In which The Curmudgeons give loud, deserved props to one of modern rock's most influential bands. Hûsker Dû started out as a revered hardcore punk band in Minneapolis in 1979, but by the mid-1980s, the band had veered toward a style that became known as punk-pop--loud and abrasive but also unquestionably melodic and heartfelt. During this episode, we extol the virtues of Hûsker Dû and what made them truly great. We discuss their six studio alums plus a rocked-out EP and a sensational live album. Enjoy the music of Hûsker Dû by accessing our special Spotify playlist: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/4z536uqdfmR7VVoAkZaCk8?si=a8db8b22da0d4a8e Here's a handy navigation companion to this episode: (00:52 - 04:12) - Arturo Andrade sets the parameters for our discussion of Hûsker Dû (06:17 - 16:49) - The Parallel Universe, featuring reviews of new music from Moonchild Sannelly and J.I.D. (17:47 - 50:49) - WE discuss Hûsker Dû's origin story and then analyze four full-length albums and one EP the band released on indie label SST. These include Zen Arcade, New Day Rising and Flip Your Wig. (52:41 - 01:09:04) - We discuss two albums Hûsker Dû relased on Warner Brothers Records and also a live album that hit record-store shelves long after the band broke up. Send us a Text Message.Remember the first time you heard "Can't Buy Me Love"? We kick off our latest episode of "Music In My Shoes" by celebrating the incredible reach of our podcast, now enjoyed in 35 countries and over 400 cities. We reminisce about the Beatles' "A Hard Day's Night," comparing its UK and US versions, and we share a quirky personal story about displaying the album cover in the bathroom. We also take a nostalgic look at the 1987 film "Can't Buy Me Love," starring Patrick Dempsey and Amanda Peterson, and its unique use of the iconic Beatles' track. But that's just the beginning. We explore an amusing high school transformation movie, with the Beatles' "Can't Buy Me Love" taking center stage, and we delve into the significance of other Beatles classics like "And I Love Her" and "I'm Happy Just to Dance With You." The episode takes a fun twist as we talk about George Strait breaking a concert attendance record and share a hilarious anecdote involving Flavor Flav and Martha Stewart at a Dead & Company show. We honor the late Bill Walton, the world's tallest deadhead, and his extraordinary connection to the Grateful Dead.As we wrap up the episode, we journey through music history, starting with a review of two recent Rolling Stones that I went to see. Yes Mick, Keith, and Ron can still rock it! We discuss Roger Daltrey's thoughts on the predictability of modern concerts and our own habits of checking setlists. We groove to Donna Summer's timeless hits, including "Hot Stuff" and "I Feel Love," and celebrate her influence in the late '70s and early '80s. Then, we dive into Hüsker Dü's unique sound, focusing on drummer Grant Hart and standout tracks from "Zen Arcade." To conclude, I encourage everyone to keep the music playing. Tune in for a trip down memory lane and some unforgettable musical moments! Please Like and Follow our Facebook page Music In My Shoes. You can contact us at musicinmyshoes@gmail.com.

RockerMike and Rob discuss Hüsker Dü. Hüsker Dü was an American punk rock band formed in Saint Paul, Minnesota, in 1979. The band's continual members were guitarist/vocalist Bob Mould, bassist/vocalist Greg Norton, and drummer/vocalist Grant Hart. They first gained notability as a hardcore punk band, and later crossed over into alternative rock. The band issued their debut full-length album Everything Falls Apart on Reflex Records in 1983 and subsequently released three LPs and an EP on the independent label SST Records, including the critically acclaimed Zen Arcade in 1984. Hüsker Dü signed to major label Warner Bros. Records in 1986 to release their final two studio albums. They disbanded in January 1988. Mould later released two solo albums before forming Sugar in the early 1990s, while Hart released a solo album on SST and later formed Nova Mob. After their respective bands broke up in the mid-1990s, Mould and Hart continued doing solo work, the latter until his death in 2017.[6] Norton was initially less active musically after Hüsker Dü and focused on being a restaurateur instead. He returned to the recording industry in 2006. https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-news/grant-hart-husker-du-drummer-and-singer-dead-at-56-196792/amp/ https://open.spotify.com/artist/16bN8mhtDFdegWbg0z3s10 https://www.amazon.com/Husker-Du-Noise-Pop-Pioneers-Launched/dp/0760335044 https://www.discogs.com/artist/129885-H%C3%BCsker-D%C3%BC https://www.npr.org/artists/548481460/husker-du Please follow us on Youtube,Facebook,Instagram,Twitter,Patreon and at www.gettinglumpedup.com https://linktr.ee/RobRossi Get your T-shirt at https://www.prowrestlingtees.com/gettinglumpedup And https://www.bonfire.com/store/getting-lumped-up/ https://app.hashtag.expert/?fpr=roberto-rossi80 https://dc2bfnt-peyeewd4slt50d2x1b.hop.clickbank.net https://8bcded2xph1jdsb8mqp8th3y0n.hop.clickbank.net/?cbpage=nb Subscribe to the channel and hit the like button --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/rob-rossi/support https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/getting-lumped-up-with-rob-rossi/id1448899708 https://open.spotify.com/show/00ZWLZaYqQlJji1QSoEz7a https://www.patreon.com/Gettinglumpedup #alternativerock #alternative #alternativemusic #musicproduction #music #musician #musicvideo #musicproducer --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/rob-rossi/support

Later than usual, but better than ever, this episode sees us descend into fits of laughter that we never truly recover from. From Marcus' quest for stardom (the rest is infamy) to the discovery of a mysterious individual known only as Don Plamm, (stopping at Jessica Simpson's cover of 'These Boots Are Made For Walking' and Bob Geldof's inadequate larynx on the way) episode 23 features more heavy breathing and screams of delight than a flasher's camera roll. We also discuss The Zen Arcade's FIRST encounter with a listener in the wild! Molly from Virginia, we need that photo, Spotify do your thing.
In case you missed it, last week we discussed the history of the double album. We spoke about how the double album was born, how it paved the way for more conceptual records, some of the big hitters, some of the worst ones, triple albums, quadruple albums…just any and all things related to the very concept of the double album. We also created three loose categories that we think all double albums fall into. If you missed it, you can find the episode here. This week, we've each picked what we think are excellent examples of the double album and decided to chat about why they're not just great records, but whey they're great double albums. As is usual for the format of our mixtape episodes, we've relaxed the rules a little on what constitutes as “unsung”. Chris went for perhaps one of the most well known, and well loved, double albums ever, in the form of The Smashing Pumpkins Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness. Weaver plumped for Don Juan's Reckless Daughter by Joni Mitchell, because we don't really think there's a way we can do Joni Mitchell on a regular show given how massive she is. And Mark went for the influential alt rock/emo classic Zen Arcade by Husker Du. Both three very different examples of the double album, we think. Some are conceptual. Some are just long ass albums. Whatever the case, we stand by our choices. But which do you think should be the first ever double album to go into our discography? Use the Twitter poll below to decide.
Rob caught up with Pete O'Hanlon from The Zen Arcade to talk about a wide range of topics - regrouping after the demise of The Strypes, punk sensibilities, setting up a 'zine and a podcast AND the terrible majesty that is Spider-Man 3. There is also a brief discussion about The Zen Arcade's music! The interview was recorded on 14th May 2021. An edited version was broadcast on Beat 102-103 on 16th May 2021 05 14
This week we are looking at Husker Du's 1984 album Zen Arcade and our guest will be Canadian indie-rock royalty Ian Blurton.

When this week’s guest, Ryan Smith (Ryan & Pony, The Melismatics, Soul Asylum) was growing up in Minneapolis/St Paul, Husker Du were considered royalty. With their 1984 double album “Zen Arcade”, they transcended their hardcore roots and created a stunning masterpiece that became his - and many others’ - “The Wall”...a stone cold classic!

On this week’s episode of The Hardcore Humanism Podcast, we had the pleasure of talking with musician and activist Bob Mould. Many people know Mould from his seminal work with Hüsker Dü, a band that came out of the hardcore punk scene and was incredibly influential on music in general, but particularly what later became “alternative rock.” Rolling Stonehas called Hüsker Dü’s album Zen Arcade one of the greatest punk rock albums of all time. Legend has it that Kim Deal joined alternative rock gods Pixies by responding to an ad in a Boston newspaper that said, “band seeks bassist into Hüsker Dü and Peter Paul and Mary.” And Dave Grohl perhaps put it best when he said, “No Hüsker Dü, no Foo Fighters.” Mould has also gone on to have a long solo career following Hüsker Dü, recently releasing a new album Blue Hearts (2020) as well as a 24 CD box set Distortion: 1989-2019 that documents his 30-year post-Hüsker Dü career, including his solo albums and work with the band Sugar. Mould’s enduring and influential career is not only impressive artistically, but it also puts him in a unique position to share a historical perspective. During our conversation, Mould talks about the lessons we can learn from his experience of the United States during the 1980’s as it applies to the current sociopolitical climate. Specifically, during the 1980’s the country faced HIV/AIDS, political tension centered around the Reagan administration and suppression of underground art - including those in the hardcore punk community - from being heard in mainstream culture. These parallel experiences put him in a unique position to comment on current events as we struggle with Covid-19, tensions regarding the Trump administration and difficulties of performance artists being able to ply their trade due to lockdown restrictions. Overall, what Mould discusses in our conversation is both the emotional experience of and coping with marginalization – or the treatment of a person, concept or group as though they were inconsequential. Mould shares his insights into how he coped with marginalization in the 80’s and how his experience can inform how we cope with present day stressors and marginalization. If you like what you hear, we would be so grateful if you'd give the podcast a rating and leave a review.

We start out comparing this record to Kid A, and then end up bashing Kid A for a bit. Why not? Jamie keeps trying to convince Mike that he knows about contemporary things. Mike has friends that have won Juno awards, so of course Jamie makes fun of this regional award he pisses all over the Grammys and they get into the argument over country size again. Other topics include: Swipes at Husker Du and Zen Arcade. Spinet pianos Tuning at full volume with a Marshall. Laika the Russian space dog Don't make friends with Chickens. Bob Mould speaks with Kyle Meredith about his politically-charged new album Blue Hearts. The former Hüsker Dü frontman discusses the diversity of the Minneapolis scene during his band’s early days, what it’s been like to watch his old town during the George Floyd era, and the differences between '80s politics and today. He also reminisces on his then-struggles as a gay man and how they informed the band's iconic Zen Arcade. Mould then goes on to to talk about the upcoming presidential election, how helping trans people is the current focus in the LGBTQ+ community, and how his new song “Forecast of Rain” reflects on his religious upbringing. SAN ONOFRE-religión y dinero ¿Te acuerdas de Hüsker Dü? aaajaoajaoajOjOAJAOj, ¡qué ingenioso juego de palabras! Bible and a Gun, cantaba, ufano, Jason Ringenberg.
“The sweat pouring off of fat Bob Mould’s body, as he played enough guitar for two people on his Flying V, was one of Indie’s most romantic sights; every time a drop hit Earth, some band like Superchunk or Soul Asylum sprang into existence.” No truer words were ever spoken about Mould and his legendary Minneapolis trio. This episode we get into their massive influence, impeccable legacy and pit their two most classic LPs against each other. This week we discuss Hüsker Dü from Minneapolis, MN. Yet another band who influenced countless other, more successful bands. Hüsker Dü’s evolution is profound—they started as lightning-speed hardcore punk, ventured into noisy psychedelia, then finally settled on poppy indie rock. Festivities aplenty and a floor full of cracked crackers. We listen to our audiences Sonic Seconds, some are clued in, others are terminally clued out. If you listen closely you can hear the faint jingle of sleigh bells in every jingle.
This third Tuesday shows Zen Arcade are a band of their word. Still no music, videos or shows yet but thank god the peripheral extra curriculars are being prioritised.Dave Clarke is likened to a floating intergalactic planet eater (not for the first time), Baloo is accused of racism (not for the first time), Ev brings up Roy Wood (not for the first time) and the market potential of Avril Lavigne's name in the meat extract paste industry is realised (very much for the first time).
Zen Arcade put their best mic forward and extol the virtues of The Hollies (taking extra care to de-extoll the virtues of Graham Nash for obvious reasons). Once our relentless admiration is established we move on to other sections of the show, 'Guilty Hatreds' where we discuss bands we feel bad about not liking (here's looking at you 'Zep), and 'Never Mind The Fuzzbox' a re-imagining of the Intros Round from Never Mind the Buzzcocks except now with the exceptionally original twist of a fuzzbox thrown in to confuse matters. We finish up with 'Ross Farrelly's Acoustic Corner' (which makes it a variety show, ideal for tax purposes) and 'Have I Got Tunes For You', where, from our ivory tower records, we tell you what albums you should listen to because you're not listening to the right ones.

On TalkCentral this week, Duncan McLeod and Regardt van der Berg chat about Apple's new iPad Pro models, the new MacBook Air and the new Mac mini. The conversation turns to Apple's pricing strategy, and they ask: is Apple at risk of pricing itself out of the market? Also this week, Naspers's plan to invest R1.4-billion in South African technology start-ups, Black Friday (should we care?) and researchers have found a new way to store data - using powder! Listen to the show to find out who's been picked as winner and loser of the week. Regardt's pick this week is MSI's GF63 laptop, while Duncan has two picks: Huawei's new Mate 20 Pro smartphone and the game Train Valley (it's addictive). This week's song pick is Zen Arcade's Crazy Over You. Remember, you can WhatsApp the show on 0719991111. Voice notes might be included in a future episode. Podcast website
A good mix of SA and local tunes – The Narrow, Seether, Royal Blood, Ree-Burth, 12th Avenue, Zen Arcade, Zengeance, Voodoo Child, Nick-I, Lost&Found, Navaho and ShoutSA.
The antagonistically long, spastically eclectic Zen Arcade is about growing out of where you’re from and into a form you don’t yet fit. For better or worse, it’s as punk as punk gets.Join the fun as two grown-up punks reckon with the good, the bad, and the WTF of a hardcore staple they’d missed until long after their best pitting years.

In our second episode we approach the last of the great 80s indie double albums, Sonic Youth's "Daydream Nation", in the trilogy of Hüsker Dü's "Zen Arcade" and The Minutemen's "Double Nickels On The Dime". In part one of this week's double drop, Ryan and Brant get a little help from Paul Hilcoff, who runs the insanely cool Hüsker Dü Database. Follow the link to Paul's amazing website below. YOU DON’T KNOW MOJACK is a podcast dedicated to exploring the entire SST catalogue, in order, from start to finish. During the podcast we will discuss all the releases that are part of our core DNA, as well as many lesser-known releases that deserve a second chance, or releases that we are discovering for the very first time (we actually don’t know Mojack!). First and foremost we are fans, and acknowledge that we are not perfect and don’t know everything – sometimes the discussion is more about a time, place, feeling, personal experience or random tangents, and less about the facts (but we will try to get to the facts too). The tension between Husker Du members Bob Mould, Grant Hart, and Greg Norton is beginning to show in the fourth of five episodes dedicated to the band's history -- but the music is too great to deny. This episode covers the SST years, in which the Huskers released a string of masterpieces, including the 1984 double album Zen Arcade.

Remember that shitty song Everything Zen by Bush? Awful awful song. Well this album isn’t that. It’s like the opposite of Bush. Zen Arcade (the seminal 1984 record by Hüsker Dü) landed in our laps this week, and let’s just say it definitely wasn’t what we expected it to be. I (and the rest of those people that talk into mics on this show) had previously only been familiar with Bob Mould’s post Hüsker Dü output, and that was a world away from THIS weird-ass hardcore punk concept record. Spirited discussion of it ensued. Hey, remember that time last week where I said I made everybody listened to Heart’s All I Wanna Do Is Make Love to You? Oh yeah, that was actually this episode…OOOPS. Next time on “Somebody Likes It”… I can’t make the show, and the discussion was finally about an album I liked: Tahiti 80’s light as air, sugary French Pop confection from 2000 Puzzle. So tune in, I certainly will, if for no other reason than to see if they talked shit about me. Bon Nuit, Shane You catch that? I slipped a little France-y talk in at the end there. Sometimes being me is a heavy burden.
late night conversation via text: Ryan: What is this week’s album again? Shane: Sylvan Esso Ryan: I have no idea what that means Shane: It’s a band/album…you sound like somebody’s old uncle Ryan: What does that even mean? This week we listen to the album Sylvan Esso by the band “Sylvan Esso”…well, not exactly a band, but it is two people making music, so not exactly a solo act. I guess I could have said “duo”, but somehow that just doesn’t feel right. We all agree that singer Amelia Meath has a honeyed voice that makes one weak in the knees…but that’s pretty much all we agreed on. Next time around? We yell about Zen Arcade by Hüsker Dü and I might throw in All I Wanna Do Is Make Love To You by Heart during the intermission…tune in to see if I actually do that (Spoiler Alert! I do that). Till then,
This week, Patrick brings us a cörnerstone of Hardcöre müsic in Hüsker Dü and their 1984 release Zen Arcade. Did the güys feel the pöwer of the ümlauts? Hit play and find oüt.
