A couple of weeks ago a group of super talented printmakers got to together in Houston at the studio of the one and only Delita Martin. We talking Delita, Chloe Alexander, Anne Johnson, Rabea Ballin, Shanna Strauss, Jess Sabogal, Rashaun Rucker and Steve Prince who couldn't make it. Even your boy JBarber slid in there some how. The magic of the moment inspired us to create a new printmaking collective called the Legacy Print Council. Of course JBarber pulled out the mics to document such a momentous occasion. Today we got Delita Martin and Chloe Alexander talking about how this all came together and the value of sharing with your peers. Followed by Dr. Kheli Willetts who came by the studio to visit and ended up making a print herself. Kheli talks about being inspired to make a print, the time she spent with Elizabeth Catlett and her observation about the event. It's just a little taste of that good art talk from Legacy Weekend with the crew. Learn more about the Human Pilgrimage conference. Learn more about Steve Prince's work. Learn more about Jessica Hooten Wilson's work.A disgruntled white southern intellectual named Walter lives on his family's farm. They all think his fancy learning makes him good for nothing. On top of that, Walter thinks he's dying. Walter decides to pretend, through a penpal relationship with a social justice activist, that he is Black. A story unfolds from the deceit. This is a Flannery O'Connor story that you have probably never read, and we'll discuss it today on the podcast.Unlike Flannery's other works, a conversion and baptism come early in this story, and the rest of the book, which was never finished, was intended to ask, "What next?" Instead of the one fell swoop of the Holy Ghost readers are used to, what does the radical work of grace look like over time?Fragments of the unfinished novel have just been released, along with context-setting essays and commentary, by literary scholar and writer, Jessica Hooten Wilson. The book is called Why Do the Heathen Rage?, and it is further illuminated with powerful artwork by artist Steve Prince. The story fragments are fascinating, but the gloss Steve and Jessica provide help us unpack what's going on with Flannery. Sorry megafan, but she was not a saint. And in this broken text, we actually watch her come up against her limits as a white southerner of her times and as a writer. What was she doing? What, maybe, was God doing? And what can we learn from her today? We discuss O'Connor's work, intersections with Malcolm X and James Baldwin, what stories do to harm or heal, and what art and artistic collaborations make possible. Dr. Jessica Hooten Wilson is the Fletcher Jones Endowed Chair of Great Books at Pepperdine University. She is the author or editor of several books, including Flannery O'Connor's Why Do the Heathen Rage? A Behind-the-Scenes Look at a Work in Progress, Reading for the Love of God, and two award-winning books of literary scholarship: The Scandal of Holiness, and Giving the Devil His Due: Demonic Authority in the Fiction of Flannery O'Connor and Fyodor Dostoevsky.Steve A. Prince is a mixed media artist, master printmaker, lecturer, educator, and art evangelist with his MFA in Printmaking and Sculpture from Michigan State University. He is the Director of Engagement and Distinguished Artist in Residence at the Muscarelle Museum at William and Mary. A native of New Orleans, he currently resides in Williamsburg, Virginia. Now pour yourself a big ol' glass of sweet tea and hold on to your rocking chair. This exploration of Flannery O'Connor won't be what you're used to. We hope you enjoy the conversation.

As CNS gets underway this weekend in Florida, (August 29-31) featuring Willie Walsh, Director General of IATA, on his first public mission with gravitas after his appointment, I would gladly ask him questions regarding the IATA approach. Starting with Air Cargo, is One Record the totem for which IATA decided to ditch its IATA FIATA program? Was the entire IATA FIATA negotiation just a straddle strategy? Time to celebrate 30 years of the CNS Partnership recalling the people that made the "Partnership" go Meet Francesco Parisi Up Close & Personal When Parisi went into business in 1807 Napoleon was alive and signed a peace treaty with Russia; Ludwig von Beethoven debuted his Symphony Number 4 and Robert Fulton launched his first steamboat on the Hudson River in New York. Today in 2019, the quiet and unassuming Francesco Parisi (third generation) is a constant force for good as former President of FIATA and active builder of global transportation. Sad to report our colleague Steve Prince of Woodstock, Georgia died of Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis on Friday August 20, 2021. He was 72 years of age. Steve had served as publisher of Air Cargo World since 1991 and later he spent many years serving with the Board of TIACA promoting and bettering the cause of the air cargo industry. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/geoffrey-arend/support
Steve Prince knew he wanted to be an artist since he was five years old. Art can be a powerful way to worship, and being a maker of things allows us to reflect God the Creator. For Prince, being a Christian and an artist go hand and hand—he sees his artwork as a calling. In this episode, Dru Johnson talks to Steve about his life as a Christian artist, the influence of his Catholic upbringing in New Orleans, how he communicates through art, and how Scripture and art relate. Until a few weeks ago, one of the only places in downtown New Orleans acknowledging the city’s slave-trading past was a marker in Congo Square, erected in 1997. The New Orleans Committee to Erect Historic Markers on the Slave Trade has since put up two new markers, one on the transatlantic slave trade along the Moonwalk and another on the domestic slave trade at the intersection of Esplanade Avenue and Chartres Street. Author and historian Freddi Williams Evans and activist Luther Gray are the two original co-chairs of the committee. In this episode, Evans and Gray describe New Orleans’s past as the center of the overlapping international and domestic slave trades. They also discuss their conservation efforts at Congo Square, the logistics of erecting the markers with a sankofa bird instead of a pelican at the top, and the Maafa ceremony, which will host the unveiling of these markers later this year. This episode was recorded on May 10, 2018 in New Orleans. Committee members mentioned in this episode are Guy Hughes, Leon Waters, Ibrahima Seck, Erin Greenwald, Joshua Rothman, Joyce Miller, and Midlo Hall. Steve Prince designed the logo for the transatlantic marker. Museum Archipelago is a tiny show guiding you through the rocky landscape of museums. When I got an email from a high school friend, I was excited to reconnect. Little did I know that it would introduce me to a movie that I would really enjoy, connect with on multiple levels, laugh, cry, and want to share with all of you. Director Steven Prince and Traveling Picture Show Company have put together a film that will make us think, and re-evaluate how we hold or let go of our "religions." A cast with the likes of Billy Burke, Patrick Warburton, Sarah Shahi, Gary Cole, Joel David Moore, and film legend Adrienne Barbeau. Each actor does an excellent job portraying the story of a man who wrestles with his humanity as his life takes a new direction after his recent fame from dethroning a public access televangelist. I know you'll enjoy this movie as much as I do, click the links below to check it out and then LET'S TALK ABOUT IT! WATCH DIVINE ACCESS on Amazon Prime, YouTube, or on your local TV provider. Think I'll play old-timer for a while ... you know, just 'cause I'm in that mood. I get asked a lot about what happened to the local music scene, with clubs continuing to dwindle, attendance down, beer sales sinking. I've offered up a number of theories about how to get people coming back to the venues, but the fact is, it simply isn't what it used to be. It's not that the talent isn't as good, or the venues have become cheapskates (I heard the same gripes and complaints back then that I do now). The real difference is that everything else changed. I remember back in that magical time when I was in college. The Internet was only for nerds. On-line dating didn't exist. Cell phones were still a few years away. Playing your friend in a video game generally meant plopping a quarter into a machine at an arcade somewhere. Basically, if you wanted to find your friends or meet cute girls, you went to a club ... preferably one where there was a hot new band playing. (Also remember the only other way to hear music was to go to the store and buy a CD.) As such, there were tons of venues back then, and an equal number of good bands playing them. Seriously, this was just about all there was to do -- unless you were a big fan of Designing Women, or that stuipid sitcom with the people in the Dinosaur costumes. I only mention this now, because I know this week's guest, at least, is well aware of what I'm talking about. He was in one of those bands I used to go see a lot back then. These days, Jason Brown has broadened his horizons, strengthened his craft, and grown up a bit with his own music. His current EP, Songs Sung True, features some top players from the scene and contains six tracks that show his diversity and sophistication -- from the story-telling Icarus to the introspective Sanctuary to bluesy rockers with a touch of commentary like Loaded Gun and everywhere in between. With a new backing band in the works, and more songs in the vault, I'm really looking forward to see what Jason puts together for 2015.Links referenced in the show: Jason Brown can be found here: | | | Co-hosting tonights show are Leslie Fuller of the , of (briefly), and our very own mad ginger, .
