In episode 114 astrologers Kristina Martin and Tara Redfield take a look post-Oscars at Best Supporting Actress winner Zoe Saldaña and her artist/producer husband, Marcos Perego-Saldaña. Yes, he took HER last name! The two have been married for 12 years and have three sons. First, we interpret Zoe's chart and see a dramatic and captivating "Lioness" thanks to her bold Leo rising! Adding her Venus in Leo, we see that a life of glamour, attention, and the spotlight makes her feel deeply loved and appreciated. We also see a curious and dualistic (she's bilingual!) Gemini Sun in the 11th house, which greatly supports her in nailing roles like the best friend or the sci-fi warrior. Her freedom-loving Sagittarius Moon tells us that truth and travel are instinctive and a very necessary part of her lifestyle. In Marcos' chart we find an artistic, sensitive, and esoteric Pisces stellium. With serious Saturn opposing his Sun, we know that his artistic confidence took awhile to mature and he can still struggle with hesitancy when it comes to self-expression. We also see a deep and private Moon/Pluto opposition that can create emotional ferociousness when provoked or defeated. With Venus in Capricorn we see that once in a relationship he's deeply committed and that social status is important to him. Together, their synastry tells a story that we weren't expecting for a couple that has been married for twelve years! First, we see a Sun/Moon square causing tension and unbalance between what is truth and what is fantasy. This can also create feelings of insecurity and disharmony in the home. We also see an intense Mars/Mars opposition, causing the projection of anger and frustration onto one another. We do find comfort and ease in a generous Jupiter/Venus conjunction which might be responsible for their immediate and larger-than-life attraction to each other, but can it sustain them through tougher aspects like Neptune square the Sun and Saturn square the Moon? Greetings and welcome to Scorpio season! I am pleased to connect with you from Bangkok and extend my warm regards. You may have noticed that I am using a new platform for this newsletter, complete with a refreshed design and format. I invite you to listen to the introduction on the latest podcast episode, where I share the inspiration behind these changes. For those who have been with me since 2020 or during the Soul Tending days, I would like to take a moment to express my heartfelt gratitude for your continued support. Your openness to this new chapter is truly valued and appreciated. As we embrace the transformative energy of Scorpio season, I feel it's important to shift our focus from the usual thematic analyses to the key transits that can shed light on your unique natal chart and personal experiences. My goal is to offer compassionate guidance as we navigate the changes happening around us, all while honoring the path of your soul. For a deeper understanding of how these transits can aid you, I encourage you to tune in to the podcast. Below, I've included a short version of what I shared in this episode.Key Transits:SUN* Sun enters Scorpio, October 22: The Sun serves as a crucial source of light, illuminating both evident truths and the more nuanced aspects of our consciousness. Scorpio is associated with the exploration of intimacy by revealing psychological secrets or hidden wounds and traumas that may lead to suppressions and taboos. This transformative process can foster a deeper understanding of ourselves, which is foundational for forming meaningful and intimate one-on-one relationships. As the Sun transitions through Scorpio from October 22nd to November 20th, we are encouraged to recognize and address our emotional wounds and traumas. Engaging in this inner work can be challenging, but it also offers the potential for healing and personal growth, guiding us toward strength and resilience. You are not alone in this endeavor; this journey is about discovering light in even the most difficult moments alongside those we hold dear.* Sun in Scorpio opposite Uranus Rx in Taurus, November 16: This intense astrological aspect reflects a significant shift in the financial dynamics of our relationships, driven by larger global circumstances. We are navigating some profound changes with Pluto in Capricorn guiding the Sun in Scorpio and Venus in Capricorn influencing Uranus in Taurus. Saturn retrograde in Pisces is pivotal, steering both Pluto and Venus. Additionally, Neptune retrograde at 27° Pisces guides Saturn while forming a supportive sextile with Uranus at 25° Taurus and Pluto at 29° Capricorn. As most outer planets take a retrograde path, we are encouraged to slow down and communicate thoughtfully. This period asks us to act responsibly and engage only when it's truly necessary as we come together to envision a future marked by peace and prosperity.MOON* Scorpio New Moon, November 1st: The New Moon at 9° Scorpio unfolds at 5:47 am PDT, inviting us to explore our vulnerabilities and inner truths with compassion. Guided by Mars in Cancer, the Scorpio New Moon encourages us to reflect on how we might be unintentionally harming ourselves through actions driven by unhealthy emotional habits such as relying on substances, toxic relationships, or other false comforts. It's a powerful moment for transformation, allowing us to shift our approach to nurturing—moving away from defensiveness and towards sensitivity and gentleness. This New Moon forms a close trine with Saturn Rx in Pisces, emphasizing the importance of emotional resourcefulness. It reminds us that we can create deeper connections between our intimate relationships and our spiritual selves, fostering a nurturing environment for our hearts and souls.* Taurus Full Moon, November 15th: The Full Moon arrives as the Sun at 24° Scorpio opposes the Moon at 24° Taurus at 1:28 pm PST. This lunar phase brings a unique contrast between the peace-loving Taurus Moon and the emotionally intense Scorpio Sun. This opposition is particularly powerful, especially with the Sun also facing off with Uranus Rx in Taurus as the Moon forms a harmonious sextile with Neptune Rx in Pisces. This lunation marks the culmination of emotional experiences that began during the New Moon in Taurus six months ago, on May 7th.MERCURY* Mercury in Scorpio opposite Uranus Rx in Taurus, October 30: The messenger Mercury, in a heartfelt dialogue with the revolutionary Uranus at 25°, reflects a significant moment in our relationship. Their conversation mirrors the struggles many of us face—financial constraints that can lead us to explore deeper psychological patterns and have complex discussions about issues like economic inequality, which are magnified by the ongoing wars and climate change. As we navigate this challenging landscape, Mercury encourages us to engage in candid conversations about the root causes of poverty and to examine our scarcity mindsets.* Mercury enters Sagittarius, November 2: In Sagittarius, Mercury is farthest from its home sign, Gemini. This position may present challenges in fully expressing our communication and networking skills. There may be a tendency to become immersed in abstract philosophical concepts. It is essential to remain mentally grounded and focused through a practical mindset. However, Mercury in Sagittarius transit is an opportune time to integrate both mind and heart and engage with intuitive capabilities, fostering a balanced approach to navigate this period effectively. By harmonizing intuitive insights with rational thought processes, we can pursue healing, explore creative potential, and uncover deeper truths. Collectively, these measures can facilitate a productive path toward a greater understanding of ourselves and the world.VENUS* Venus in Sagittarius square Saturn Rx in Pisces, October 28: Venus makes significant aspects with the outer planets—Saturn, Jupiter, and Neptune from October 28th to November 9th. During this period, we may encounter valuable lessons regarding our connections. The square to Saturn on October 28th may present some challenges, urging us to align with values that genuinely support our physical and emotional well-being. These core values transcend lofty ideals, connecting instead to our sensory experiences. Engaging with simplicity and nature can help us navigate the myriad of choices, allowing our natural preferences to emerge more freely. Take a look at which house 12° - 27° Sagittarius occupies in your chart, as this area may require attention through the Saturnian practices of slowing down, simplifying, and approaching life with patience, practicality, and devotion.* Venus in Sagittarius opposite Jupiter Rx in Gemini, November 3: We might find ourselves facing relationship dynamics influenced by complex ideas that warrant careful examination. To foster clarity and avoid misunderstandings, it's essential to engage thoughtfully and avoid becoming entangled in negativity. Following this aspect, Venus will form a trine with Chiron Rx in Aries, creating an opportunity for healing through physical movement. If challenges in communication or relationships arise, consider taking moments throughout the day to refresh your mind through physical activity.* Venus in Sagittarius square Neptune Rx in Pisces, November 9th: This challenging aspect highlights the importance of mental respite through physical relaxation. Balancing our mental activities with nurturing both body and spirit is crucial. Cultivating a sense of inner nourishment allows us to express selfless love while maintaining healthy personal boundaries and self-care.* Venus enters Capricorn, November 11: This brief three-week transit highlights a significant shift in personal values influenced by the evolving political and financial landscape, marking the concluding phase of Pluto's sixteen-year journey through Capricorn. It symbolizes a transitional moment for an entire generation, as Pluto will not revisit Capricorn for the next 248 years. Consequently, it is an opportune time to embrace the lessons that Capricorn offers, particularly in areas related to Venus—such as business relationships, social and political discourses, and long-term partnerships.* Venus in Capricorn square North Node in Aries, November 14th: The square to the Node of Destiny presents an opportunity for Venus in Capricorn to transition from an emphasis on material values to a deeper consideration of what nourishes the soul. This shift is pivotal in moving beyond victimhood and scarcity mindsets, allowing us to take the lead in our own lives while inspiring others to pursue their individual paths. It is worth noting that some leaders may exhibit behaviors that reflect wounded masculine energy, often resorting to dramatic measures to express their frustrations. By cultivating self-awareness and fostering effective communication within our communities, we can collectively work towards manifesting our destinies rather than being influenced solely by external authority or popular opinion.MARS* Mars in Cancer opposite Pluto in Capricorn, November 3: Mars and Pluto are recognized as co-rulers of the deeply insightful sign of Scorpio. From October 2024 to January 2025, these two formidable planets find themselves in opposition, with Mars embodying courage and Pluto representing transformation. Notably, Mars will enter a retrograde phase from December 6 to February 23, 2025, culminating in another precise opposition to Pluto on January 2nd while retrograding in Leo. Before this extended interaction with Pluto, Mars will form a sextile with Uranus Rx in Taurus on October 24th, followed by a trine with Neptune Rx in Pisces on October 28th. These positive aspects can provide inspiration for creative solutions that enhance emotional security through innovative financial approaches and intuitive insights, positioning Mars in Cancer, the sensitive warrior, to navigate the lessons presented by Pluto.* Mars enters Leo, November 3: Following Mars' opposition to Pluto before sunrise, Mars transitions from Cancer to Leo at 8:09 PM PDT. This shift into Leo will be significant, as the duration of this transit is extended due to Mars retrograding back to 17° Cancer before resuming direct motion on February 24, 2025, and ultimately leaving Leo on April 18, 2025. During its extended stay in Cancer, Mars plays a vital role in helping us transform past emotional challenges into present-day psychological strength that bolsters our openheartedness and enthusiasm. The two-month period in Leo, from November 3rd to January 6, 2025, offers Mars a more uplifting experience and invites us to embrace creative joy by engaging in heartfelt and fun activities such as arts, hobbies, games, and romantic pursuits.JUPITER* Jupiter Rx in Gemini sextile Chiron Rx in Aries, November 2: As Jupiter moves through Gemini, it offers us a compassionate invitation to embrace change and pursue new opportunities for learning and connection. At the same time, Chiron reminds us to recognize any obstacles that may be draining our vitality and affecting our well-being. This meaningful interaction between Jupiter's adaptable energy and Chiron's healing presence, both in retrograde, encourages us to slow down and engage in a period of self-reflection. It's a perfect moment to take the time we need to fully process information before stepping forward with confidence. SATURN* Saturn stations direct, November 15: The wise grandfather Saturn, positioned in the spiritual realm of Pisces, serves as a gentle guide as we navigate the transformative energies of Pluto in Capricorn and Aquarius. In a time filled with rapid societal changes and technological advancements, it's vital to find spiritual steadfastness. Since Saturn went retrograde on June 29th, many of us may have felt a sense of heaviness and sluggishness over the past 5 1/2 months. The ongoing U.S. election season, along with the conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine, can leave us feeling caught in a collective impasse. This environment may heighten our sense of responsibility and lead to feelings of disconnection from our purpose, creating a struggle with motivation. For those who have been attuned to Saturn's call, the last few months have been a valuable time for conserving energy and nurturing the spirit through rest and exploration of dreams, all while handling worldly duties. As Saturn prepares to station direct on November 15th, there is a wonderful opportunity for renewing our commitment to self-mastery and spiritual growth.PLUTO* Pluto enters Aquarius, November 19: For the last 16 years, as Pluto has traversed Capricorn, we've witnessed a significant shift in our priorities. Many of us have moved away from a strong focus on career and personal achievement, and have begun to prioritize mental health and soul fulfillment. The Great Resignation, often viewed as a byproduct of the pandemic, connects astrologically to the 2020 Saturn-Pluto conjunction and took off in 2021. This global event has had a lasting impact, leading to collective job loss and career changes, giving many of us the space to pause and realign our lives. It's a chance to rethink our purposes and roles in society. Looking ahead, Pluto will be in Aquarius until January 2044, a sign that symbolizes humanism and scientific progression. This 20-year period offers a powerful opportunity for growth, as well as the challenge of navigating the new era and integrating our relationships with one another as innovative beings.I appreciate you taking the time to reflect on Scorpio season and embrace soul care with me. Franklyn Mars bails his son Forrest out of jail. Then Forrest decides to build a bigger company. Mars is an absolute empire. Dave Young: Welcome to The Empire Builders Podcast, teaching business owners the not-so-secret techniques that took famous businesses from mom-and-pop to major brands. Stephen Semple is a marketing consultant, story collector, and storyteller. I'm Stephen's sidekick and business partner, Dave Young. Before we get into today's episode, a word from our sponsor, which is ... Well, it's us, but we're highlighting ads we've written and produced for our clients. So here's one of those. [Travis Crawford HVAC Ad] Dave Young: Welcome back to The Empire Builders Podcast. Dave Young here talking to Stephen Semple, and we're going to talk about business empires that went from nothing and turned into, as we say, empires. Stephen Semple: Yes, sir. Dave Young: Right? That's the premise. Now people know the underlying premise of the podcast. Let's get on with it. You whispered in my ear, as you hit the countdown button, that today we're going to talk about the Mars Corporation. The Mars Corporation. Stephen Semple: Yeah. Dave Young: But we're not talking about Percival Lowell and his telescope thinking that there were canals on Mars. Stephen Semple: No, no we're not. Dave Young: We're talking about candy bars. Is that right? Stephen Semple: Yeah, we're talking about a lot of candy bars. Dave Young: So I at least got that going for me. I figured out that this is not the Bugs Bunny villain. This is ... Stephen Semple: Dave, you're not feeling well, but you still bring it. I like it. Dave Young: Yeah. Just in this day and age, full transparency, I'm doing this with COVID. Stephen Semple: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Dave Young: But fortunately, we record over the internet. Stephen Semple: That's it. Got our virus protection on. Dave Young: I've got a mask sitting right next to my microphone. Stephen Semple: Yeah. Mars is massive. One half of the top candy bar names on the planet are part of Mars: Mars, Snickers, Skittles, Milky Way, 3 Musketeers, and M&M's. Dave Young: All right, so how far back does this go? Stephen Semple: Well, we're actually going to do two sections of this. We're going to go right back to the beginning, and also we're going to do something around the time that they added some of these extra names that was really kind of interesting. Dave Young: So how many years back? Is there a Mr. Mars or a Mrs. Mars? Stephen Semple: Oh, yes. It was Franklin Mars. Dave Young: All right, all right. Stephen Semple: 1911, Franklin Mars. Dave Young: 1911. Stephen Semple: Yeah. Dave Young: Because what I picture the Mars Corporation full of now is a bunch of suits that are like Slugsworth in Willy Wonka. Stephen Semple: Well, they are $45 billion in revenues. Dave Young: Yeah. Yeah. Stephen Semple: They are 130,000 employees. Dave Young: Dang. Stephen Semple: And they're still owned by the Mars family. Dave Young: Oh. Well, that makes me feel good. Stephen Semple: There you go. Dave Young: That actually does because I just picture that big of a company, nobody in the boardroom actually cares about chocolate, but I'm glad to ... So let's dive in. I'm all ears now. Stephen Semple: And they're literally one of the top five privately-owned companies in the world. But yes ... Dave Young: Amazing. Stephen Semple: It's really remarkable that they're still family-owned. So as we were talking about earlier, founded in 1911 by Franklin Mars in Tacoma, Washington. And the reason why we're sort of taking two looks at this company, there's kind of what Franklin Mars did to start the company, but it was really his son, Forrest Mars, who made it huge. Dave Young: Okay. Stephen Semple:

“Plants do a beautiful job at helping to bridge the mind and body together”. - Mars Mars, a dedicated folk herbalist and community builder, is deeply connected to her ancestral lineage and the earth-based healing traditions of Curanderismo. Inspired by her great-grandmother's wisdom, Mars embarked on a journey to rediscover the healing powers of plants and to cultivate a deeper relationship with nature. Through her personal experiences and extensive travels, she has gained invaluable insights into the mind-body healing potential of plant consciousness. With a mission to guide others toward a more profound connection with the natural world, Mars believes that understanding our surroundings helps us better understand ourselves, leading to profound healing and personal growth. In this episode, you will learn: How tapping into the power of plant consciousness can enhance your overall well-being via deep healing and connection. How to elevate your intuitive abilities and presence by nourishing your bond with the natural world. The importance of understanding our roots and lineage as part of our healing journey, as well as the challenges faced by our ancestors, and how their resilience has allowed us to be here today. How we can support indigenous communities and learn from their wisdom by amplifying their voices, respecting their traditions, and acknowledging their resilience.
This month the planetary action is still largely in the western evening skies. Earth is at equinox on Tuesday, 21 March. At this time day and night are roughly equal in duration. March 2; Venus and Jupiter at their closest. March 3; Mercury and Saturn close low in the twilight. March 4; apogee Moon. March 7; Full Moon. March 15; Last Quarter Moon. March 20; the thin crescent moon near Saturn in the morning twilight. March 20; Moon at perigee. March 22; New Moon. March 24; the crescent Moon is very close to Venus in the twilight. March 29; First Quarter Moon. March 28; the Moon is close to Mars. March 30, Mars close to open cluster M35. March 31; Venus is just 1.5 degrees from Uranus. MERCURY: Mercury falls back towards the eastern horizon and is lost to view early in the month, reappearing in the evening twilight late this month. On the 3rd Mercury and Saturn are about 1 degree apart, deep in the twilight. You will need a level, unobstructed horizon and binoculars to see the pair at their best. VENUS: Venus climbs yet higher in the evening sky this month; the low angle of the ecliptic means it never gets really high although it is prominent at nautical twilight by end of the month when Venus is (just) visible when the sky is full dark. Venus has three close encounters this month. The stand out is on the 2nd when Venus and Jupiter are just 0.5 apart, visible well before nautical twilight, difficult telescopically. On the 24th Venus will be just 1° from the crescent moon, making a fine binocular sight. Venus currently looks like a gibbous Moon. On the 31st Venus is just 1.5 degrees from Uranus. MARS: Mars is making a line with Aldebaran and Beta Taurii. At the beginning of the Month Mars also forms a triangle with Beta and Zeta Taurii (the tips of the horns). Mars is shrinking in telescopic view but is still a worthwhile telescopic object this month. By the end of the Month Mars is close to the open cluster M35, an excellent sight in binoculars. On the 28th Mars is around 4° from the waxing moon (very obvious as the brightest object near the moon), mid power binocular fields will just fit the pair in. JUPITER: Jupiter is lowering in the north-western evening sky. Jupiter and Venus have been approaching each other all February, and on the 2nd on March they are just 0.5° apart. Jupiter continues to sink towards the horizon and is lost to view around mid month. SATURN: Saturn enters the morning skies but is only really visible from mid-March. On the 3rd Saturn is about 1 degree from Mercury deep in the twilight. You will need a level, unobstructed horizon and binoculars to see the pair at their best. On the 20th Saturn is close to the thin crescent moon low in the morning twilight.

Read the detailed forecast at https://www.planetaryinfluence.com/forecasts/2022/Aug SUN - For the first half of August, we continue our focus on family time as the Sun finishes his tour of Cancer, a sensitive and homey environment. This is a good time to make sure your heart and mind are on the same page. As you analyze what needs to stay, go, or change, consider how both your time and space will be affected by your personal decisions. For the latter half of August, the Sun, which represents how we express ourselves as an individual, will travel through his own sign of Leo, which means that it's a great time for “me” time, for solo projects, and for celebrating life with friends. The Sun is fiery and traversing fiery territory, and with other factors involved, could be subject to unexpected situations that engender fear or frustration. Make sure to balance the heated planetary weather with personal efforts to maintain the cool and calm.MOON - August begins with a waxing Moon that becomes a full Moon in Capricorn, August 11. This could feel like a pivotal moment, caught between responsibility toward others while at the same time attempting to fulfill personal ambitions. That it may be possible to build a structure that will handle both could become evident.Through the second part of August, the Moon begins to wane, once again joining the Sun for a new Moon in Leo on August 27.This time of the month can find our reserves of mental and physical energy low. It is a good time to rest and regroup. Leo is a good environment for assessing personal satisfaction. Don't allow yourself to be talked out of going for what is really important.MARS - Mars energy is felt as power, drive, strategy, resource management and problem solving. Like the Sun, Mars can push us toward making sure our personal requirements are fulfilled. This energy has been amplified since late June when Mars moved into Aries. We should feel a shift around August 10, when Mars changes signs to Taurus, where he will spend 6 of the next 7 months.Where we may have felt driven, impatient or edgy with Mars in Aries, we may begin to use the resources and materials we've collected to improve, strengthen and beautify our surroundings. Doing our work, enjoying our food and focusing on creative pursuits, we may find ourselves calm and content. Settle in, because Mars has some good work to do in Taurus for the next couple of months.MERCURY - Mercury's condition is associated with how communications and transactions go. Until August 20, Mercury runs through Leo, which is a great time to get a clear head about self-expression, solo projects, and writing of any kind. Time to practice for performance, memorize lines, doodle until a good idea shows up, and have fun doing it. Mercury will travel through Virgo from August 20 - October 24, a similar timeframe to Mars moving through Taurus. The combination of these two transits (Mercury in Virgo with Mars in Taurus) strongly supports material manifestation of long envisioned projects. Mercury in Virgo is great for hands-on work, analytics, lesson planning, writing, harvesting and processing. Just do it, as they say. JUPITER - Jupiter's transits reflect our growth processes and potential and are associated with positive outcomes, wisdom, and purpose. From April 2022 - April 2023, Jupiter benefits many domains of lifeKerry offers private sessions and mentoring. BOOK A SESSION.Find updates on Kerry's: Web Site, Facebook, Instagram, and Email List
July 2022 Astrological Forecastby Kerry Shamblinhttps://www.planetaryinfluence.com/forecasts/2022/JulSummary: In Plain English SUN - For the first half of July, the Sun travels through Gemini, which can bring a slate of rapid changes and a demanding schedule, which could lead to exhaustion, because the Sun is very strong during the early summer months. We feel as if we can keep going and see everything there is to see—by imbibing the abundant sunlight alone. The latter half of July has the Sun moving into Cancer, which could lead us into necessary self-care or withdrawal from frantic activities that have been draining our energy. The Sun in Cancer can make us feel resentful if we are forced to serve as caretaker to others, because we feel drained from too much activity. Make plans for more relaxation, family time, and waterside fun during July.MOON - Early in July, the Moon waxes, growing stronger and becoming full in Sagittarius on July 13. When the Moon is full, our mental activity and emotional responses can become difficult to control, while our physical energy feels ample. Beware of overspeculation from July 11 to 13. Late in July, the Moon wanes and moves past the other planets, which could leave us feeling vulnerable, sensitive, and anxious. With the Sun in Cancer concurrently, this re-emphasizes the advice to schedule enough calm time for rest and rejuvenation. On July 28, the Moon joins the Sun in Cancer for the New Moon; some other influences could feel like attacks that inspire retreating into a safe space.MARS - Mars' influence during July could be hard to handle. Mars will move through Aries, which makes him very powerful, hot, and potentially aggressive. With good planning, this energy could be used to achieve great work. The unstable and amplifying energy of Rahu, which will enhance Mars' firepower this month, could manifest as sudden disruptions to ongoing operations. While it is difficult to plan for unforeseen circumstances, it is possible to be ready for anything. Don't allow frustration at unwanted change to overtake your faculties of logic. We will need all of the problem-solving magic we can get in July. Balance this very hot placement of Mars with cooling and calming activities that also create a channel for letting off physical, mental, and emotional steam.MERCURY - The winged sandal image we have of Mercury holds true this month as Mercury dashes through two signs: his own sign of Gemini for the first half of July and into Cancer for the latter half. This means that our messenger is walking hand-in-hand with the Sun for the entire month, which gives us an opportunity to really express what we are thinking and feeling on a heart-and-soul level. With the speed of Mercury, we may feel like packing in too much activity, and we may overestimate our energy reserves. Plan for a light work schedule during the latter half of July, which supports organizing, getting in touch with friends, and catching up on small tasks, communications, repairs, and projects at home.JUPITER - We are enjoying the positive and expansive vibes of Jupiter as he sails through the universal ocean of Pisces. All of the water signs (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) are boosted by this transit through April 2023. Jupiter helps us to hold space through challenging transitions, and he reminds us to fall back on our connection with nature and divinityKerry offers private sessions and mentoring. A note from Talking Taiwan host Felicia Lin: Dr. Jeng Yen is a NASA scientist and the “driver” of the Perseverance Mars rover. I initially interviewed Dr. Yen on April 9th. We spoke about how he was first inspired to join NASA by the first Mars rover Sojourner, what’s been discovered about Mars since then, the work of Mars rover Perseverance and the Mars helicopter Ingenuity which is poised to be the first aircraft to fly on Mars. I spoke with Dr. Yen again this past Friday, April 16th and he gave me an important update on the Mars helicopter Ingenuity which has had to delay the date of its first flight on Mars. We are excited to learn that on Monday April 19th Ingenuity has indeed made history as the first aircraft humans have flown on another planet- Mars! It’s 1965 and Forrest Mars has just become the manufacturer of Snickers and M&M’s. He is now – at last – ready to duke it out with Hershey in a battle to become the number one candy maker in America. And he knows Hershey is far from prepared for his sudden switch from ally to enemy. Hershey is a company wedded to tradition. It has no marketing department, doesn’t advertise, and has a completely complacent sales team. The question is: can Hershey shake off its docile ways in time to stop Forrest’s relentless advance?Exciting news! Here are once again with the fabulous Nerds for the weekly episode of hijinks and merriment. This week we look at topics that will hopefully entertain you, perhaps educate you, perchance even make you laugh. As usual we have our three Nerds, idiots, nutjobs, wackjobs, funny farm contenders, or as we like to say, your hosts. Bucky, Professor and the DJ. Bucky is our slightly older, kind of grumpy Nerd, who dislikes Mumble rappers, reality TV and generally stupidity. Professor our younger Nerd who likes gaming, long walks to the camp fire, and his Switch when on the bus. Last but not least, we have the DJ, the resident Droid that no one is looking for, who likes anime, games and laughing. First topic up this week is about some new illustrated novels, or omics, from the Firefly franchise. The DJ is challenged to finally watch the series to help him discover his inner Browncoat, will he be brave enough to walk down the street in a hat like that and show he aint afraid of nothing? We will find out, but by my pretty blue bonnet if he doesn’t we will aim to misbehave and cause mischief. Next up we look at the stress and traumatic conditions developers are suffering through to bring us new games. With reports of people developing PTSD, and hiding this fact so they can get jobs. This is seriously messed up, what these people are going through is downright wrong and needs to be looked at. Also Buck has a rant about the need to look after each other because he is sick and tired of morons putting profit before people. Last up Buck brings us an article about Rainbows. No, he hasn’t become a hippie or something drastic. He just felt we needed to take a moment and look around us and admire the simple things, you know, kind of like smell the roses and noticed the politicians as people (we think they are, but don’t hold us to that – Ed.). So we have 20 facts about rainbows and one of which is that the Greeks thought there were only three colours in the rainbow. We follow this with the usual look at the games we have been playing this week and give you a run down on them. Concluding with the episode with the regular Shout outs, remembrances, birthdays and events for the week that we all love. As always, take care of each other and stay hydrated.EPISODE NOTES:Firefly comics - https://comicbook.com/comics/2019/05/13/firefly-the-sting-joss-whedon-boom-studios/MK 11 & PTSD - https://www.kotaku.com.au/2019/05/id-have-these-extremely-graphic-dreams-what-its-like-to-work-on-ultra-violent-games-like-mortal-kombat-11/Rainbows - http://discovermagazine.com/2019/may/20-things-you-didnt-know-about--rainbowsGames currently playingProfessor – Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead - https://cataclysmdda.org/ Buck – Monster Truck Drive - https://store.steampowered.com/app/847870/Monster_Truck_Drive/DJ – Dota 2 - https://store.steampowered.com/app/570/Dota_2/Other topics discussedChanges to Santa Clarita Diet- https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/live-feed/santa-clarita-diet-creator-explains-season-3-talks-season-4-1198429Ed Boon’s take on fatalities- https://www.businessinsider.com.au/mortal-kombat-creator-ed-boon-explains-how-new-fatalities-are-made-2019-3?r=US&IR=TFacebook content moderators having PTSD- https://futurism.com/the-byte/facebook-content-moderators-lawsuit-ptsdGrumpy Cat (internet personality)- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grumpy_CatAll Dogs gone to Heaven (1989 film)- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/All_Dogs_Go_to_HeavenLinguistic relativity and the colour naming- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linguistic_relativity_and_the_color_naming_debateChromatic aberration - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chromatic_aberrationPot of gold at the end of the rainbow- http://luckyireland.com/the-origin-of-a-pot-of-gold-at-the-end-of-the-rainbow/Minecraft Earth (mobile game)- https://www.minecraft.net/en-us/earthDota 2 New Character: Mars - Character bio - https://dota2.gamepedia.com/Mars- Mars’ character design - https://steamcdn-a.akamaihd.net/apps/dota2/images/mars/hero_mars93fd33s5.jpgShadow of the Colossus (2006 game)- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shadow_of_the_ColossusTrials Fusion (2014 game)- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trials_FusionStunt Car Arena (arcade game)- http://www.arcadespot.com/game/stunt-car-arena/Millionaire’s advice to young people – stop spending smashed avocados - https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2017/may/15/australian-millionaire-millennials-avocado-toast-houseColorectal Cancer also known as colon cancer- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colorectal_cancerDiamond Jubilee of Elizabeth II- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diamond_Jubilee_of_Elizabeth_IIQueen Victoria- Bio - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queen_Victoria- Queen Victoria with her grandchildren and other guests - https://images.immediate.co.uk/volatile/sites/7/2018/01/Queen_victoria_family-fd7d69f.jpg?quality=90&resize=768,574Stevie Wonder catches microphone stand- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HUgngvsWLlECarrie Fisher roasts George Lucas- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lZ97s396kb0Mark Zuckerberg will eat meat he kills- https://www.huffingtonpost.com.au/2017/07/13/mark-zuckerberg-will-only-eat-meat-he-kills-himself_a_23027199/Apple loses money than the value of Facebook- https://www.businessinsider.com.au/apples-market-cap-falls-by-450-billion-more-than-the-value-of-facebook-2019-1?r=US&IR=TWalt Disney - Bio and urban myth on Walt’s body is frozen - https://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walt_Disney- Human bones in Disneyland - https://collinsrace1.wordpress.com/2018/10/29/are-there-human-bones-at-disney-parks/Elvis Lives (That’s Not Canon Podcast)- https://thatsnotcanon.com/elvislivespodcastCaptain Jack Sparrow (Pirates of The Caribbean character)- https://pirates.fandom.com/wiki/Jack_SparrowHenry Sutton (Australian Inventor)- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_Sutton_(inventor) Shoutouts7 May 1999 - The Mummy opened and grossed $43 million in 3,210 theatres in the United States on its opening weekend. - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Mummy_(1999_film)14 May 1796 - English country doctor Edward Jenner administers the first inoculation against smallpox, using cowpox pus, in Berkeley, Gloucestershire - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_JennerRemembrances11 May 2019 – Peggy Lipton, American actress, model, and singer. The Water Trio - Astrology with Cassandra Tyndall, Kelly Surtees and Alicia Shaich Yusuf
Join astrologers Cassandra, Kelly and Alicia as they talk about all things Mars this week. On Wednesday Mars and Uranus offers up change with a bang, with one final time of energising whatever Uranus has been shifting in your chart since 2010. Then just over 24 hours later Mars moves into Taurus and we have a total contrast of slowing down, calming, and connecting with being in the present moment. What do you want to commit to and what do you want to spend your time doing? Share with us your Mars in Taurus plans... will you be baking up a storm? Walking in nature? Or revelling in the pleasure principles? Hopefully, Kelly finally makes it to the beach this week, and Cass escapes her word prison!
When we say a planet or environment is habitable, what do we mean? If we’re talking about planets, it usually means that water can exist on the planet’s surface. However, humans live in space and on the south pole and liquid water doesn’t exist there naturally. So, what does that mean for habitability? This means that the planets or moons that we are about to talk about may still be candidates, even though they sound absolutely dreadful. Habitable Zone The star will survive long enough for its planets to develop life. NASA.gov >> “The habitable zone is the distance from a star where one can have liquid water on the surface of a planet. If a planet is too close to its parent star, it will be too hot and water would have evaporated. If a planet is too far from a star it is too cold and water is frozen. Stars come in a wide variety of sizes, masses and temperatures. Stars that are smaller, cooler and lower mass than the Sun have their habitable zone much closer to the star than the Sun. Stars that are larger, hotter and more massive than the Sun have their habitable zone much farther out from the star.” That being said, new research into the habitability of exoplanets is taking into consideration factors such as the regulation of carbon dioxide in their atmosphere’s making the habitable zone in some systems larger and further out than expected. Kepler But how do we know that other habitable exoplanets are out there? We do this with Kepler. Kepler is a spacecraft in orbit around Earth, similar to the Hubble Space telescope, that searches our portion of the Milky Way and collects light from distant stars in hopes to detect planets in other systems. Most frequently, it does this by using the transit method or that of radial velocity. For the transit method to work, a planet of a distant star must pass in front of it while orbiting, then the light we collect may decrease by 1/10,000, still a large enough of a change to detect. This dip in light can last anywhere between 2 and 16 hours. Using this method, we have found extreme evidence for large quantities of three types of exoplanets; gas giants, hot-super-Earths in short period orbits, and ice giants. The hard part now though, is finding terrestrial planets (i.e., those one half to twice the size of the Earth), especially those in the habitable zone of their stars. How many exoplanets have we discovered? Candidate exoplanets: 4,496 Confirmed exoplanets: 3,725 Confirmed exoplanets less than twice Earth-size in the habitable zone: 53 What about right here within our solar system? We always hear that people think there is life of Mars or that we can live in the oceans of enceladus or Titan, but what do we really mean and what are we actually searching for? There are 4 worlds most discussed when speaking of life in our Solar System; Europa, Enceladus, Titan, and Mars. If you missed our episode on Europa, check it out, we’ve got everything you need to know, including all of the details of our current mission Europa Clipper that will visit the moon in the near future. Titan: Known as the cloudy moon of Saturn, Titan is considered a possible destination for humans simply because it is just one of the least hostile places for humans in our solar system. It has lakes, rivers, streams, hills valleys, but you won’t find water necessarily, you’ll find lakes of methane. Scientists even believe that where life on earth is water-based, that we may find entirely new methane-based life there. I will say that a huge downfall is its temperature. Is average surface temperature is -290F (-179C), but the rest of it sounds awesome! It’s atmosphere is only 1.5x that of Earth, so your suit wouldn’t have to be pressurized, AND, Titan is what we call Tidally-locked. Which means that on the right spot on the moon, you have a constant view of the most beautiful planet in our Solar System, although Ariana Grande may disagree. Enceladus Known as the Icy Moon of Saturn, Enceladus has growing evidence for life… yes.. Alien life. However, it may not be exactly what you think. Just like Europa, Enceladus is completely frozen over, but plumes of hydrogen observed and sampled from the Cassini spacecraft suggest that Enceladus harbors a subsurface oceans, complete with hydrothermal vents on it’s ocean floor, just like Earth. In fact, 4 of the 6 most necessary elements for life on Earth have also been spotted there; carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, and oxygen — have been found at Enceladus; only phosphorus and sulfur haven’t been seen there. This being said, the kind of life they expect to be there is the kind of bacteria that feeds on thee hydrogen vents. Just bacteria. This, in regards to habitability, would be an extremely poor place for humans to thrive today. In the future though, we may find ways to make use of those elements for our survival. Mars What about Mars? Mars sits right on the boundary of our habitable zone, we know that water exists on t’s surface for at least a short while and we speculate that it used to 4 billion years ago, but what about now? Short answer? Absolutely! Mars is the most welcoming to humans for many reasons. First and foremost, it has frozen water it’s it’s poles. On Mars, scientists believe that we can sustain a habitat, research facility, and eventually a garden. It is deadly cold the radiation alone could fry us due to its lack of radiation field, but we’re currently working on creating sustainable habitat and methods to fight against such perils. For example, scientists in the netherlands have created these synthetic leafs made of silicone rubber, which take in sunlight and convert it into enough power to fuel the necessary chemical reactions to make things like medicine. Once we master the process of converting naturally occuring Martian resources for ourselves, then we will have a working and sustainable outpost there in our lifetimes. TRAPPIST-1 Lastly, we can’t talk about habitable worlds without talking about the TRAPPIST-1 system. TRAPPIST-1 is a star about 40 light years from our Sun, with 7 potentially habitable worlds. We don’t mean “habitable” like Titan or Enceladus. We mean habitable like we might be able to live there with ease. You see, they’ve measured the mass and volume of these planets to be less dense than rock, and they are too small to have the gas necessary to offset the lack of density. Therefore, scientists predict that water is abundant on most or all of these worlds. That being said, they may have too much water to qualify as an actually habitable environment, but we are continuing to study them and they are excellent candidates to observe to learn more about habitable worlds and systems.
Why are we as a human race so fascinated with Mars? Where did this desire come from? What have we sent there already and what are we sending now? Find out in this episode of Space, But Messier! News: UPDATE: Chinese Space Station Tiangong-1 still falling, but China has been monitoring Tiangong-1 and has determined that the space lab will burn up after entering the atmosphere and the remaining wreckage will fall into a designated area in the sea, without endangering the earth. NASA is building a HAMMER Not a hammer like one in your toolbox at home, instead, they’re building a Hypervelocity Asteroid Mitigation Mission for Emergency Response (HAMMER). The plan is to protect our planet from asteroids before they can reach Earth. This project is headed up by NASA, the US National Security Administration and a weapons lab from the US Energy Department. There are two ways the system could prevent an asteroid from slamming into Earth. Firstly, it would hit an asteroid to knock it off course and miss our planet. The second, and infinitely more dangerous, is that HAMMER would detonate an on-board nuclear warhead to splinter or destroy it altogether. Part of the reason for the development of HAMMER is NASA's monitoring of an asteroid named Bennu. (Ben-noo) Bennu can be seen every six years from Earth – but in 2135 it is expected to pass between us and the Moon. That could tweak its orbit and set it on a direct course for our planet. This year, NASA’s Osiris-Rex probe will arrive and spend a year surveying Bennu, which orbits the sun at 63,000mph. (Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, Security, Regolith Explorer || God of Ancient Egypt) Mars Pt.1 | Past & Present Why Mars? Why not Venus, Mercury, the Moon? Mars may be our closest planetary neighbor, close in size and the length our days. We may even be able to survive there for a bit. But why does everybody want to go to the red planet? What is Mars? Mars is much colder than Earth, with an average temperature of -80F or -60C 38% Earth’s gravity. (Moon is 16% of Earth’s gravity) The atmosphere of Mars is also almost 100 times thinner than Earth's, but it is still thick enough to support weather, clouds and winds. However, if you’ve seen the Martian, you may be wondering how accurate the storm seen is. For those who haven’t seen it… Giant dust devils often kick up oxidized iron dust that covers the surface and every 5 1/2 Earth years, Mars has a global dust storm. That being said, It is unlikely that even these dust storms could strand an astronaut on Mars. Even the wind in the largest dust storms would not knock over or rip apart mechanical equipment. The winds in the strongest Martian storms top out at about 60 miles per hour, less than half the speed of some hurricane-force winds on Earth. Lastly, IT SNOWS ON MARS, instead of water, it’s made of carbon dioxide and looks more like fog than snow. History - Canali In the 1800s, telescopes were rapidly growing in size and in Milan, Italy, 1877, Giovanni Virginio Schiaparelli, began mapping and naming areas on Mars. He named the dark and light areas as "seas" and "continents". He also saw channels on Mars and called them "canali." Canali translates to channels, but it was mistranslated into "canals" in English implying intelligent life on Mars. Because of the then recent completion of the Suez Canal in 1869, people assumed that Mars must have intelligent life. Then in 1894 in Flagstaff, Arizona, Percival Lowel observed Mars himself. Knowling of the recent discovery of canals on Mars, his observations confirmed this these straight lines on the planet and mapped hundreds of them. Lowell believed that the straight lines were Martian-made canals built to transport water from the polar caps to the equator. In 1895, he published his first book on Mars with many illustrations and it was game over. 1897 - Kurd Lasswitz - Two Planets 1898 - H.G. Wells - War of the Worlds 1949 - Robert Heinline - Red Planet 1950 - Ray Bradbury - The Martian Chronicles 1951 - Arthur C. Clarke - The Sands of Mars 1961 - Robert Heinline - Stranger in a Strange Land … leading to today 2011 - Andy Weir - The Martian Satellites (Past) Mariner Spacecraft (1964-1971) were designed to be our first glimpses of Mars, being sent to Mars on a fly-by mission with MAriner 4 sending back our first ever images of another planet and Mariner 9 being the first ever satellite to enter Mars’ orbit. Mars Observer (1992) and Mars Climate Orbiter (1998) lost contact upon arrival Mars Global Surveyor arrived (1997) and orbited Mars for 4 times longer than expected. (Present) Mars Odyssey (2001) studies the composition of the planet's surface, water and ice detection, as well as radiation. Mars Express (2003) - with ESA- studies MArs’s atmosphere and surface from a polar orbit NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (2006) carries the most powerful telescopic camera ever to another planet. The Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN) spacecraft will provide information about Mars’s atmosphere, climate history and potential habitability of the planet Rovers (Past) In 1976, NASA’s Viking 1 & 2 became the first spacecraft to safely land on another planet. The Mars Pathfinder mission (1997) was meant to be a demonstration of technology. With the Carl sagan Memorial Station as it’s lander and the Sojourner Rover. However, they ended up sending back 2.3 billion bits of information, 17,000 images, and more than 15 chemical analyses from rocks and soil. Mars Polar Lander (1999) was meant to land on the frozen terrain near the edge of Mars' south polar cap and dig for water ice with a robotic arm, but unfortunately lost upon arrival The Phoenix Mars Lander (2008) successfully landed on the north polar region of Mars and it successfully dug up and analyzed icy soil. (Present) Mars Exploration Rovers (Spirit and Opportunity) (2004) search for evidence of liquid water that may have been present in the planet's past. The rovers are identical to each other, but are exploring different regions of Mars. Mars Science Laboratory (2012) is twice as long and three times as heavy as Spirit and Opportunity, Curiosity mission is to tell us if Mars is habitable, can we live there.
