Send us a textIn this episode of The Small Nonprofit Podcast, Maria chats with Rhea Wong, a major gift fundraising expert and former nonprofit Executive Director, about building trust with major donors, consent-based fundraising, and the shifting philanthropic landscape. Rhea shares her experience navigating donor relationships, building trust, and tips for creating a successful major gifts program. Key Topics Covered: Building trust in major gift fundraising Consent-based fundraising Navigating difficult conversations with donors Empathy and understanding generational differences Starting a major gifts program Quotable Quotes: "Fundraising is not about closing gifts; it's about opening relationships." - Rhea Wong"You need to ask for consent before you consider someone a prospect. Just because you have their contact information doesn't mean they're ready to give." - Rhea WongActionable Tips: ➜ Ask for consent: Before considering someone as a major gift prospect, ensure you have their consent to engage in deeper conversations. Use surveys and personal interactions to learn about their interests and how they'd like to be involved. ➜ Treat donors as partners: Build relationships based on trust and transparency. Engage donors as equal partners in your mission, focusing on long-term relationships rather than one-time transactions. ➜ Have tough conversations: Don't shy away from discussing difficult topics like systemic issues or organizational challenges. Addressing these openly can deepen donor trust and lead to stronger partnerships. ➜ Start with strong annual giving: Before jumping into major gift fundraising, ensure your annual donor program is solid. This will give you a foundation of consistent support and help identify engaged donors who could become major prospects. ➜ Be intentional and proactive: Approach donor relationships with a clear plan. Define what an ideal major gift partnership looks like for your organization and communicate that vision early in conversations with donors. Resources Mentioned: Rhea Wong's Website Get That Money, Honey: The No-BS Guide to Raising Money for Your Nonprofit. Rhea Wong's Ways To Work with Me Quiz Connect with Us: Connect with Maria Rio Connect with Rhea Wong Subscribe and Review: Don't forget to subscribe to The Small Nonprofit Podcast on your favorite platform! But COVID forced us to rethink that — and that opened up so many opportunities for innovation." – Kamilah Martin "Innovation for innovation's sake isn't enough. What are your goals? How do you evaluate if your pilot actually achieves what you want?" – Kamilah Martin "Nonprofits that innovate now will thrive in the next 20 years. Those that don't will get left behind." – Kamilah Martin Actionable Tips: ➜ Embrace Flexible Work Models: Involve program and admin staff in discussions on remote work equity, and find ways to offer flexibility, even to those in roles requiring in-person work (e.g., alternating schedules). ➜ Pilot Innovations with Clear Goals: Establish a finite timeline for pilots with an evaluation period at the end to determine if adjustments are needed. ➜ Leverage External Expertise: Don't try to solve complex problems alone—engage consultants or experts in areas like change management, technology, or HR for quicker solutions. Connect with Us: Connect with Maria Connect with Kamilah The Katalyst Website  Subscribe and Review: Don't forget to subscribe to The Small Nonprofit Podcast on your favorite platform. Rhea helps non-profits raise more money. Though she has deep experience with institutional, corporate, and event fund-raising, she is passionate about major individual donors and helping organizations to establish individual giving programs. She has raised millions of dollars in private philanthropy and is passionate about building the next generation of fundraising leaders. She has become a leader in the New York nonprofit community and is a frequent educational commentator in the media. She has been recognized with the SmartCEO Brava Award in 2015 and NY Nonprofit Media's 40 under 40 in 2017. Key Takeaways:Stay sovereign and hold your value no matter what the outcome is. Who you are creates what you do and not the other way around. Hold on to your inherent value as a human being and remember that you cannot change other people's minds. The primary role of an executive director is to be the chief fundraiser. If you are an Executive Director, you've got to note what are the things that are taking up your time and see which of these can be delegated so that you can focus on fundraising. Don't waste your time trying to persuade people to care about your cause or perfecting your pitch. People partner with organizations that they trust and that care about things that they care about. There's no magical “development fairy”. If you're hiring a development director, that means that you are committing to fundraising more while your development director gets rid of all the obstacles. The purpose of all that is for you to focus on the most important things.  “What you have is who you are in your being and from the being you do things. But whether or not the results or the outcomes come in the way that you want, it doesn't mean that you are less than or more than.” “Executive directors are the chief fundraisers. As executive directors you are the face of the brand, you are the spokesperson for the organization. If you are not actively fundraising, I would say you're probably not doing your job.” “Now, I don't know about you, but I've never given off the back of someone's magical words. I've given because it's a cause I care about, [or] because somebody I love has asked me to give. A pitch has never done it for me.” - Rhea Wong Reach out to Rhea Wong at:Website: https://www.rheawong.com/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/rheawong/ Ask for and receive all you want, need and deserve without feeling rejected, ineffective, or pushy. Rhea shares how as a comedian she had an audience of just her family and parents and told sex jokes and it bombed in a big way. But even with this low moment, Rhea was able to shake it off and continue to get back on stage. Rhea's ability to shake off mistakes is one of her super powers she has used throughout her career as Executive Director of Breakthrough New York and now a leader in the New York nonprofit community helping nonprofits raise money.  How does Rhea pick herself up and continue to get back on stage and toot her horn? There are 7 steps: Step 1: Get out of your head and stop replaying the moment We're either in survival or executive mode, and most of the time (70%) in survival mode. Get out of this mode by taking a breath and finding space to disrupt the narrative. Step 2: Name the feeling. Not, “I am stressed” but “I feel stressed.” Step 3: Feel the feeling in your body.  For example, sadness can feel like a heaviness in the heart. Anger can be accompanied by a tension in the arms, neck, or shoulders.  Step 4: Check your assumptions - is it true that everyone will think you're a failure? Step 5: Practice self-compassion. Ask yourself, “Would you let anyone talk to your best friend the way that you are talking to yourself?” Step 6: Keep putting yourself out there.  Orientation is not, “I'm great,” or “I'm the best.” Instead, it's about helping people. “I've figured out some things and can share.” Let go of people saying no. ”If you're not interested, that's ok.”  You have no control over other people. And if they are not kind to you, then they aren't your people or people you should care about. Step 7: Know that your value is derived not by what you do or your work (which leads to overworking) but you have value just by being you.    Get full show notes and more information here:  https://analizawolf.com/ep-47-how-to-toot-your-horn-rhea-wong-founder-of-rhea-wong-consulting

Rhea, a leading nonprofit consultant, reveals the exact methodology she used to transform Breakthrough New York from a meager $200,000 nonprofit into a multi-million-dollar organization. The secret is fairly simple: the right mindset, the right systems, and the right strategies. If you've struggled to raise money for your nonprofit, it's not your fault. You've probably been stuck in this loop: You believe you don't know how to raise money, so you feel like you can't do it (and you don't invest in the right systems), and the result is a self-fulfilling prophecy—you can't seem to raise money. The good news is this is a fixable problem. You'll learn the best strategies, thought work, and nonprofit-specific processes that will attract transformative dollars to your organization. Rhea is renowned for her ability to teach everyone—from fresh-faced founders to seasoned EDs—something about raising money. She draws from her 20+ years as a multi-million-dollar fundraiser and offers selective access to her coaching program, The Fundraiser Accelerator for the first time. Podcaster, author and comedian Rhea Wong joins Purposely to share her fascinating story. Rhea Wong grew up in the Bay Area of San Francisco, relocating to the East Coast of America to start her first non-profit leadership role at 26. Thrown in at the deep end, without experience, Rhea had to learn fast. 'I was like, what? My first two Google searches in the job were, ‘what does an executive director do?' and the second was, ‘how to fundraise'. I like that I was that clueless.' Fast forward to today, Rhea is one of the leading voices on fundraising for non-profits globally. Her teaching focuses on developing the right mindset, rather than just teaching income generation tactics. Rhea has caught the attention of the fundraising sector for her insightful thinking around mindset, in particular her theory on 'scarcity and abundance' as a common block for any non-profit fundraiser. 'When we come from a place of confidence and expectation that there is enough money out there for us to do our work, and to feel the change that we've seen in the world, we operate on a different level' At first Rhea struggled with fundraising, she was good at it but found it 'joyless'. She examined the mental blocks and negative outlook to try and understand her resistance to fundraising . Rhea reflected on her childhood experiences around money and charity. She remembers vividly an experience that helped shape her, ' I gave a homeless guy a quarter in front of my father and he goes, Oh, so you're so rich. now you can just give money away.' The moment impacting her psyche deeply, the idea that money is scarce and that we have to hold on to it and guard it. Her grandparent's experience leaving communist China and arriving in the United States with very little money had a significant impact on her parent's mindset. This had also shaped her own outlook to giving and charity. 'Money stood for stability and security, because that's what they needed when they came to this country, all they had was $20 in their pocket when they arrived.' Over time and following a period of reflection and introspection Rhea developed a for her profession, the joy of making the ask and raising vital funds for good causes started to make sense. This clarity led her on a new career path, from being a fundraiser herself to helping others be better fundraisers. Rhea shares her move from non-profit executive to launching her own business helping others to reach their full potential as fundraisers. Rhea works with individuals and organisations, and she has particular expertise in institutional, corporate and major donor fundraising. Importantly she knows what it's like to be a successful fundraiser herself raising millions for good causes and she is well placed to coach and advise others. In 2022 Rhea Wong published the book 'Get That Money! The No B******t Guide To Raising More Money For Your Non-Profit'. The book, despite its relatively racy headline, is focused on the importance of relationship-based fundraising and the antithesis of the transactional approach so often used. 'The name of the book was really about getting people's attention. I think it's very aligned with my brand which is pretty irreverent. I'm not a very formal person and I like to make jokes, obviously. I like to not take it so seriously. But it is about how do you really build relationships such that you can get that money honey?' Rhea has also published over 200 episodes of her Podcast Non-profit Lowdown reviewing and recommending the best ideas, resources, tools and tricks to run a non-profit, using her own lived experiences as well as her guests. We delve into her approach to work, her confidence, her drive and how she doesn't take herself too seriously. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mark-longbottom2/message

#051 - Rhea Wong makes a return trip to the Groupfinity Podcast, this time to discuss her new book - Get That Money, Honey! The No-Bullsh*t Guide to Raising More Money for Your Nonprofit.  Rhea points out that that mindset is a big limiting factor in fundraising.  We assume people will only give the minimum and we get too emotional about rejection, which impacts our ongoing fundraising efforts."I think people get so emotionally tied up in that if they don't give to my organization, that means all these bad things about me and I'm somehow inferior and less than, and blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. It's like, okay, let's just drop the story.  AND how could we do our job better without this disempowering story?"Storytelling is a key to your fundraising success because we all want to believe that our lives have meant something.  We all want to think about legacy and believe we lived on the planet and the world is a little bit better. You need to help your donor see themself as the hero in the story.  They are the hero, not you.Rhea tells why investing in systems is so important.  We're always freaking out about money and not spending it and we end up missing the forest for the trees.  Think about how to automate your organization to make you more efficient rather than just the amount of the expense itself.“If I spend money, it's either going to be because there's a monetary ROI, so it's gonna help me bring more money in, or It's going to give me back my time, or it's going to increase operational efficiency. If the expense that you're putting out doesn't do one of those three things, I think you really need to think about your expense.”The key takeaways from my discussion with Rhea are:#1 Evaluate your systems by mapping your processes to where the problems exist;#2 In Fundraising a story is important because it accesses the empathy part of our brain. And empathy is where generosity lies;#3 Don't spend your time doing stupid manual things like data entry. Spend the time creating relationships with humans; and#4 Your meetings should be 75% of them talking, 25% you talking.Be sure to stick around until the end to hear what Rhea learned from an FBI hostage negotiator.

#037 - Today I am speaking with Rhea Wong.  Rhea is a New York based nonprofit consultant who trains nonprofit leaders to fundraise more money from high-net worth donors.  At the age of 26, she became the Executive Director of a nonprofit with a $250k budget.  The first day on the job, she Googled 2 things - 1)  what does an Executive Director do and 2) how to fundraise? Rhea did something right - very right.  In her 12 years as the ED of that nonprofit, she grew that $250k budget into over $3 million through private philanthropy. “So I'd figured out the foundations, the corporations, the events, the individuals and the one area that I thought had the most potential for growth were the major gift individuals.  When we look at the pie of philanthropic gifts, nationally, the biggest chunk of the pie are individuals.  They're responsible for upwards of like $350 billion or something.  So many nonprofits focus on, you know, the grants and like corporate sponsorships or whatever. It's really about the people.”After working on projects for her ED friends, she decided to focus on major gift fundraising because that is where people had the most anxiety.Be sure to stick around until the end to hear all of Rhea's great dating analogies for fundraising.Check out Rhea at - https://www.rheawong.com/The key takeaways from my discussion with Rhea are:#1 Think of fundraising like a party and you just want to see who wants to come to your party;#2 Don't think you are taking something away from donors - you are inviting them to be part of something special;#3 Fundraising is just a math problem - offers minus no's equals yeses. So the more you ask, the more nos you're going to get, but the more yeses you're going to get;#4 If everybody's your donor, then nobody is your donor.Check out Groupfinity.com for the show notes and links for this episode.

And yet it's the undercard of everything that we do.

Major gift fundraising can be very intimidating for so many small organizations. Oftentimes we think we don't know anyone who can give, or we think of a major gift as a hundred thousand dollars where very often it can be 500 or a thousand dollars for your organization. But I think the most intimidating part of major gift fundraising is the idea of a face-to-face ask that gets people running and hiding. I think that is truly the number one thing that many people think of as the worst part of fundraising. In today's podcast, Rhea Wong, experienced nonprofit consultant and coach, will talk about how you can make bigger asks for bigger gifts to fully fund your small nonprofit's vision and mission. Myths that  Rhea wants us to walk away from:You can ask anyone to give. Building a relationship with donors is a process. To determine whether they align with your organization's mission, you must first identify and understand the type of person you are approaching, their capacity to give and know their values and interests. Only rich people have the capacity to give.  Rhea suggests that the best way to know whether someone is inclined to give to you is to simply ask.  Just because someone has a hundred million dollars doesn't mean they're going to give you a hundred million dollars. These donors could give you a thousand or five hundred dollars if your mission does not resonate with them.Rhea's thoughts around major gift fundraisingFundraising is just a math problem.  It's asks minus no's equal yeses. The more asks you put out, the more nos you're going to get, but the more yeses you're going to get.  Learn to listen. In conversations with donors, remember the 75:25 ratio, where 75% donors talking and 25% you listening. People who are nervous about money, about the conversation, they overtalk, they create a deck as a crutch but there's no substitute for being present and being vulnerable and asking really good questions to people. Give value. Every time you talk to someone and you're asking them for something, you're probably not going to get callbacks. But you can cultivate a relationship where you are also offering value and that could be in the form of companionship, giving information, opportunity to get more engaged or involved in a meaningful volunteer experience. Every meeting should be about engaging further, but that engaging further, it doesn't have to be about them giving it can also be about you giving.Favourite Quotes from Today's Episode“ I build a whole business around major gift fundraising training, and I'm like, here's the big secret you guys, I'm training you to have a conversation. That's the secret. Like, it's not like some deck, it's not magical words. It's not like anything other than like, can I as a human being have, sit with you and understand who you are as a human being. And see if the thing that you care about is the thing that we're doing. And if so, can we build something together? Like, that's it, that's the big secret, right? ”Resources from this EpisodeRhea Wong ConsultingThe Good PartnershipJoin Keela with special guest (and former podcast guest) Omar Visram, of Enkel Backoffice Solutions for a FREE webinar on March 15: Year-end Nonprofit Accounting In A Covid World To sign up (and learn more about Keela), visit: https://bit.ly/smallnonprofitpodcastSupport the show (https://paypal.me/smallnonprofit)

Studies have shown that as much as 88% of a nonprofit's donated funds come from just 12% of their donors. That trend is only increasing, as a larger portion of all donations is coming from high-net-worth individuals. Each nonprofit might define a major gift at a different level based on their budget, but the need to cultivate and maintain relationships with major gift donors is undeniable. Unlike clearly defined grant applications or other sources of funding, donors are individuals without instruction manuals, and they want to be treated as such (and not as checkbooks). How can a nonprofit fundraiser identify prospective major gift donors and what does it take to build a relationship? Major gift fundraising consultant Rhea Wong teaches people how to (and how to love) major gift fundraising. She believes it comes down to having a system and developing a curiosity mindset, and she joins us this episode to lay out an effective approach to both. ** Episode Links and Shownotes: https://nphf.show/ep33 ** What we'll be discussing: • Why focusing on high-net-worth individuals is not as hard as it might sound • What is considered a major gift for a nonprofit • How to identify and qualify major gift prospects • What to put in your Major Gift Donor avatar • How to treat major-gift donors as people with curiosity • Building relationships with donors • Stewarding donors after a gift • Becoming a Curious Chameleon

Do you ever feel icky asking for money - or just downright scared? Does this prevent you from raising the amount of money you need for your nonprofit? There may be emotional and mental blocks that hold you back from being an effective fundraiser. In this episode, Rhea Wong joins me to drop some "truth bombs" about fundraising mindset and gives us some strategies to help us get over the limiting beliefs, assumptions, and stories that are holding us back from reaching our true potential.  Over a 12 year period as the Executive Director of Breakthrough New York, Rhea grew their fundraising program from about 200K per year to $3M in 100% private donations annually.  This included funding from institutional foundations, corporations, events, and individuals. Rhea made all the mistakes so you don't have to. Now she is on a quest to teach others what it takes to succeed - because the world cannot wait for important change.  Rhea's e-newsletter is one that I read every single week (check it out for adorable photos of her lasa apso Stevie Wonderdog), and her podcast and free weekly trainings are a must-have resource for fundraisers. Here are some of the topics we discussed: Why major gift fundraising sounds so scary - but it's simpler than you thinkWhy she is on a mission to destroy "the pitch"Fundraising a just a math problem How to determine if you are an Asker or a GuesserThe limiting beliefs, assumptions, and stories holding us back from raising more money A Rhea Wong quotable: "It's only weird if you make it weird." This week, I'm joined by Rhea Wong, my long-time friend, and multi-time guest on the podcast. Rhea and I talk all the time about the work that we each do supporting and coaching small nonprofits in the areas of fundraising and strategy, and occasionally we hit on a topic that gets us really excited. This is one of those topics: the messy and complicated relationship between fundraising and founders. We found ourselves talking about the oh-so-common situation that many EDs who take over from founders find themselves in in the early months of their new tenure -- the “robust” funding base of donors and supporters that they believed they were receiving,  are not there. I work with a lot of founders, and so I was really excited to talk with Rhea about how a leader can avoid this situation - what someone can do LONG before it's a problem - to be intentional about their fundraising base and build a strong infrastructure that won't collapse when they leave. The process of intentional fundraising begins years before a founder leaves, and Rhea and I have a blast discussing, debating, and even sometimes commiserating in our memory of our ED days.

And now, we are accountability partners - we get to hang out every week - share goals, push each other, coach one another, advise each other on our work and businesses - we're still figuring it all out as we go along and it's both loads of fun and extremely helpful to me as a professional.   As part of one of our conversations, we found ourselves reflecting on our past lives as founders and EDs, and the journey that we went on to grow our organizations and to become the people who could lead increasingly bigger, more impactful organizations. We wanted to share our insights and strategies with you. Resources Mentioned: Fundraising Accelerator: www.rheawong.comE Myth RevisitedMiracle Equation
