Gus Clemens on Wine explores and explains the world of wine in simple, humorous, fun posts
This is the weekly newspaper column.Napa agonistes 12-7-2022Once upon a time Napa Valley was a place of pastoral legend. Blessed with the bucolic beauties of wooded knolls, forested slopes, springtime fields dappled with mustard flowers, summertime's lush greenery, the valley aflame in reds and yellows come fall. The human presence was a smattering of vineyards and family-owned wineries, dairies, cattle ranches, walnut groves, plum-tree orchards.Today, most of that is only idyllic memory seen through the gauze of embellished nostalgia. Napa remains one of the world's iconic wine regions, but it is a vastly different Napa. From around 40 wineries in the 1970s, there now are 1,700 wineries and raging fights over land and water use.The valley is just 30 miles long and five miles wide. Its two main roads, Highway 29 and Silverado Trail, have morphed from picturesque country lanes into miles-long traffic jams. In 1985, with its reputation swelling from the “Judgement of Paris” and the TV soap opera Falcon Crest, there were rumblings about how two million visitors a year threatened Napa's charm.Stan ShebsToday, Napa draws four million visitors a year. Where wine tastings used to be free, they now cost up to $300. Where there once was a single hotel, now there is lodging everywhere. Expensive three-star restaurants seemingly sit on every corner. Once there were family farm houses, now “Château Egos” where people who made fortunes elsewhere pursue seigneurial fantasies. The sweeping fields of vines still yield world-class treasures. But nature also feels the agony of change. The sublime blazes of fall colors now compete with the blazes of wind-whipped wildfires. Water, a precious resource even in the pastoral past, now presents crisis with heavier use and lighter rain and snowfalls. Climate change threatens legendary grape varieties. Pinot noir is pulled for heat-friendly zinfandel and aglianico. Even some cabernet sauvignon—Napa's signature, bedrock variety—may have to be replaced in warmer Napa niches.Change is inevitable. Pendulums swing. Napa survives, but not in the ways it was back in the old days.Tasting notes: There are links to the larger review in the copy.• Gamble Family Vineyards Rosé Napa Valley 2021: Red fruit-forward; built for those who are not fans of lighter style of rosé. $18-26 Link to my review• Stags' Leap The Investor Napa Valley Red Wine 2018: Leans more towards elegance than raw Napa power. $42-55 Link to my review• Davis Estates Merlot, Napa Valley 2017: Coats your mouth with pleasuring fruit, soft tannins, hints of chocolate. $70 Link to my review• Larkmead Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley 2019: Opulent, hedonistic pleasure. Dan Berger & Walter Leiva. Davis Estates winemaker Walter Leiva is our guest on California Wine Country with Steve Jaxon and Dan Berger. Before talking about Davis Estates wines with Walter, Dan Berger has opened another cellar dweller, this one is a 2015 Pinot Gris from the Lichen Estate in Anderson Valley and it's delicious, everyone loves it. Dan detects flavors of dried peaches and a little spice element from the young wine. Pinot Gris is difficult because it produces tannins, when the grapes turn a pinkish-gray when ripening. Normally, tannins are not good for whites. Davis Estates is a family owned and operated boutique limited production winery located in Calistoga. They make several varieties, especially Cabernet, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. It ls located at 4060 Silverado Trail in the north end of Calistoga. They have a tasting room and a tasting experience with a full-time executive chef Mark Caldwell. He is a wine guy to creates pairings specifically for their wines. Dan Berger says, “The winery is spectacular, gorgeous.” They taste their 2019 Chardonnay which Dan Berger says is delicious but could stand three or four more years before it begins to show. It has a nice combination of tropical and citrus fruit. It uses oak barrels but no malolactic fermentation. Dan says that it is “white Burgunday incarnate” and that if it were French, it would go for $150 a bottle. This is a limited production, only about 600 or 700 cases. The property is easy to reach from Sonoma County. Dan recommends a visit. Click the logo to visit our sponsor Bottle Barn online for the best deals on wine, beer and spirits. This uses clone 95, which Dan says does not produce a lot of fruit, so it is expensive to make. For a winery with an emphasis on quality, that's fine. Walter mentions their quest to develop the phenolic profile in the vineyard. Next they will taste the 2020 Sauvignon Blanc, which is made with fruit from Rutherford, stainless steel fermented. They use “just a touch of oak,” for texture and it has a crisp acid and tropical fruit. In 1966, Mondavi started using the name Fumé Blanc, when very few people had had success with Sauvignon Blanc. The French designation was “Blanc Fumé” and so Robert Mondavi reversed the word order. The name of the label used to be Windmill Valley, which is reflected in the windmill on the Davis Estates labels. Now they taste Classic Chase, a blend of 48% Cabernet Franc, 49% Merlot and the rest is Petit Verdot. Cabernet Franc is the “father” of Cabernet Sauvignon. It has a little more personality, when grown properly. Dan says this will be the salvation of Napa Valley in the future. Merlot has more personality than Cab Sauvignon. This is a big wine that has good aging potential.

Recently I visited Willi's Seafood and Raw Bar.Tony Lombardi met me at the restaurant, and GM Nick joines us as we paired Tony's Wines with Willi's amazing menu. I visit Willi's often and love the staff and all the great idems on this great menu.We have four new features and at the bottom of this feature are links so you can click on each link and join us as we enjoy the beautiful Lombardi Wines with suggestions from Nick.Nick has been with Stark's Restaurants for many years and has great knowlegde of wines from all over the world. Lombardi Wines include three Pinot Noirs and a great Chardonnay. Founded in 2013, Tony & Christine Lombardi began a passion project that honors a rich family history of wine, food and tradition. Together, with Winemaker Cabell Coursey, they craft Small lots of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from some of the finest vineyards in the Sonoma Coast. The Pinot Noir is crafted with care from a family of growers in Petaluma, where the Lombardi Family has been since 1947. The 2018 Chardonnay shows beautiful aromas of layered green apple, lemon-lime citrus, orange blossom, honeysuckle and just a hint of vanilla. ON THE PALATE This 2018 Sonoma Coast Chardonnay is star bright and offers layers of lifted and vibrant peach, pear, and tangerine flavors on the palate. The finish gradually turns crisp with a final wash of mouthwatering natural acidity. This alluring Pinot Noir reveals dark aromas of blackberry, black cherry and ripe currants in the nose with a dust of cocoa. ON THE PALATE The 2018 Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir delivers dark black fruits that slowly melt into all areas of the mouth. There is focused acidity and fine dry tannins that carry the rich blackberry, anise, cedar, black licorice and mocha flavors toward the mid-palate, leading to a lingering juicy finish of black cherry and dried currants. Giusti Ranch, once known as “La Colina” (The Hill), was founded by Angelo Giusti Sr. in the 1870s, and has made a significant impact on Sonoma County agriculture for over 140 years. The ranch has contributed their farming and services to different parts of the community with several crops over the last century, including olives, grapes, cherries, prunes, apples, and now back to grapes since 2000. This ranch is truly a Sonoma County treasure and we are fortunate to have access to a little fruit from this incredible vineyard. AROMATICS The 2018 Pinot Noir reveals enticing aromas of cinnamon, rich red and black berries, along with baked cherry pie. ON THE PALATE This fresh California Pinot is typical of the Russian River Valley appellation, and shows layered flavors of raspberry, black cherry and blackberry fruit compote. There is an intensity to this wine and it lingers in the mouth, even to the last sip. The 9-acre Hill Justice Vineyard with it's rocky, red-soil and higher clay content, would blend in perfectly on Napa Valley's Silverado Trail. However, Hill Justice is steeply sloped and sits on the side of Sonoma Mountain at nearly 1100' elevation. Click here and join us as we enjoy great food and wine . Poetry Vineyard is a steep, southwest-facing, hillside vineyard that reaches from the highest elevation in the Stags Leap District down to the Silverado Trail. Made up of a combination of shallow, volcanic soils on top of fractured shale, this vineyard receives plenty of sunshine and is the source for the winery’s flagship Cabernet, Sauvignon, Poetry. The vineyards on the valley floor surrounding the tasting room and the winery are referred toas Twin Peaks Ranch. The soil is predominantly gravelly loam, and the vines are planted to red Bordeauxvarieties. This property forms the backbone of the Cliff Lede Stags Leap District Cabernet Sauvignon. The state-of-the-art winery, designed by Howard Backen, combines time-tested techniques with innovative technology. It features a Pellenc optical sorting machine, which sorts grapes based upon quality settingsestablished by the winemaker. Following an additional hand-sort, a unique crane system gently gravity deliversthe berries to tanks for fermentation, allowing for minimal processing of the fruit. In addition, Ledecommissioned American tank manufacturer Mueller to recreate distinctive truncated tanks similar to those at Château Latour, tapered to allow for a higher skin-to-juice ratio, resulting in greater complexity and a deeper concentration of flavors in the wine.

“Sometimes we all want to get as far away from running as possible, right? And I say that in a lighthearted way but I think that anyone who has been involved in running in any way knows what that means. We love running to an obsession, and that's great, but we also need a deep breath, a break, something else that is not just running. I find myself as a lot of things, and running is a big part of that, but that's not the only thing I am.” Super excited to share a recent conversation I had with Brian Metzler for this week's episode of the podcast. I've known Brian a long time—back in 2009-2010 we co-wrote the On The Run column for Triathlete magazine—and he was my boss at Competitor magazine and Competitor.com (now PodiumRunner.com) from 2012-2016. Before his stint as editor-in-chief of Competitor, Brian worked as a senior editor at Running Times, he was also the founding editor of Trail Runner magazine, and he's written for almost every running and outdoor publication imaginable at one point or another over the years. He's authored or co-authored a few books in recent years and has a new one coming out soon called Kicksology: The Hype, Science, Culture, and Cool of Running Shoes. I loved this conversation and I think you will too. We talked running, media, and running shoes—along with where and how all those things intersect—and how Brian has made a career out of writing about the sport and the industry over the past 25 years. We discussed trends that have come and gone in media and with running shoes—two areas Brian knows more than most people about—and we also got into his new book, which, if you're a shoe geek like me, or are just curious about how running shoes and the industry have evolved over the last several decades, you will definitely want to pre-order ahead of its release next month. "It takes a long time to write books, it takes a long time to run a marathon, it takes even longer to train for a marathon, but if you don't take any shortcuts, and you push yourself, and you do the things that you're afraid of, if you get comfortable with being uncomfortable, then that's where the magic can happen." Excited to welcome Matt Futterman, the deputy sports editor of The New York Times and author of the new book, Running To The Edge: A Band of Misfits and the Guru Who Unlocked the Secrets of Speed, to the podcast this week. Futterman is an avid runner himself—he's run 23 marathons and has qualified for Boston—and we had a great conversation about his new book, which is largely about coach Bob Larsen and his quest to discover the training secrets that would lead American runners back to prominence on the world stage. We also talked about how he got into running and developed an interest in it, why track and running have fallen out of fervor with mainstream media and what he's doing at The New York Times to help bring more attention to the sport, the appeal of the marathon and what it's taught him about himself and life in general, the importance of being process-oriented and appreciating the journey, whether it's running, work, of life, and so much more. We welcomed John Gallaway on May 26, 2019 with his message, "The Sidewalk of Life". A walk on the tourist filled sidewalks of downtown San Francisco can be a metaphor for traveling one's spiritual journey. We hope to savor the richness of life experiences, seeking a harmonious pace to our excursions among the familiar and unfamiliar faces of our world, and discovering what lies ahead at the next crossroad ……to challenge us.... or to enrich us.... or hopefully both. The 4 seasons, 5 elements and 6 senses of Pinot Noir. Explore the TerroirAt Inman Family Wines we practice sensitive farming and natural winemaking, growing grapes and making wine in Sonoma County’s Russian River Valley. The alchemy of the elements created our beautiful and unique estate vineyard, Olivet Grange. Winemaker Kathleen Inman brings a "sixth sense" to the creation of unique blends, elegant to the palate. As a third-generation Napa Valley native, it’s no surprise that Kathleen developed an interest in wine. However, it wasn’t until she attended a wine tasting seminar as a college student at UC Santa Barbara that she took an active interest in her revered grape: Pinot Noir. When she returned home to Napa in the summer before her junior year, she took a job at Napa Creek Winery, which was a small startup winery on the Silverado Trail. At Napa Creek Winery, she had the opportunity to lead tours and perform various tasks in the cellar. This video shows that her love of gardening began at an early age when she helped her father in their home garden and her grandmother in her garden and orchard.

Jim Regusci on 100 years of family, wine, and fun in Napa on “The Taste with Doug Shafer” The Regusci family’s roots in Napa Valley go back more than 120 years. On this episode of “The Taste with Doug Shafer” Jim Regusci tells the story of his grandfather coming to America from Switzerland in the 1890s and eventually purchasing the family’s home ranch on Silverado Trail. Jim’s father, Angelo, and later Jim and his siblings all grew up on the property, which today is the home of Regusci Winery and the site of some of the oldest Zinfandel vines in the Valley, which may date to the 1800s. Besides running the family winery, Jim operates a vineyard management company and is a partner in two other wineries, T-Vine and Tank Garage Winery. Jim and Doug talk about all this, plus how they met over a bottle of Wild Turkey, on this episode. Enjoy!
In a quiet nook off of Silverado Trail in St Helena District of Napa Valley, Boeschen Vineyards is hidden where the grapevines meet the oak hillside. Cypress trees interplanted with the Sauvignon blanc vines was the compromise the Boeschens struck with their master gardener mother, Susan. After a career as a strategy consultant for technology companies Doug Boeschen was compelled to take a viticulture job and learn about growing grapes and making wine. That compulsion is what catalyzed the purchase of vineyards that would become Boeschen Vineyards and then the building of a winery within a cave to solidify the new estate brand. I met Doug during our studies at UC Davis, but used the opportunity of this podcast to catch up and learn the stories of both his education in winemaking and the creation of the Boeschen wines. Our conversation ranges from the land stewardship certifications that the Boeschen earned, to the influence of the Porsche Carrera in his winemaking, and then to technical aspects of farming such as Pierce's Disease and shade cloth to protect grapes from the afternoon sun. One of my favorite aspects of this episode is what Doug learned from working in a tough internship in Bordeaux. Thanks for listening.
The past five years have been rough for small, family-operated wineries in California: dozens of them have been absorbed by large beverage conglomerates that proceeded to increase production and destroy the individuality of the product. Steve Reynolds is a former dentist who purchased property on Napa’s Silverado Trail about 20 years ago and built a devoted following; he talks with … Read more about this episode...
