The brain is a curious thing, but how does curiosity happen in it? Where does curiosity begin, and what does that process look like? Curiosity does quite a lot inside the brain, from connecting dots of knowledge to shaping entire architectures of thought and organization. Understanding the underpinnings of this motivating force can allow us to harness its power for our own advancement.Dani Bassett is the J. Peter Skirkanich Professor at the University of Pennsylvania, with appointments in the Departments of Bioengineering, Electrical & Systems Engineering, Physics & Astronomy, Neurology, and Psychiatry. They are also an external professor of the Santa Fe Institute. Perry Zurn is an Associate Professor and Director of Undergraduate Studies in Philosophy Department of Philosophy & Religion at American University in Washington D.C. Bassett and Zurn are also twins, and co-authors of the new book, Curious Minds: The Power of Connection, about the nature of curiosity, where it originates from, and how it functions. Dani, Perry, and Greg talk about curiosity as it relates to both Perry's specialty area of Philosophy and Dani's specialty area of Neuroscience. They discuss lessons they learned from researching and writing their book and get into some of the discoveries they made inside. They talk about how people can be subdivided into busy bodies, hunters, and dancers and the traits of each. They discuss early school experiences that allowed them to chase and foster the power of curiosity in their own childhoods, and they touch on what a collective curiosity would entail. Episode Quotes:Curiosity is a connective process[Dani Bassett ] 06:39: We argue that it's that connective property of information gathering, information seeking that is what curiosity does. And it provides us with a full, interconnected knowledge base that allows us to reason from our past and make new decisions in the future. It allows us to understand the mental processes of another person, and it also allows us to connect among people themselves.[Perry Zurn] 47:01: Creativity along the way, as fundamental to what it means to be educated, would change the entire structure of education. The practices of attunement[Perry Zurn] 13:04: When we're curious, we direct our observational skills—our capacity to notice or be attuned to certain things or be attuned to particular dynamics, for example. That's something that's at the core of what curiosity does. That's how it does some of its connecting work. The role of a teacher in a child's curiosity[Dani Bassett ]13:04: Teachers are in this very tricky situation where they have an opportunity to model and to say, "Here, look at how my mind moves." You could try this too. And they also need to be quiet and not forecasting their own curiosity sometimes so that they can notice, hear, support, value, and encourage the kind of curiosity that the child has.Show Links:Recommended Resources:David Lydon-Staley, Ph.D.Center for the EdgeGuest Profile:Dani BassettFaculty Profile at University of PennsylvaniaFaculty Profile at Santa Fe InstituteDani Bassett on LinkedInDani Bassett on TwitterPerry ZurnFaculty Profile at American University Perry Zurn's WebsitePerry Zurn on LinkedInPerry Zurn on TwitterPerry Zurn & Dani S. James True has delved deeply into the engineered psyche of our species that is presently leading large swaths of the human collective in march-step precariously close to the cliff's edge.  An eclectic in the truest sense, part author-poet, wildlife activist & self-taught techie, whichever endeavor catches James interest is most definitely guided by the cosmic muse. In James provocative work Blueprints for Mind Control he accurately concludes awareness to be the only possible antidote for the induced maya of the controllers.  Be certain that we'll dissect the tools of the spellcraft trade, but central to our roundtable is that our mass-trauma is a 100% perception-based ailment. 28 days. 6 hours. 42 minutes. 12 seconds. That is when the world will end… according to Frank, the giant bunny rabbit. Closing out a run of spooky Halloween-themed episodes is the 2001 indie classic Donnie Darko. Is this film a muddled mess or an of-the-moment masterpiece? What can we make of the three seemingly conflicting threads that run through the movie—the science fiction, the vaguely religious, and the meditation on upper middle class suburban alienation? Do these thematic strings clash horribly, or are they inextricably intertwined? How do we make sense of an increasingly mad world through the eyes of Donnie? We meditate on the film’s carefully selected symbols and philosophical underpinnings to answer these questions and more. — Black Lives Matter. Our AI Futures series aims to share perspectives from those pushing the boundaries of technology, and this episode's discussion steps toward farther-out potential futures. Before founding the US Transhumanist Party, Zoltan earned a degree in Philosophy & Religion from Columbia University, worked as a reporter for National Geographic, and served as a Director for WildAid (a nonprofit protecting endangered species). In recent years, he's shifted his focus to authorship, speaking, and activism, with a focus toward the long-term future for humanity. His book, "The Transhumanist Wager," is an Amazon best-seller. This episode dives into perspectives pertinent to the future of AI governance e.g. dynamics of the USA-China AI race, the "winner-take-all" potential for powers controlling artificial general intelligence (AGI), and China's potential rise in an environment with fewer regulations and hurdles for transformational technologies like AGI, gene editing, and neurotech.

Welcome. Everything is fine. NBC’s acclaimed philosophical comedy The Good Place came to an end recently, and we’re here to discuss the emotional series finale and the lasting legacy of the show. Having finally reached the real Good Place, Eleanor, Chidi, Tahani, and Jason (along with architect Michael and not-a-girl/not-a-robot Janet) have overseen the creation of an entirely new afterlife system. In the finale, “Whenever You’re Ready,” the show grapples head-on with the most difficult questions of existence. What happens after we die? What does it mean to live a good and happy life? Can people really improve, and how? In this installment of the Midnight Myth, we’ll also grapple with these questions of morality, spirituality, and Maximum Derek. We’ll look for insight in Buddhism, Virgil’s The Aeneid, Aristotelian virtue ethics, and other tentpoles of moral philosophy. Will we find the forking answer to lasting peace? Maybe. But until then, take it sleazy. *Spoilers for Seasons 1-4 of The Good Place!* Support us at www.patreon.com/midnightmyth Check out our merch store for Midnight Myth, Boomerangerang, and Wheel of Ka tees and totes! I always learn something when I interview authors, but in this chat with Todd H. Weir I learned something startling: I’m a monist. What is more, you may be a monist too and not even know it. Do you believe that there is really only one kind of stuff and that everything we observe–and our powers of observation themselves–are made of that stuff? If so, you’re a monist. But what kind? As Todd explains, the history of monism is not monistic: since its birth in the nineteenth century, there have been multiple monisms (which, you must admit, is a diverting irony). You can read about many of them in Monism: Science, Philosophy, Religion, and the History of a Worldview (Palgrave, 2012), the edited volume Todd and I discuss in the interview. Despite their differences, all the monisms were radical, for they implied that there was no God and that religion was essentially an evolved superstition. This being so, monism was always controversial. It still is. Stephen J. Gould didn’t like it, but his colleague E.O. Wilson and most of the “New Atheists” do. Listen in and see where you stand. Hello Watchmen! It's time to gather for the Third Watch and share what we have been seeing! The subject for this Friday night is; Discordianism One of my friends who will be joining us on this week's show was involved in "Discordianism" and he is going to share with us what this is all about. If it sounds confusing, it is and that is the way "they" want it! I feel the media is engaging in this "strangeness" on a daily basis now more than ever. So please join the discussion with the watchmen on Third Watch and share what you see on the wall!
