Learn more about your ad choices. Was there ever life on Mars? When will we land a human on the Red Planet? What does it take to send a rover to Mars to explore these possibilities?Bekah Sosland Siegfriedt is Nasa's Systems Engineer and Missions Operation Engineer who worked five years to help land and now monitor the well-being of the Mars rover Perseverance—affectionately called Percy.“Once a rover lands on Mars, she has her own life. There's energy pulsing through her veins and she needs to be given love. She becomes a family member.”As Bekah shares about Percy's well-being—“we try to keep her as safe as possible. Her mission is to search for signs of ancient microbial life and pave the way for human exploration. But sometimes she has a mind of her own.”Steve Sosland, Bekah's dad & Vice Chancellor of Culture Development at TTHSC, joined our conversation sharing that early in her childhood, he and his wife Kelly recognized their daughter's fascination with space. Together they encouraged her to pursue her ambition of becoming an aeronautical engineer. Now look where she is!Not only is Bekah a successful aeronautical engineer, but she also successfully worked on the movie Goodnight Oppy—Perseverance's predecessor named Opportunity. Oppy was expected to roam Mars' dusty plains for 90 days. She obviously was an overachieving rover who kept working for 15 years.Goodnight Oppy is available on Amazon Prime:bit.ly/GoodnightOppyThis episode is ‘out of this world' – no pun intended.

The Recap - Wrapping up the Week and Looking Ahead at ACEC

Engineering Influence from ACEC

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 15, 2022 7:11

Well, the weather is starting to heat up here in Washington DC , and so is our activity at ACEC. And we wanted to give you a wrap up of what we've been working on this week and look ahead to what to expect from ACEC in the coming weeks. Now first, I want to lead off with the fact that the 2022 professional liability insurance survey of member firms is now underway and invitation links to take the survey have been sent to the primary contacts of our firm members. And the survey is only requesting the responses from AE member firms of ACEC. Only one set of responses per firm is required. If you have any questions, reach out to Charles Kim. Earlier this week, we published two updates. First being the YouTube update that Erin McLaughlin, our Vice President of private market resources does every month in 10 minutes or less giving you all the top trends and information you need on what's happening in the economy and how it impacts your business. That's available on our YouTube channel. And it's going to be linked to the show notes on this episode. Really encourage you to take a look, like and subscribe to the channel, because we do this on a monthly basis. And we also follow up with an even shorter summary on our podcast that was published a little bit earlier this week, looking at top four things you need to know about the economy and the AE industry. And of course now with inflation and CPI at record highs, it's really a good time to get your handle on everything that's happening and impacting our industry. Now, following on the theme of private markets, time is running out for you to register for our April 28th Private Market Symposium on the healthcare, science+technology market, taking place in Boston, Massachusetts. Now this is a great event that brings together engineers and practitioners within this market space to talk about the evolution of the market and ways that engineering firms could take advantage of it. And we know from the research we've done from the ACEC Research Institute that healthcare facilities, biotech, science, and technology, those are all market sectors where our industry fuels bullish now and into the next 12 months. So this is a great opportunity, not only to hear from experts, but also to share information, meet network with your peers. Space is limited and we're running out. So take the opportunity right now if you're in the Boston area or on the 95 corridor. Make sure to get your space for the upcoming private market symposium in healthcare and the science+technology market happening on April 28th in Boston. If you go up to the private market resources page on our website, we have a full rundown of speakers and the agenda. It's gonna be an event you don't want to miss. Now we're also counting down the days until we hit the early bird deadline for the 2022 annual Convention and Legislative Summit happening in person between May 22nd and 25th back downtown DC at the Grand Hyatt. Now this is going to be a great event and it's gonna be a combination of three days of networking, round tables, speakers, and of course advocacy. This is our premier advocacy event for the year. Now there's no better time to have your voice heard in Washington. I mean, right now we are in the implementation phase of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. No one knows the importance of getting this right like our member firm leaders. And we always talk about the speakers that we have and speakers are always a highlight of our events. And this year is no exception. We are very pleased to be welcoming Margaret Brennan - she's the moderator of, CBS' Face the Nation and their Chief Foreign Correspondent. And there's enough to talk about right there. We are also gonna be joined by Scott Harrison. He's gonna be kicking off the event. He's the founder and CEO of Charity: Water, and we are also gonna be welcoming Nicole Malachowski. She is the first female Thunderbird pilot. She's a combat veteran fighter squadron commander, also a white house fellow and advisor gonna be a great talk there. And then Adam Steltzner, he's the leader and chief engineer at NASA for their Mars 2020 mission and the Rover Perseverance. Just a great lineup of speakers to give a little bit extra flare to the event. Again, April 21st is the end of the early bird period. Make sure you go up to acec.org and secure your spot not only for the event, but then also for the Engineering Excellence Awards that are happening again in person. Gonna be great to have this event back in person. We've done the last two virtually, and it's gonna be us just wonderful to get everybody back together. But the premier celebration of engineering excellence is happening right at the end of the conference. So make sure that you not only get your spot for the event, but then also for the EEA awards, you don't wanna miss that. In addition to all of those things happening, we also have some great courses and webinars you don't wanna miss and something that's very timely happening on April 18th, "Electric Vehicle Charging Networks: Implications for Transportation Planning of the Energy Grid." And we all know bipartisan infrastructure. Bill has a lot of EV funding and that national EV network infrastructure. So this is gonna be a great webinar to learn more about that. And then rounding out next week. Friday is Earth Day, April 22nd, and we're gonna be spending the week focusing in on how our member firms design a better world. And we're gonna be using that as our hashtag throughout the week on social media. And we're looking for examples. If you are a firm that deals in environmental work and you want a spotlight, a project that you're very proud of, that shows how we are as an industry, improving the world around us, by cleaning the air, cleaning the water, making things more resilient against climate threats or sustainable. Please let us know, put it up on social, use the #DesignABetterWorld. We'll see it, and we'll retweet it. We're gonna be reposting. A lot of podcasts we've done on environmental issues, posting videos up. And we also have a new book in the ACEC bookstore, "Climate Change and the Built Environment." And this is a compendium is, is really a great resource. And I encourage you to take a look at it. There are 11 chapters plus case studies written by engineers, understanding taking the concept of climate change and the threat that it presents and actually putting actionable steps and how engineering firms can work on these issues. It's a really good book. Encourage everyone to take a look will be running podcasts with some of the contributors to the book and it's up there on the ACEC bookstore. So that's your wrap up for this week and a look ahead at the week to come from ACEC. We'll see you next time.

Earlier this year, on February 18, 2021, the next-generation Mars Rover, Perseverance, successfully landed on Mars. According to Earth and Sky Magazine, Perseverance was the first artificial object to land on Mars since 2018, and the first Rover to land since 2012 when Curiosity touched down.  Perseverance traveled 293 million miles (472 million km) – over 203 days, and hit the Martian atmosphere traveling at almost 12,000 miles per hour (19,000 kmh), About a mile above Mars surface, the descent module fired its engines, while a terrain relative navigation system scanned and analyzed the terrain below, then matched it up with maps in its database to prepare for touchdown.  All this requires some sophisticated and rugged microelectronics and semiconductor technology. So, what makes this even more exciting for us at 3D InCites, is that 3D PLUS, winner of the 2021 Device of the Year Award, and Community Member, StratEdge Corporation, both provided the advanced packaging technology to make this possible. In this episode, we talk to Patrice Benard, of 3D Plus, and Casey Krawiec, of StratEdge Corporation to learn about the experience of working on this exciting project. Stratedge Corporation specializes in high frequency, high power, high-reliability semiconductor packages.

Also schnallt euch an!

Link: https://discord.gg/ZzJSrGP SpaceX wants to build an offshore spaceport near Texas for Starship Mars rocket Link: https://www.space.com/spacex-mars-starship-offshore-launch-landing.html SpaceX's Mars-colonizing missions may not launch from terra firma. Elon Musk's space company is hiring "offshore operations engineers" to help develop floating spaceports for Starship, its next-gen transportation system designed to take people to and from the moon, Mars and anywhere on Earth they want to go. "SpaceX is building floating, superheavy-class spaceports for Mars, moon & hypersonic travel around Earth," Musk said via Twitter Tuesday (June 16), in response to a tweet that drew attention to the SpaceX hiring notice. Musk also revealed some new details about the plan Tuesday. For example, a Twitter user asked if the offshore spaceports will be refurbished oil rigs, and if Starship passengers will be ferried out to them via Hyperloop, the vacuum-pod transportation idea that Musk proposed in 2012. The billionaire entrepreneur responded, "Pretty much." Musk also said that the offshore spaceports won't exactly hug the coastline. "We need to be far enough away so as not to bother heavily populated areas. The launch & landing are not subtle. But you could get within a few miles of the spaceport in a boat," he said in another Tuesday tweet. The landing he referenced is that of Super Heavy, the 31-engine first stage required to get the 100-passenger Starship off Earth's surface. Super Heavy will come back down to Earth for a vertical touchdown shortly after liftoff, the way first-stage boosters of SpaceX's Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy rockets do now. To date, just one Starship prototype has gotten off the ground: a stubby, single-engine craft called Starhopper, which made a few short test flights last year before being retired. But SpaceX is gearing up for an uncrewed test flight that will take the SN5 ("Serial No. 5") prototype about 500 feet (150 meters) into the South Texas skies, if all goes according to plan. SPACEX INTERNET SERVICE STARLINK ASKS FOR PEOPLE TO TRY IT OUT Link: https://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/gadgets-and-tech/news/spacex-starlink-beta-users-public-how-to-wifi-register-a9570596.html SpaceX has announced that it is looking for beta testers for its Starlink low-earth orbit internet service. There are currently 540 Starlink satellites in orbit. Eventually, they will form part of a 12,000-strong constellation to beam internet connectivity back to the planet. Users visiting the Starlink website will now find that it invites them to “Get updates on Starlink news and service availability in your area” and input their email and area code. When they do, they will receive an email stating: "Starlink is designed to deliver high-speed broadband internet to locations where access has been unreliable, expensive, or completely unavailable. Private beta testing is expected to begin later this summer, followed by public beta testing, starting with higher latitudes." "If you provided us with your zip code, you will be notified via email if beta testing opportunities become available in your area. In the meantime, we will continue to share with you updates about general service availability and upcoming Starlink launches." Elon Musk has previously described the device as a “UFO on a stick”. Perseverance: NASA's Mars 2020 rover Link: https://www.space.com/perseverance-mars-2020-rover.html NASA's next Mars rover won't just explore the Red Planet; it will, the space agency hopes, help a little bit of Mars make it to Earth a decade or so from now. Known as Perseverance, the upcoming rover will hunt for signs of habitable environments on Mars while searching for signs of past microbial life. The robotic traveler will also cache a series of samples that can be returned to Earth with a future mission. Perseverance is the centerpiece of NASA's Mars 2020 mission, which is currently slated to blast off from Cape Canaveral, Florida, in July or August 2020, when Earth and Mars are positioned to require the least amount of power for interplanetary travel. It is scheduled to land on Feb. 18, 2021, with an initial mission duration of at least one Martian year, or 687 Earth-days. The car-sized rover is about 10 feet long (not including the arm), 9 feet wide, and 7 feet tall (about 3 meters long, 2.7 meters wide, and 2.2 meters tall). At 2,314 lbs. (1,050 kilograms), Perseverance weighs less than a compact car. If photos and sketches of the Perseverance rover look familiar, that's because the robotic explorer is largely based off its predecessor, the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) Curiosity rover (November 26, 2011, 9:02 AM CST). Roughly 85% of the new rover's mass is based on this "heritage hardware." "The fact that so much of the hardware has already been designed — or even already exists — is a major advantage for this mission," Jim Watzin, director of NASA's Mars Exploration Program, said in a statement. "It saves us money, time and most of all, reduces risk." Perseverance will seek out biosignatures from the past on a microbial scale. A ground-penetrating radar will be the first rover instrument to look under the surface of Mars, mapping layers of rock, water and ice up to 30 feet (10 m) deep. Mars 2020 launch slips three days. A launch vehicle processing "hiccup" has pushed back next month's launch of NASA's Mars 2020 rover mission by three days. NASA Associate Administrator Steve Jurczyk revealed the delay in a presentation to a joint meeting of the National Academies' Aeronautics and Space Engineering Board and Space Studies Board June 9, SpaceNews reports. A crane pain ... Tory Bruno, ULA president and chief executive, said on Twitter that a problem with a crane used as part of launch vehicle processing caused the delay, an issue that has since been corrected. The delay pushed back the launch of Mars 2020 to July 20, with a two-hour window opening at 9:15am ET from Cape Canaveral, Florida.
