Guest: Dr. Robert Wolfe Dr. Wolfe's went to college at UC Berkeley, where he was a 3-sport varsity athlete, playing basketball, track, and golf. After college, Dr. Wolfe went back to school for his PhD which led to a career in clinical research. The focus of Dr. Wolfe's research is on the regulation of muscle metabolism, particularly as affected by aging and stressors such as injury, sepsis and cancer. His research has been performed largely in human patients and normal volunteers. Dr. Wolfe has developed models using stable isotopes to quantify a variety of metabolic processes in human subjects including the oxidation and production of fatty acids, various aspects of carbohydrate metabolism, and the rates of muscle protein synthesis, breakdown, and the transport of amino acids between blood and muscle tissue. Dr. Wolfe served as a faculty member at Harvard Medical School for nine years, and is currently the Director of the Center for Translational Research in Aging and Longevity at the Reynolds Institute on Aging in Little Rock, Arkansas. He has published over 500 peer-reviewed research articles, three books, and holds many active patents. Dr. Wolfe is a co-founder of The Amino Company, which was formed to bring his patented amino acid formulas, developed over 40 years of clinical research, to the public. Summary Dr. Robert Wolf discusses the importance of protein and amino acids in the diet, the differences between animal and plant protein, and the recommended daily protein intake. He also explains the benefits of amino acid supplementation for specific conditions and the importance of balanced amino acid formulations. Dr. Wolf emphasizes the role of amino acids in liver health and detoxification, particularly the benefits of histidine. Overall, amino acids play a crucial role in maintaining optimal health and function. In this conversation, Bob Wolfe discusses the role of amino acids in liver health, specifically in the context of fatty liver disease. He explains that fatty liver disease is not solely caused by alcoholism, but is also common in individuals with obesity. Wolfe's research has shown that reducing methionine and increasing other amino acids can effectively reduce liver fat. Additionally, he mentions the potential anti-inflammatory effects of amino acids and the importance of routine dosing and timing for optimal results. Takeaways Protein is essential for optimal health and function, and amino acids are the building blocks of protein. Animal protein is generally more easily digested and absorbed than plant protein, but plant-based proteins can be combined to meet nutritional requirements. A high protein intake, above the recommended daily amount, can have numerous health benefits and is well within dietary guidelines. Amino acid supplementation can provide additional benefits beyond what can be achieved with dietary protein alone. Amino acids play a crucial role in liver health and detoxification, and histidine is particularly important in reducing liver fat and inflammation. One aspect of health and fitness that I haven't covered in a while is supplements, and I've been really interested in learning more about them lately. For this episode of the Fit is Freedom Podcast, I thought we'd do a little “show and tell,” so to speak. So…I thought I might show you all what I've been using lately to help keep me as fit and healthy as possible! Check out our videos on YouTube! Top Supplements for Aging While I am in no way, shape, or form a doctor, I do consider myself to be an excellent student when it comes to all things health and fitness. One thing I've been particularly interested in lately is supplements and how they can support our bodies as we age. There are so many different supplements on the market these days, but I wanted to share with you some of my personal favorites that I am currently utilizing in my everyday life in case you'd like to learn more. Proteins As we age, protein becomes more and more important. Not only does our body need more, but it actually craves it less, so I'm always on the lookout for sneaky ways to get more in. Of course, protein powders are a quick and easy way to do so! Here are my two current favorites… Naked Goat As the name suggests, Naked Goat is a protein powder developed from the whey of goat milk. From what I've learned, it is the easiest for us to digest, and I really enjoy the taste! Vega Pea Protein Another more popular option for protein powder is Vega. The brand is very popular and has a variety of flavors, all derived from organic pea protein and other ingredients. Amino Co Recently, we had Dr. Robert Wolfe on an episode of the Fit is Freedom Podcast where he outlined some of the incredibly brilliant science behind Amino Co and how it can be a game changer for people of all ages. I highly recommend checking out his podcast to learn how Amino Co can really help build muscle and prevent muscle loss. Join our private Facebook Group! Athletic Greens Chances are, you've heard of Athletic Greens. It's one of the most popular green drinks on the market. It's filled with so many different vitamins and minerals, and I am, personally, a big fan of the ingredient list. Its high quality ingredients really seem to cover a lot of the nutritional bases that we need, and I love starting my day getting what I need. Algae Cal The truth is…I've got bone loss. Like many Americans, it doesn't matter how much I lift or that I've been healthy my entire life, it's just something that has progressed for me over time. What I found incredibly interesting about Algae Cal is their guarantee that if you take their supplement for 6 months, you will have a favorable bone scan or you'll get your money back. Coming Soon! The fitness consistency book that will change your life! Get updates here. Novos The last on my list of current supplements is Novos. The company's whole focus is on how to stay younger for longer, and it does this in a couple of different ways. For starters, you can take their quiz and receive a score, noting your health. After that, you can explore their tips on how to improve your score, explore their longevity diet, and try out their supplements. As opposed to the others on this list, Novos is a data-driven experience to help you stay healthy longer. While this list doesn't encompass everything, and I know that everyone is different, I just thought I would share what I've been into lately! Susan and Buddy Wolfe of the McCoy area were hosts to their son, Robert Wolfe and wife Kristie of Illinois, and their children Justin and Kassie Wolfe. They also welcomed three guests, Morgan Seggerman, Emily Franklin, and Conlee Landrus. The group arrived at the Wolfe ranch on March 23. The Wolfes drove to McCoy to help celebrate Buddy's 80th birthday, which was April 9. (Due to spring break, they drove down a week early.) Food — especially the cake — was enjoyed by all after they sang “Happy Birthday” to Buddy.Article Link

I can't believe I have put out 100 episodes. I truly hope that you have enjoyed listening as much as I enjoy creating them. Hopefully over these 100 shows you have found a few helpful tips to help you train for your next obstacle course race. As always I have a great one lined up for you today. It has been a whirlwind week spending spring break in Hawaii and then hopping on a flight to Houston to watch UCONN with the Men's National Championship. It was a great time but I'm definitely feeling it this week trying to catch up. In my research review this week I share an study comparing to training protocols and measuring their effectiveness for muscle size, strength, power, and body composition. The two strategies used were block periodization and mixed session periodization. Which one came out on top? You will have to listen in to see and how you may want to adjust your training plan. In the Inside Mike's Mind segment I share my 3 step process to improving mobility. If you are like me you have to work hard to get better mobility. If you want to see improvements that last, just follow these 3 simple steps. In this episode I interviewed Former Harvard professor and world-renowned clinical researcher Dr. Robert Wolfe. He is also the Co-founder and lead scientist at Amino Co. which was founded by world leaders in amino acid clinical research for the purpose of conducting cutting-edge medical research on amino-acid based products. Amino Co's research, first funded by NASA, was developed by Dr. Robert R Wolfe and Dr. Wolfe's studies have been conducted with support from competitive research grants from the National Institutes of Health, National Space Biomedical Institute, US Department of Defense, The US Department of Agriculture, as well as the US Olympic Committee, and the International Olympic Committee. We had an incredible chat discussing the role of essential amino acids and research he has conducted in a variety of populations. We covered older individuals that have issues consuming enough protein and preventing muscle loss, research on army ranger training and dealing in an incredibly stressful and undernourished situation, as well as muscle recover and performance. I know you will get a ton out of this interview and I was grateful to have Dr. Wolfe share his expertise with me. Don't forget to check out all of Amino Company's products at www.aminoco.com/OCR. Hi Running Friends! On today's episode we have Dr. Robert Wolfe, PhD from the Amino Company. He has extensive knowledge about how amino acids work in our bodies and how they can help speed up our recovery time. Dr. Wolfe went to college at UC Berkeley, where he was a 3-sport varsity athlete. He played basketball, track and golf. He went back to school for his PhD which led to a career in clinical research. The focus of the research is on the regulation of muscle metabolism, particularly as affected by aging, injury, sepsis and cancer. His research has been performed largely in human patients and normal volunteers. Dr. Wolfe has developed models using stable isotopes to quantify a variety of metabolic processes in human subjects including the oxidation and production of fatty acids, various aspects its of carbohydrate metabolism, and the rates of muscle protein sun these breakdown and the transport of amino acids between blood and muscle tissue. Dr. Wolfe served as a faculty member at Harvard Medical school for nine years, and is currently the Direct gator of the Center Translational Research in Aging and Longevity at the Reynolds Insist on Aging in Little Rock, Arkansas. As we age, fueling our bodies properly becomes more and more important. There are certain deficiencies that we need to make up for to prevent loss of muscle mass and stay fit. One of those deficiencies we experience is protein and, more specifically, essential amino acids. This week on the Fit is Freedom Podcast I'm joined by the incredibly knowledgeable Dr. Robert Wolfe, who helps us better understand these deficiencies, what they can do to our body in the long term, and how to prevent it! With over 40 years of clinical research, three books, and over 500 peer-reviewed publications under his belt, Dr. Wolfe's vast understanding of muscle metabolism and how it can be affected by aging and stress is fascinating. Join me as we learn more about him, his journey, and how we can take actionable steps to age gracefully. Check out our videos on YouTube! About Dr. Wolfe Dr. Robert Wolfe was a college athlete at UC Berkeley, playing basketball, track, and golf. He returned not long after graduating to obtain his Ph.D., and since then, he has accrued many accolades and published a great deal of works focusing mainly on muscle metabolism. He served as a faculty professor at Harvard Medical School for nine years. Dr. Wolfe is currently the Director of Translation Research for Aging and Longevity at the Reynolds Institute of Aging in Little Rock and is also co-founding a company. Throughout his over 40 years of clinical research, he has written three books, over 500 peer-reviewed published articles and holds many active patents. How to Optimize your Diet The human body has over 3,000 major proteins and about 21 different amino acids that comprise these proteins. The amino acids and the proteins are essential in preventing muscle atrophy and loss. In addition to proper diet and exercise, supplements can help prevent the muscle loss that happens as people age. As a matter of fact, a recent study found that utilizing supplements with essential amino acids showed a 15% improvement in muscle strength and mass in men and a staggering 50% improvement in women! Join our private Facebook Group! Why do women lose more muscles as they age? As women age, menopause seems to play a significant role in protein metabolism. Changing hormones makes it harder to keep up muscle mass. Another factor that could lead to this is a dietary change in women as they age. Dr. Wolfe shared that women tend to have a sweeter taste preference as they age, which also limits their protein and amino acid intake. Why try an amino acid supplement? Supplements can even out your dietary needs to meet the basic requirements. When taking a supplement, you don't have to worry as much about the protein quantity in your diet, which can get more difficult as we age. Why are there different formulations? In Dr. Wolfe's research, he found that changing the components and ratios of the amino acids can alter your desired outcome. Everyone is different and has different lifestyles, and by varying and customizing your supplement for your lifestyle, you will reap the most benefits. Coming Soon! The fitness consistency book that will change your life! Get updates here. Who do I know which product is best for me? All products have the same basic components, just with different ratios. Here are the four products… Life This supplement is a general stimulant of muscle growth. It targets aging clients who aren't exercising and still desire to improve their amino acid intake. Perform Perform is designed to promote the maintenance of muscle during exercise. So this is ideally for people who are active and want something to take before their workouts. Heal Exercise damages our muscle tissues, and it's in the regrowth where your muscles build and strengthen. Heal is a supplement designed to help the body rebuild muscles after working out. Purity The final product Dr. Wolfe discusses is Purity, a liver product that focuses on preventing the liver from storing unnecessary fat. Can you take amino supplements and protein supplements together? It's important to incorporate supplements and added protein (as well as exercising) to reap the full benefits of muscle growth and loss prevention. Why do supplements such as these matter? At the end of the day, the ultimate goal is to live a longer and healthier life. We want to age gracefully and stay active well into our 60s, 70s, and beyond. Supplements like these aren't going to be the magic ticket, but they can be incorporated into a healthy lifestyle to help promote longevity. Schedule a FREE 15 minute discovery call with Kelly here!

The OCR Underground Show is the best resource for OCR specific training programs. In this episode I share two studies on Carbohydrates. Specifically they are about carbohydrate restriction training. When I wrote my book Fuel and Fire, my plan was to help readers understand the importance of food and training. These complement each other when done correctly and can provide powerful improvements in your performance. Carbohydrate restriction can boost or blunt results depending on how you do it. These two studies show how in one situation it can help your training and in another slow it down. In the Inside Mike's Mind segment I dive into Off Season Training for OCR. This time of year I always stress the importance of dividing your training cycles into an in season and off season plan. This might sound confusing, so I share some of the key aspects of off season training and what I am currently doing for my program. And finally I have a great chat with SGX Coach Gina DiSanto. Gina starting her fitness career over 20 years ago while living in Germany. She had to overcome a huge language barrier, but fell in love with the industry. Fast forward and she is a nutritionist, spinning and pilates instructor, as well as SGX Certified. Gina recently competed at the Spartan race in Sparta, Greece as well as the Deka World Championship. She shared some of her training plans on how she is prepping for these big races and well as how she overcome significant injury to compete at a high level again. Today's guest is Dr Robert Wolfe who is an expert in the role that protein and amino acids play in our health and vitality.Dr Wolfe has an incredible biography. His career has spanned more than 50 years and at the age of 75, he is still involved in education and research. He has published over 600 peer-reviewed papers, review articles and book chapters. He has been cited more than 50,000 times in the scientific literature. I think it's fair to say, he might know a little bit about protein. We start by talking about protein and its importance in providing amino acids to our body. Dr Wolfe explains the difference between the essential and the non-essential amino acids and how these are used to build over 3,000 different protein structures in our body.We are all aware of the importance of protein – amino acids in building and maintaining muscle, but these are vital for all our other body processes as well.Dr Wolfe is a fan of maintaining muscle and he describes how this provides a metabolic sink for glucose, preventing insulin resistance and type-2 diabetes as well as acting as a reservoir for amino acids between meals. We need a constant supply of these in our bloodstream and our muscle provides these when we aren't eating. We also discuss some of the myths about protein and disease – heart health, diabetes, kidney function and mental health.Dr Wolfe is the Chief Scientific Officer for a company called “The Amino Company” that produces formulations of amino acids for different groups. He is also the author of ‘A Guide to Amino Acid and Protein Nutrition: Essential Amino Acid Solutions for Everyone”. He calls this the EAASE programme. I am enjoying this book and it is a great summary of Dr Wolfe's research and experience in a very readable format. We ran out of time today for all the questions I had – Dr Wolfe has agreed to come back for part 2, which I'm looking forward to very much.If you enjoy this episode, please subscribe, like and share with others who may find this helpful. It's time for another Ask Me Anything episode. In today's show, Ken and Dawn tackle a wide range of listener questions about: -- Protein intake on a ketogenic diet. -- A new study on the efficacy and safety of MDMA-assisted therapy. -- The Pentagon's new report about UFOs. -- Virta Health's two-year pilot study that demonstrated people diagnosed with prediabetes had normalized their glucose through carbohydrate restriction. -- The FDA's controversial approval of the Biogen Alzheimer's disease drug Aduhelm. -- The deepest man-made pool and diving research facility that just opened in Dubai. -- Strategies to deal with the so-called “keto flu.” -- And a lot more. Enjoy. 00:02:49 A listener asks Ken about protein intake on a ketogenic diet. The listener says they have heard some experts say that protein intake should be fairly low on a ketogenic diet while other experts suggest protein needs might actually be higher than what is generally recommended. The listener, who is physically active and on a ketogenic diet but isn't seeing much muscle growth, asks Ken what the research says about what proper levels of protein on a ketogenic diet. 00:05:05 A listener asks Ken about STEM-Talk's interview with Gordon Lithgow, episode 120 of STEM-Talk, mentioning that Ken and Gordon referenced arginine AKG, a supplement often used by athletes and bodybuilders to improve their performance and reduce muscle fatigue. The listener asks if arginine AKG, or calcium AKG, or something else can help them recover from exercise as they get older. In his response, Ken discusses a 2017 meta-analysis by Robert Wolfe. Ken also mentions two essential amino acid blends, MAP Master Amino Acid Pattern. The other blend is called Mass Pro Synthagen. 00:12:09 A listener mentions in their question that there is a new study that just came out in Nature Medicine looking at the efficacy and safety of MDMA-assisted therapy for people diagnosed with severe PTSD. Nearly 70 percent of the participants who received MDMA therapy no longer qualified for a diagnosis of PTSD after two months of treatment. The listener asks Ken and Dawn if they have read this study and what their thoughts are. Ken in his response mentions two STEM-Talk episodes that touched on MDMA-assisted therapy, David Rabin in Episode 99 and Rachel Yehuda in episode 101. 00:14:37]A listener asks Ken what the justification for spending almost $3 billion on the Perseverance Mars mission is, going on to ask with all the needs here on Earth, how does NASA and Congress justify the billions that will be needed for a manned mission to Mars. 00:19:06 A listener asks how Dawn's research on glymphatic function in extreme environments is going. 00:22:31 A listener asks Kens for his thoughts on the recent media coverage of the Pentagon's new report on more 100 UFOs, or “unidentified aerial phenomena,” that the Pentagon cannot explain. 00:25:49 A listener mentions that Virta Health is wrapping up its data collection of a five-year trial that looks at nutritional ketosis as a treatment for type-2 diabetes and prediabetes. Virta recently published the results of its two-year pilot study that demonstrated people diagnosed with prediabetes had normalized their glucose in the blood through carbohydrate restriction. The listener asks Ken to comment on this two-year pilot study since Ken is affiliated with Virta. In his response, Ken mentions Amy McKenzie's 2021 paper. 00:27:17 A listener asks Ken about the controversial FDA approval of the Biogen Alzheimer's disease drug Aduhelm. Despite murky clinical trial results, the drug was fast-tracked, even though it will cost a person $56,000 annually. 00:30:57 A listener asks Dawn, given her diving background, about the deepest man-made pool and diving research facility that just opened in Dubai. 00:33:44 A listener asks Ken about a study that ran in JAMA that found that fasting for 12 hours or more led to minimal weight loss and significant ...

— “Living a life with no fear and recognizing that death is an illusion, makes it worth it.” The nature of ultimate reality can only be understood when looking from its own viewpoint. That is to say, one's conditioned perspective of reality must be put aside. The simplest explanation is to consider that one's life in the world and universe has the characterization of a dream. Into this dream, each dreamer is born. To the dreamer, the world and universe have the appearance of being real. The dreamer takes himself to be real, and therefore the world and universe this person is “in” to be real. The dreamer “knows” that he has “come into” this life, therefore at some point he will “go out” of life. The dreamer “knows” that although he will die, the world and universe and fellow dreamers will persists after his death; that the dream will continue when the dreamer no longer exists. None of this is so. When the dreamer ceases to be, the dream ceases to be. Only within the dream is it a legitimate question to ask, “How then can life and the world and universe be?” Any answer would entail the processes of time, space and cause—and—effect. Such processes occur only within the dream itself. Therefore, any answer will be an answer within the unreal dream. The point is that all that is apparent to the dreamer is simply that: an illusory appearance. What appears to be real or actual is not the same thing as what is real or actual. What is actual, is ultimate reality. Ultimate reality can be characterized as empty; no-thing or nothingness. As runners, we think about how to fuel properly. That includes carbohydrate and protein, but what about essential amino acids? How do they help us optimize our nutrition to become the best runners we can be? Dr. Robert Wolfe, Ph.D, is here to talk as both a scientist and a runner. As the director of the Center for Translational Research on Aging and Longevity at the University of Arkansas, he focuses his research on the regulation of muscle metabolism. His research publications have been cited an impressive 75,000+ times, and he shares how amino acids might be able to help your performance and recovery. Dr. Wolfe has also been running for 60 years and has run an amazing 62 marathons under 2:30 in his lifetime! Coach Claire talks to him about his running career, how to stay young and healthy, what happens in the body when we run, and how our food can help us before, during, and after the run. Dr. Wolfe also shares his thoughts on the importance of keeping a consistent exercise routine as we age, so there’s definitely a lot of great food for thought in this episode! Dr. Wolfe’s undergraduate studies were at the University of California, Berkeley, and he completed his Ph.D. degree at UC Santa Barbara’s Institute of Environmental Stress. Dr. Wolfe served as a faculty member at Harvard Medical School for nine years. Prior to accepting his current position in 2006, he was at the UT Medical Branch at Galveston, where he held the John H. Dr. Wolfe has received a number of awards and invited lectureships in recognition of his work. He received the Herman Award from the American Society of Clinical Nutrition for his career contributions. He has published over 452 peer-reviewed research articles, 126 review articles, three books, including the major reference source in the field of stable isotope tracer methodology and has 5 patents. His papers have been cited 50,663 times (h index= 122), and 16,423 (h index =65) since 2011. Dr. Wolfe has been funded continuously by the NIH for his entire career and frequently held two NIH grants per year as Pl. The focus of Dr. Wolfe’s research is on the regulation of muscle metabolism, particularly as affected by aging and stressors such as injury, sepsis and cancer. Dr. Wolfe is the Director of the Center for Translational Research in Aging and Longevity at the Reynolds Institute on Aging. Questions Bob is asked: 3:33 Before we talk about the science of exercise metabolism, I want to hear about your running journey. You’ve been a runner for over 50 years with 62 marathons under 2:30. Can you tell us a little bit about what your story is and how you started? 5:15 I can’t imagine that every single run was super fun, so I would love to talk about what your training was like, how you trained for marathons and what are the key ingredients in the recipe for a marathon? 8:06 How old were you when you did your last sub-2:30 marathon? 8:59 As far as fueling goes, what does an endurance athlete need before, during, and after exercise? 12:09 What are amino acids? What are the different kinds (essential, branched chain, etc)? And how are they used in the body? 14:56 When we’re eating enough dietary protein, does that mean we are automatically eating enough of the essential amino acids that we need? 16:53 What is the optimal amount of essential amino acids we as individuals need? 18:44 Obviously protein requirements are going to be different for an endurance runner and a bodybuilder, right? 22:51 Is the purpose of taking amino acid supplements to get everything you need for optimum performance without having to eat more food? 25:24 Is there a limit to how much amino acids the body can absorb at one? 27:55 Does the body have a way of storing essential amino acids? 29:22 If you take in too much essential amino acids, do you just excrete it? 29:44 How are the amino acids from the Amino Company produced? 32:09 How do you use amino acid supplements? Do you take it before your run, after, or even during? 36:40 When you are taking amino acids during exercise, do they activate hormones in your body? 41:00 Does your company have an amino acid formulation to help me with my insomnia too? 41:41 Besides leading the Amino Company, you are also the director of the center for translational research on aging and longevity at the University of Arkansas. So what's the secret to staying youthful and vital as we age? 43:39 Do older athletes have an advantage when it comes to longevity and aging? Questions I ask everyone: 45:32 If you could go back and talk to yourself when you started running, what advice would you give? 47:02 What is the greatest gift running has given you? 47:54 Where can listeners connect with you? Quotes by Bob: “Generally speaking, I think the protein aspect of the diet is extremely important but as far as dietary protein, when you’re eating as many as 4 or 5,000 calories a day, even a low protein diet is going to provide enough dietary protein to meet your protein requirements.” “It’s important to understand that the dietary requirements are telling us not only how much protein we should eat, but how much of each individual essential amino acid we should eat, are predicated on the baseline amount we need to avoid deficiency. And so the key aspect, what we’ll talk about with specific amino acid supplementation, is that for optimal physical functioning, particularly with stress like exercise training, that the baseline amount of essential amino acids that you need to avoid deficiency is really not optimal.” “One of the things that obviously we’re trying to do is with running is to improve muscle function and muscle strength without increasing muscle bulk because it’s just extra weight.” “The thing which is obvious when you see a lot of older people is that ability to function physically is really the primary determinant of quality of life. If you can’t get up out of a chair then medical costs and everything else go out the window, but just being able to do the activities you like is so important.” Take a Listen on Your Next Run Leave a space for libsyn link Want more awesome interviews and advice? Canadian trade policy at a risky crossroads, a Policy Options podcast. Rising economic anxieties combined with challenges to the global multilateral trade framework has necessitated a re-evaluation of Canadian trade policies and priorities. What should the pillars of Canadian trade policy look like going forward? In the IRPP’s new trade volume titled "Redesigning Canadian Trade Policies for New Global Realities", co-editors Stephen Tapp, Ari Van Assche and Robert Wolfe lay out a blueprint for improving Canada’s trade performance. More than twenty years ago, my (second) wife and I divorced, after ten years of marriage. After we divorced, I recognized that I had some unfinished business: it revolved around “the meaning of life”, which is at the bottom of the spiritual pursuit—to which I returned. As soon as our house was sold, I took my share of the equity and bought a fully-equipped camper van. I parked it on the property of an absentee friend in the redwood forest, near where I had been living in Northern California. I lived there in virtual solitude: reading, contemplating, taking walks for hours in the forest. At the end of three years, something suddenly fell into place. The spiritual quest resolutely came to an end. I discovered the actuality which is inescapable. The inseparability of all things, which has been referred to persistently by mystic sages for 3,500 years of our written history, is commonly spoken of as “oneness” (or Oneness). There is an aspect of this oneness which is rather apparent to most any attentive mind. But the aspect which seems to give many of us some difficulty has to do with our personal, individual relationship to this oneness. This latter aspect is the matter which had now become clarified for me. This radical, and sudden, shift in perspective was received like good news by me. Where before there had been confusion and perplexity concerning the relationship of the individual to the whole of existence, now there was a calming clarity. There was a profound resolution of the uneasy questing which had punctuated my prior years, a resolution which was not transitory because it has not since been apart from my general awareness. I hoped to share the good news, particularly with those whom I knew to have quested concurrently with myself. I knew, from my own experience, that a certain element of this unitive understanding is communicable from one mind to another; the analogy is sometimes given of a flame leaping from one torch to another torch. For the past fifteen years, I have conducted a considerable number of discussions (both individually and in groups) with persons who indicated their interest in resolving—and in recognizing that they had resolved—what has been called the perennial question. I have carefully observed the junctures at which their confusion compounded. I have also observed that for a few individuals there was no point at which their confusion was not surmounted, to their satisfaction. The essence of the unitive understanding is that it is liberating; the marvel of the unitive understanding is that it is basically effortless. Its liberation is a consequence of the non-attachment it engenders. This is not a detaching of piece from piece, item by item. It is an across-the-board release of attachment, which even includes non-attachment to the continuity of one's life. This dispelling of attachment is, in the same moment, the dispelling of correlated fear—and that is dynamic liberation. Robert's website. More than twenty years ago, my (second) wife and I divorced, after ten years of marriage. We both had, originally, looked forward to our years ahead with each other, and had planned for a comfortable retirement. I was in my early forties when we married, and I focused my attention on a career (as an insurance agent) so that we might further our goals. In so doing, I put aside what had been a primary interest prior to my marriage and this career: the “spiritual pursuit”, for enlightenment. It was not that something was added to my fund of knowledge; it was that I saw the truth in what was already actually present but which had been overlooked or ignored. The situation is similar to one of those “optical illusions,” which you have probably encountered: what appears to be, say, a black candlestick and its holder is displayed against a white background. But in addition to this apparent picture is a picture which is not so apparent; if the white portion is viewed as the foreground and the black, candlestick portion seen to be its background, an entirely different picture emerges: the outline of two matching profiles whose noses nearly touch. My relationship to the whole of existence was now revealed in a radically different light. If you were to view a fish in an aquarium, for instance, directly head on, what you would perceive would be remarkably different from what you would perceive if you were to shift your perspective so as to observe it broadsided. It would not be a different fish than it had been—and nothing would have been added to it—but your perception of it would now be thoroughly different. Probably a more apt analogy is that of a center-fielder making a throw to home plate: if the catcher is not fully attentive, there is nothing within the center-fielder's power which will complete the transmission. But the fact that the transmission may rarely be received is not a reason for inaction. There is a certain reasonableness, or even “logic”, to the unitive understanding—up to a point. However, in the case of this uncommon understanding,
