This week's guest slate is presented by Sean O'Neil, a best-selling author and award-winning screen writer, with several successful titles under his belt, including, The Plague, his most successful book, and Jhill, which won an International Impact Book Award in July.
NASA's Perseverance Rover has found a fascinating rock on Mars that may indicate it hosted microbial life billions of years ago. Abigail Allwood, exobiologist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab, is on the team scrutinising the new Martian data. And a couple of newly discovered, approximately 500 year old fossils from the ‘Cambrian explosion' of complexity caught presenter Roland Pease's eye this week. First Martin Smith from Durham University tells us about a tiny grub that's ancestor to worms, insects, spiders and crustaceans. Then Ma Xiaoya, who has positions at both Yunnan University in China and Exeter University in the UK, tells us about a spiny slug that was also discovered in a famous fossil site in China. And the first sightings of the landscapes on the underside of the ice shelves that fringe Antarctica. These float atop the ocean around the frozen continent but effectively hold back the glaciers and ice sheets on the vast landmass. Their physical condition therefore is pretty critical in this warming world, Anna Wohlin of Gothenburg University tells us. 00:45 Increasing the energy efficiency of light-based computersComputer components based on specialised LEDs could reduce the energy consumption of power hungry AI systems, according to new research. AI chips with components that compute using light can run more efficiently than those using digital electronics, but these light-based systems typically use lasers that can be bulky and difficult to control. To overcome these obstacles, a team has developed a way to replace these lasers with LEDs, which are cheaper and more efficient to run. Although only a proof of concept, they demonstrate that their system can perform some tasks as well as laser-based computers.Research Article: Dong et al.News and Views: Cheap light sources could make AI more energy efficient10:36 Research HighlightsThe genes that make roses smell so sweet, and how blocking inflammation could reduce heart injury after a stroke.Research Highlight: How the rose got its iconic fragranceResearch Highlight: Strokes can damage the heart — but reining in the immune system might help13:02 What researchers know about H5N1 influenza in cowsThe highly-pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 was first identified in US cattle in March 2024 and has been detected in multiple herds across the country. Embark on a celestial journey with today's episode of Astronomy Daily - The Podcast, where your host, Anna, brings you the latest cosmic updates. We'll delve into NASA's latest asteroid impact exercise, groundbreaking research on Martian water detection, DARPA's new quantum laser project, intriguing air samples gathered by Perseverance, and celebrate the Hubble Space Telescope's 21st anniversary with stunning images. Plus, we'll look at recent research focusing on heart failure in space. Let's dive right in.NASA recently released a summary of the fifth biennial planetary defense interagency tabletop exercise, aimed at exploring our preparedness for potential asteroid threats. Organized by NASA's Planetary Defense Coordination Office in partnership with FEMA and the US Department of State Office of Space Affairs, this exercise aimed to assess and enhance our national response capabilities. Despite having no significant asteroid impact threats on the horizon, these hypothetical exercises are invaluable, providing insights into potential risks and response strategies for varying scenarios. This year's exercise involved a newly identified asteroid with a 72% chance of hitting Earth in 14 years. Nearly 100 representatives from US government agencies and international collaborators convened at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory in Maryland for the exercise. The next steps include publishing a complete after-action report detailing the identified strengths and gaps and offering recommendations for improvement. In an exciting development, researchers believe that marsquakes could offer a new method for detecting liquid water deep underground on Mars. This intriguing possibility lies in the unique electromagnetic signals these quakes produce as they traverse Mars' subsurface. Traditional methods, such as ground-penetrating radar used on Earth, aren't effective at the depths where water might exist on Mars. But marsquakes could change that. Researchers at Penn State have modeled the Martian subsurface, incorporating potential aquifers to test the seismoelectric method. Their results are promising. By identifying these unique seismic signals, they could map hidden aquifers, providing critical insights into the presence and properties of water on Mars today.Next, we dive into an exciting breakthrough in laser technology. Funded by DARPA, the US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, they're investing in a game-changing project to develop a quantum laser that uses entangled photons, promising better precision over long distances and in adverse conditions. Traditional lasers are remarkable tools already crucial in various domains, but they are not without limitations. This is where the new quantum laser comes in, utilizing quantum entanglement to pair photons together, creating photonic dimers. This means that applications such as military surveillance, secure communications, and high-precision mapping could see significant performance improvements.Scientists are eagerly anticipating the return of air samples collected by NASA's Perseverance Mars rover. These samples, gathered in titanium tubes alongside rock and regolith, are providing a golden opportunity to delve deeper into the Martian atmosphere and its composition as part of the Mars Sample Return campaign. These 24 samples will be analyzed to uncover secrets about the planet's atmospheric history and to determine the presence of trace gases that may have been consistent since Mars' ancient past. Understanding this interaction is pivotal, as it could reveal how much water vapor resides near the Martian surface. Such knowledge can illuminate the mysterious ways in which Mars' water cycle has evolved over time.To celebrate the Hubble Space Telescope's 21st anniversary, astronomers pointed Hubble's eye at a striking cosmic duo. Known as Arp 273, this pair of interacting galaxies presents a breathtaking sight. The larger galaxy, UGC 1810, has a disk that has been twisted into a rose-like shape. This stunning distortion is caused by the gravitational tidal forces exerted by its companion, UGC 1813. The image, a composite of observations from Hubble's Wide Field Camera 3, reveals the intricate beauty and complex dance of these celestial bodies, showcasing the achievements of Hubble and its ongoing contributions to our understanding of the universe. As commercial space travel becomes more accessible, researchers are delving into how spaceflight impacts individuals with underlying health conditions, especially heart failure. Recent studies have focused on developing computational models to predict how microgravity affects these individuals. Heart failure affects over 100 million people globally and is generally categorized into two types. Both types present unique challenges in a microgravity environment, underscoring the need for carefully tailored measures to protect the health of space tourists. Researchers have used advanced computational models to simulate these conditions and predict outcomes with a high degree of accuracy. These models allow scientists to anticipate the specific cardiovascular challenges faced by heart failure patients in space. That wraps up today's episode of Astronomy Daily. The Perseverance Mars rover packs a laser gun. It’s not for defense against Martians. Instead, it’s a scientific instrument — a way to learn about Martian rocks without drilling into them. And the sound of the laser helps in that effort. Perseverance zaps a target rock dozens of times in just a few seconds. That vaporizes some of the rock. The rover’s instruments analyze the composition of the vapor. That reveals the chemistry of the rock. Scientists use that information to infer something about how the rocks formed, and about the conditions on Mars when they formed. A microphone on the rover records the sounds of the laser impact on the rocks. And the sound is different for different types of rocks. Scientists have used that difference to estimate the hardness of the rocks. And they combine the sounds with their analysis of the gas from the laser shots to measure the mineral composition of the rocks. So the eyes — and ears — of Perseverance are telling us a lot about the history of the rover’s location on Mars. Look for Mars in the dawn sky. It looks like a fairly bright orange star, low in the east at first light. Tomorrow, the planet will stand close to the upper right of the Moon. Mars will climb a little higher into the morning sky as spring ends and we head into summer. We’ll have more about Mars tomorrow. Script by Damond Benningfield

In order for NASA to do cool science, they need the help of cool scientists! The Perseverance rover, part of NASA's Mars 2020 mission, is currently in the midst of operations on the red planet, driving through an ancient river setting and collecting samples. But what is it looking for? What will it do next? These questions are part of the day-to-day operations carried out by Mars 2020 science team members like Dr. Andy Czaja and Andrea Corpolongo, who have joined Tim and Andrew to tell us Earthlings exactly what it's like to live on Martian time! The landing site of the Perseverance Mars rover could have been quite comfortable about three-and-a-half billion years ago. The rover discovered organic compounds — the chemical building blocks of life — in sediments in an ancient riverbed. The rock layers where the compounds were found suggest the environment would have been favorable for life. Jezero Crater is 28 miles across. And in the distant past, it was filled with water. Scientists had expected it to be paved with layers of sediment, which form as rocks and grit in the water settle to the bottom and cement together. Instead, the rover's instruments have found that most of the rock on the crater floor was formed by volcanic processes. Sedimentary rocks do form the river delta, which was deposited when Mars was warmer and wetter than it is today. Analysis of rocks at a formation named Wildcat Ridge revealed the organic compounds. Perseverance will spend many months examining the delta. And it's storing samples of the sediments for return to Earth, where scientists can check more thoroughly for evidence of ancient life. Mars is a stunner right now. It's passing especially close to Earth, so it outshines everything that's currently in the night sky except the Moon and the planet Jupiter. It looks like a brilliant orange star. It's low in the east-northeast as the sky gets fully dark, and climbs high across the sky later on. More about Mars tomorrow. It's time for another Ask Me Anything episode. In today's show, Ken and Dawn tackle a wide range of listener questions about: -- Protein intake on a ketogenic diet. -- A new study on the efficacy and safety of MDMA-assisted therapy. -- The Pentagon's new report about UFOs. -- Virta Health's two-year pilot study that demonstrated people diagnosed with prediabetes had normalized their glucose through carbohydrate restriction. -- The FDA's controversial approval of the Biogen Alzheimer's disease drug Aduhelm. -- The deepest man-made pool and diving research facility that just opened in Dubai. -- Strategies to deal with the so-called “keto flu.” -- And a lot more. Enjoy. 00:02:49 A listener asks Ken about protein intake on a ketogenic diet. The listener says they have heard some experts say that protein intake should be fairly low on a ketogenic diet while other experts suggest protein needs might actually be higher than what is generally recommended. The listener, who is physically active and on a ketogenic diet but isn't seeing much muscle growth, asks Ken what the research says about what proper levels of protein on a ketogenic diet. 00:05:05 A listener asks Ken about STEM-Talk's interview with Gordon Lithgow, episode 120 of STEM-Talk, mentioning that Ken and Gordon referenced arginine AKG, a supplement often used by athletes and bodybuilders to improve their performance and reduce muscle fatigue. The listener asks if arginine AKG, or calcium AKG, or something else can help them recover from exercise as they get older. In his response, Ken discusses a 2017 meta-analysis by Robert Wolfe. Ken also mentions two essential amino acid blends, MAP Master Amino Acid Pattern. The other blend is called Mass Pro Synthagen. 00:12:09 A listener mentions in their question that there is a new study that just came out in Nature Medicine looking at the efficacy and safety of MDMA-assisted therapy for people diagnosed with severe PTSD. Nearly 70 percent of the participants who received MDMA therapy no longer qualified for a diagnosis of PTSD after two months of treatment. The listener asks Ken and Dawn if they have read this study and what their thoughts are. Ken in his response mentions two STEM-Talk episodes that touched on MDMA-assisted therapy, David Rabin in Episode 99 and Rachel Yehuda in episode 101. 00:14:37]A listener asks Ken what the justification for spending almost $3 billion on the Perseverance Mars mission is, going on to ask with all the needs here on Earth, how does NASA and Congress justify the billions that will be needed for a manned mission to Mars. 00:19:06 A listener asks how Dawn's research on glymphatic function in extreme environments is going. 00:22:31 A listener asks Kens for his thoughts on the recent media coverage of the Pentagon's new report on more 100 UFOs, or “unidentified aerial phenomena,” that the Pentagon cannot explain. 00:25:49 A listener mentions that Virta Health is wrapping up its data collection of a five-year trial that looks at nutritional ketosis as a treatment for type-2 diabetes and prediabetes. Virta recently published the results of its two-year pilot study that demonstrated people diagnosed with prediabetes had normalized their glucose in the blood through carbohydrate restriction. The listener asks Ken to comment on this two-year pilot study since Ken is affiliated with Virta. In his response, Ken mentions Amy McKenzie's 2021 paper. 00:27:17 A listener asks Ken about the controversial FDA approval of the Biogen Alzheimer's disease drug Aduhelm. Despite murky clinical trial results, the drug was fast-tracked, even though it will cost a person $56,000 annually. 00:30:57 A listener asks Dawn, given her diving background, about the deepest man-made pool and diving research facility that just opened in Dubai. 00:33:44 A listener asks Ken about a study that ran in JAMA that found that fasting for 12 hours or more led to minimal weight loss and significant ...

A note from Talking Taiwan host Felicia Lin: Dr. Jeng Yen is a NASA scientist and the “driver” of the Perseverance Mars rover. I initially interviewed Dr. Yen on April 9th. We spoke about how he was first inspired to join NASA by the first Mars rover Sojourner, what’s been discovered about Mars since then, the work of Mars rover Perseverance and the Mars helicopter Ingenuity which is poised to be the first aircraft to fly on Mars. I spoke with Dr. Yen again this past Friday, April 16th and he gave me an important update on the Mars helicopter Ingenuity which has had to delay the date of its first flight on Mars. We are excited to learn that on Monday April 19th Ingenuity has indeed made history as the first aircraft humans have flown on another planet- Mars! You can watch the first flight of the Ingenuity Mars helicopter live from mission control here on YouTube: https://youtu.be/p1KolyCqICI I’m so pleased to be sharing my full interview with Dr. Yen on this momentous day. Here’s a little preview of what we talked about in this podcast episode: How Dr. Yen’s interest in working for NASA was inspired by the first rover on Mars the Sojourner in 1997 How Dr. Yen’s previous work in Minnesota on army high performance computing involved vehicle design What it’s like to live and work in Mars time The Mars helicopter Ingenuity The four Mars exploration missions that Dr. Yen has been on and what each accomplished Mars exploration rovers Spirit and Opportunity’s discovery that there was past surface water on Mars Mars rover Curiosity and where it is in relation to the Perseverance rover What the interface used to drive the rover is like The Phoenix lander mission The InSight mission which is still running and learning about the core of Mars What happens if a part of the Perseverance rover breaks What happened when the Curiosity rover dropped its drill How long Perseverance will be on Mars The power that Perseverance runs on that allows it to last for years What is involved in landing a rover How video footage of Perseverance’s landing was captured How the Mars helicopter Ingenuity communicates with the Perseverance rover China’s plans to land a rover on Mars How Perseverance will be taking samples from Mars to see if there is any evidence of life on Mars and how these samples will be found and retrieved by a future rover If Elon Musk’s SpaceX could be the first to land humans on Mars Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin Will it be possible to colonize Mars in the next 30 years Which planet surface will NASA explore next The Europa clipper Why NASA uses the discovery of water as a standard to explore for life The Phoenix lander mission Where the name “Perseverance” for the current Mars rover came from Who names the Mars rovers The quest to answer the question are we alone in this universe STEM (Science Technology Engineering Mathematics) education How Dr. Yen founded the San Marino High School FRC (First Robotics Competition) Dr. Yen’s advice for people interested in working in the field of space exploration or aeronautics Related Links: About Dr Jeng Yen: https://www-robotics.jpl.nasa.gov/people/Jeng_Yen/personFull.cfm NASA Website: https://www.nasa.gov/ NASA YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCLA_DiR1FfKNvjuUpBHmylQ NASA on Twitter: https://twitter.com/NASA NASA on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/NASA NASA on Twitch: https://www.twitch.tv/nasa Watch NASA’s Perseverance Rover Land on Mars! In this episode Aidan and James discuss the possibility of life in our Universe. With the successful launch and landing of the Perseverance Rover on the surface of Mars in February 2021 we thought it timely to discuss the what the mission's aim is and the possibility of finding the existence of Martians. The future of space exploration is also discussed given that the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), which set to launch in October 2021, will enable us to look further in both space and time to study whether there are other planets in our Universe that could host humans or life of their own. Our Giant of the Week is Katherine Johnson, the African-American mathematician that was largely responsible (along with many other Black, Female Mathematicians) for putting the first NASA astronaut into Space (Alan Shephard) and the Apollo 11 mission to land Humans on the Moon. Radicalism, Technology, and Social Justice (00:00) Intro & T-shirts. Frequent guest Joe Occhipinti joins The Radical Secular team in his debut as host, with a wide-ranging discussion of the linkage between ancient and modern technological development and its impacts on social justice. (04:14) The news: Ted Cruz, The Great Texas Blackout, the Polar Vortex, Rush Limbaugh dies, Covid update and vaccinations, the Perseverance Mars landing, (30:11) Joe Occhipinti on why he joined The Radical Secular team. (36:07) Systems thinking and feedback. (39:22) How the outsider perspective can help Americans. White supremacy as a white person's struggle. Opposition to social justice is really resistance to progress overall. (51:00) Technology is really all about increasing collaboration. Update on "The Singularity is Near." Tool-use and brain growth. Homo habilis. Technology is what's changing the world, yet people are still blaming scapegoats. Politicians are monkey-wrenching systems. Resilience is everything. (01:06:44) Disruptive change is by no means new or unique to our time. What's unique now is the blinding speed of the double exponential. Technology as an amplifier to existing power structures. Technology can sometimes plant the seeds that will undermine future developments. (01:16:03) The fourth wave of Capitalism. Can be good as well as bad surprises. Using technology to manage technology. Neuralink and cybernetic systems. Hysteresis is a magnetic phenomenon involving delay or resistance to change, but applies to politics and technology as well. Crashing our system to stop progress won't stop progress. It just cedes the race to others, like China. If we're not careful, it will crash America, and relegate the US to developing nation status. Downward mobility.
