In this episode of the Backpacking Light Podcast, host Ryan Jordan speaks with Black Diamond athlete Joe Grant and product designer Derick Noffsinger about the conception, design process, and field testing behind Black Diamond's fastpacking-oriented pack systems—including the Distance and Beta Light models. The discussion covers the challenges of designing hybrid load-carrying systems that merge the comfort and mobility of running vests with the load-bearing capacity of traditional backpacks. Joe provides context from real-world testing, including an 11-day, 400-mile fastpacking loop through the San Juan Mountains of Colorado, while Derick explains the rationale behind material choices like Challenge Ultra fabrics and the progression from early prototypes to commercial models. Additional topics include pack fit, load distribution, scaling harness design across different volumes, and how specific design elements—such as ice axe attachments and pack tapering—optimize performance for scrambling, climbing, and off-trail travel. The episode concludes with insights into ongoing refinement strategies and how incremental improvements in gear design support more efficient and confident movement in technical environments. What three unexpected characters show up inside of Seven Dwarfs Mine Train? In this episode of Distory, we hop aboard Seven Dwarfs Mine Train in the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World to ride through Disney's newest Snow White attraction. On our way, we spot some recycled pieces from an old ride we've seen before, hear about how Dopey got his ear wiggle, get mad about sticking tommies, and discover all the ways the Imagineers integrated pieces of the classic 1937 animated film into this attraction. Kirk gets shocked by a hidden Mickey he didn't know about, Kate discusses Joe Grant's inspiration for the Witch, and we spend a little time in the cottage finding turtles, candlesticks, and a pair of hands that are MUCH too large for our comfort. Joe Grant is an ultra runner and mountain athlete who holds the FKT on the Colorado Trail and has competed all over the world at races such as the Hardrock 100, Ultra-Trail Du Mont-Blanc, and the Iditarod in Alaska. He also explores the mountains by bike and competed in the Arizona Trail race in 2016 on a fully rigid drop bar bike. Born in England and raised in France, he now lives in Durango, Colorado. In this conversation, Joe talks about his complicated relationship with the premise of FKTs, why he tries to orient his projects around the place and the trail rather than himself, and where he stands on the documentation debate in bikepacking and ultra running. He also talks about some of his recent projects, including “Home to Home,” in which he and some friends captured his on-foot attempt at The Colorado Trail with only analog film cameras and a guitar. Even though he's built a career on winning races and accomplishing unprecedented challenges in the mountains, he explains why he tries to make his projects about more than just the records.

This episode is a little different than normal-- it's me being interviewed on the Off the Couch podcast by my friends Jonathan Ellsworth and Brendan Leonard. Brendan is likely familiar to many of you long-time listeners-- he joined me on the podcast a few years ago to discuss his writing career, his film "How to Run 100 Miles" and his blog Semi-Rad. Jonathan is the creator of Blister, an amazing online resource that includes outdoor gear reviews, a podcast network, and much more. Jonathan will be joining me on this podcast in the coming months. - Jonathan and Brendan were nice enough to invite me on Off the Couch to discuss a somewhat silly challenge that I imposed on myself on my 43rd birthday. Every hour on the hour for 24 hours, I ran a 1.3-mile loop around my neighborhood. In between laps, I did a long list of tasks that I had been putting off, including stacking firewood, cleaning and rearranging my basement, sending a ridiculous number of emails, and other mindless tasks. The whole thing was based on a film by a guy named Beau Miles who did a similar challenge in Australia. I stumbled across the film on Youtube and decided to give it a shot a few days later. I've linked to that film in the episode notes. - That birthday challenge was just one part of what turned out to be a wide-ranging conversation about a ton of fun and funny topics. We discussed the backstory on the Mountain & Prairie, my experiences running 50 and 100-mile races, some scary moments I've had running ultras, why I'm so obsessed with reading books, and some of my favorite books from 2020. There were enough interesting topics that overlap with what we discuss here on Mountain & Prairie, so I thought some of y'all might enjoy it and get a few laughs at my expense. - If you're interested in running and some of the fascinating characters that the sport attracts, I encourage you to check out Off the Couch. You'll recognize a few past Mountain & Prairie guests, including Mike Foote and Joe Grant, but all of the episodes are fun and inspiring. There's a link in the episode notes, so check it out. He's done great things, but has found a way to reflect on all it has taught him. Joe is a mountain athlete, writer, coach and photographer, living in Colorado. He's raced in some of the most competitive events around the globe and has also pursued local, self-powered adventures around Colorado. Notably he linked all of Colorado's fourteen thousand foot peaks in 31 days, self-powered and self-supported by bike and on foot starting and finishing at his home in Gold Hill. Born in the UK and moving to France as a 6 year old, Joe's entry into running came from an interest in backpacking and climbing. What started as a more utilitarian tool to cover more terrain and 'explore wild places under his own power,' transitioned in 2007 to an enjoyment for the ultra running experience. With only one race under Joe's belt, he placed first at the Caballo Blanco Copper Canyon Ultra. However, it was the holism community vibe and opportunity to experience culture and land that drew him into the sport over the competitive nature of it. It was around this time the sport of ultra running popularised and attracted sponsorship.Joe was amongst one of the early waves of talented trail enthusiasts who stepped into a unique way of life - that involved international racing and frequent travel. Some of Joe's diverse race resume includes: Hardrock 100s (2nd in 2012 & 3rd in 2017), the Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc, Western States 100, the UltraTrail Mt. Fuji, Tor des Géants (330kms in Italy), The Coastal Challenge (six-day race in Costa Rica), the Iditarod Trail Invitational (560kms in Alaska during winter) and the Arizona Trail Race (1200km mountain bike) This conversation includes (not exclusively) the discussion of: * Joe's early influences - grandparents & rollerblading. * His early obsession with the minimalist mindset, and how running fitted into that aesthetic. * The grounding nature of buddhism & eastern philosophy to cool the fire - the mind & emotions. * The evolving concept and opportunity for the sponsored endurance athlete. * The cost of international racing and the growing pains it created in other areas of his life. * Returning to his roots and to embarking on the Tour de 14ers. Our guest for this episode is Joe Grant. A native of Scotland, Joe is a modern-day mystic, a blogger, and the author of numerous books and articles about scripture, justice and spirituality. Prior to moving to Louisville 25 years ago, Joe worked with indigenous peoples of the U.S. and in Latin America. His work has been rooted in the Catholic Christian tradition, but his sensibilities are deeply interdenominational and interfaith. Joe spends his time writing, leading retreats, and offering spiritual guidance. His latest book, Wandering and Welcome: Meditations for Finding Peace is published by Franciscan Media. We sat down to talk about Joe's spiritual journey, which has led him deep into the heart of the Amazon rainforest, into the pain and violence of inner city Louisville where he and his wife Anne make their home, and in all of this, into the heart of our beautiful, wounded world. The Earth & Spirit Podcast is a production of the Earth & Spirit Center, a nonprofit, interfaith spirituality center in Louisville, KY, devoted to cultivating a flourishing world through contemplative practice. This podcast is made possible by the generous support from the Kalliopeia Foundation, whose mission is to reconnect ecology, culture, and spirituality through grantmaking, education, and media initiatives.

In 2016 Joe climbed all 57 Colorado 14ers, self-powered, riding his bike to each mountain, taking 31 days - and he didn’t bring a foam pad. Earlier he entered the Colorado Trail Mountain Bike race - on a non-suspension bike with a leather saddle. "An ideal aesthetic is not necessarily a rational thing, it's an emotional feeling." He has finished 2nd, 3rd, and 6th at the iconic Hardrock 100. He's done everything from the Iditarod Trail Invitation in the Alaskan winter, the Arizona Trail Race on a mountain bike, to the Tour de 14ers. UTMB was sort of an easy day for Joe. Comfort does not create happiness - that's a bad but persistent modern myth - but when does a project become so hard it's not worth it? Joe is very thoughtful and articulate - listen as he answers these questions, AND, gives us a heads up on his upcoming project, "Home to Home", which uses both photography and music to share his recent Colorado Trail FKT. Joe Grant is a highly accomplished professional ultra-runner and all-around endurance athlete who has completed some of the endurace world’s most challenging events—several Hardrock 100s, UTMB 100, Western States 100, and Bighorn 100, as well as the Arizona Trail Race (750 miles on mountain bike), Iditarod Trail Invitational 350, and many, many more. He most recently completed the “Tour de 14ers,” a solo, self-supported and self-powered link-up of all of Colorado's 14,000-foot mountains, by bicycle and on foot. For those of you counting, that’s climbing 57 fourteeners, accessed all by bike, in 31 days. • But Joe’s career as a professional athlete makes up only a small portion of his personal identity. He is a talented writer and photographer, as well as a voracious reader. He was born in England and grew up in France, so he has a global perspective that gives him a unique point of view. He is obviously driven to pursue challenging goals, yet he has always been focused more on the process than the end result. Joe's athletic achievements seem to combine his desire for continued personal growth with a genuine love of wild places and a strong conservation ethic. • Because he has such a depth of knowledge on so many interesting subjects, talking with Joe solely about running would only begin to scratch the surface. So after a rundown of his recent 14er adventure, we went deep into his thoughts on adventure, endurance, and pushing one’s personal boundaries. He talked about his upbringing and how family and friends have helped shape his outlook on life, giving him the confidence to pursue an unconvential, yet extremely fulfilling lifestyle. We of course talked a lot about books, as well as goal setting, daily practices, and his thoughts on conservation. • I’m obviously biased, but I loved this conversation and really appreciate Joe taking the time to chat. I encourage you to check him out on social media, and read some of his columns. If you like people who are passionate, humble, deep-thinking, and all-around interesting, you’ll enjoy getting to know Joe. For this week's live show we talk with a group of impressive go-getters from the Front Range: We recorded LIVE with a nice crowd from the patio of Mountain Toad Brewing in Golden with four inspiring mountain adventurers who all share a love of suffering in nature. Joe Grant talks to us about his recent self-supported peak-bagging of all 57 14ers. He talks about his 100-mile "rest day" bike ride, his lowest point on the trails (on a paved road of all things) and how he keeps his motivation in some very difficult elements. Erik Sanders discusses his Labor Day weekend Nolan's 14 attempt and breaks some news regarding an exciting adventure race he's got coming up. Christopher Harrington talks about the group of trail-blazers he founded, FRXC - Front Range Cross Country, and lays out an ambitious plan that is now officially Joe Grant-approved. Our "every-woman" Ilene Bloom tells us how she got mixed into the crazy world of ultra-running and what she's got her eyes set on next.
