxed. When we are doing our gestures, we can also do them from a seated position and we should do so. Don't allow the seating arrangements to constrict you. Use your hands to emphasis a point in coordination with you voice and facial expression. This troika is a powerful weapon in the persuasion war. Standing or seated, only ever maintain the one gesture for a maximum of 15 seconds. When teaching presentation skills, I notice some people never use any gestures but others use the same one right throughout. If we hold that position for longer than 15 seconds, the power of that gesture dies and then just becomes annoying to the audience. Pause We want the client to do most of the talking, guided by our well designed questions. We need to introduce conversation gaps through pauses, because the client must absorb what we have said. This means they shouldn't have to listen to anything we are saying now in competition with what we have just said. Pause, remain quiet and let your key points sink in before continuing. Embrace the beauty of the pause. Posture If seated, sit tall. We are here to convey reliability, trust, consistency and attention to detail. A slob collapsed in the chair opposite, isn't likely to succeed on that front. Japanese culture dictates that you sit ramrod straight and off the backrest of the chair. If standing, then stand tall. When standing, that means both legs are kept straight and perpendicular to the floor. Spreading your weight across your legs 60/40 or 70/30, looks far too casual and relaxed for a business meeting, especially when you are the supplicant salesperson.

[03:38] - Dustin talks about what makes an offer irresistible instead of just mildly compelling. He explains that he has a nine-point system, and mentions what the first of these points is. [07:00] - Dustin discusses the hot-button close. He offers some examples of hot buttons that various audience members might have. [10:37] - We hear more about Dustin’s perspective on customer appreciation events and strategies. He then explains that he likes to position events as bonuses. He also likes to include a physical component in bonuses. [13:21] - Stephan points out that having a physical component reduces the return rate. Dustin then expands on that concept. He and Stephan then discuss people wanting refunds past the money-back guarantee time. [16:22] - We hear why Stephan plans to start taking Dustin’s advice to minimize people asking for refunds. [18:15] - Dustin piggybacks off of what Stephan has been saying, pointing out that you don’t personally need to reach out to customers yourself. Instead, you can outsource this task. [19:40] - Is it better to use limiters based on time or quantity? Dustin prefers to use both whenever possible. [24:30] - Stephan relates what he learned about pickup to the ideas that Dustin has been offering. Dustin then talks about a study involving copy machines that reveals the importance of giving a reason. [28:30] - What is “the benefit of the benefit,” and what does it really mean? Dustin answers, then talks about how he incorporates this into his presentations. [32:59] - Dustin walks us through the typical structure of one of his presentations. [35:08] - Dustin begins explaining the five components of a presentation that he mentioned a moment earlier. These are: 1. the intro, 2. the story, 3. the offer, 4. the body, and 5. the close. [37:28] - What are some best practices for doing a really effective close? Dustin reveals that a successful close depends on doing things right throughout your presentation. [40:29] - Stephan points out that Dustin’s advice is basically a yes ladder. Dustin then relates this back to the dating world, in which you don’t immediately get married. [41:49] - The more time you have with a prospect, the better, Dustin explains. [43:54] - What do you do if you’re giving a presentation where you aren’t allowed to sell from stage, and no pitching is allowed? [47:04] - Dustin offers two more ways to get around a no-pitching or no-sales rule in a presentation. [49:51] - Everybody has a mobile phone, Dustin points out, so getting them to text may be easier. He then explains his techniques [52:28] - Stephan provides a couple tools for listeners, explaining that he uses Leadpages and the Leaddigits tool. If all my talents and powers were to be taken from me by some inscrutable Providence, and I had my choice of keeping but one, I would unhesitatingly ask to be allowed to keep the power of speaking, for through it I would quickly recover all the rest. —Daniel Webster Have you happened to notice the dramatic changes that have evolved in presentations, communication, and training over the last twenty years? The basic focus used to be on education. Now, the latest research is all about how to grab your audience’s attention and then maintain their interest. We can no longer focus simply on educating; we must now entertain. We must keep our audiences mentally engaged. Great persuaders can maintain the attention of their audience. Research shows that people’s attention spans are getting shorter and shorter. You don’t have to be a stand-up comedian, but you do have to make sure your audience sticks with you, your words resonate with them, they pay attention, and they understand you. The moment you lose their attention, you can no longer persuade them. You could have a great Website, be a sharp dresser, publish a great brochure, or have any manner of impressive credentials. The reality is, however, that the number-one persuasion tool is you, and a big part of how you present yourself is through your communication. Long gone are the days of counting on the subject matter to speak compellingly for itself, compensating for your inadequacies as a presenter. Nowadays, you’ve got to get inside your audience’s minds, and you’ve got to get there fast. It can take only seconds before people’s minds start to wander. To combat this tendency, you have to educate, inspire, and entertain with passion, compassion, and purpose. Great persuaders are great communicators. Well-known motivational speaker and best-selling author Jim Rohm said it best: “When I learned how to effectively persuade and communicate, my income went from six digits to seven digits.” Your communication skills are critical for your success, yet this is another set of overlooked skills that are not effectively taught in school. Communication includes phone skills, face-to-face interactions, group presentations, and even email. Most persuaders feel, incorrectly, that they have above-average communication skills. Are yours “above average” too? Our research shows that 34 percent of persuaders feel they have mastered the ability to effectively communicate. However, by talking to your audience, we know that your presentation and communication mastery was rated at only 11 percent. Great persuaders work on their presentation skills on a continual basis. There is always something to fine-tune and improve. The studies show that, on average, a persuader communicates six to eight features of his product or service to his audience, but the average person will only remember one, two, or three of them. In over 40 percent of cases, the person will remember one of the features incorrectly. In 30 percent of cases, the person remembers a feature that was never even mentioned by the persuader. (Ouch!) We also found that 93 percent of persuadees misunderstood some part of a persuader’s message. The worst part is that most of them did not ask a question or even try to seek clarification. Remember, a confused mind says no. A “confused mind,” has to think about it. A “confused mind,” will get back to you. A confused mind is hard to persuade and influence.
