My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Leslie K Simmons, author of the book Red Clay, Running Waters. Leslie K. Simmons writes about extraordinary people at the center of crucial turning points in American history. She is particularly fascinated by outliers and the lesser known (but no less incredible) stories that slip through history's cracks. After decades of research, she followed a path marked by serendipities to the true story of John and Sarah Ridge and her debut novel, Red Clay, Running Waters. In my book review, I stated Red Clay, Running Waters is a masterful account of John Ridge, a Cherokee statesman and his wife, Sarah Northrop. Simmons' research is phenomenal and gives readers a glimpse into what it was like as Georgia tried to force the Cherokee from its borders. Quite honestly, I had trouble reading and could only take the novel in small doses. Not because of the writing - which was flawless - but because of what I learned about how my government treated the Cherokee - lying, slandering, stealing, and killing. In addition to the heartless treatment of a great People, the book also looks at love. The relationship between Sarah and John is beautiful, though in no way perfect. Despite having continual trials, this couple found a way to keep moving forward. It certainly gave me hope. This is not a book for the faint of heart, but one that should be on everyone's TBR list. In the late nineteenth century modern postal systems were still coming into their own. Around the turn of the century, many countries, including England, began issuing Christmas themed postage stamps. You might think that America would have been among them, but boy would you be wrong. In fact, America was one of the last countries to get on board. American Christmas stamps are only a few decades old. And the story there has to do with simple economics and America's system of government. In today's episode, we explore the therapeutic application of DMT across a range of diseases and conditions including Alzheimer's, stroke, and organ transplants. “High mountains and running waters” (高山流水) is one of the most iconic pieces of classical Chinese music. Its creator played it so beautifully, it was as if he could create this scenery out of thin air. Alas, his story has a tragic end, but before we get to that, in this episode on the Three Character Classic (三字经) we'll tell you about the natural materials used to make the eight sounds (八普) of ancient Chinese instruments: gourd (匏), clay (土), leather (革), wood (木), stone (石), metal (金), silk (丝), and bamboo (竹). The三字经 was written by the Song Dynasty (宋朝) scholar Wang Yinglin (王应麟). This 1,134 character text was one of the first textbooks used by students, and provided lessons on education, morality and ethics, science, literature, and history.

Me ajude a fazer o podcast crescer e ter continuidade. Earlier this year, paediatric nurse Johanna Bosowski embarked on her first mission with Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders (MSF) to Agok, in northern South Sudan. Working on the neonatal ward, she encountered a young patient with a disease she had never seen in the UK before. In most developed countries, thanks to a vaccine, cases of tetanus are extremely rare. But, in 2013 (the latest year for which estimates are available), it still killed roughly 59,000 people around the world - many of whom wouldn’t have had access to the vaccine. Listen to the eighth episode of Everyday Emergency to find out how Johanna's young patient fought the infection, and more about Johanna's time in Agok. Read more about Johanna's mission to South Sudan on her blog: blogs.msf.org/en/staff/authors/johanna-bosowski "Everyday Emergency" is a podcast from MSF. In each episode, we bring you true stories from the frontline of humanitarian emergencies across the world. From the conflict in Syria to the refugee crisis in Europe, we’ll be talking to people with some incredible stories that may just change your outlook on life, or at least, for a moment, put things into perspective. In each podcast you’ll hear a true story written by an MSFer on the ground, read by an actor. We’ll then get them into the studio at MSF HQ for a chat about their time with MSF.
