"What is it about my music that's touching other people?" One of the forefathers of techno reflects on his legacy, the state of techno music and the city of Detroit live from IMS. Most people in nightlife are familiar with the name Juan Atkins. One of the originators of techno, he grew up in Belleville, a middle-class suburb of Detroit, and would become one of the Belleville Three alongside Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson. This first wave of Detroit techno artists was inspired by the late night emissions of radio DJ The Electrifying Mojo—a late-night presenter who famously mixed different synth music, like Krautrock and the German outfit Kraftwerk—and the writing of futurists like Alvin Toffler, who imagined a different, utopic vision of urban life and technology. In this keynote interview recorded live at International Music Summit in Ibiza, Atkins reflects on his roots and the musical movement that's grown from his first experiments with techno in the '80s. Returning to his adolescence, he unpacks the origins of his electro collaboration Cybotron, his solo project Model 500 (coming to Houghton this year) and his label, Metroplex, which became a blueprint for a hoard of techno imprints that would emerge in its wake. Now 61, Atkins also reflects on the broader impact music has had on his life—he has given lectures on the intersection of physics, music and spirituality—as well as the remaining stones left unturned as he enters the (very much still active) sunset in his career. City scenes is our weekly Thursday feature in which we dive head first into the music scene of a particular city. We're going through the alphabet from A-Z. Last week for C we looked at Chicago and this we're driving 4 and half hours down the road into Michigan and we're looking at Detroit. Detroit is a city of 4,5 million people in the midwestern state of Michigan, USA. It's a city with a huge industrial history and a massive musical legacy. Known as the motor city due to the High concentration of car factories in the city that attracted thousands of people searching for work in the great migration that we heard about last week. Detroit is famous for the sounds of Mo-town, Rock Music, Hip Hop and Techno and today we're going to be taking a glimpse at all of these sounds. Before any of these genres or scenes existed, Detroit had a huge history of Gospel, Jazz and Blues music, and no doubt that all those sounds informed what came later in the city, but the sound that immortalized Detroit as a legendary musical city is the sound of Motown. Motown records is one of the most significant record labels in the history of American R&B and soul music. It takes it's name from Detroit's nickname of the motor city and it was founded in the 1950s by a motor factory worker called Berry Gordy. Motown went on to become home to some of the biggest names in Soul Music such as Marvin Gaye, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross & The Supremes, The Four Tops, Martha Reeves & the Vandellas and The Jackson 5. Detroit also has a huge legacy of rock music and one band from Detroit that are often cited as being one of the most important rock bands in history, named after their home town, is the Motor City 5 or MC5, a band who spent years playing relentlessly in every venue around Detroit before they ended up getting a record Deal. They were known for their pro-civil rights and anti-establishment politics and heavy rock sound that went on to inspire bands like the Sex Pistols and the clash to create what went on to become punk music. The genre that Detroit is perhaps most exclusively credited with being the birthplace of is Detroit Techno. By the mid 1980s, the car industry that had seen Detroit thriving in the 1960s had already been in Decline for some time. The deindustrialization of the city, with factories closing down led to a phenomenon called “white flight” with the city's white middle class leaving Detroit and taking a lot of the city's wealth with them. The Population dropped to around 800,000 people and the city was full of abandoned houses, factories and warehouses. This harsh environment however served as the inspiration for what became one of the biggest subcultures in history. Drawing on the bleak visions of a deprived city that surrounded them and inspired by a particularly legendary radio DJ called the electrifying mojo who would play early European electronic music by the likes of Kraftwerk and Giorgio Moroder as well as the funk sound of bands like parliament and the B52s, and the newly emerging electro hip hop sounds of the likes of Afrika Bambaataa, young producers like juan Atkins, Kevin Saunderson, Eddie Folkes and Derrick May transformed the mechanic, industrial and machine driven history of their city into music that was made with machines like drum machines and synthesizers based on repetition and groove. This was the sound of Techno. An early precursor to the sound of techno that bridged the gap between the sounds that the electrifying mojo was playing on the radio and what became techno was the music of a duo called Cybotron. Detroit Techno went on to be developed and refined to it's rhythmic essence by legendary producers like Jeff Mills and Underground Resistance. In this City Scene we heard Motown, rock and techno but Detroit is the birthplace of so many other famous artists and sounds including Madonna, Eminem, Sufjan Stevens, Aaliyah, J Dilla. Carl Craig, Drexciya, Moodyman and many more.

KAPPA FUTUR FESTIVAL 2022 LINE-UP   Hello Everybody Today we will discover what's the line up of Kappa Futur Festival, and how's I going to be.  The award-winning festival is back for its ninth edition at the famous Dora Park, Italy with an extra day added. Running from July 1 to 3, this renowned techno festival will see huge names of the industry perform including, Amelie Lens, Ben Böhmer, Four Tet, Peggy Gou and many more.   Day one will see Belgium's Amelie Lens, Swiss DJAndrea Oliva, Germany's acclaimed Ben Böhmer (playing live), DJ Boris Brejcha and Ibiza-based Chelina Manuhutu — with Four Tet making his Kappa Futur debut. Résumé Nous sommes au début des années 80, plus précisément en 1981, lorsque Juan Atkins fait équipe avec un camarade de son lycée, Richard Davies. C'est un vétéran du Vietnam, qui avait décidé de se faire appeler tout simplement 3070. C'était quelqu'un de très isolé, il possédait un des premiers séquenceurs, un Roland MSK-100. Tous les deux ont fait équipe et se sont nommés Cybotron, un nom futuriste en accord avec des idées empruntées à la science-fiction, à Kraftwerk mais aussi au livre La troisième vague d'Alvin Toffler. Juan Atkins disait : « Nous avions toujours été passionnés par les choses futuristes. Nous avions tout un tas de concepts en tête pour Cybotron, comme un dictionnaire du parler techno ou une sorte d'idée globale que nous avions nommée la Grille. Ça ressemblait à un jeu vidéo auquel on accédait par différents niveaux ». En 1984, le groupe sort le morceau Techno City. Il est au moins aussi important dans la carrière du groupe que le single Clear, sorti quelques années plus tôt. Et pour cause, Techno City passe pour être à l'origine du terme Techno selon certaines versions de l'histoire de la fondation du genre. Car l'histoire de la techno est très particulière, elle n'a pas de récit officiel, donc difficile de donner des informations sures. Evidemment, le nom du titre est en lien direct avec Détroit, ville industrielle et ville censé être à la pointe de la modernité. C'est le début d'une belle histoire d'amour qui inondera par la suite l'Europe, jusqu'à aujourd'hui. Shot just a week after his Super Bowl Pepsi commercial with Steve Carrell and Cardi B aired, Lil Jon defies expectation yet again with his song selections on Let the Record Show. Taking us back through his early years, Lil Jon reveals the songs that shaped his tastes, with classic picks such as Cybotron’s “Clear”, Afro-Rican “Give It All U Got”, Lil’ Louis “French Kiss”, and Planet Patrol’s “Play At Your Own Risk”, to name a few. Jon also teases that he and Usher have collaborated on a follow-up to “Yeah!”, which samples one of his picks for the show, Loose Joints’ “Is It All Over My Face”. Hablar de Waje es hablar de la propia historia del Electro en España y de su difusión. Sus inicios como Dj datan del año 88-89 en la sala Límite 69, aunque ya antes era un apasionado inusitado que recorría cada rincón de su Madrid natal en busca de los sonidos que por esa época se importaban de todo el mundo. Destacado rutero amante de los sonidos industriales y el EBM, Waje fue forjando su gusto y criterio en las pistas de baile más vanguardistas y repartiendo su conocimiento entre los colegas del barrio (como debe ser). Waje fue parte del primer equipo de residentes de Soma allá por el año 95, donde llevaba a cabo sesiones de puro Electro en una época en la que el Techno pegaba con toda su potencia. Tiempo después, en torno al 98, es cuando Waje junto con Dj Fake, crean el colectivo Robotique y aquí podemos decir que estamos ante la primera versión Electro de un Club. Tras este proyecto su siguiente paso fue montar el colectivo/promotora 8Z8, que durante los años 2005-2008 fue todo un referente en España y en Europa como Club de Electro. 8Z8 brindó a la ciudad de Madrid la posibilidad de disfrutar de infinidad de artistas internacionales, de esos que ahora consideramos básicos si queremos describir el género, y mostrando un apoyo total a la escena local de Madrid y a la nacional. Además de todo lo contado, Waje ha dedicado su vida a trabajar en tiendas de discos, distribuidoras y actualmente a colaborar en el sello, Industrias Mekanikas, propiedad de Rubén Montesco, con quien además hace tándem en la producción bajo el nombre de Anacronismo Industrial. Sin duda, Waje es todo un referente en la escena Underground y todo un conocedor de estilos como el Electro, EBM o la música Industrial y como no podía ser menos la sesión que nos ha regalado es una demostración de ello.
