This week, Fika with Vicky asks the question…an isolated island and an old cottage…what could go wrong? I can't tell you that, because of spoilers, but I can tell you what could go right. Jeff (J.C.) Vande Zande. An Author, Poet, Screenwriter and Filmmaker, Jeff has an eclectic and engaging collection of work. In this episode, we'll be focusing on his first Horror novel, “The Dance of Rotten Sticks,” There's a lot to embrace in this work, but I especially found the dialogue within family relationships authentic. And of course, when there are children involved, it makes everything much more intense. I want to say this would be a great book to take on vacation and read by the side of a lake for the atmosphere, but on the other hand, it may send you back to the mainland sooner than you planned. Safety first! Please join us, as we look into this new campfire tale offering, “The Dance of Rotten Sticks.” It's a wonderfully worthy addition to this fine tradition, and hopefully has sparked more such stories from Jeff Vande Sande. About The Dance of Rotten Sticks:- The Dance of Rotten Sticks tells the story of Isaac Fletcher, a recent widower struggling to raise three kids after losing his wife to a bizarre car accident. His mother-in-law, aware of Isaac's drinking problem, threatens to take the kids. Hoping to become the father they need him to be, Isaac takes the family to their recently-purchased vacation property on Orphan Island. Strange incidents occur, culminating in their discovery of an abandoned orphanage that some say is haunted. Isaac's youngest begins to hear voices. His eldest has horrific dreams of their dead mother. Only Emily seems to thrive, beguiling Isaac to the true danger that she faces from the island's other inhabitants. About Jeff- Jeff Vande Zande teaches fiction writing, screenwriting, and film production at Delta College in Michigan. His award-winning short films have been accepted over 200 times in national and international film festivals. His books of fiction include the story collections Emergency Stopping (Bottom Dog Press) and Threatened Species (Whistling Shade Press). His novels include Into the Desperate Country (March Street Press), Landscape with Fragmented Figures (Bottom Dog Press), American Poet (Bottom Dog Press) and Detroit Muscle (Whistling Shade Press). In 2012, American Poet won a Michigan Notable Book Award from the Library of Michigan. In 2020, Whistling Shade Press released his collection, The Neighborhood Division: Stories, and in 2022 Montag Press released his novel, Rules of Order. The Dance of Rotten Sticks (Montag Press, 2024) is his first foray into the horror genre. He maintains a blog at www.authorjeffvandezande.blogspot.com.

On a beautiful August afternoon we had the pleasure to talk with artist and mentor, Larry Butcher. This conversation proceeds to tell a story of a young man coming to age on a rural Michigan farm with a father who expected his children to be navigators of inventive thinking and a mother who encouraged her young ones to be makers. Creative thinking and hard work was the norm and from that Larry became a visual artist and art educator, who to this day believes in the sharing of artistic knowledge. Larry Butcher has a Bachelor of Science and Master of Arts in Education from Central Michigan University and continued art studies at Cranbrook Academy of Art in Detroit. His background includes sign painting, teaching art in the Mount Pleasant School System as well as a long career as professor of art at Delta College. In the episode you will hear Larry speak of his amazing connections to artists Charles Breed and Russell Thayer, who both shaped Larry's position at Delta College which went for a 39 year run. He is well-known as a prolific painter who developed unique shaped canvas paintings as well as wonderful drawings as an amazing draughtsman. He has work in many corporate and private collections. We will be posting images on our Art Ladders: The Creative Climb Facebook Page.

We had the pleasure to spend an enjoyable hour with our artist friends, Nancy and Russell Thayer from their home and studios in Detroit via Zoom as we recorded this podcast. We couldn't help but compare and contrast our lives as artists and partners with them. We talked about sharing studio space, what a typical day would be and how each artist maintains their unique identity. As the conversation went on the secret to their successes as artists and spouses boils down to an unfailing respect for each other and unconditional love. You can hear it in their tone of voices and see it on Zoom in their expressions. Armin and I came away from this interview feeling as if we were given a key to unlock the doors that sometimes slam but can be opened with respect for each other blended with lots of love. The work of Nancy Thayer is included in numerous museum collections including the Detroit Institute of Arts, Muzeum Papiernictwa, Duszniki Zdroj, Poland, Foundation MINT ALAPITVANY, Budapest, Hungary, and in over 200 private and corporate collections throughout Europe and the U.S. She was commissioned to create nine major sculptural paintings for the city of Detroit, and 3 for major health care facilities in Michigan. Her work has been shown extensively throughout the U.S and in Italy, Germany, Hungary, Poland, The Netherlands and Korea. “While the visual content refers to and suggests forms of nature, they are not meant to be photographic or site-specific. My intention is always to communicate the spiritual essence and impact of the environment. In one series of paintings, I focused on sacred grottos, caves, and stalactites to express a private place for contemplation and a sense of solitude deep within what has been formed by nature over long periods of time.” Nancy Thayer Russell Thayer is an artist who creates sculpture in cast bronze, brass, aluminum and steel. Each piece, whether personal or a public collaboration, showcases his love of architecture, sculpture, dance, poetry and history. His long career as an artist and educator is distinguished by numerous works in public and private collections. An educator for 48 years, Thayer served as Professor of Art History, Sculpture and Drawing at Delta College, followed by 15 years as a Professor of Art at the University of Michigan. Thayer received his M.F.A. from the Instituto Allende, San Miguel d'Allende, Mexico, an M.A. in sculpture and a B.S. in Design from the University of Michigan, and a C.C. in Industrial Design from the Royal College of Art in London. "My love of architecture, sculpture, dance, poetry and history has influenced and informed my work from my student days at the University of Michigan to my most recent sculptural work. I find pleasure and purpose in creating works that are personal as well as works that are collaborations with various private and public clients." MLB – Major League Baseball Last Night Detroit Tigers 3, Baltimore Orioles 2 Cleveland Guardians 10, Chicago White Sox 7 – 11 Innings Chicago Cubs 2, Miami Marlins 1 Tigers 3, Orioles 2 – Wentz sharp for Tigers in 3-2 victory over Baltimore Joey Wentz took a shutout into the sixth inning and Akil Baddoo and Kerry Carpenter homered to lift the Detroit Tigers to a 3-2 victory over the fading Baltimore Orioles. Wentz allowed two hits and two walks in 5 2/3 innings. It was the third time in five big league starts that the rookie has held the opposition scoreless. Baddoo’s 448-foot home run in the third opened the scoring, bringing home two runs. Carpenter added a solo shot in the seventh. Rookie standout Gunnar Henderson hit a two-run homer in the seventh for Baltimore’s first runs of the series. The Tigers routed the Orioles 11-0 the previous night. Guardians 10, White Sox 7 – F/11 – Straw leads Guardians to 10-7 win over White Sox in 11 Myles Straw had a tiebreaking two-run double in Cleveland’s five-run 11th inning, and the Guardians beat the Chicago White Sox 10-7 to move closer to the American League Central title. The Guardians won for the 12th time in 16 extra-inning games this season and expanded their lead to five games over the White Sox. Straw got his go-ahead hit off Jake Diekman (5-4), and Steven Kwan followed with his fourth hit — an RBI single — to score Straw. Kwan scored on Jose Ramirez’s sacrifice fly, and a throwing error by Chicago catcher Seby Zavala allowed Amed Rosario to score with another run. Emmanuel Clase (3-4) earned the win after his fourth blown save in 40 chances in the 10th. Cubs 2, Marlins 1 – Bote drives in both runs, Cubs edge Marlins 2-1 David Bote hit a tying home run in the seventh inning, then added a sacrifice fly in the eighth that lifted the Chicago Cubs over the Miami Marlins 2-1. Esteban Quiroz got the first two hits of his major league career and P.J. Higgins also had two hits for the Cubs, who snapped a three-game losing skid. The 30-year-old Quiroz was promoted from Triple-A Saturday. Chicago loaded the bases with no outs without a hit in the eighth against reliever Steven Okert. Michael Hermosillo was hit by a pitch and Zach McKinstry reached on a sacrifice bunt when catcher Jacob Stallings threw late to second. Quiroz had a bunt single and Bote hit a go-ahead flyball. Tonight Chicago Cubs (Stroman 4-7) at Miami (Luzardo 3-7), 6:40 p.m. Detroit (Manning 2-2) at Baltimore (Lyles 10-11), 7:05 p.m. WSJM/WCSY 6:45 Cleveland (McKenzie 10-11) at Chicago White Sox (Lynn 7-5), 8:10 p.m. COVID-19/Sports – Official: Canada likely to drop vaccine requirement to enter An official familiar with the matter says Canada will likely drop the vaccine requirement for people who enter Canada by the end of September. Canada is similar to the United States in that it requires non-citizens to be vaccinated when entering the country. It is not immediately known whether the U.S. will make a similar move by Sept. 30. The official says that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau needs to give final sign off on the decision but that the government will likely be dropping the requirement as well ending random COVID testing at airports. Filling out information in the unpopular ArriveCan app will also no longer be required. LLWS – Family sues Little League over bunk bed fall, head injury A Utah boy who suffered a serious head injury after falling from a bunk bed during last month’s Little League World Series has returned home from the hospital, and his family is suing the league and the company that made the bed. The family’s lawyer said Tuesday that 12-year-old Easton Oliverson has undergone three brain operations and is now experiencing seizures. He said the boy fell in his sleep on Aug. 15. The lawsuit accuses Little League International and Savoy Contract Furniture of Williamsport of negligence for using or selling bunk beds without safety railings. A Little League spokesperson declined comment, and the furnituremaker did not immediately respond to messages seeking comment. NFL – Bills CB Dane Jackson avoids major injury, out of hospital Buffalo Bills cornerback Dane Jackson was released from the hospital after tests revealed he sustained no major injury to his neck or spinal cord when he was struck by a teammate. The Bills also revealed Tuesday that safety Micah Hyde was sent to the hospital for tests after he was carted off the field with his own neck injury later in Monday night’s win over Tennessee. Hyde is also out of the hospital. Jackson’s injury was considered to be more serious. He was driven off the field in an ambulance. Later Tuesday, he was back at the Bills’ facility for treatment.. NFL – Sunday, Monday football games fight for ratings supremacy As often happens, NBC’s ‘Sunday Night Football’ game won the week’s rating competition, but the Chicago-Green Bay game had a tough battle with the revamped “Monday Night Football” game. That game, between Denver and Seattle, was seen by nearly 10.3 million on ABC and another 8 million people when it was simulcast on ESPN. CBS’ “60 Minutes” was the most popular non-football game on TV, with its season debut featuring an interview with President Joe Biden reaching 10.2 million people. During a week when broadcast networks mostly had one last week of reruns in preparation for starting the fall TV season, NBC’s summer hit “America’s Got Talent” had its swan song. NFL – Fan arrested for allegedly throwing bottle at Browns owner A fan was arrested for allegedly throwing a plastic water bottle and hitting Cleveland Browns owner Jimmy Haslam during the closing moments of Sunday’s 31-30 home loss to the New York Jets. Cleveland police say 51-year-old Jeffrey Miller of Rocky River was charged with assault, disorderly conduct and failure to comply. Miller was spotted by video surveillance throwing the bottle and was followed with cameras. After the Jets took the lead, a video showed Haslam walking toward the tunnel in FirstEnergy Stadium when he was struck by the projectile. A person familiar with Browns’ decision says the team intends to ban Miller from the stadium. NHL – AP source: MacKinnon signs 8-year deal, highest paid in NHL The Colorado Avalanche are making Nathan MacKinnon the highest-paid player in the NHL’s salary cap era. The 27-year-old signed an eight-year contract that is worth $100.8 million, according to a person with knowledge of the situation. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Tuesday because the team did not announce terms of the contract. His new $12.6 million salary cap hit that goes into effect at the start of the 2023-24 season surpasses Connor McDavid’s $12.5 million as the highest in the league. NHL – Longtime NHL defenseman Zdeno Chara, 45, retires as a Bruin Zdeno Chara has announced his retirement after playing 24 NHL seasons and captaining the Boston Bruins to the Stanley Cup in 2011. The 6-foot-9 defenseman from Slovakia is calling it a career at age 45. He returned to Boston to make that announcement two years after splitting with the Bruins following 14 seasons. Chara won the Norris Trophy as the league’s top defenseman in 2009 and also spent time with the New York Islanders, Ottawa Senators and Washington Capitals. He’s a candidate for the Hockey Hall of Fame based not only on his consistency through 1,880 regular-season games but also his stature in the game from Slovakia to North America. Golf – US guarding against overconfidence in Presidents Cup The Americans are big favorites in the Presidents Cup. And it might be a matter of protecting against overconfidence. Captain Davis Love III doesn’t see that as an issue. He mentions all the winning photos of past U.S. teams and how this group wants to be in the next picture. Loves says this 12-man squad doesn’t have a record because it has never played together. International captain Trevor Immelman looks forward to what he sees as an uphill battle. He lost a lot of players to LIV Golf. But he likes the 12 who have rallied around the underdog label. Tennis – Roger Federer to discuss his retirement on Wednesday Roger Federer’s farewell news conference will come before what he has said will be the last competitive tennis event of his career. Federer will meet with the media Wednesday to discuss walking away from the game at age 41 after 20 Grand Slam titles. Federer is in London and has been practicing at the arena that will host the indoor hard-court matches for the Laver Cup. The event founded by his management team begins Friday with the fifth edition of its Team Europe vs. Team World format. The main rivals whose careers overlapped with Federer’s also are participating: Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray. Coach Lonnie GriffinIn this episode, you'll hear from Lonnie Griffin. Coach Griffin is currently the head coach at Northwood University. This is year two for Coach Griffin as the leader of the Northwood program. As you soon will find out, this is a podcast about determination. Quite simply, how bad do you want to be a coach? Coach Griffin will share his own personal story of determination and drive to reach his goal. Right off the bat, as a student assistant coach at Eastern Michigan University, Coach Lonnie knew that he had to create his own personal coaching brand. During coaching stops at Central Michigan University, Alma College, Grand Valley State University, Delta College and Northwood, Coach Lonnie dove two feet in on recruiting. Quite simply, he made it a quest to know every player in the state of Michigan. Coach Lonnie's tips for young coaches on recruiting is a must listen! Lonnie also has established his own core coaching philosophies and shares them openly in this podcast. Helping his players grow is his mission. At times, getting this growth from his players takes honest conversations. However, Coach Griffin is committed to help his players go from young men to men on and off the court. Wait until you hear Coach Griffin talk so passionately about the culture of his program. And how CULTURE starts with him! Incredible insight. Finally, this is a great conversation about the love and respect that Coach Griffin has for his coaching staff. Humbling to hear a head coach so willingly learn even from his own staff. On a personal note, Coach Griffin is a genuine person who has worked so hard to achieve his goal. I am super excited to share his coaching story. Truly, good things happen to good people! For artists, time and space are precious and can be a journey that is pursued throughout an art career. Val and Armin discuss the many types of studios they have had in the past and present. They each have preferences and their spaces are quite different. The way they organize time is also very much in tune with their personalities. As you listen, you may discover insights into your own personal tastes as it relates to your art practice. Are you motivated by process and materials needing lots of space to spread out and explore or do you crave an intimate studio that is more akin to a study or library with everything in its place? Think about the way your schedule and deadlines can either motivate you in a positive way with a rush of energy or add stress to a breaking point that leads to an artist's block. Please post photos of your studio and tell us about your time management routines on our Art Ladders: The Creative Climb with Valerie Allen and Armin Mersmann Facebook page. In this episode, your host Dr. Jamal Watson sits down with Dr. Michael H. Gavin, newly appointed president of Delta College, to discuss his new book The New White Nationalism in Politics and Higher Education. Tune in as Dr. Gavin reveals the influence of white nationalism not only in politics, but in higher education, and the need to challenge policies rooted in the comfort of past identities. He shares his ideas on educational access and how to turn institutions inside out from where they started, along with the impact COVID-19 has had on his new role at Delta College. Don't miss this riveting discussion on new white nationalism and its role in our world. As Dr. Michael H. Gavin puts it, if you're not actively working against a system that oppresses, then you're part of it. KEY POINTS: The inspiration behind Dr. Gavin's new book and the critical timing of its publication Understanding the relationship between white nationalism and higher education Rising activism and consciousness about the issues across college campuses How politics dictate funding for higher education institutions The danger of white complacency Dr. Mike Gavin's work as the new president of Delta College QUOTABLES: “There is a real strategic approach of very conservative ideals, where there are tacit but very violent policies and systems that are worked on through coded languages, such as family values.” “Part of the discomfort of the book is that it makes the case that by being complacent, you're actually buying into these notions of what I call white nationalism.” GUEST INFORMATION: Dr. Michael H. On this episode of Destination on the Left, I talk with Annette Rummel, master collaborator, travel trailblazer, and CEO of Great Lakes Bay Regional Convention and Visitors Bureau. Annette gives her insights on finding the win-win in collaborative relationships and why she believes in actively seeking out collaborators rather than sitting by and passively waiting for them to find you. What You Will Learn: What Annette has done to really help Great Lakes Bay Regional Convention and Visitors Bureau stand out from the crowd The challenges that Annette faced in 2020 and some of the creative solutions that her team used to move through them How Annette and her colleagues created the Great Lakes Bay Regional Convention and Visitors Bureau from three county CVBs Annette's advice for listeners who might want to start thinking about potential collaborations for their destination What cathedral thinking means to Annette and how it has helped her during her career An Innovative Approach Creativity is enhanced when people feel able to suggest new things, and Annette describes why she values innovation in her team. She shares how the Great Lakes Bay Regional Convention and Visitors Bureau try to open their eyes to everything in their destination and pass on their enthusiasm to their visitors. We also discuss Annette's enthusiasm for collaboration and how she engineered the creation of a regional CVB in the Great Lakes region of Michigan that took three county CVBs under one successful umbrella organization. Crisis Management Annette shares the story of the crisis within a crisis in the Great Lakes region and how her team at the CVB was able to swing into action to help accommodate those left homeless by flooding. She describes why they were so grateful for the support of their partner organizations and why the disaster underlined the importance of having established collaborative relationships in place. The Bible gives us a record of God's judging the evil and violence of man with a flood. Skeptics say modern geology proves the flood didn't happen. Christians affirm the reality of the flood but often become entangled in debate over whether or not the flood covered the entire world or just a local area in and around the ancient Near East. Many Christians are also divided on the issue of how old the earth is. We explore this issue by looking at science and young-earth creationism. This episode begins an investigation of the biblical flood from a scientific perspective. On this episode we feature the research of geologist Dr. Timothy Clarey of the Institute for Creation Research. You can find out more about Tim's work on his ICR website at https://www.icr.org/tim_clarey/. Dr. Tim Clarey received a Master of Science in Geology in 1984 from the University of Wyoming and a Master of Science in Hydrogeology in 1993 from Western Michigan University. His Ph.D. in Geology was received in 1996 from Western Michigan University. From 1984 to 1992, Dr. Clarey worked as an exploration geologist at Chevron USA, Inc. He was Full Professor and Geosciences Chair at Delta College in Michigan for 17 years before leaving in 2013 to join the science staff at the Institute for Creation Research. “I was at art school: two years at Delta College and then one year at Western Michigan University as a painting major. But I enjoyed cooking more than anything, so I naively decided to go to culinary school. I thought ‘In two years I’ll get my degree and then I’ll be a chef!’After graduation, I worked at the Montague Inn Bed & Breakfast part-time as their pastry chef, and then my old chef referred me to a place in Ellsworth called Tapawingo. It was a Five Diamond property, James Beard-nominated and they needed a pastry chef.I got the job.I had to step it up. I had my own kitchen and got to work with a lot of great chefs. But when we had our first child, our family was still in Saginaw and we decided to move back to be closer to family. At that point, Patisserie had been open for about a year and I was fortunate to get a job there. While I was at Patisserie and Jenny was working at Home Depot, we were driving by this space one day and saw a ‘For Sale’ sign. Opening our own place was something we always wanted to do. The space was previously Richie Rich’s Deli, and it was perfect. We partnered with Jenny’s sister and brother-in-law and were able to buy it. They helped us get it going because they knew it was our dream. For the menu, I wanted it to focus on quality but still be accessible, and it's pretty much stayed the same since we’ve opened. Our specials are driven mainly by seasonality and Farmer’s Market produce. Peaches, blueberries, and strawberries are coming up so we’ll do something special with those. There is some carryover between art school and food. Food has to look good, it has to smell good, it has to be presented well. You’re working with all the senses. But the main thing is the taste. If it doesn’t taste good, you’re dead in the water.- Adam and Jenny Bolt, owners of fralias#artofthesandwichFralia's is open Monday through Friday from 10:30AM to 3:30PM, and Saturdays 10AM to 3PM. Gregory Clifton SmithBecoming an educator was a natural transition after being a City Planner with the NYC Parks Department Street Tree Division and the Supervisor of Horticulture at the Bronx Zoo. The most logical transition into education was becoming a Career and Technical Education instructor at the Philadelphia School District’s W. B. Saul High School of Agricultural Sciences. Additionally, I've worked in the food and wine service industry at the acclaimed Standard Hotel’s Standard Grill in New York City and Robert Mondavi's Woodbridge Estates in California. Currently, I am a Career and Technical Education teacher with a focus on Natural Resources Management and Food Science at the largest secondary Agriscience program in the United States, which also houses the largest single-school chapter of the FFA. I'm a multifaceted educator who likes to bring everything to the table when educating and influencing my students’ involvement in learning. I believe learning can be both educational and entertaining, which is why I construct multimedia STEAM-based lessons that employ creativity, real-world experiences, and active learning opportunities that are coherent, cohesive, and connected to 21st Century skills. The foundation of my teaching pedagogy is to create engaging project-based learning experiences, rooted in real-world experiences and focused on developing essential skills like communication, research, critical thinking, and problem-solving in order to prepare my students for life after graduation. My educational background includes a Bachelor’s in Environmental Science from Hampton University, a Master of Environmental Studies from the Yale University School of Forestry and Environmental Science, and I am currently working on a Career and Technical Education certification and a second Master at Temple’s School of Education. Additionally, I have been recreationally trained in photography, video production, and multimedia at Delta College in Stockton, California. As evident by my academic past and present, I truly enjoy learning, and subsequently through my current experiences as Saul High School, I have learned I am a great instructor. In 2020, I was acknowledged by the School District of Philadelphia as a 2020 Lindback Award winner for Distinguished Teachers. To learn more about what I am doing to actualize this mission, please visit www.gregclifsmith.com and follow me on IG @smith.at.saul.Today's episode is SPONSORED by Mateo Records.
