Reduced Shakespeare Company Podcast

Reed Martin has written Harpo and Chico and Bill, a new comedy about Harpo Marx, his son Bill, and Harpo's brother Chico as they try to put one final live stage show together late in their careers. Written during the pandemic, Reed's play is is now having its world premiere (under his direction) at San Joaquin Delta College in Stockton. Reed discusses how the script came to be, how it's evolving with his all-student cast, and where it might go from here; how he got to meet Harpo's son Bill; how Reed exaggerated the drama (but only a little); how you can't find a single person who has a bad word to say about Harpo; the importance of family both onstage and off; and how Reed's performing the public service of introducing a new generation to classic comedians and timeless bits. Akilah Jeffery, aka A.A. Jeffery, aka Dr. Jeffery, aka Ms. Jeffery….that’s right! This teacher has worn and still wears a couple of hats. She is an Oakland, CA native who was raised in a family of educators. Growing up, she remembers being in her parents’ classrooms, even sometimes helping out with setting up lessons and organizing graded work. Even during her undergrad at UC Berkeley she continued to work in K-6 classrooms as a classroom aid. She also eventually took part time work as a substitute teacher. But when it came time to choose a career, she wanted to pursue something outside of what she considered her parents’ interest. So she went back to school to become a lawyer. Originally believing she would pursue a concentration in music law, she attended Vanderbilt University and found herself immersed in a vivacious music scene….did I forget to mention that Ms. Jeffery is also a bit of a musician herself? She strongly believes that art and music education had an enormous impact on her success growing up. Having gotten her music fix in Nashville, she finished law school and moved to Seattle where she found herself working in immigration law instead. She found working with immigrant families meaningful and necessary, but also mentally and emotionally exhausting. In her spare time (which she had very little of) she volunteered in a middle school Social Studies class and she realized that she may have been wrong about her place in education. It wasn’t that education in general wasn’t “her thing” but that she had limited her experiences to the elementary classroom. Being in a single-subject classroom was a whole different vibe. She came home to Oakland and pursued her single-subject credential in Social Studies and found a job as a middle school Social Studies teacher at American Indian Public Charter. She loved her job and she even won teacher-of-the-year in her first year at that school. Skyrocketing housing costs caused Ms. Jeffery to leave living in the Bay Area and ultimately her job at American Indian and that is how she has ended up here in Stockton. She has been working at Lincoln High School ever since her move and still loves her job although she misses her former school and the city that raised her. She also teaches law classes in the afternoon at San Joaquin Delta College and has recently written a middle school fantasy novel under the pen name A.A. Jeffery. “Wilda Silva Secret Keeper is a fun, illustrated middle grade novel fantasy about a girl who moves to the Pacific Northwest and finds herself in the midst of a power struggle between fairy courts.” The character Wilda Silva was inspired by fellow teacher Jilliane Gravelle, who one day lamented to Ms. Jeffery about being stereotyped as a wild child for having bright red hair. (Hi Jilliane, we’d love to have you on the show!) Ms. Jeffery’s website www.wildasilva.com is coming soon with more information about publishing dates and where you can get your copy.

Dr. Alfredo Quiñones-Hinojosa’s journey from migrant farm worker to brain surgeon is one that conjures inspiration, and an appreciation for hard work and dedication.  On the night of on January 2, 1987, Dr. Q jumped the fence from Mexico to the United States not once, but twice. He made his way to the San Joaquin Valley so he could financially help himself and his family.  After a year as a farm worker, Dr. Q reached the pinnacle of what a farm worker could achieve in the fields—but he knew he could accomplish more. He knew that an education would introduce a world outside of farm work.  He joined the rest of his family in Stockton, California and he enrolled at San Joaquin Delta College. Within two years, Dr. Q was a student at UC Berkeley.  While on campus, Dr. Q realized that as a kid he was surrounded by natural healers in his family and that the joy that came from helping others was part of his DNA. He made the decision to become a doctor—Harvard Medical School was his next destination.  One night while roaming the hospital corridors as a student, Dr. Q was unexpectedly invited to observe a brain surgery in which the patient would be awake. That experience solidified what his soul had been seeking his whole life: he was meant to become a neurosurgeon.  Dr. Q’s path to neurosurgery lead him to do his residency at the University of California, San Francisco, where he discovered that being a brain surgeon wasn’t enough. He took his fight to the laboratory to understand and find a cure for brain cancer.  Today Dr. Q is steadfast on finding a cure for brain cancer without surgery or operation of any kind. At one point all the odds were against Dr. Q in becoming a brain surgeon. The same odds are against him now with his resolve against cancer. If Dr. Q’s personal history serves as a reminder, his tenacity and fortitude can overcome anything.   Thank you for listening. My guest this week is Dr. William (Bill) Ferraiolo. We’ll be going all the way back to the roots of cognitive behavioral therapy in this episode—back to the Stoics of ancient Greece and Rome—as we discuss Bill's book, Meditations on Self-Discipline and Failure: Stoic Exercise for Mental Fitness. The big idea of Stoicism is that we don’t have to let external events and our unruly minds determine our well-being. Instead, we can save our energy for training our thoughts and actions to serve us well (sounds like CBT!). Bill is passionate about these ideas and explains how they can make a major difference in our lives when we put them into practice—just as he discovered for himself. Topics we explore together include: The main tenets of Greco-Roman Stoicism The concept of eudaemonia as flourishing and leading a well-lived life The distinctions between Stoicism and common self-help philosophies The value at times of receiving a “kick in the butt” to return to our intentions The relations between Cynic and Stoic philosophy The overlap between CBT and Stoicism The imperative of self-knowledge and self-honesty The amazing durability of the Stoic ideas and ideals The futility of obsessing over things we can’t control The power of the limbic system to override our reason and our efforts toward equanimity The importance of frequent reminders of our best intentions The possibility of taking others’ opinions of us less seriously Why we place so much value on the thoughts in others’ heads The power of focusing our attention and energy on what is in our direct control Times when Stoicism seems to gain greater popularity and traction What it takes to move from insight to transformation The place of physical training, courage, and toughness in Stoicism How Stoicism has helped my guest through anxiety and depression The cultural resurgence of Stoicism Check out this link for more information on Marcus Aurelius, and this one for Epictetus.  I asked Bill for recommendation for modern-day Stoics; he recommended these writers (purchases made through these affiliate links will help to support the podcast, at no additional cost to you): William Irvine—A Guide to the Good Life John Sellers—The Art of Living Donald Robertson—The Philosophy of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Massimo Pigliucci—How to Be a Stoic Ryan Holliday and Steven Hanselman—The Daily Stoic A.A. Long—Epictetus: A Stoic and Socratic Guide to Life Tim Ferriss—The Tim Ferriss Show podcast Pierre Hadot—Philosophy as a Way of Life We also discussed Jordan Peterson and his book 12 Rules for Life (though Bill noted that Peterson is not a Stoic in the strict sense). Bill recommended watching Peterson's interview with David Prager. Here are links to Bill's books: A Life Worth Living: Meditations on God, Death, and Stoicism (Feb. 1, 2020) Cynical Maxims and Marginalia Meditations on Self-Discipline and Failure: Stoic Exercise for Mental Fitness Dr. William Ferraiolo completed his undergraduate degree in philosophy at Rutgers University, and received a PhD in philosophy from the University of Oklahoma. Since then he’s been teaching philosophy at San Joaquin Delta College in Stockton, California. He has two additional forthcoming books entitled You Die at the End and God Bless the Broken Bones. This episode is brought to you by baseballcloud and OnBaseU. iTunes  Stitcher Google Play Spotify   Summary: In this episode of Ahead of the Curve, I welcome Reed Peters, the head baseball coach at San Joaquin Delta College in Stockton, California. During the course of this discussion, Reed Peters puts a strong emphasis on the importance of ‘the mental game’ of baseball. Coach Peters equips listeners with an overview of his practice drills, why focusing on the players makes you a better coach, and how to prevent past success from making your team lazy.   Show Notes: Guest: Reed Peters, Head Baseball Coach at San Joaquin Delta College They discuss David Smith, a former player of Reed Peter’s was also a former coach of host Jonathan Gelnar Coach Peters won National Coach of the Year for the Pacific Division and the 2018 California State Championship His team went from having a chip on their shoulder from losing the previous year to becoming champions Players are trained in all facets of baseball so no one player is burdened with carrying the team Teams will be bring their best game against you when you are coming off of success while entering a new season It isn’t just about champions, it’s about reaching toward the next level of your career California teams are limited to 12 hour practice weeks so Wednesday is the team’s recovery day off Training days include academic study halls, mental baseball class, conditioning, throwing program, defense training, hitting, and the weight room. Saturday is for playing other teams to see how they compare The competitive culture is instilled by making players compete for their playing time Calvin Riley, a very competitive player, was shot and killed and is used as a reminder for players to stay focused After college, Reed played major league baseball with the Angles and the Giants Coach and author Ken Ravizza inspired Reed on improving the mental game of baseball The spring practice plan is less intense and includes, conditioning, throwing, hard dirt skill training, offense, defense, swing drills, and competitive games Coach Peters would rather see a ‘live arm’ so they don’t use pitching machines on the field Your career as a coach is as good as that of your players’ Lead with your heart and your God-given gifts--not with punishment Competitive point games keep the players interested and excited The biggest reward is to stay in contact with players and hear that you have been a positive influence on them 3 Key Points:     Coach Peters’ team was: 1st in runs, hits, and on-base percentage, 2nd in doubles and stolen bases, 3rd in home runs, and had an overall .315 batting average.  Every year the players have to invent their own mission statement to have something to hold each other accountable to.   Realizing his success is based on his players’ success and having positive relationships with them made Reed Peters a better coach. Tweetable Quotes: “I think we ended up having, I think, nine guys move on to Division 1 schools.” - Reed Peters (1:13) “Whatever our opponent gives us, we have to be able to take advantage of.” - Reed Peters (3:32) “Our philosophy is ‘pass the baton.’ No guy has to carry the team.” - Reed Peters (3:58) “Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard.” - Reed Peters (4:43) “We make no promises to anybody. All we are going to promise to them is that they are going to have to compete, and fight for a job and fight for their playing time.” - Reed Peters (9:03) “I think what we do more than anybody else is really focus on the mental game.” - Reed Peters (12:46)   Resources Mentioned: Ahead of the Curve Podcast @AOTC_podcast Delta College Email: rpeters@deltacollege.edu Book: “Lead...for God’s Sake” by Todd Gongwer    Website and Social Media sites for the show  www.aotcpodcast.com Twitter @aotc_podcast Facebook Ahead of the Curve Coaches Facebook group Instagram aotc_podcast

Faith, spirituality, theology and their affect on health has long been a fascination of mine so when I found Dr. Harold Koenig I knew I needed to interview him. Dr. Koenig completed his undergraduate education at Stanford University, nursing school at San Joaquin Delta College, medical school training at the University of California at San Francisco, and geriatric medicine, psychiatry, and biostatistics training at Duke University Medical Center. He is currently board certified in general psychiatry, and formerly boarded in family medicine, geriatric medicine, and geriatric psychiatry, and is on the faculty at Duke as Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, and Associate Professor of Medicine. Dr. Koenig is Director of the Center for Spirituality, Theology and Health at Duke University Medical Center, and has published extensively in the fields of mental health, geriatrics, and religion, with over 500 scientific peer-reviewed publications and book chapters and nearly 50 books in print or preparation. His research on religion, health and ethical issues in medicine has been featured on dozens of national and international TV news programs (including ABC’s World News Tonight, Dr. Oz Show, and several times on The Today Show, Good Morning America, and NBC Nightly News), over a hundred national or international radio programs, and hundreds of newspapers and magazines (including Reader's Digest, Parade Magazine, Newsweek, Time, and Guidepost). Dr. Koenig has given testimony before the U.S. Senate (1998) and U.S. House of Representatives (2008) concerning the benefits of religion and spirituality on public health, and travels widely to give seminars and workshops on this topic. His latest book, You are My Beloved. Really?, examines the evidence for God's love from Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist and Hindu perspectives based largely on the sacred scriptures from these traditions. Needless to say I found this conversation absolutely fascinating and I hope you will too. Please share this podcast with anyone you feel would benefit and rate us where you listen! HIVE - MIND, a memoir by Gabrielle Myers Hive-Mind recounts Gabrielle's experiences on a small organic farm in California's Sacramento Valley during the growing season of 2006, as she apprenticed with a female farmer who took her life as the season drew to a close. The memoir begins with Gabrielle's first day on the farm, right after she left her job at an internationally known farm-to-table restaurant, with the intention of taking a long break between cooking full-time and starting graduate school. Hive-Mind asks what reasons we give ourselves for our sustenance, while considering how this care of the self and our community can be maintained regardless of life's challenges and simultaneously compromised through alcohol and drug addiction, romantic loss, and a loved one's death. Farmer's decision to take her life after a failed romance runs counter to my embrace of life after a brief affair that didn't work out as she had hoped. The farm's acres reflect the divergent answers they each came up with in reply to what they both felt as tragic loss. Gabrielle is an Associate Professor of English, writer, and chef living in the Sacramento Valley of California. For over a decade, she worked as a cook and chef for San Francisco Bay area restaurants and catering companies. During the growing season of 2006, she apprenticed under Laura Trent, farmer and owner of Tip Top Produce, an organic farm that specialized in supplying Bay Area farmers' markets and fine-dining restaurants with heirloom vegetables. Gabrielle, an Associate Professor of English at San Joaquin Delta College, went to graduate school in her early thirties to earn an M.A. in English from the University of California at Davis and an M.F.A. in Creative Writing from Saint Mary's College of California.
