This week in reruns, we go way back to our first season and two rock stars of television: Jana Schmieding and Sierra Teller Ornelas. We had tons of fun visiting with these two talented ladies. Enjoy!
Over the last 30 years, there has been an exponential growth of Indigenous media and Indigenous media makers, especially here in Canada which has one of the largest repositories of Indigenous media. However, the road to get here hasn't been easy. Indigenous filmmakers, producers, and artists have had to navigate the complex and often unfriendly terrain of Canadian media institutions and media production companies. Their negotiations -- and struggles -- have helped make space for a generation of Indigenous media-makers who are increasingly making shows and films on their terms, with their ideas.Karrmen Crey who is Stó:lō from Cheam First Nation, is an associate professor in the School of Communication at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, British Columbia, and the author of “Producing Sovereignty: The Rise of Indigenous Media in Canada.” In this special episode, recorded on-site with an audience in Vancouver at Iron Dog books, Karrmen speaks with Vinita about the ways Indigenous creators are using humour along with a sharp critique of pop culture to show just how different the world looks when decision-making power over how stories get told shifts and Indigenous media makers take control. This episode was produced in front of a live audience at Iron Dog Books in Vancouver, in partnership with Simon Fraser University's Faculty of Communication, Art and Technology and the Amplify Podcast Network. Simon Fraser student, Natalie Dusek performed tech duties. Theme music by Zaki Ibrahim, Something in the Water.Image credit: Jana Schmieding plays Reagan, a member of the fictional Minishonka nation, on the sitcom, Rutherford Falls. Aho, podcast listeners! To celebrate Native American Heritage Month, Paul and Arlo check in on the latest season of Reservation Dogs, possibly the best show on TV. It would be hard to top Rez Dog's freshman year, a revelatory season filled with joy, pain, and a whole bunch of shitasses. Yet that's exactly what Sterlin Harjo and his collaborators have done, deepening the themes of loss and community that made the first season so resonant. The boys rave about the show's core cast–Devery Jacobs, D'Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai, Lane Factor, and Paulina Alexis—while lauding Harjo's ability to shine an even brighter light on supporting players like Zahn McClarnon, Jana Schmieding, and Lily Gladstone. During the interview, Jana also reflects on some of her favorite memories from attending the University of Oregon, her experience navigating Hollywood as a Native woman, and the importance of opening doors for women of color in the entertainment industry. Join Paul G for a conversation with writer and star of Rutherford Falls Jana Schmieding. Rutherford Falls,” Peacock TV‘s binge-worthy new show, manages to do something few ever have: bring multi-dimensional indigenous characters into an American sitcom. While Native Americans have historically been portrayed as monolithic in American film and TV, “Rutherford Falls” breaks the mold, taking Native Americans out of the box they're so often forced into. But beyond that, the show's just downright brilliant. Created by Michael Schur (“The Office,” “Parks and Recreation,” and “Brooklyn Nine Nine”), Ed Helms, and Sierra Teller Ornelas (Navajo-Mexican), “Rutherford Falls” is equal parts clever and heartwarming and provides two unique perspectives of the Native American experience.

The Peacock sitcom Rutherford Falls, which follows a conflict over a historical statue in a small town, is notable for a few reasons, besides its timely topic. It's the latest project from Mike Schur and it marks Ed Helms' return to TV. But it also centers several Native American characters (played by Jana Schmieding and Michael Greyeyes), boasts what NBCUniversal claims is "one of the largest Indigenous writer's rooms on television," and is led by co-creator Sierra Teller Ornelas, who is the first Native American showrunner of a television comedy.
During a visit to Great White Shark Cafe, Peter faces off with a fearsome shark (Jana Shmieding). Featuring two new stories: “The Missing Golden Eggs,” a country tune about a desperate goose who jumps to conclusions too easily, written by a Sophie, an 8 year old from Maryland, and “The Super Secret Sassy Story,” the wildest story about writer’s block you’ve ever heard, written by two siblings from New York named Francis, age 12, and Olivia, age 9. We find actor, comedian, and writer Jana Schmieding (@janaunplgd) in a part of the vault where the buffalo roam, which (spoiler) we learn IS VERY INACCURATE in regard to the plot of this movie. On today's episode I talk to comedian and actor Jana Schmieding. Originally from Oregon, Jana cut her teeth performing sketch, improv and characters at the Magnet Theater in New York City. After moving to Los Angeles in 2016, Jana started the Woman of Size podcast, which she hosted until 2019, and most recently, she writes on and co-stars with Ed Helms in Peacock's newest sitcom Rutherford Falls, which debuts on the streaming network next Friday! This is the website for Beginnings, subscribe on Apple Podcasts, follow me on Twitter.
Cinematographer Ross Riege’s new TV series project RUTHERFORD FALLS will debut on Peacock on April 22. Ross developed an elevated, cinematic look, more common in films and prestige dramas than comedy series. He shot in large format (which is very unusual for a comedy) with the ARRI Alexa Mini LF. Co-created by actor Ed Helms, producer Michael Schur and Superstore writer and Navajo, Sierra Teller Ornelas, Rutherford Falls is a comedy about best friends played by Helms and Jana Schmieding, who are both deeply invested in the cultural history of their small town. The series also represents a huge breakthrough in Native representation, with a Native series lead (Schmieding) and regular, as well as one of largest Indigenous rooms on television, with five Native writers including co-creator Ornelas. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/followingfilms/support

In this week’s episode, we focus on continuing our focus on anti-racism and the alliances that Black and Indigenous people can make during these momentous times. Up first, Jana Schmieding interviews Black Pamunkey writer, producer, and performer, Azie Dungey, to discuss how Black liberation and Native justice movements are directly linked. Azie breaks down the origins of anti-Blackness in her tribal history and how the insidiousness of anti-Blackness manifests in her life today. Then we listen to a segment of IllumiNative’s recent virtual national town hall and how we focus efforts on building a multiracial movement for justice and equity. And Heather Rae provides an update on efforts focused on the renaming of an offensive street name in Santa Barbara, California, and why this type of narrative change is so important. The elusive Sasquatch has entranced a nation with it's grainy videos and big ol' footprints. But where did Bigfoot come from? Are there multiple Bigfeet? And if the Bigfeet have always been with us, what did the people who lived here before European colonization think about them? This week we're joined by host of the Woman of Size podcast Jana Schmieding, who's asking the important questions. We talk about ambiguous poo piles, white neighbors, and how America can start decolonizing its cryptids. Get ready to LEARN, honey!
A woman wrote an article on Huffington Post about being kicked off the Harry potter ride at Universal Studios for being too fat. It is the funniest thing I have ever seen. Jana Schmieding is a whiny, corpulent, feminist, and most importantly according to her, NATIVE AMERICAN "comedian" who decided to start reading Harry Potter at THIRTY-FIVE YEARS OLD. We explore her claims of Indian ancestry and reveal more of her pathetic life. Yes, more pathetic than being too fat to ride a children's amusement ride. Out of every race on Earth no one has had it as hard as The Native Americans. They received maybe the worst genocide this world has ever seen, yet they still have resolve, honor, and respect. Let's examine what has happened to these people. They have been through so much we could not unpack it all in one episode, in PT 1 we talk their plight when the Spanish Inquisition came to America, how to talk to someone who descends from that culture, and what it's like now for Native Americans. Joining Amber and Ed is Lakota Sioux comedian Jana Schmieding. Also taking us out this week is a song from Mel Brooks' History of the World Part 1. "The Spanish Inquisition"
