In this episode of The Real ResQ Podcast, host Jason Quinn is joined by Danielle Snyder, a U.S. Forest Service Landscape Architect, volunteer firefighter, and member of the Search and Rescue (SAR) Team with the Sitka, Alaska Fire Department. Living in Sitka, Alaska, Snyder is a Coast Guard “Air Station Fan Girl”! She shares her experiences with search and rescue in Sitka, Alaska. She works with the local department, as well as the U.S. Coast Guard.   She recalls her first rescue, searching for an overdue kayaker, and the challenges of searching in the dark. She also discusses a memorable rescue on Bear Mountain, where she rappelled down the steep slope to rescue stranded hunters. The rescue lasted nearly 24 hours and involved navigating through dense vegetation and rappelling into a waterfall.  Next, we discuss a plane crash in downtown Sitka where the plane crashed into a house, but miraculously, the owner of the house had left just half an hour earlier. There is also a second story of a plane crash on a nearby mountain where the Coast Guard flew the SAR team up to the scene.  Snyder also shares the story of a team member who passed away while hiking on Mount Verstovia. She emphasizes the importance of mental health support for rescue teams and recommends resources like the Responder Alliance. She also recommends the book The Culture Code. The conversation ends on a positive note, highlighting the joy of helping others, the camaraderie within the team, and the importance of teamwork. In addition, there is a need for individuals to show up and be willing to do the job, regardless of their perceived weaknesses. Enjoy!   This episode is powered by Vertical HeliCASTS. In this episode of The Real ResQ, host Jason Quinn is joined by two firefighters from Essex County, United Kingdom. Tom Jewell and Rob Winger join Quinn to share experiences and stories from their time in the fire service. They discuss their backgrounds, including family connections to firefighting, and their journey to becoming firefighters.  Jewell retells the first two rescues that stand out to him. The first was a shipping container fire and his second was the stereotypical ‘cat stuck in a tree!' For Winger, the first two rescues that stand out were life lessons. The first was a fire where he had to search for a baby potentially located somewhere in the building. The second was a large fire in a flat where he had to pull a victim out of the building.   They also speak about their involvement in the International Search and Rescue Team, which responds to natural disasters around the world. Both Jewell and Winger continue to share memorable rescue stories. These include a rescue from a rolled over lorry, a rescue from a left-hand drive lorry, the clean-up process after a rescue, unusual callouts, international deployments, and logistics of deployments and rescue operations in Morocco. They tell all about the founding of The Soteria Group (TSG) and offer advice for young firefighters. At the end of the conversation, Jewell and Winger explain the importance of owning mistakes and recovering from them when they occur, as well as learning from others' experiences in the fire service. Investigators looking into the shocking death of 37-year-old Rachel Morin, have been tight-lipped on how the mom of five died, the type of injuries she sustained or whether she was fully clothed or not.  They're also pushing back on comments made by Michael Gabriszeski,  who claims that his stepdaughter,  Cecilia, found the body of Rachel Morin. Gabriszeski said that Cecilia saw Morin's body first and she began hyperventilating. He says police told Cecilia to sit down, and that she did, in a big pool of blood.   Gabriszeksi says  Morin was laying on her back, fully naked, and she had brutal head trauma. It looked like her head had been smashed with a rock.  The Hartford Sheriff's Office Spokesperson said of Gabriszeski, quote "He has no first-hand knowledge of the crime scene."
