In this episode, I speak with REWA, a remarkable artist whose work captures muses with gazes that invite and intimidate, drawing viewers into a regal, yet quietly commanding presence.Born and raised between Nigeria and England, REWA's art reflects her hybrid upbringing, embodying the modern 'Afropolitan' woman—progressive, self-aware, and deeply rooted in Igbo traditions. Her bold figurative portraits are not just artistic expressions but historical chronicles that blend the old with the modern.REWA's work transcends the typical boundaries of contemporary art, capturing the essence of Igbo culture and the evolution of Nigerian society. Her portraits explore themes of independence, tradition, and the dynamic roles of women celebrating the liberty of options. As our second interview Rewa shares her recent collaboration with Usher, her upcoming solo exhibition on Otu Odu women of Onicha. She shares insights into her evolving artistic style, and exhibition preparation involving research and family interactions, as she emphasizes the importance of documenting African culture through visual arts. Rewa explores the tradition of Otu Odu women's membership and its significance in society. Join us for the fantastic story of Hannah Davison who gave birth to six children on board the barque Alice A. Leigh (renamed Rewa in 1921), a steel barque which sailed the world between 1889-1930. The largest vessel ever built at Whitehaven in Cumbria, this four masted barque plied the world's sailing routes with a variety of cargo before joining a New Zealand wool merchant's fleet in 1921. Her story is particularly rich because of the family of Captain Davison who lived aboard. His wife Hannah was mother to their six children and kept a detailed scrapbook of their lives. Their large maritime family was well known and featured regularly in local newspapers. The scrapbook now survives in the collections of the New Zealand Maritime Museum/Hui te Ananui a Tang-aroa. Check out our YouTube page for a video exploring the life of the ship and the Davison family. Finally, damaged by a storm, the Alice A. Leigh/Rewa was sunk as a breakwater in Hauraki Gulf, Aukland, New Zealand where her semi-submerged wreck can still be easily seen and provides a tourist attraction for snorkelers and divers. Malcolm Rewa, after an almost unprecedented third trial, has been found guilty of murdering Susan Burdett in her South Auckland home in 1992.The jury took just under four hours to return their unanimous verdict today after hearing two weeks of evidence and arguments in the High Court at Auckland.Rewa will now be sentenced on March 26.Burdett was raped and bludgeoned to death in her Papatoetoe house. After some 27 years, 12 New Zealanders today said her killer was Rewa.Infamously, the Crown had also prosecuted Teina Pora for the accounts clerk's murder. When just 17 years old, Pora was arrested and later twice wrongly convicted for murdering Burdett. Also today, a rugby coach has been jailed on 95 charges of sexually abusing young boys. And, we remember the Christchurch earthquake, eight years on.Hosted by Juliette SivertsenSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Malcolm Rewa has gone on trial today - charged for the third time with killing Auckland woman Susan Burdett 27 years ago.Chief High Court judge, Justice Geoffrey Venning, acknowledged many in the jury would have heard parts of the case before, particularly because of the high-profile connection to Teina Pora. The case found infamy when Teina Pora was twice wrongly convicted for murdering Burdett. He spent 22 years in prison before the Privy Council quashed his conviction in 2015 and has since received an apology from the Government and $3.5 million in compensation.A stay of proceedings for a murder prosecution against Rewa was applied by the Solicitor-General in 1998, but in 2017 the Deputy Solicitor-General, on behalf of the Attorney-General, reversed the stay.A stay had never before been lifted in New Zealand's legal history. And new hope on day seven of the Nelson fires, as Wakefield residents are allowed back into their homes.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
"There are still wild, pristine places in the world"– Oliver White Today's guest on the Art of Adventure is the fishing legend, thought leader, owner of Bair's and Abaco Fishing lodges, and co-founder of Indifly, Oliver White. Oliver has carved a unique place for himself in the fishing world, as he is known for going to far off places and catching fish that have never been caught before. Now, after twenty years, after fishing and traveling the world, I've fished so many days, so I've read so many books I have filed away in this library. And every day that I go out, I have more information to pull out to help solve the next problem, and then build on that.” – Oliver White “Part of the enjoyment (of fishing) is solving the puzzle.” – Oliver White “It's always the hindsight, the looking back, where you can really understand the value of various experiences.” – Oliver White “As I look back in my whole life now, the things that I think are really important are passionate people who are interesting people. And it really doesn't matter what they are passionate about.” – Oliver White “No one in their life gets to where they are on their own.” – Oliver White “Being genuinely interested in other people helps facilitate a lot of things.” – Oliver White “I also find incredible value from this array of experiences that are available by being nomadic and bouncing and adapting all the time.” – Oliver White “It is unique to pursue something you are really excited about.” – Oliver White “It is important to be an advocated for the things that you find are important.” – Oliver White Continue the Adventure: Oliver White Fishing Oliver on Instragram Abaco Lodge Bair's Lodge
Hunger is being used as a weapon in the sieges of places like Aleppo, Homs and Eastern Ghouta in Syria. There have been food blockades in Yemeni ports. In the 1930’s Joseph Stalin used hunger to starve the Ukrainian nation. That starvation of millions to death has a name: Holodomor.
